Peter Fonda Wrote Easy Rider in a Seedy Toronto Motel and You Should Too

Peter Fonda recently said that he wrote the script for Easy Rider without the aid of drugs between 1:30 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. in a low-rent Toronto motel. Since most of the film industry is currently in this very city, it seems like the perfect time to see if lightning will strike twice. Instead of sleeping tonight, I challenge all festival-goers to take a break from the blog updates and crowded screenings, hole up in the cheapest motel you can find and write your own script, Fonda-style. Imagine how much more you’d have to show for your trip! First person to change the direction of cinema for the next decade wins. The prize? Your entire personal life exposed by Peter Biskind. Violet Kowal, Other Mel Gibson Mistress, Lawyers Up

Remember Violet Kowal? Mel Gibson’s OTHER alleged mistress? No? Well, she wants to make sure she’s not left out of the actor’s recent saga – financially. Kowal, a 39-year-old “fitness model” (some have referred to her as a porn actress) from Poland, has just retained the services of attorney Gloria Allred. Back in May, we reported that Violet Kowal claimed she had an affair with Mel Gibson while Oksana Grigorieva was pregnant with their daughter Lucia. If he were putting it to Violet while living with Oksana (while married to Robyn), that would add a new twist – if it’s even true or he violated any laws. It’s unclear why Kowal needs legal representation at this point, but hey, it worked out for Rachel Uchitel fairly well. There’s eight digits of motivation. In case you haven’t read any celebrity gossip for the past month or so, Mel and Oksana are engaged in a brutal legal and custody battle over Lucia. The Mel Gibson tapes – in which he rants and berates her in the most foul way imaginable – and accusations of violence have dominated headlines. Mel has personally been MIA lately and that’s because he’s on a family fishing trip with two of his sons, much to Oksana Grigorieva’s consternation. Oksana’s laywers tried to schedule Gibson’s deposition for the ongoing child custody battle in the middle of his trip. The court date has been delayed. Her people think the delay is evidence that Mel is not committed to Lucia. TMZ reports Mel will be “front and center for his deposition in short order.”

Bethenny Getting Married Season Finale: Finding a Balance

It’s all about balance. That’s what Bethenny Frankel learned on last night’s season finale of her reality show, as both business and baby beckoned. As usual, a THG intern has reviewed the episode in depth, sharing her snark with readers below. Take it away! I have to say that for a finale episode, this one was quasi-boring.

