What’s It Like To Sing With Green Day At Lollapalooza? Dan Michie Knows

‘The entire time, I wasn’t even thinking,’ super-fan tells MTV News of performing ‘Longview’ with the band. By James Montgomery Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong performs at Lollapalooza Photo: Rich Sancho/ MTV News It’s been a fixture at recent Green Day shows for the band to pick a hyperventilating fan out of the crowd and have them sing “Longview,” but rarely — if ever — do they perform the song as mightily as 17-year-old Dan Michie, who wowed fans with his rendition (and boundless enthusiasm) during the band’s Saturday night set at Lollapalooza . In fact, Michie ruled the stage to such an extent that MTV News tracked him down and asked him all about his moment in the spotlight. And, not surprisingly, he doesn’t remember a whole lot of it. “To be honest, the entire time, I wasn’t even thinking. It just happened,” he laughed. “When Billie [Joe Armstrong] picked me, everyone was screaming so loudly that I didn’t know what he was saying. I knew he was pointing to someone around me, and before I knew it, security was yanking me over the barrier. One guard carried me like a baby and pushed me towards the stage, and then, since it was the first time I’d used my legs in like eight hours, I almost tripped and fell on my face.” Luckily, he didn’t. He slowly got to the stage and saw Armstrong (and tens of thousands of fans) staring directly at him. And then, things went completely blank. “There are no words to describe it. If you’ve ever seen 80,000 people before, that’s one thing, but seeing them look back at you, that’s something that doesn’t even seem real,” Michie said. “And then, when I was walking towards [Armstrong] to give him a hug, I was just thinking, ‘Oh my God.’ You see him in pictures every day, but it’s a completely different thing to see him in real life.” And then, after giving Armstrong a quick kiss — “It was kind of wet,” Michie joked — Green Day kicked into the song, and Michie just sort of took off. He rocketed back and forth across the stage, belting out the lyrics perfectly, while the crowd cheered and the band tried very hard not to crack up. And, as is par for the course, he doesn’t really remember much of this either. “It just happened. I didn’t have to think of the words; they just came out,” he said. “And I had seen videos of other fans singing [the song], and they just stood there, so I knew I wanted to run around and go crazy. But I don’t really remember doing it.” After his performance — and subsequent ovation — Armstrong gave Michie a guitar, which was certainly amazing but sort of presented him with a whole new challenge: How the heck was he going to get home? He had originally planned on taking the train, but Green Day’s tour manager wouldn’t allow it, so, for a moment, he appeared to be stuck in Grant Park. Thankfully, the band arranged for a driver to take Michie back to his house in the suburbs of Chicago, where he — and the guitar — now safely rest. And though he plays in a band (they’re called Patmos ), he has no plans of ever using the guitar onstage. “It’s going in a frame,” he said. In the days since his performance, Michie has become a bit of a star. Footage from Lollapalooza has made the rounds on YouTube , and complete strangers are leaving him congratulatory messages on his Facebook page. For a kid who’s a Green Day obsessive, it’s pretty much the greatest thing that ever could’ve happened. And it’s made even sweeter by the fact that he had come so close to joining the band before, only to have his hopes dashed at the last second. “When I saw Green Day at the United Center last summer, Billie was looking for people to pull up and play ‘Jesus of Suburbia’ on guitar,” he said. “I had a sign, and after he had pulled up a kid and kicked him off right away, he talked to me for a solid 13 seconds about playing the song. He then proceeded to pick a kid who was about three people away from me. I know what it’s like to be disappointed like that, but believe me, if you try really hard and be nice to people, your dreams will come true.” What would you do if your favorite band pulled you up onstage? Brooke Mueller Tries to Derail Charlie’s ‘Train’ Story

Report: Charlie Sheen Tossed Brooke Mueller Around "Like a Rag Doll," Actor Blames Attack on Train Single

