New Kids On The Block, Backstreet Boys Talk Upcoming Tour At AMAs

NKOTB’s Jordan Knight tells MTV News that their American Music Awards By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Tim Kash Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage Superstar boy bands New Kids on the Block and the Backstreet Boys , who each spent a segment of the ’90s causing teen-girl hysteria with their squeaky-clean party jams and baby-faced good looks, are now joining forces for a U.S. tour in June. On Sunday night (November 21), the country got a taste of what an NKOTBSB show will look like when the nine-member collective closed the 2010 American Music Awards . Before hitting the AMA stage, the fellas told MTV News that the collaborative awards-show production mirrors the staging of their upcoming trek. “It’s gonna be exactly what they see on the tour,” NKOTB’s Jordan Knight said of the show, in which the guys took turns belting pop smashes by both groups. “I think a lot of people, when they hear New Kids are going on tour with the Backstreet Boys, they think we’re gonna, like, [face] off; we’re gonna be some kind of rivalry. But that’s not the case. They’re gonna see tonight onstage that it’s a collaboration, that we get along … and you’ll see it on our performance.” The amiable rapport among the crew is definitely evident when the guys talk about each band’s contribution to pop music. Members of NKOTB and BSB maintain that the groups have a symbiotic relationship: The New Kids paved the way, and the Boys kept the boy-band phenomenon alive. “In many ways, they contemporize us. They brought us to the forefront,” NKOTB’s Joey McIntyre explained. “When the Backstreet Boys came out, at first you’re like, ‘OK, these guys are kinda doing their thing.’ To get the credit that somehow we started [the boy-band trend] – which we didn’t, ’cause there’s New Edition and the Jackson 5 and this tradition’s being going on forever – they kinda shed a light on what we did too, and that’s nice.” Nick Carter added that the “Larger Than Life” crooners were amped to hit the road with their ’90s teen-idol forefathers. “We appreciate and respect everything that these guys have done for the music industry, and now it’s just great to be together,” he said. “I think that’s what’s awesome.” NKOTB’s resident bad boy Danny Wahlberg compared the team-up to a successful partnership straight out of Hollywood. “It’s Rocky and Apollo taking out Mr. T,” he quipped, as the fellas laughed. Heartbreaking: Afghanistan War Hero Dog Accidentally Euthanized in Arizona Today | Her Puppies Are Safe (?) in the U.S.

November 15th, 2010 06:44 PM ET Afghanistan dog hero accidentally euthanized A dog rescued from Afghanistan after she alerted soldiers to a suicide bomber was accidentally euthanized at an Arizona shelter on Monday. A Pinal County Animal Care and Control employee has been placed on administrative leave for failing to follow procedures and euthanizing the wrong dog. The dog, Target, was recently brought over from Afghanistan by a soldier who had returned from his tour of duty. Target was featured by CNN for heroism after saving dozens of soldiers from a suicide bomber on February 11. “She got her name because the Afghans we lived with were constantly trying to off her. She's been shot in the leg. … The Afghans actually ran over her,” Sgt. Christopher Duke said, who helped care for Target in Afghanistan and has adopted her packmate Rufus. “There's no killing this dog for sure. She's pretty much been through it all, ” he said upon their reunion in July in Georgia. Target's new owner, Army Sgt. Terry Young whose life was saved by the stray, helped bring the 2-ish-year-old from Afghanistan to her new home in Arizona. She disappeared from Young's home on Friday. Facebook postings requested help in finding her. Target saved U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan Animal Care and Control received a call about a stray female shepherd-mix dog in the San Tan Valley area on Friday. An animal control officer picked up the dog and brought her to the shelter where the dog stayed over the weekend. The dog was not microchipped or licensed with the county, shelter officials said. On Monday morning, the employee mistakenly took the dog out of its pen and euthanized it. The dog was not scheduled for euthanasia. “I am heartsick over this. I had to personally deliver the news to the dog’s owner, and he and his family are understandably distraught,” said Animal Care and Control Director Ruth Stalter. “We work hard get to strays reunited with their owners. When it comes to euthanizing an animal, there are some clear-cut procedures to follow. Based on my preliminary investigation, our employee did not follow those procedures.” In an e-mail, Young told CNN affiliate KPHO, “I'm an absolute wreck today, and it's everything in my power to hold it together for me and my family. My 4-year-old son just can't understand what is going on with Target and keeps asking me to get the poison out of her and bring her home. They don't want her to go be with God yet.” “An investigation is under way, and we will cooperate fully. We will also thoroughly review procedures to ensure that something like this does not happen again,” Stalter said. “This is unacceptable, and no family should be deprived of their companion because procedures were not followed.” Target was pregnant when she helped thwart the suicide bomber by attacking him. She had her litter of puppies in Afghanistan. Target's puppies have since been brought to the United States. added by: EthicalVegan

