Bon Jovi Bring Arena Rock To The American Music Awards

Band plays new single ‘What Do You Got’ and mini-greatest-hits set. By Gil Kaufman Jon Bon Jovi performs at the American Music Awards on Sunday Photo: ABC Dick Clark Productions Bon Jovi could have played any one of a dozen tunes to celebrate the recent release of their new greatest-hits album. But in keeping with their relentless forward march, Jon Bon and the boys played the new hit single from the album at Sunday night’s (November 21) American Music Awards. The majestic “What Do You Got,” which features the band’s patented mix of cowboy balladry and pop bravado, was like a Bon Jovi greatest hit in a nutshell, with its combination of Jon’s street-tough-done-good lyrics about the power of love and guitarist Richie Sambora’s chiming guitar and towering backup vocals. The legendary New Jersey rockers were, of course, celebrating the new greatest-hits album and screened the concert movie “Bon Jovi – The Circle Tour” in theaters nationwide, so it’s not like they were going to leave the room hangin’. With more than 120 million albums sold over a legendary career, they had to cough up some of the good stuff. As Sambora ripped into the chunky intro of “You Give Love a Bad Name” and digital flashes lit up the TV screen, audience member Russell Brand couldn’t contain his elated smile while the band cranked out the hit that put them on the map more than 20 years ago. Sambora hooked up the talk-box and Bon Jovi spread his arms in triumph for another fist-pumping staple, “It’s My Life,” as the crowd, including a head-bobbing Jada Pinkett Smith and a devil-horn-flashing Jenny McCarthy, danced in the aisles, delighted that an arena-rock show had suddenly broken out in the midst of what they thought was just going to be another run-of-the-mill awards show. Diddy-Dirty Money Get AMA Crowd Swaying With ‘Coming Home’

Typically flashy rapper slows it down at the American Music Awards — but he still brings the fireworks. By Jayson Rodriguez Diddy performs at the American Music Awards on Sunday Photo: Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images/DCP Diddy knows a thing or two about showstopping performances, but during the 2010 American Music Awards, the hip-hop mogul had a more measured set as Dirty Money’s Dawn Richard and Kalenna flanked him through a reflective rendition of his latest, “Coming Home.” “What am I supposed to do when the club lights come on?” Diddy rapped, sporting all-black attire and a half-moon hair part. “It’s easy to be Puff, but it’s harder to be Sean/ What if my twins ask why I ain’t marry their mom?/ Damn, how do I respond?/ What if my son stares with a face like my own?/ And says he wants to be like me when he’s grown?/ Sh–, but I ain’t finish growing.” The rest of his Dirty Money crew wore white and followed Diddy’s lead in the elegant performance. The rapper arrived in a whirl of smoke while his orchestra played up the triumphant track, which will appear on Diddy-Dirty Money’s forthcoming Last Train to Paris. As he reached the stirring lyrics about his offspring, the camera panned to his youngest son, Christian Combs, who had a smile as bright as his father’s jewelry. Fireworks dotted the superstar’s performance, and the audience swayed their arms in unison throughout. “Let the rain wash away/ All the pain of yesterday,” Richard and Kalenna sang on the chorus. “I know my kingdom awaits/ And they’ve forgiven my mistakes/ I’m coming home, coming home/ Tell the world I’m coming home.” What did you think of Diddy’s AMA performance? Rihanna Opens American Music Awards With Island Flavor

Loud singer belts ‘Love the Way You Lie Part II,’ ‘What’s My Name?’ and ‘Only Girl in the World,’ in nine-minute long set. By Mawuse Ziegbe Rihanna performs at the American Music Awards on Sunday Photo: Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images/DCP Days after dropping her fifth disc, Loud, Rihanna made a flamboyant statement at the American Music Awards on Sunday night (November 21). Although the Barbadian singer, who was also nominated for Favorite Female Artist, recently admitted to MTV News that kicking off the show “is a lot of pressure,” the flame-haired songstress handled awards-show opening duties with aplomb and her typical sassy energy. The singer opened the performance a cappella with “Love the Way You Lie Part II,” perched on a stylized tree hovering above a field of sable-colored blades of grass. After plummeting from the “tree,” which was actually a glowing spiked set piece, she emerged from plumes of fog and busted into “What’s My Name?” A lightning-quick costume change revealed her in a black-and-white bra top and boy shorts, her red hair twisted into tight curls as she gyrated to the beat of the calypso-tinged jam. She belted the track solo until dancers in fringed skirts invaded the stage for a dancehall–themed breakdown. Rihanna then kicked up the island theme, as drummers pounded away and more dancers rocking tribal-themed garb hit the stage for “Only Girl in the World.” The drummers encircled the Ri and the strobe lights kicked on as she rocked the bridge, jamming alongside the musicians with sultry abandon. Flames shot up from the back of the set as about a dozen dancers helped her wrap up the high-energy, cross-cultural performance. All the characters left the stage to allow Rihanna to return to the large spiky set-piece and end as she began, crooning the final notes solo. The star-packed audience rose for a standing ovation. While Rihanna is still in her early twenties, the songbird is five albums deep into her superstar career. Even with a towering stack of hits behind her the Loud singer has said she’s amped to unleash her latest effort, which she pegs as a collection of tracks that really sum up what she’s all about. “I can’t believe it’s the fifth album already,” she told the BBC in October. “That’s insane to think about. … I’ve never been this excited about anything I’ve done creatively, and this is just the perfect Rihanna album: Every song is tailored to me.” She also wanted the record to reflect her signature style, not just crank out standard-issue pop jams. “I wanted songs that were all Rihanna songs that nobody else could do. I didn’t want the generic pop record that Ke$ha or Lady Gaga or Katy Perry could just do and it’ll work. I wanted a song, or songs, that were Rihanna songs, that only I could do, had that little West Indian vibe to it, had that certain tone, a certain sass and a certain energy.” What did you think of Rihanna’s performance at the AMAs? Black Eyed Peas Give Glow-In-The-Dark AMA Performance