Exclusive: John Legend’s ‘Inspiring Week In Africa,’ In His Own Words

Singer followed FIFA World Cup concert performance with visit to Tanzanian village where his Show Me Campaign is helping to fight poverty. By John Legend Farmers in Mbola tell John how they’ve been able to triple their crop yields using improved seeds, fertilizer and new techniques Photo: MTV News I had an exciting and inspiring week in Africa and I wanted to share the great news with you. The first part of my trip was in South Africa, where I performed at the exhilarating FIFA World Cup kickoff concert and watched my first-ever live soccer match — complete with vuvuzelas — and even visited a lion park. Many thanks to the South Africans for hosting such a thrilling event and giving me such a warm welcome! But before returning home from Africa, I made my way north to a little village called Mbola. Mbola is located in the Uyui district in midwestern Tanzania. Like many parts of Africa, it’s a beautiful place, but life is difficult there. Thirty-one percent of sub-Saharan Africa’s population is chronically undernourished and 63 percent of the people lack access to basic sanitation facilities. Still, the people there are warm, hardworking and optimistic about building a better life for their families and generations to come. The Show Me Campaign is trying to help them do just that. We raise funds to support our friends at the nonprofit organization Millennium Promise, helping them to provide clean water, better access to health care, education, higher-yielding food- and cash crops and Internet connectivity. For those of you who have supported the campaign — thank you from the bottom of my heart. Every time I visit Mbola, I leave feeling hopeful because of the progress they continue to make. Here’s an overview of how far we’ve come: Expanding Educational Opportunities for Children We firmly believe that every child deserves a quality education and we’re working hard to make sure every child in Mbola receives that opportunity. Since we were last there, a secondary school has been built in the area which previously had none. Before the new school was built, students who wanted a secondary education had to travel many miles into Tabora, the nearest town. The unfortunate result was that many youngsters in Mbola did not attend secondary school. Now with the new school in Mbola, a major barrier that prevented young villagers from pursuing a secondary education has been removed. We’ve ensured that we have 90 percent-plus attendance rates in our primary schools by funding new school construction, including classrooms and homes for teachers, and providing free school lunches. This school feeding program is actively maintained by the local community and relies on farmers to give a percentage of their food crops to the school. This encourages farmers to invest in their community and become stakeholders in the long-term development of the community. And we’ve recently equipped the schools with new computers; neither teachers nor students had previously had access. It’s exciting to see them use these incredible teaching and learning tools. Empowering Farmers Through Business Education, Credit and Financial Literacy In Mbola, we’ve always focused on helping farmers become significantly more productive by encouraging best practices in agricultural techniques and providing fertilizer and other tools to increase productivity. Recently, we’ve started the village’s first community bank to extend credit to farmers, helping them manage their small-business and personal financing needs more efficiently. This will make all of the reforms more sustainable, as the villagers will be more empowered and enjoy increased control over their own destinies. Imagine where your life would be if you — and everyone in your family — had never had access to a loan, or savings or checking account. This is what people in Mbola struggled with before. Expanding Health Facilities and Access to Health Care Until recently, there was only one health facility near Mbola, and it was four miles away. When walking is your main form of transportation, four miles is a long way, especially if you are ill. During this visit, I was able to see the dramatically improved and expanded health facilities in the community. New clinics and health centers have been erected to ensure that villagers have accessible health care close to home. We have dramatically reduced malaria through the distribution of medicated bed nets to every family. And if someone happens to get malaria, it is no longer a death sentence since the health centers are now equipped and able to quickly treat and cure malaria with low-cost drugs. Additional promising improvements include access to anti-retroviral drugs for patients infected with HIV and medical advancements to prevent transmission of the virus from mother to child. In addition, Ericsson has donated 3G mobile technology to improve communication between the community and the health centers. The results of this technology are amazing. In a region where distance hinders development, having instant mobile communication can be a lifesaver. Community health workers can not only phone in for emergency services but also use them to help diagnose, record and prescribe treatment. This technology, along with the manpower of trained health workers, is changing the face of health care delivery throughout rural areas like Mbola. Access to Water Many villages in rural Africa have either very little or no access to clean water, and Mbola wasn’t any different a few years ago. Building septic infrastructure is a big part of what we’ve done in the village and I was happy to be able to participate in the groundbreaking ceremony for another water tank. This tank will expand access to clean drinking water for residents by distributing clean water throughout the village via underground pipes. All in all, it was a great trip. I’m still a little jet-lagged from the many hours of travel, but I’m energized by the progress that has been made. Thank you, again, to those of you who have supported our efforts in Mbola. I hope you will continue to support the Show Me Campaign and encourage your friends and family to help us break the cycle of poverty. We can make a difference if we all work together. Asante! CBS’s Couric to Netanyahu: ‘Should You Be More Strongly Advocating’ on Obama’s Behalf?

