SNL Scorecard: Did the Rookies Save Gwyneth Paltrow’s Show?

Last night’s Gwyneth Paltrow-hosted edition of Saturday Night Live used an interesting formula: The first half of the show featured mostly the established cast-members (Kristen Wiig even got to do that Kristen Wiig thing that she does, a rarity as of late), which has been, at best, hit or miss all season. Then, after a notably feisty “Weekend Update,” new featured players Jay Pharoah, Taran Killam and Paul Brittain, respectively, gave us three individual sketches that all killed. Were their efforts enough to make this a memorable show? On to the scorecard!

Weekend Receipts: Green Hornet Packs A Medium Sting At Number One; The Dilemma Dies On The Vine

Welcome to the doldrums of January, a cinematic graveyard where, traditionally, studios unceremoniously dump off their DOA films with little fanfare and even fewer expectations. But this year was going to be different; with marquee names like Vince Vaughn, Ron Howard, Seth Rogen and Michel Gondry, the box office could match the talent on display? So, was it? Ehhh…ish. While The Green Hornet managed to open on just barely the side of “okay,” The Dilemma self-destructed at a weak number two. There’s always January 2012 guys!

Friday Box Office: Green Hornet Has Sallow Opening Night, Dilemma Self-Destructs

On the weekend of the Golden Globes, a couple of prize turkeys were trotted out at the box office to little effect. Seth Rogen’s long-delayed Green Hornet opened at a weak number one, while Vince Vaughn’s Dilemma barely made a splash at number two. But hey, The King’s Speech opened wide at number four and did okay! Your Friday box office is here.

9 More Directors Who Should Shoot Their Next Film on an iPhone

News recently broke that acclaimed Old Boy director Park Chan-Wook shot his new thirty minute horror film on an iPhone. The film, Paranmanjang , had a $130,000 budget and will be released in nine cinemas nationwide. Yep, welcome to 2011! Sure, Chan-Wook is a solid filmmaker and it may be interesting to see how he handles an iPhone movie, but all the same I’d prefer that great filmmakers not get in the habit of shooting movies on cell phones. But since trends seem to operate independent of my opinion, it’s always good to take a look at the silver lining. With that in mind, here are nine major filmmakers who might actually benefit from making their next film on an iPhone.

VIDEO: ‘There is No QUARK on My BEND IT’ in Subtitled Version of True Grit

As we noted , The Coen Brothers’ runaway Western-revenge hit True Grit contains some pretty interesting vocal tics. And yes, by “interesting,” we meant “completely incomprehensible.” Now, some folks at College Humor have added handy subtitles for a few of Jeff Bridges’ grunts and slurs. Or at least, they tried. Watch the video after the jump to learn about Bridges’ “occupied jinx,” his “quark” and his “bend it.” Here’s hoping for a DVD special feature that includes phonetic subtitles for the whole film.

All the Films You Expected to Get Nominated by the Producers Guild Got Nominated

Well, almost all of them. For those keeping score at home, the only film not nominated by the Producers Guild that’s also on the list of Best Picture candidates over at the Movieline Oscar Index was Winter’s Bone ; the beloved indie failed to make the cut, replaced instead by Ben Affleck’s The Town . Otherwise, status quo: The Social Network , The King’s Speech , The Fighter , Black Swan , The Kids Are All Right , Inception , Toy Story 3 , 127 Hours and True Grit all received nominations from the PGA, meaning they’re one step closer to fulfilling their predicted Oscar glory. Natalie Portman Is Pregnant and Engaged to Black Swan Co-Star

Forget No Strings Attached . How will this announcement affect Natalie Portman’s Academy Award campaign? The Black Swan star’s representatives have confirmed that the Best Actress frontrunner is engaged to, and expecting a child with, Swan choreographer Benjamin Millepied. The couple met during production on the Darren Aronofsky film — where Millepied also co-starred as Portman’s on-screen dance partner — and are expecting their child sometime in 2011. Congratulations! My Favorite Movies of 2010

I was hesitant to make a top 10 movie list this year because, really, who cares what I have to say? But then I started thinking, Yeah… who cares what I have to say? Without the title of “movie critic,” I can just choose whatever movies I want — the ones that I truly enjoyed the most — as opposed to movies that I know are technically great or that any film fan should definitely see, but may not be as emotionally pleasing to my Big 12-school-educated mind. I know that a “favorite movie list” from an Internet writer my age is supposed to include Inception and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World , it’s almost blasphemy for it not to, but mine doesn’t.

Weekend Receipts: Merry Focking Christmas

Not even being a cinematic lump of coal could stop Little Fockers from topping the tepid Christmas weekend box office; the threequel was the film of choice for people trying to get away from their families. Meanwhile, Jeff Bridges owned the second and third slots on the charts, proving that he’s the new Johnny Depp. (If only!) Pour yourself that final glass of eggnog and click ahead for some weekend receipts.