Eminem’s ‘Not Afraid’ Takes Best Hip Hop Video

After performing, Slim Shady jetted to New York to continue tour. By Rochell D. Thomas Eminem performs during the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Kevin Mazur/EM/WireImage When MTV’s 2010 Video Music Award nominations were announced last month and Eminem earned eight , he was not pleased, complaining that the September 12 scheduling of the awards ceremony scratched the quickly spinning record that is his tour schedule. “Apparently, MTV doesn’t care that I have two massive stadium shows on the other side of the country the day after the VMAs,” he said. “F me, right?” Well, we wouldn’t exactly say that. Not that it matters. Apparently, Slim Shady could only spare enough time to open the VMAs. After his medley performance of “Not Afraid” and “Love the Way You Lie” (for which Rihanna joined him onstage), he jetted, literally — leaving the Nokia Theater to catch a red-eye flight back to New York for his Monday-night gigs. Guess he didn’t think he’d win. Which he did. Marshall Mathers’ clip for “Not Afraid” beat both rap royalty and newcomers to take the Best Hip Hop Video award. His competition: “Airplanes” by B.o.B (featuring Hayley Williams), Jay-Z and Swizz Beatz’ “On to the Next One,” Kid Cudi’s “Pursuit of Happiness” and the mega video that was expected to take this category’s cake — the Hype Williams-directed “Forever,” featuring Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Eminem, himself. Since Em had left the building, Modern Family star Sofia Vergara, who presented the award, accepted on his behalf. “I’m going to take it to Columbia,” she joked. J. Cole To Open Eminem/Jay-Z New York Concerts

Roc Nation MC will warm up Home and Home Tour crowds. By Mawuse Ziegbe J. Cole Photo: C. Flanigan/FilmMagic One of Jay-Z’s promising Roc Nation signees will warm up the crowd when Hov and Eminem’s Home and Home Tour hits NYC. Fayetteville, North Carolina, MC J. Cole will open for the hip-hop gods when their joint show heads to Yankee Stadium next week, according to RapRadar.com . The Warm Up mixtape rapper will open the show along with VMA nominee B.o.B, who worked his magic at the tour’s Detroit outings. Upstart MC J. Cole is the latest addition to a tour lineup that has been heavy on historic appearances from rap greats. Inimitable beatmaster and hip-hop pioneer Dr. Dre, G-Unit boss 50 Cent and Toronto star Drake all surprised thousands of fans at Jigga and Shady’s Comerica Park shows last week. The opening slot is another milestone in what has shaped up to be a major year for Cole. After becoming the first artist to ink a deal with Jay’s Roc Nation imprint and stepping out on tour with the rock-star MC last year , Cole was dubbed a Freshman ’10 rapper by XXL magazine in March . The same month, the MC headlined his first NYC show, ably satisfying the city’s finicky music fans. In July, he was a top-five finalist for MTV News’ “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010” and can be heard on the smoky hit R&B single “All I Want Is You” from fellow newcomer Miguel. Cole’s single “Who Dat” has hit the airwaves, and the rising lyricist told MTV News earlier this year that he’s checking out the successful blueprint his mentor Jay established when it comes to rolling out his debut LP. “You might have an incredible single or an incredible song, and if you just set it up the wrong way, it won’t go as far as it could’ve went,” he said. “I feel like Jay’s last album had the perfect setup, single-wise. So it’s really about finding the right setup, and then from there, it’s up to the people to decide.” Before Eminem heads to New York, he’ll be opening the 2010 VMAs on Sunday night in Los Angeles. Are you going to the Home and Home shows in NYC? What are you expecting from the concerts? Let us know in the comments below! The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday. Rich Cronin’s Former LFO Bandmates Continue Their Music Careers