Band gets in on the dance action during a neon-lit rendition of their new tune ‘This Time (The Dirty Bit).’ By James Dinh Black Eyes Peas’ Fergie performs at the American Music Awards on Sunday Photo: Christopher Polk/AMA2010/Getty Images/DCP If there’s one act who knows just how to get everyone on their feet, it’s the Black Eyed Peas. On Sunday (November 21), the group showed up at the American Music Awards to perform their brand-new single, “This Time (The Dirty Bit),” delivering a flashy, glow-in-the-dark spectacle. Descending from four box chambers, each BEP member remained the focus on the dark stage as will.i.am sang the beginning lines of their new single, which samples the “Dirty Dancing” theme song, “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life.” While the frontman belted his semi-autotuned notes, each of the bandmates rose up and down in their flashing chamber until they reached the floor and emerged to show off futuristic neon outfits. Throughout the song, the quartet crooned to the tune and worked the stage as they displayed some freestyle dancing moves alongside a series of dancers wearing box-shaped headpieces. After the performance ended, will.i.am made sure to plug the release of the Peas’ new album, saying, “November 30, The Beginning . Welcome to the future!” In addition to their neon-lit number, BEP also hit the stage to accept the award for Favorite Band, Duo or Group, beating out Lady Antebellum and Train for the honor. “This Time” is the lead single from the Black Eyed Peas’ upcoming album, The Beginning . The 12-song collection is an ’80s-influenced effort that promises to once again bring listeners to the dance floor. Fans likely will get to see the band on another big stage this February, as it’s been reported that the Black Eyed Peas will descend on Cowboys Stadium in Dallas for the upcoming Super Bowl halftime show . Daniel Radcliffe Felt ‘Great Responsibility’ During ‘Deathly Hallows’

‘We’re not in school … so we automatically feel more adult,’ he tells MTV News of the three leads. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Daniel Radcliffe Photo: MTV News Remember those long-ago days in “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” when the young boy wizard first entered the hallowed halls of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry? The time Harry and Ron became best buds on the train out of King’s Cross? How Harry and Hermione first clashed as Gryffindor housemates before eventually bonding? What a difference a decade makes. The first part of “Deathly Hallows,” based on J.K. Rowling’s seventh book in the series, finds the three friends far from the safety and supervision of Hogwarts, fitfully bidding goodbye to their adolescent lives and embracing adulthood. Portraying that tricky transition, Daniel Radcliffe told MTV News, is exactly what makes this film “very special,” setting it apart from previous installments.

MRC-TV: Bozell Addresses PBS Editing Out Tina Fey’s Anti-Palin Jokes at Mark Twain Prize Ceremony

Upon receiving the Kennedy Center's Mark Train Prize for American Humor on November 9, comedian Tina Fey trashed Sarah Palin in her acceptance speech. By the time PBS broadcast the taped ceremony, the taxpayer-subsidized network had edited out some of Fey's harsher jokes that maligned the former Alaska governor. NewsBusters publisher and Media Research Center founder Brent Bozell appeared in studio on today's “Fox & Friends” to address the controversy, lauding PBS for doing the right thing by making those edits. M. Night Shyamalan Says ‘Last Airbender’ Was ‘Enhanced’ By 3-D

