Mother of 9/11 Hero Addresses Carson Daly, Defends "Strong, Heroic Gay Men"

Carson Daly is still feeling the heat for comments he made yesterday morning on his radio show, and this time the source is the mother of a 9/11 hero. Following Daly’s on-air joke that implied gay people were too weak to subdue an airline pilot – in this case, the JetBlue captain, Clayton Osbon , who simply lost control of his senses aboard a flight earlier in the week – Alice Hoagland has penned a letter to the host of The Voice . Hoagland is the parent of Mark Bingham, one of the passengers on 9/11’s United Airlines Flight 93, who helped wrestle control from terrorists and crashed the plane in a Shanksville, Pennsylvania field, saving countless lives in the process. “Yes, my gay son was known in our family for bringing me flowers on my birthday and Mother’s Day,” Hoagland writes. “He also was known for careening down the rugby pitch, and, on the morning of September 11, 2001, for charging unarmed down the aisle of a doomed Boeing 757 to face knife-wielding Islamist thugs in a hijacked cockpit. “No one among his pick-up team of fellow passengers was asking ‘Are you straight? Are you gay?’ No one doubted that a guy who weighed 220 and stood 6’4” tall – who could run over a charging opponent on the field, and ran with the bulls in Pamplona earlier that summer – would be an asset to a desperate group trying to overcome a threat onboard an airliner. “The world has its share of strong, heroic gay men. Gay men in sports uniforms and military uniforms have been winning America’s games and fighting America’s battles for a long time: quietly, humbly, and in the face of vicious bigotry. “I hope you and I may have an opportunity to talk sometime. I prefer to believe you didn’t mean to offend. Good luck to you.” Daly has since spoken to GLAAD and followed his Tweeted apology with the following statement: We live in a time where gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals find courage every day to overcome adversity, stand up to bullying and find equality. I’m truly saddened that my words today suggested otherwise. I’ve long been a supporter of Gay and Lesbian rights, and I’m saddened that my comments, however unintentional, offended anyone, specifically members of the LGBT community. The fact that I have hurt anyone is devastating. I’m not that guy. I’m proud to be an ally of the LGBT community and will continue to fight with them.

In the Trayvon Martin Aftermath, How Soon Is Too Soon for Neighborhood Watch?

High five to Fox for pulling their bullet-ridden Neighborhood Watch marketing materials from Florida theaters this week following the February killing of Trayvon Martin. Trying to get as much distance as possible from the teaser’s emphasis on grown men Ben Stiller , Vince Vaughn , Jonah Hill , and Richard Ayoade stalking and finger-shooting suburban kids is a good idea and a sensitive move — not to mention a no-brainer necessity, PR-wise — so the studio’s forthcoming campaign will likely focus on the film’s “broad alien-invasion comedy” elements. But even four months from now, will it be too soon for Neighborhood Watch to make fun escapism out of vigilante violence? A Fox representative explained the studio’s decision to THR : “We are very sensitive to the Trayvon Martin case, but our film is a broad alien-invasion comedy and bears absolutely no relation to the tragic events in Florida,” a Fox spokesperson tells THR. “The movie, which is not scheduled for release for several months, was made and these initial marketing materials were released before this incident ever came to light. The teaser materials were part of an early phase of our marketing and were never planned for long-term use. Above all else, our thoughts go out to the families touched by this terrible event.” Extending that retraction on a wider scale might even be in order, seeing as the media firestorm over Martin and his shooter, George Zimmerman, is now a national conversation and not just one for Floridians. Which brings us to the big question: Is the Trayvon Martin case too big, too incendiary, or just too heartbreaking for Neighborhood Watch to come out as planned, and perform well, in four months’ time? What’s in the teaser trailer may be an indication of the problem here: Whether or not it’s revealed in marketing materials, the film seems to glorify the kind of volunteer policing that Martin shooter Zimmerman was a part of in real life. The sounds of Dr. Dre’s “Still D.R.E.” underscore the comically grandiose slow-motion crawl of the Neighborhood Watch gang — they’re lazy suburbanites using a self-important Neighborhood Watch front to get away from their families, but once the aliens invade they’ll become true-blue heroes. (Since I haven’t seen the film, I’m only guessing here — maybe it’ll turn out that the aliens were only visiting peaceably, their presence horribly misunderstood by overzealous would-be heroes, who resolve their differences with nonviolence.) That setup would be fairly harmless if it didn’t tap directly into the debate over what really happened on February 26 in Sanford, FL. Zimmerman was an active Neighborhood Watch captain in his gated community who, by many accounts, took citizen policing very seriously; following Martin as a suspicious person on the day of the incident led to the unarmed 17-year-old’s fatal shooting, which Zimmerman claimed was an act of self-defense. Neighborhood Watch , penned by Seth Rogen , Evan Goldberg, and Jared Stern as a ” hard R ” and directed by Lonely Island ‘s Akiva Schaffer, is still on Fox’s schedule for a July 27 wide release. According to the THR report, the studio doesn’t plan on pushing back the debut, despite the ongoing furor over the Martin case. I’d like to think that Martin’s death will be resolved but not forgotten by then, if only to give his family and all who’ve become invested in the case some closure, but I’m skeptical that four months — or five, or a year, or any measure of time — will be long enough that I won’t be thinking of George Zimmerman while watching Ben Stiller blow away the aliens who darken his doorstep. ‘Breaking Dawn – Part 2’ Trailer Teases ‘Beautiful’ Vampire Bella