Brad Fischetti and Devin Lima have both stayed in the business since band split up in 2002. By Gil Kaufman LFO Photo: Arista After his band’s spotlight faded, LFO singer Rich Cronin, who passed away Wednesday , spent his time writing songs for other singers and appearing on VH1’s 2007 reality show “Mission: Man Band,” in which he tried to revive his career alongside some other boy band veterans. But what became of Cronin’s fellow Lyte Funky Ones? A day after Cronin died at the age of 35, former LFO member Brad Fischetti spoke to spoke to Entertainment Weekly . “He was one of the funniest people on the planet,” said Fischetti, who was hoping to mount a tour with Cronin and third member Devin Lima later this year as a follow-up to a successful set of reunion shows in 2009. “Nobody could tell a story like Rich. He used to say, ‘Never let a few facts get in the way of a good story.’ ” Fischetti recalled the day in 2005 when he found out Cronin had leukemia, and how the “Summer Girls” singer/songwriter thought he’d never be able to perform again. “None of us thought we’d ever be on the stage again as LFO,” said Fischetti. “He fought hard, man. He beat leukemia twice. And beat a stroke. He was a fighter.” Fischetti has kept a low profile since LFO split up in 2002, preferring to remain behind the scenes and nurture new talent through his label 111 Records . He did record a solo album, Sari , in 2007; at the time he described its sound as a mix of Coldplay, David Bowie, Pink Floyd and Radiohead. 111 has released albums by former LFO bassist Dan Walters, Kiernan McMullan, the Spill Canvas, Canon, Inkwell, the Windupdeads and Rookie of the Year. Fischetti said the reunion tour last summer reminded him of the special bond the trio had during their late-’90s peak. Cronin was weakened by chemotherapy, a stem-cell transplant and a stroke that left him with such severe leg pain that Fischetti and Lima had to help the singer get dressed before shows and carry him on stage. But the tour was still a highlight. “He was so happy,” Fischetti said. “We really became soul mates. Devin and I both realized how much we loved him, despite the differences we had in the past. In New York City at the Highline Ballroom, he thanked the crowd at the end of the show. I’ll always have that voice in my mind, because it was such a sincere thank you. Really, that’s the memory that’s sticking out in my brain.” Lima released his first solo track in 2006, a cover of the Sly & the Family Stone song “If You Want Me To Stay” for the tribute album Different Strokes by Different Folks . Though it caused some head-scratching at the time, it led to him performing in a tribute to Stone on the 2006 Grammy Awards alongside Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Maroon 5, Joss Stone, John Legend and will.i.am. Lima released Mozart Popart , his first album with his band Cadbury Diesel, in 2008. The disc helped push Lima past the bubblegum tunes of his past, thanks to the rock and roll feel of songs like “Hangin’ With You” and the soulful R&B tune “Me Veda.” Fischetti and Lima are currently collaborating on a new hip-hop project called The Xiles . They released a Christmas EP last year and revealed in December that they’d already begun recording their debut album, American Genie: Volume 1 . Related Artists LFO (Lyte Funky Ones)

This time last year, the VMA-nominated Canadian juggernaut known as Drizzy was topping the charts and basking in the glow generated by a string of highly touted guest appearances and his certified-instant-classic mixtape So Far Gone. As ’09 drew to a close, love for Drake from fans only intensified. The 23-year-old repped for his family on the We Are Young Money album, while verses on Timbaland’s “Say Something,” and his own “Forever” — let’s not even get started again about the power-packed lineup on that record
