Slash Promises Guns N’ Roses, Velvet Revolver, Solo Songs On Tour

‘I’m really excited, because we’ve got a great backing band and a great frontman,’ Slash says of Myles Kennedy. By Kyle Anderson Slash Photo: MTV News Considering how long he has been around and the sort of people he has hung out with and places he has been, you would think there wouldn’t be a whole lot that would throw off Slash. But when it came time to plan a tour in support of his recently released self-titled solo album, he was a little perplexed. After all, he couldn’t recruit all of the top-shelf talent who provided vocals on Slash (including Kid Rock, Ozzy Osbourne, Fergie, Chris Cornell, Adam Levine and Dave Grohl). Luckily, he took a chance that paid off. “I auditioned a lot of singers for Velvet Revolver and a lot for this new tour,” Slash told MTV News of the jaunt, which kicks off Friday night (May 21) in Walker, Minnesota. “I had one song left on the album and didn’t have a singer for it, so I called Myles Kennedy out of the blue. He sent back this amazing vocal for a song called ‘Starlight.’ ” Kennedy, who was previously the singer for the Creed fallout band Alter Bridge, immediately clicked with the veteran guitarist. Naturally, that led to the birth of their touring together. “I don’t know if I coerced him into doing the tour or if he really wanted to do it, but he was onboard,” Slash joked. “I’m really excited, because we’ve got a great backing band and a great frontman.” Though he stuck mostly to a bellowing baritone with Alter Bridge, Kennedy’s singing with Slash is “much bluesier,” according to the guitarist. That’s good, because he’ll have to tackle a wide variety of styles. “It’s a pretty killer set list,” said Slash, who has done time in a number of different bands, all of which will be represented on the tour. “We do five to six songs off the new record. And we do a handful of Guns N’ Roses songs, a lot of which I haven’t played since ’93. And we do a few Velvet Revolver songs and a couple of Snakepit songs. It’s a really energetic and vibrant set.” Will you check out Slash’s new tour? Let us know in the comments!

Drake Calls Thank Me Later Release A ‘Crucial Moment’

‘It actually feels like my last album, not my first,’ he tells Billboard. By Jayson Rodriguez Drake on the June cover of Billboard magazine Photo: Billboard The pressure is on for Drake to deliver on his highly anticipated debut album, Thank Me Later. And the Toronto MC is well aware of the expectations. In the May 29 issue of Billboard, Drake said it feels like he’s working on his final album, rather than dipping his toe into the pool for the first time. “I know I have a lot of growing up to do, but I guess, unfortunately, people won’t judge me as if this is my first album or my first year in the game,” Drake said of the album, due June 15. “This is a crucial moment for me. It actually feels like my last album, not my first. I’ll be working hard to make sure you remember it. I’ll be in your city, performing all the songs, and hopefully looking at you in your eyes and let you know it’s real out here, man. I’m ready.” Recently, Drake announced he is extending his Away From Home Tour , which will feature an international leg in July with stops in Norway and the U.K. Earlier this week, the Thank Me Later track list was revealed; T.I. and Young Jeezy will join Jay-Z, Lil Wayne and The-Dream on the collection. Drake has long insisted that, despite the buzz surrounding his rising star, he wants his first album to be “relatable,” much in the same manner that made his breakout mixtape, So Far Gone, a fan favorite. “At the end of the day, one of the biggest things I’ve been toying with on Thank Me Later is that it’s kind of hard for me to come out and be like, ‘I’m still the underdog,’ ” Drake told MTV News last year. “I can’t rap about the same things [as I did] on So Far Gone, so it’s just really trying to tell the greatest story that’s never been told, which is the story of a rapper’s come-up, and tell it without being corny or over-bragging or sounding like, ‘Feel sorry for me.’ It’s going to be a very interesting record, because I’m really going to have to dig deep and tell stories that people can relate to. But it’s kind of hard, because my life is at a very different place now.” Are you going to get Drake’s Thank Me Later when it comes out? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Drake