In an interview with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday, CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric noted President Obama’s unpopularity in Israel and pressed Netanyahu to remedy that fact: “To change public opinion in your country, should you be more strongly advocating on his behalf?” Couric preceded that question by citing a recent poll of Israelis, which she seemed perplexed by: “Can you explain this to me, then? In a poll conducted a month ago – just a month ago – 71 percent of the Jews in Israel surveyed said they dislike President Obama; 47 percent expressed a strong dislike.” Earlier in the interview, Couric tried to gauge Netanyahu’s feelings toward Obama: “Do you trust Barack Obama?…surely there have been disappointments with the Obama administration. Can you just be candid with me and tell me how the administration has disappointed you?” While Couric asked about Israeli “disappointments” with Obama, she never cited any specific Obama administration policies or actions as the cause of those disappointments. On Wednesday’s Good Morning America on ABC, co-host George Stephanopoulos repeatedly badgered Netanyahu on ways to improve the U.S.-Israel relationship, placing no responsibility on President Obama to repair the alliance: “One analyst said, this is a false calm. Suggesting that you can’t or won’t deliver what President Obama is calling for in the peace process. So, what concrete steps are you prepared to take?” Here is a transcript of the first part of Couric’s July 7 interview with Netanyahu: 6:39PM ET KATIE COURIC: In other news, it appeared yesterday that President Obama had accepted an invitation from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to visit Israel. But today the White House said the trip, is, quote, ‘not on the books for this year.’ So have the two leaders really patched up their differences? That was part of the conversation when I interviewed the Prime Minister this afternoon here in New York. Do you trust Barack Obama? NETANYAHU: I trust Barack Obama, the President of the United States, to carry out with me the policies that have joined Israel and the United States in what Barack Obama has called the ‘unbreakable bond.’ We have common goals, common interests, and we now have a job to do to get on with our common goal of achieving peace with security. I trust we’ll be able to do that together. COURIC: While you want to accentuate the positive, clearly – that’s part of your mission here in the United States – surely there have been disappointments with the Obama administration. Can you just be candid with me and tell me how the administration has disappointed you? NETANYAHU: You know, you remind me of the Israeli press. They say ‘how come you had a good meeting with President Obama?’ Well, because I did. Because we actually see eye to eye on some central issues. The quest for peace, the danger of Iran, the need to bolster security for Israel and the region. That’s the truth. We do see it. Have we had differences? Of course we had. But I think some differences- COURIC: Some awkward moments? NETANYAHU: Yes, of course we had. So what? Even they are magnified and distorted. I think the President has a fine mind, and I can relate to it. COURIC: Can you explain this to me, then? In a poll conducted a month ago – just a month ago – 71 percent of the Jews in Israel surveyed said they dislike President Obama; 47 percent expressed a strong dislike. NETANYAHU: Well, maybe they don’t have the opportunity to have the kind of conversations that I had. And maybe they’re not aware, also, of the ongoing cooperation between Israel and the United States in the fields of security, intelligence. The fact that the Iron Dome program to protect against missiles is something that has been bolstered by this administration and by this president. We have a common goal to achieve a secure peace. I’m looking forward to working with him to achieve it. COURIC: Well, to change public opinion in your country, should you be more strongly advocating on his behalf? NETANYAHU: You know, I invited the President to Israel. I hope that he finds an appropriate time to come. I think that when people get to know him, and first lady Michelle Obama was very kind to my wife, they gave us a very warm reception. I hope I’ll be able to – we’ll be able to reciprocate in Israel.      COURIC: And later in this broadcast, what Prime Minister Netanyahu thinks the U.S. and Israel can do to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

‘The Hills’ Recap: Kristin Gets Her Flirt On In Costa Rica

Brody tries to play off his jealousy, and Audrina feels ‘awkward’ around Justin Bobby. By Amy Wilkinson Kristin Cavallari on “The Hills” Tuesday Photo: MTV For the 100th episode of “The Hills,” the gang (sans Lo) headed to Costa Rica for a little rest, relaxation and, of course, drama. As everyone explored their posh tropical resort, Stephanie wasted no time pulling Audrina aside to see how comfortable (or uncomfortable) she felt vacationing with Justin Bobby, whom Audrina had been seeing more of since she and Ryan Cabrera broke up. “It’s a little romantic of a trip,” Stephanie began. “Is that weird, since Justin is with us? Are you going to be OK?” For the most part, Audrina seemed unfazed, but she and Stephanie weren’t the only ones chatting about a potential hookup. “I think Justin and Audrina are probably going to hook up,” Kristin declared, though the rest of the group seemed sure it would be Kristin and Brody doing the hooking up. But later, Kristin confided in Stacie that she had her doubts about Brody. Stacie’s advice? “Flirt with every single guy here.” It didn’t take long for Kristin to follow at least part of Stacie’s advice as she got her flirt on with their lip-ringed bartender, Will. Brody was visibly irritated as Kristin told the bartender he was cute and accepted his invitation to hang out later that night — but Brody tried to play it off, saying, “I’m not going to get upset. I’m looking for chicks here too. You’re like my little sister.” Wow, harsh. Perhaps inspired by Kristin’s overtures, Justin Bobby began putting a few moves on Audrina. “You’re so cute with your hair up,” he complimented her. And later, as he was leaving the bar, he took it upon himself to grab Audrina’s butt — both cheeks! The next day, after an afternoon of surfing and ATV riding, everyone (including bartender Will) gathered for dinner. Sitting next to each other, Audrina asked JB why he’d been acting so strange lately. “It was awkward last night,” she said. “I had my reasons for not being my normal self,” Justin said, talking about Audrina’s emotional baggage. Brody again pretended not to be miffed by Will’s presence, offering a toast to Kristin, or as he so creepily put it, to “the sisters I’ve had sex with.” That was more than enough to rile Kristin, who grabbed Will, left the table and began making out with him by the pool. As the trip wound down, Justin made one last attempt at pleasantries with Audrina, asking her if she’d ever come back to Costa Rica, to which she simply responded, “Not with you.” Should Kristin and Brody quit playing around and get together for real? Sound off in the comments. “The Hills: Final Season” airs at 10 p.m. ET/PT every Tuesday, followed by “The City” at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.