Kristen Stewart’s red eyes left one fan ‘speechless’ at the midnight premiere of ‘The Hunger Games’ in NYC. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Stacey Sommer Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in “Breaking Dawn – Part I” Photo: Summit Entertainment NEW YORK — At midnight Friday (March 23), fans had two things to be excited for: the premiere of “The Hunger Games” and the trailer for “Breaking Dawn – Part 2.” The full trailer made its debut ahead of “Hunger Games” and, in it, not too many big, action-packed reveals are made, but one thing’s for sure: Bella is in full vampire mode. “I think the ‘Twilight’ trailer was really interesting,” Esther Portyansky told MTV News at a screening in New York City. “Usually trailers are more about the plot, but I think the people that are gonna watch know what happens in the last one so it was more character shots and getting people’s attentions. Vampire Bella was very beautiful. I liked the red eyes.” The film has amped up Twilighters’ excitement for the November release. “I was so happy. I am so excited,” Elana Lerner said. “I saw the first part of ‘Breaking Dawn’ at 12, and I will do the second one again. It looks awesome. That last part of the trailer, where she looks like she’s about to pounce on that animal, was nice.” Joanna Cruz added, “I’m speechless. I really don’t know what to say about that. It was so quick. It didn’t even give what was going to go on in the movie, all we saw was the red eyes.” That tease was enough to whet Stephen Carrasco’s appetite. “It looks cool. I didn’t read any of the books, but I saw the films and I’m excited to see it,” he said. “It looks good. Those contacts are awesome, like work the red-eye thing.” With more trailers expected to drop before the premiere later this year, Carrasco wants to see “more killing,” and Portyansky agreed that she’d love to see more action. “The next ‘Twilight’ trailer, I think I’d like to see part of the showdown among the vampire coalitions, ’cause as much as the character shots are really good, I’m definitely looking forward to the action.” Directed by Bill Condon, the final movie in the “Twilight” franchise will hit theaters on November 16. ‘Snow White’ Trailer Focuses On Charlize Theron, Kristen Stewart Rivalry

Clip show Theron’s cold-hearted Queen Ravenna on the hunt for Stewart’s sword-wielding Snow White. By Jocelyn Vena Kristen Stewart in the “Snow White and the Huntsman” trailer Photo: Universal “Snow White and the Huntsman” is certainly the antidote to “Mirror Mirror.” For every giggle that Julia Roberts throws about in the trailer for “Mirror,” Charlize Theron (Queen Ravenna) throws a cold stare and an even colder threat in a new “Show White” trailer released Monday (March 19). Bathed in dark images and darker themes, this “Snow White” blockbuster focuses on the bloodthirsty queen in her hunt for revenge and eternal power. The key to continue her tyranny and remain the fairest of them all is Snow White’s (Kristen Stewart’s) heart. Enter the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth), who has been ordered to get that heart, or else. With the classical premise laid out, the trailer is full of a sword-wielding, chainmail-clad Snow White, out to use her innate good to destroy the queen’s evil. The trailer focuses on the good-versus-evil plot while teasing the film’s eye-catching effects and landscapes. Where Ravenna brings destruction, Snow brings light, love and life. Much of Stewart’s role in the trailer relies on her ability to look both tough and vulnerable. “I see what she sees,” Stewart’s Snow reveals at one point. “I can kill her.” The trailer closes with Ravenna pledging, “Let them come,” as her evil cackle plays out the trailer. When Theron and Stewart stopped by the “Today” show Monday (March 19), Theron talked about reviving fairytales for modern audiences. “I think these stories, thematically, bleed into a lot of stuff that’s relevant,” she said. “So I’m not shocked that we’re having an outbreak of a lot of these kinds of classic fairytales being retold. There’s a way to do them in different worlds, and I think that’s the case with this. They were definitely made for very specific audiences and very different audiences.” So, was Stewart shocked by turning “Snow White” into an action film? “It is [an action movie]. It had a reason,” she told the “Today” show on Monday (March 19). “It never felt like it was a movie where you were just trying to have a strong girl character be badass. You want to join the cause, like any good script you read. I believe in it so much.” What do you think of the “Snow White and the Huntsman” trailer? Leave your comment below! Gretchen Rossi on Tamra Barney Engagement: What a Farce!

You absolutely will not believe this, but at least one person out there thinks an engagement has been arranged for the sake of reality TV ratings. We’ll give you a moment to get over the shock… In the wake of Tamra Barney’s engagement to Eddie judge , co-star Gretchen Rossi has come out and called BS on the entire arrangement. Without quoting any sources directly, TMZ claims Rossi was actually approached by Real Housewives of Orange County producers first, as they asked her and Slade Smiley to get engaged on this season’s finale. They even, allegedly, bribed Smiley with a free ring and an all-expenses-paid trip to wherever he wanted to pop the question. But Slade and Gretchen turned down this offer. Tamra and Eddie, though, jumped all over it and the same insider says Bravo helped organize the entire proposal. No comment as of yet from the network, Rossi or Judge. [Photos: WENN.com]

Snow White and the Huntsman Trailer: Full-Length, Even More Badass!

Snow White and the Huntsman released its latest, full-length theatrical trailer this weekend, and the film looks even more bad ass than before, if that’s possible. Snow White and the Huntsman hits theaters June 1. Here’s the trailer: Snow White and the Huntsman Trailer (Full-Length)
