Motorized Shoe Concept Gives Public Transit a Leg Up Over Cars (Video)

Image via Gizmodo Getting from home to the bus stop or from the train station to the office can mean needing an extra set of wheels like a bike, making driving a car continue to be a more appealing option than taking public transit. But a new concept called Tredways hopes to make crossing the too-short-to-drive-too-far-to-walk distance from point A to point B faster and easier by turning your shoes into a motorized set of wheels. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Illumitex Wants to Make Your Lightbulbs Square (and More Efficient)

Photo: Illumitex Brilliant Idea Unless we want to see most of human civilization shut down as soon as the sun sets, we’ll have to keep finding ways to produce artificial light. But how can we do that in a way that uses as little energy as possible and that produces no toxic waste? Illumitex is a startup from Texas that thinks it can take advantage of the physical characteristics of light emitting diodes (LEDs) to make a better light than what has been on the market so far. What are they doing differently? Read on to find out…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

Compressed Air Runs Motorcycle for Up to 40 Minutes

Credit: Wildebeast1 via Flickr. Get on your bad motor scooter and ride. This motorcycle runs on compressed air, rather than polluting gas (like the one shown above). It’s been designed, conceptually, by two India scientists, and uses compressed air to turn a small air turbine, generating enough power to let a rider get wild for up to 40 minutes. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Dispatch from the Gulf Oil Spill: Why We Are All Responsible for the Cleanup

Photo courtesy of Philippe Cousteau We made it into Tampa late last night and took the one hour drive to the beach near St. Petersburg. It was going to be another long day and we were prepared to get up early and get to the beach for the cleanup. I had come here in partnership with the Ocean Conservancy, one of the leading ocean conservation organizations in the country. The whole idea was to organize a beach cleanup as a way to channel the collective sense of frustration and demonstrate that people can take action to help the oceans…with or without oil. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Why Own Any Mode of Transportation? Peugeot’s Mu Covers Them All

Peugeot started building bicycles in 1882 and cars in 1890, so they have a bit of a history in different modes of transportation. TreeHugger has been excited about car-sharing setups like zipcar and bike-sharing systems like Velib; product service systems like this let people have transportation when you need it rather than owning it when you don’t. Now Peugeot takes it one step further with “Mu”; They will supply you with anything you need, from a bicycle to a scooter to a car to a van, with options like child seats and rooftop boxes. It is coming to the UK next month, and the Telegraph looks at the pluses and minuses…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

Will Ford’s Electric Car Strategy Succeed?

Photo: Ford Do People Really Want Dedicated EV Models? It’s interesting to note how different Ford’s electrification strategy is from most of the other auto makers who are making electric cars and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). The majority seems to have learned from Toyota’s experience with the Prius and decided to make dedicated EV/PHEV models that don’t have gas-only versions: GM has the Volt, Fisker the Karma, Tesla the Roadster and Model S, Nissan the LEAF, etc. Ford’s is taking a different route…. Verizon Converts 501 Utility Vans to Compressed Natural Gas

Photo: Ford Is This a Good Idea? Replacing one fossil fuel might seem like a bad idea, and under certain circumstances I would definitely agree that it is, but sometimes you have to take what you can get while waiting for something better to come along. Many companies, like Verizon, have lots of utility vans that are currently powered by gasoline or diesel and that could benefit from a conversion to compressed natural gas (CNG). For more details on the environmental benefits of that, see below…. Read the full story on TreeHugger