Drake Brings Out Special Guests At Dallas Away From Home Tour Stop

Baby and Lil Twist join their Young Money/ Cash Money comrade; Drizzy drops a Dallas freestyle. By Sarah Bryant Drake performs in Dallas on Wednesday Photo: Sarah Bryant DALLAS — Drake ‘s Away From Home Tour landed at the Palladium on Wednesday night, and the Young Money MC sounded just like the records you bang in your car — no Auto-Tune necessary. The Toronto native kicked off the show with songs from his breakout mixtape, So Far Gone, and then gave fans a taste of what’s to come on his June 15 debut, Thank Me Later, with “Fireworks,” which will feature Alicia Keys on the album. Drake temporarily diverted the love and attention from himself to his big brother, Lil Wayne. “It’s Young Money all day. Free Weezy,” Drake said between songs. “When I say Young Money, you say Free Weezy.” Birdman then made a special appearance during “4 My Town (Play Ball),” and the crowd got even crazier when the DJ dropped the beat for “Money to Blow.” “We certified getting it CM, YM, Cash Money business,” Baby rapped. Lil Twist also joined Drake onstage during “Bedrock.” The biggest spectacle was made by a fan, not a guest MC. Christina McAlister from Fort Worth, Texas, was picked from the audience to participate in the show. She landed not just a dance with Drake, but a kiss on the lips. The ladies “ooohed” with excitement as Christina tried to keep her cool. Shortly after, Drake pulled out his mic stand covered with bras, and his collection began to rack up, as women threw their bras to the stage. “I’ll make sure to add these to my treasure chest,” he chuckled. Though his newest single, “Find Your Love,” was conspicuously absent, he had to perform his breakthrough track, “Best I Ever Had.” Drake’s fans knew this show couldn’t be missed, because getting tickets wasn’t easy. In Dallas, tickets sold out within the first 24 hours. Devin Smith, a 23-year old senior from the University of North Texas, had to wait until tickets were re-released in mid-April to score his. “Just seeing Drake was on a different level!” Smith exclaimed. He and his friend arrived at the Palladium at 11:30 a.m. for the 8 p.m. performance so they could get the best seats in the house. They camped out in front, studied for summer classes and chatted with their newfound, like-minded friends. “It was worth the wait sitting there. … He put on a great concert,” Smith said. “He had great energy, and it was everything I thought it would be. It sounds cheesy, but it’s true.” Drake must have really loved his time in the D. On Thursday morning (May 20), he released “9 AM in Dallas Freestyle.” “Weezy, I’m just out here reppin’ us,” he raps. “Till I get to shake the hand of the man that’s blessing us/ I know these n—as miss the mean lyrics/ Kush got the room smelling like Teen Spirit/ … Money gets all of my love and affection/ Cars all black like the cover of Essence / I’m allergic to coming in second/ But I never sneeze/ YMO-ney, n—a.” Have you checked out Drake’s Away From Home Tour? Lying children will grow up to be successful citizens

Researchers have found that the ability to tell fibs at the age of two is a sign of a fast developing brain and means they are more likely to have successful lives. They found that the more plausible the lie, the more quick witted they will be in later years and the better their abiliy to think on their feet. It also means that they have developed “executive function” – the ability to invent a convincing lie by keeping the truth at the back of their mind. “Parents should not be alarmed if their child tells a fib,” said Dr Kang Lee, director of the Institute of Child Study at Toronto Universit who carried out the research. “Almost all children lie. Those who have better cognitive development lie better because they can cover up their tracks. They may make bankers in later life.” Lying involves multiple brain processes, such as integrating sources of information and manipulating the data to their advantage. It is linked to the development of brain regions that allow “executive functioning” and use higher order thinking and reasoning. Dr Lee and his team tested 1,200 children aged two to 16 years old. A majority of the volunteers told lies but it is the children with better cognitive abilities who can tell the best lies. At the age of two, 20 per cent of children will lie. This rises to 50 per cent by three and almost 90 per cent at four. The most deceitful age, they discovered, was 12, when almost every child tells lies. The tendency starts to fall away by the age of 16, when it is 70 per cent. As adulthood approaches, young people learn instead to use the less harmful “white lies” that everyone tells to avoid hurting people’s feelings. Researchers say there is no link between telling fibs in childhood and any tendency to cheat in exams or to become a fraudster later in life. Nor does strict parenting or a religious upbringing have any impact. Dr Lee said that catching your children lying was not a bad hing but should be exploited as a ” “teachable moment”. “You shouldn’t smack or scream at your child but you should talk about the importance of honesty and the negativity of lying,” he told the Sunday Times. “After the age of eight the opportunities are going to be very rare.” The research team invited younger children — one at a time — to sit in a room with hidden cameras. A soft toy was placed behind them. When the researcher briefly left the room, the children were told not to look. In nine out of 10 cases cameras caught them peeking. But when asked if they had looked, they almost always said no. They tripped themselves up when asked what they thought the toy might be. One little girl asked to place her hand underneath a blanket that was over the toy before she answered the question. After feeling the toy but not seeing it, she said: “It feels purple so it must be Barney.” Dr Lee, who caught his son Nathan, three, looking at the toy, said: “We even had cameras trained on their knees because we thought their legs would fidget if they were telling a lie, but it isn’t true.” Older children were set a test paper but were told they must not look at the answers printed on the back. Some of the questions were easy, such as who lives in the White House. But the children who looked at the back gave the printed answer “Presidius Akeman” to the bogus question “Who discovered Tunisia?” When asked how they knew this, some said they learnt it in a history class. added by: cclark_productions