Director tried to use much-maligned post-production 3-D subtly By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz M. Night Shyamalan Photo: Brian Jacks/ MTV News As movie studios and filmmakers rushed to capitalize on the 3-D wave, there have been plenty of successes (“Avatar,” “Toy Story 3,” “How to Train Your Dragon”) and a few flops — particularly when the post-production conversion is applied (“Clash of the Titans,” “The Last Airbender”). When MTV News caught up with “The Last Airbender” director M. Night Shyamalan to discuss his involvement in this week’s “Devil,” we asked for his thoughts on the controversy surrounding the new practice of post-production 3-D. “I knew as soon as we were deciding to do the conversion that we were going to get that [criticism] because it has a stigma to it,” Shyamalan said of the flack critics and fans heaped on “Airbender.” “I definitely do everything very minimal — the sound, the movement of the camera — and when I was doing the 3-D, I decided to do it really gently and just enhance the shot,” he explained. “If we went shot-for-shot and I showed it to you, it was just enhanced. ‘Wow, I can see the depth. Wow, it does feel more grand. Wow, it does feel more beautiful. I’m more into it.’ ” Shyamalan said his goal was to use 3-D subtly, but the format is perhaps too new to be used in that manner, versus the in-your-face, arm-reaching-into-the-audience 3-D of years past. “That’s not my aesthetic,” he said. The director said he loved the film’s 3-D team, which was very protective of the film and staying true to the artistry of it. “We would talk through the philosophy of each shot a little bit,” he said. Shyamalan said the conversion process was a complete learning experience for him. “I enjoyed learning about it a great deal,” he said. “This whole movie was about me learning things I didn’t know, and I’m glad I learned about it.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Last Airbender.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Justin Bieber Would Totally Tap Cheryl Cole and Katy Perry

Justin Bieber has moved on from Megan Fox and Kim Kardashian. The 16-year old singer, who has expressed fondness for both those older women and even gotten all wet with the latter for a recent Elle photo shoot , has now set his sights on two other sexy celebs. Sort of. Speaking to the British version of OK! Weekly , Bieber made his latest famous crushes clear, although also admitted he’s probably too young to date them. “Cheryl Cole and Katy Perry are two of the hottest girls in the world – and so normal and funny with it. If I was a few years older, they are the kind of girls I’d like to date. I want a younger version of Cheryl and Katy – a mixture of two would be hot.” You can say that again, Justin! Age difference aside, Cole is getting serious with Derek Hough, while Perry is engaged to Russell Brand. Therefore, Justin has another idea: “Maybe they could coach me and tell me how to work out which ones are the good ones. That would be pretty awesome.” Bieber has already shared a few of the traits he looks for in a partner , but said he’d love to ask “[Cole and Perry] out for dinner so they can tell me the best way to win a woman like them.” Plus, who knows what might happen once drinks start flowing, right? We like the way Justin thinks!

Dina Lohan Defends Lindsay, Blames Judge, is One of the Worst Parents of All Time

Dina Lohan needs to shut her yap. Lindsay Lohan’s enabler and mother simply will not acknowledge her kid’s faults in any capacity. Unconditional love is one thing. Living in denial, babying grown adults and setting a terrible example overall are quite another. Argumentative diva Dina appeared on the Today show Friday morning and promptly defended the behavior of Lindsay Lohan while placing all the blame on the criminal justice system, specifically the judge who sentenced her to jail. Basically, in DinaLand, Marsha Revel refused to give Linds a free pass (which she basically got anyway from the correctional facility), therefore she sucks. “I’m not condoning drinking and driving, but she’s still paying the price for what she did in 2007,” said Dina . “She’s changed. She’s grown up considerably.” This is not true . Lindsay repeatedly violated the very simple terms of her probation, acted like she was beyond reproach, and finally got hers. End of story. To Dina, Lindsay can do no wrong. This explains a whole lot about the train wreck’s conduct over the past several years. [Photos: PacificCoastNewsOnline.com] Asked what accounted for the change, Dina told Matt Lauer, “Age. Living life. Knowing life. Growing up.” Right. Whatever that means. Very convincing, Dina. Accusing Revel of “going overboard” and “playing hardball” by ordering Lindsay to jail for 90 days (she served 13) and to rehab, Dina claims the judge recused herself from the case this week because she was about to be fired. Lindsay “was [ thrown in jail ] for missing a couple of classes and was working at the time,” Dina Lohan says, apparently confusing “clubbing” with “working.” Pressed about coverage of her daughter’s problems, Dina said it’s “propaganda,” and “pre-orchestrated. You’re reading things that are not based on fact.” Whining about attention she craves, she adds: “Her life is magnified. She is under a microscope … Lindsay doesn’t realize a lot of people are watching her.” For now, in rehab, “She’s great,” said Dina. “She’s been through a lot.” What do you think? Lindsay Lohan belongs in …
