Ryan Ross Says It’s ‘Us Versus The World’ With The Young Veins

‘If you like it, then you do,’ he says of new group’s debut album. By James Montgomery The Young Veins’ Jon Walker and Ryan Ross Photo: MTV News When MTV News last spoke to Ryan Ross , he was in the process of finding a label to release Take a Vacation, the debut disc from his new band the Young Veins. He was confident that the hunt for a label would be resolved in a matter of weeks and that, finally, the Veins would have something (a single, a video, a tour) to show for all their hard work. Unfortunately, things didn’t quite work out that way. When MTV News spoke to Ross and the Veins at South By Southwest, Vacation still hadn’t been released, and their tour was only a few dates old. Yet, to a man — and there are five of them in the band these days — their confidence hadn’t waned, and with good reason: After months of searching, they’d finally found a suitable home for their album, which will hit stores on June 8. “It’s coming out on a label called One Haven — it’s pretty new. There’s only, like, four artists on it now and Butch Walker is one of them,” Ross told MTV News. “To be honest, the search for a label was really weird, because some of the labels that you wouldn’t expect to care about stuff like radio formats were the ones that did care. They were like, ‘Yeah, we love this record, but what are we going to play on the radio?’ And I was like, ‘You don’t have bands on the radio.’ ” And the question of format — just where does the Young Veins’ crackling, retro-leaning rock fit in the context of today’s exceedingly grim radio landscape? — is perhaps the most daunting challenge they face on their road to success. As Ross himself puts it, “I don’t know if we fit in at all, actually. “I don’t think there are a lot of bands that sound the way we do, who play the same kind of rock we do,” he smiled. “But I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that at all.” And in statements like that you catch a glimpse of Ross’ swagger, the thing that polarizes most fans of his former band, Panic! at the Disco, and has earned him a certain, uh, reputation amongst those in the industry . It’s very much alive in the Young Veins’ music too. After all, Vacation gleefully — and some might say, stubbornly — flies in the face of most modern rock axioms. It clocks in at just a hair under 30 minutes. The songs pop and hiss and are totally free of today’s studio sheen. It was made on the fly, on the cheap and practically on the lam. It is very much a labor of love, made for (and by) a very select group of retro-rock fanatics. Ross said that was the most important aspect — he wanted to get his friends together in a house and just make a record they’d all love. He’s not worried what Panic! fans — or the record-buying public, for that matter — will think of the tunes. All of that will take care of itself. “The record’s out in early June, and after that, who knows? Some of the kids don’t seem to like it, and they don’t get it, and that’s fine, I understand,” he said. “There’s definitely a sense of ‘us versus the world’ with this band. We all sort of see it as we’re all in this together. And we’re all really happy about the music we’re doing, so it’s kind of worth it. I don’t like to say, ‘Hey, we’re really good. Check this out.’ If you like it, then you do. We’re definitely working way harder than we ever have.”

Rihanna Takes Drum Lessons From Travis Barker Before Tour

‘She jams! Watch out for her,’ Barker tweets. By James Montgomery Rihanna and Travis Barker Photo: Travis Barker Rihanna ‘s European tour doesn’t kick off until next month (with a full U.S. jaunt scheduled for the summer), but from the looks of things it’s already shaping up to be a can’t-miss show. That’s because, in addition to the usual ephemera — Lights! Props! Costumes! — Rih Rih is also expanding her repertoire for the tour by learning how to play the drums. And she’s taking lessons from one of the best in the business: noted metronome/masher Travis Barker . Late Tuesday (March 23), Barker’s reps sent MTV News a photo of the dynamic duo after a recent practice at the Hollywood Center Studios and the Blink-182 smasher included a note that promised that not only will Rihanna be playing live onstage (no click track here), but that “she’s really good.” He later posted even more about the rehearsals on his Twitter account , writing, “She Jams! Watch out for her!” We’re inclined to believe him because at this point, Barker has collaborated with practically everyone under the sun, including his current gig with DJ A-Trak , which he unveiled earlier this month with a string of shows at the Roxy Theatre in Hollywood. Rihanna’s European tour gets underway April 16 in Antwerp, Belgium, and runs until early June. She’s also set to perform at the upcoming Kids’ Choice Awards, along with the likes of Justin Bieber. There are no firm dates for her U.S. tour, but it is reportedly set to kick off this summer. Justin Bieber Talks Girls, Family, Fame On ‘The View’

‘I just try and take one day at a time,’ he says of his meteoric rise to fame. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber performs on “The View” Monday Photo: ABC NEW YORK — Justin Bieber made history on “The View” as the first guest to make two appearances on the show in the same week. On Monday (March 22), not only did he perform a new track from his new album, My World 2.0 , which comes out tomorrow, he also sat down with the ladies to talk about his meteoric rise to fame and how he takes his family on the road with him. “I just try and take one day at a time. It’s been an amazing roller-coaster ride. My mom usually travels on the road. My grandma’s with me today,” he explained. “Usually I have a tutor, but this is release week so everything is crazy. I miss being able to go and hang out with my friends, but this is an amazing experience.” While Bieber fans lined up outside the studio to try and catch a glimpse of the pop star, inside the audience was full of older women who traveled across the country probably more to catch a glimpse of the show’s hosts than Bieber himself. Yet they kept their energy high for the teen phenom. This summer he’ll be hitting the road for his tour and admitted that having his mom by his side at all times isn’t always that easy. “You know, not a lot of 16-year-old boys are with their mom, so we bump heads sometimes. but we have the best relationship,” he said, adding that it’s easy for him to avoid temptations. “I have the greatest team with me and my mom’s on the road — I don’t want to let her down.” And when he wasn’t dishing to the ladies about his career, he was laughing at a YouTube video of him when he was 12 singing Aretha Franklin’s “Respect.” In a shot of him not shown on the show, he laughed at the footage and whispered to himself, “Oh my!” Citing girls as the inspiration for his new album, he even revealed his celebrity crush, other than Beyonc