Drake Reveals Alicia Keys Collaboration On Thank Me Later

‘Fireworks’ will be album’s opening track. By Jayson Rodriguez Drake Photo: Cash Money Records Drake confirmed Alicia Keys will appear as a guest on his forthcoming debut album during the Los Angeles stop of his Away From Home tour on Thursday night. The Toronto MC broke the news to the crowd as the opening notes of “Fireworks,” slated to be Thank Me Later’s opening track, began to boom from the speakers. “This right here is the first song that you will here when you put that disk in,” Drake said of Thank Me Later, due June 15. “It’s a song with myself and Miss Alicia Keys, it’s called “Fireworks.” “Money just changed everything, I wonder how life without it would go,” he rapped. “From the concrete, who knew that a flower would grow/ Looking down from the top and it’s crowded below/ My 15 minutes started an hour ago.” Drake premiered the track during the first stop of his tour and has been revealing more of the number with subsequent performances. In Rolling Stone magazine’s Spring Music Preview, the So Far Gone superstar revealed the track would address his relationships with Lil Wayne, his own family, and a rumored romance with Rihanna. Last month, Drake told MTV News the song represents what his life is like at the moment . “The song itself is the first song on the album; I think it’s the biggest indicator of what the album is gonna be like,” he said. “That’s why I picked that song to go first, and that’s why I wrote the first verse like that. It’s really where I am in my life right now. I know they’re looking forward to the album, so I want them to get a feel of how the story starts off.” Are you excited to hear Alicia Keys collaborating with Drake? Let us know in the comments! Asher Roth Talks Working With ‘Genius’ Pharrell On Next Album

Plus: Game asks for DJ Skee’s assitance on The Red Room, in Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Matt Elias Asher Roth Photo: SRC/Universal Celebrity Favorites There’s a method to Asher Roth’s madness. He rapped over beats from the likes of the RZA, Q-Tip and J. Dilla on his mixtape Seared Foie Gras With Quince and Cranberry because you might hear him flow over original tracks by those super producers on his next album. One dude who is definitely working on Roth’s upcoming LP is Pharrell Williams — and Skateboard P might even serve as executive producer on the project. “We linked up in Miami,” Roth said of the Williams sessions. “Very good chemistry as far as creating music. We was down there while it was all snowy in New York. We had a blast. I think we have some really beautiful music for warm weather. “He really is a genius,” Roth gushed. “Working with him, it’s really fast. We wound up doing 12 records in 12 days, which is really good numbers. It’s quick. He gets an idea and he harnesses that idea really quick. It’s cool when someone like me gets to step into the studio with him. I feel it’s probably different vibes. … I feel like it’s different vibes. Even though he works with everyone from Britney to the Clipse, he can do that because he stays in his lane. He stays true to himself. He’s got a very real sound he’s harnessed with the Neptunes stuff; he’s got a real sound he’s harnessed with N.E.R.D. We wrote 12 different records. We didn’t try to write one record 12 times — we have stuff all over the map, from live drums that are going to incorporate itself well into a live show … I’m excited for you guys to hear that stuff.” The Streets Is Talking: News and Notes From the Underground Game’s new mixtape The Red Room is set to drop very soon, but there has been a slight change in the lineup — instead of making the mixtape a Gangsta Grillz and putting it out with DJ Drama, Game said he secured the services of DJ Skee. “I immediately called Skee, but he was in Toronto,” Game said about reaching out to Skee once he and Drama amicably agreed to part ways on the project. “He got back, came in and then the tape took a turn left, man. But it’s all good, man, ’cause me and Skee got history. Skee’s at home right now just going in working on it to get it out to the people ASAP. So there ain’t no love lost to Drama, I talk to him. He asked me if there wasn’t gonna be anymore G-Unit disses on the tape and I was like, ‘Not really,’ but I reserve the right to do whatever I want. So it’s probably best that I use Skee.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines .

Drake’s Music ‘Doesn’t Really Call For’ Lil Wayne-Type Energy

‘It’s more about me connecting with the audience,’ MC says about being more laid-back onstage. By Shaheem Reid Drake Photo: Sam Hendrick/ MTV News Drake has thankfully recovered from last year’s knee injury — the 23-year-old Toronto native has been onstage all this week performing as part of his Away From Home Tour . “I had an assessment a week ago,” Drake told MTV News last week. “They told me that I’m definitely able to get out there and perform to the fullest. I’m still not going to be able to play basketball. I’m gonna stay far away from that, actually. But I’m ready to come back. I think I’m coming back with more maturity as far as connecting with the audience and less about running around. A lot of my performance energy before came from watching Lil Wayne. I always felt I needed to be just as energetic, running back and forth on the stage. In preparing for this tour, I realized my brand of music doesn’t really call for that. It’s more about me connecting with the audience and them enjoying the way we flip these songs around. I want them to walk away and be like, ‘That was a great night.’ ” Drizzy has openers Francis and the Lights and K-OS on the road with him. “I chose these acts with Oliver who works with me,” he explained. “They’re on the tour because they’re who I’m a fan of. I know I could have brought out other younger artists or rappers, but I want this to be an experience. I want them to be refreshed about music. Not like, ‘Oh, I went to another rap show.’ ” What do you think of Drake’s live show? Let us know in the comments below!