Last week, Charlie Sheen was sentenced to 30 days in rehab for his infamous Christmas Day fight with Brooke Mueller. But it’s clear this actor belongs behind bars. According to a newly-released police report, the December 2009 attack – in which Sheen allegedly held a knife to his wife’s throat – wasn’t the first time these two got into it physically. Both Sheen and Mueller confirmed to officers on the scene that day that Brooke had suffered head trauma during an incident a couple months earlier. The two sides disagree on whether that injury was inflicted intentionally, however. Wrote Officer Rick Magnuson: “I asked [Sheen] if he ever harmed Mueller in the past. [Sheen] stated that approximately two months ago, in California, Mueller accused him of sleeping with prostitutes. [Sheen] stated that he denied this allegation, which escalated into a ‘huge fight.’ He added that when Mueller attempted to leave the argument, he grabbed her by the wrist, causing her to fall to the ground.” The Two and a Half Men star acknowledges Mueller sought medical treatment at the time, but claims he was acting to simply restrain his wife when the accident occurred. But Brooke told a different story. When Magnuson questioned Mueller about the fall 2009 fight, she got “upset,” he wrote in his report, adding that neither side contacted authorities to report this altercation. “She was very adamant that [Sheen] intentionally hurt her by throwing her to the ground, like a ‘rag doll.’” What does the band Train have to do with any of this? According to Sheen, it was the popular single “Drops of Jupiter” that contributed to the Christmas Day fracas. He told police at his home that he and his daughter “share an affinity for both astronomy” and the Train song. Mueller took exception to this, allegedly, growing irate and jealous and asking why Charlie has a tune he shared with his daughter, but not one with her. Now, with the couple living apart and divorce likely imminent , the questions remain: Did the wind sweep them off their feet? Did they finally get the chance to dance along the light of day and head back toward the Milky Way? And do they miss each other while looking for themselves out there?

China Developing a Train That Will Run at 620 Miles Per Hour

Get ready for some high speed transport action – Chinese researchers are currently developing a vacuum maglev train that they believe will run at speeds up to 620 miles per hour. This just a few years after Japan announced their — then totally awe inspiring — plans for a maglev train that would run at 310 mph. The train will run on magnetic levitation tracks built into vacuum tubes underground and will be sucked along at an average speed of almost 400 miles per hour. What’s the cost for this zippy technology, you ask? A mere $2.95 million more than the current high speed rail for each kilometer of track. Read more: China Developing a Train That Will Run at 620 Miles Per Hour | Inhabitat – Green Design Will Save the World Maglev trains utilize a system of very large magnets to lift and propel train cars. The magnetic system is able to move at high speeds while being quieter and smoother than a traditional wheeled mass transit train. The current world record for speed on a maglev train is 361 miles per hour and was set in Japan in 2003. The Chinese plan to blow this record out of the water by coupling their maglev technology with underground tunnels that will act as vacuums. The most common problem facing high speed transit is air friction that slows train cars down. The Chinese plan to eliminate this problem with their vacuum tunnels and say their trains will not have to compete with air friction while they travel. Researchers say that the trains could be ready for action in ten years. Though this high speed wonder seems like a great idea, the economic cost of the technology is staggering. With the added price tag of the vacuum tunnels to make these trains extra speedy, we’re wondering if the time saved traveling on these record breaking trains will really be worth the impact of their construction. Motorized Shoe Concept Gives Public Transit a Leg Up Over Cars (Video)

Image via Gizmodo Getting from home to the bus stop or from the train station to the office can mean needing an extra set of wheels like a bike, making driving a car continue to be a more appealing option than taking public transit. But a new concept called Tredways hopes to make crossing the too-short-to-drive-too-far-to-walk distance from point A to point B faster and easier by turning your shoes into a motorized set of wheels. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Kris Allen Explains ‘Weird’ Video Treatment For ‘The Truth’