Major Lazer Launch U.S. Tour At Winter Music Conference

‘We have these gigantic lasers,’ Diplo says of the duo’s live show. By Akshay Bhansali Major Lazer Photo: Rob Loud/ Getty Images Reggae. Dubstep. Hip-hop. However you try to describe the music of Major Lazer producers Diplo and Switch, one thing is certain: It is dance music. And if their songs like “Pon the Floor,” “Hold the Line” (featuring Mr. Lex and Santigold) and “Keep It Goin’ Louder” (featuring Nina Sky and Brooklyn, NY vocalist Rick Blaze) already make you get down, on tour the party is going to get a whole lot brighter. “A Major Lazer show is pretty sick,” Diplo said when we caught up with him Thursday (March 18). “We are doing a whole U.S. tour, so we have these gigantic lasers — these super-duper f—ing lasers!” And with Diplo being from the Orlando, Florida, area, it makes sense that the tour is set to kick-off at Miami’s Winter Music Conference . In fact, for the former Hollertronix DJ/Producer who frequently produces songs with M.I.A., WMC is a place of nostalgia. “I’ve been going down there since I was a kid,” he said. “I would go down to see Portishead or Chemical Brothers when I was 15. Seeing Portishead when I was really young there was really dope. I was really into their record at the time.” This year Major Lazer is set to share the Ultra Music Festival stage with one of the more diverse electronic bills to date: David Guetta, A-Trak, Deadmau5, Will.I.Am, LMFAO, Swedish House Mafia, Calvin Harris, DJ Tiesto and many more are all set to perform at UMF. “There used to be different divisions between underground music and commercial house and experimental stuff and avant garde,” Diplo explained. “To be honest, those lines are now blended, you know. I’ve done a record with Tiesto and he’s a f—ing cool guy. Everybody is taking influences … all of us are just making club music, and we try to outdo each other with how we can make people go crazier. It’s a very competitive spirit down there.” Major Lazer’s U.S. tour begins Saturday March 27 at the Ultra Music Festival in Miami and will carry through 17 more cities, wrapping at Coachella in Indio, California, before moving on to Canada and Europe. Jessica Simpson On Working With ‘Dear Friend’ Billy Corgan

‘It was great to be able to collaborate with him,’ she says of Smashing Pumpkins frontman. By Jocelyn Vena Jessica Simpson Photo: MTV News Jessica Simpson worked with a seemingly unlikely collaborator on her new track “Who We Are,” the theme to her new docu-series, “The Price of Beauty” : Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan . “Billy is a dear friend of mine and I asked him to help out with arranging the song,” she told MTV News. “And he had some ideas to change it up a bit musically and some really cool arrangements and some great guitar things.” Simpson explained that working with Corgan, who came to the singer’s defense after John Mayer made explicit comments about her in a recent Playboy interview, really taught her a lot. “To be able to sit with Billy [is a learning experience], and I always feel comfortable with him ’cause he is a close friend of mine,” she said. “And I know he had my best interest at heart and it was great to be able to collaborate with him and to have him there in the studio.” The song embraces the show’s theme about loving the person you are . “I ended up writing the song with some friends and it was about all these places that I’d gone to and the experience that I had,” she said. “It’s about the beauty of who we are and embracing that and knowing that we are all authentic — that every single person is different,” she added. “But they all have something different about themselves that they need to discover.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Jessica Simpson Related Photos The Evolution Of: Jessica Simpson Related Artists Jessica Simpson Billy Corgan The Smashing Pumpkins

‘American Idol’ Judge Kara DioGuardi Says Her First Season ‘Sucked’

‘It was freshman year. … I’d never been on television,’ DioGuardi told Jay Leno on ‘The Tonight Show.’ By Eric Ditzian Kara DioGuardi Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/ Getty Images On Monday night, the night before “American Idol” debuts its top 12 contestants , Kara DioGuardi stopped by Jay Leno’s “Tonight Show” couch to talk all things season nine. The “Idol” judge dished on her tableside flirtation with Simon Cowell, defended the performance of Ellen DeGeneres and admitted that her nerves got in the way of her commentary last season. ‘American Idol’ Season 8 Memorable Moments “It was freshman year,” DioGuardi explained about her first year behind the judges’ table. “It sucked. I’d never been on television. The 30-second sound bite — I’m Italian, that’s impossible! To shut up is difficult!” This year, she’s finally started to have fun on “Idol.” From a viewer’s perspective, there’s no doubting DioGuardi has become more comfortable on camera and has been able to deliver more insightful criticism . “I think this year, it’s more about the contestants because I’m not feeling as nervous, so I can zero in on them and what they’re feeling and what they’re going through,” she said. “It’s just a different experience and it feels way better.” Leno also made a point of questioning the ongoing coziness between Kara and Simon. The two judges seemed to be snuggling up to each other over the last few weeks — something that even Ryan Seacrest addressed at one point. DioGuardi is a newlywed, while Cowell recently got engaged . So what’s going on between the duo? “I’m trying to figure it out,” DioGuardi said with a laugh. “I don’t know if it’s because he’s got a girlfriend and he’s got separation anxiety and he needs to lean into me.” Before the segment wrapped up, DioGuardi came to the defense of DeGeneres, who has come under criticism for delivering kind words rather than accurate, constructive critiques from behind the judges’ table. Kara maintained that Ellen is “doing a great job.” “It’s scary,” she added. “She’s getting used to that. Sometimes it’s bad news and it ain’t fun to deliver.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.