‘There is a concept, kind of,’ former American Idol says of the video for his next song. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Kris Allen Photo: MTV News Kris Allen admits that when fans listen to his duet with Train frontman Pat Monahan, “The Truth,” it may come off as some sort of romantic duet. But he explained that there’s another way of looking at it. And he hopes that when the video is shot, that other, less romantic take on the song is made clear. “There is a concept, kind of. I got sent a video treatment by the same guy who did ‘Live Like We’re Dying’ [director Marco Puig] and it sounded interesting,” Allen recently told MTV News. “So I think it’s gonna happen. He’s really creative. I really like him [and] it’s a really weird treatment. In some way [Pat will be in the video], yes. The way that he was gonna be involved was not [romantic]. It kind of made sense.” Despite what anyone might think of the song’s meaning, Allen says the fans have been liking it. “We played it Atlanta the other night and people were freaking out about it. I think people really enjoy it,” he explained, adding that the jury on Allen and Monahan is still out about the song’s message. For instance, when the guys sing “I still keep your photographs/ I remember how we used to laugh/ I can keep on losing sleep/ If you’re OK with being torn in half,” could they be singing about each other? “We were talking about this other day. I think it’s more of maybe an experience thing or maybe we have dated the same girl and she did the same thing to both of us and now we’re in the broken boyfriend/girlfriend club,” he said. And if fans are hoping for some new music from Allen sometime soon, Allen says he’s working on it. “I am, you know, a little bit now,” he revealed. “We’re in the mode and we have a schedule. There’s a couple things out there. I’m excited about it. I would love to bring [the band to the recording sessions] if they would like to. That would be really cool.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Kris Allen Related Photos MTV.com Exclusive: Kris Allen Related Artists Kris Allen

Justin Bieber Kicks Off Tour With High-Flying Stunts

Usher appeared onstage in Hartford for a few seconds, but didn’t sing. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber (file) Photo: George Pimentel/ WireImage HARTFORD, Connecticut — Lights went down, low sticks went up and lots and lots of screaming commenced as a video of Justin Bieber playing video games plays flashed on the stage, before the teen dream finally appeared in person. Dressed in all-white, the teen idol showed off some karate moves, whipping the crows at the XL Center into a frenzy as he opened with “Love Me.” Little did they know that a few high kicks would be the least of his stunts on Wednesday, the opening night of his My World 2.0 summer tour. Bieber made his way to center stage to sing “Heartbreaker Baby.” He demonstrated his pop-and-lock skills before asking the crowd, “What’s up? We do it all for you guys!” He then slowed it down a bit, using his sugary-sweet R&B-tinged voice for “U Smile.” For “Runaway Love” he did some chair choreography reminiscent of the Backstreet Boys “As Long as You Love Me” video. “I’m feeling real good, how about you all?” he asked. “I see a lot of beautiful girls out there.” In order to see those ladies better, Bieber broke out his acoustic guitar as he sat in a heart-shaped cage that was lifted above the crowd. He played “Never Let You Go” while suspended in the air, followed by “Favorite Girl.” He then got to what has become a favorite (if envy-producing) moment in his shows. “The one thing I do when I get to every city is find one less lonely girl,” he told the room before bringing a lucky fan onto the stage, giving her roses and singing “One Less Lonely Girl.” For his next stunt, during “Somebody to Love,” Bieber and his dancers took to the air and Bieber pretended to climb the side of a building and spray-paint it. He slowed down the pace a bit for “Overboard,” which features opening act Jessica Jarrell. The girls went crazy when they held hands for part of it. He asked the ladies, “Isn’t she amazing? You guys are amazing.” Part of the night belonged to Legacy, Bieber’s YouTube-discovered backup singers, who performed an a cappella version of radio hits including Usher’s “OMG” and Train’s “Hey Soul Sister.” After leaving the stage, Bieber came out again and treated the crowd to “Up” as he descended from the ceiling in a cage. Following a break, he performed, “One Time” and “That Should Be Me.” He even sat down at the drums for “Walk This Way.” Then Sean Kingston joined Bieber onstage for their party-ready collabo, “Eenie Meenie.” “Down to Earth” was the last song of the set. But to no one’s surprise Bieber returned for an encore. “I couldn’t just leave you guys,” he said, before singing “With You” a cappella. Then he gave the girls what they wanted: “Baby.” At the very end, mentor Usher showed up said a quick “hi” to the fans and retreated backstage. Bieber soon followed and the night came to a close.
