Happy 66th Birthday, Helen Mirren! What’s Her Finest Onscreen Moment?

On July 26, 1945, Helen Lydia Mironoff was born in a London hospital to parents Vasiliy and Kathleen Mironoff (or Mironov depending on the spelling). During the 1950s, Vasily changed the family last name to “Mirren,” and for his young daughter, the rest is history. From her breakout role in Michael Powell’s Age of Consent to her Oscar-winning turn as Queen Elizabeth in The Queen , Mirren has been one of Hollywood’s greatest — and seemingly ageless — actresses for five decades. As Liz Lemon once said in reaction to one of Mirren’s famous bikini pics, “Is she a wizard?”

David Cronenberg’s Scanners Coming to a TV Set Near You

This just in from Deadline: Dimension Films, who has the rights to David Cronenberg’s 1981 telepath sci-fi horror pic Scanners , is adapting the genre film not into further sequels or remakes but into a television series. French horror director Alexandre Aja ( High Tension , The Hills Have Eyes , Piranha 3D ) will exec produce the drama and may direct the pilot. [ Deadline ]

Producer Avi Arad on Avengers, Ghost in the Shell vs. Akira, and the Mass Effect Movie

Marvel Studios founder (and former toy inventor ) Avi Arad has built an empire out of the superhero business, having produced everything from the Blade films to the X-Men , Fantastic Four , Ghost Rider , Hulk , Iron Man , and Spider-Man films and the upcoming Andrew Garfield-starring reboot, not to mention the 2012 superhero superfilm The Avengers . Needless to say, there was a ton to discuss and not nearly enough time when Movieline caught up with Arad at Comic-Con right before Sony’s Hall H panel for The Amazing Spider-Man .

[UPDATE] Report: Spider-Man Star Arrested at Comic-Con

Speaking of The Lizard making a splash at Comic-Con , The Wrap reports that Amazing Spider-Man star Rhys Ifans was arrested and charged with misdemeanor battery in San Diego. Ifans, who portrays Dr. Curt Conners a/k/a The Lizard, was on hand among cast and filmmakers yesterday to debut footage in Hall H; apparently, the incident occurred when Ifans “shov[ed] a female security guard” and “insulted” the U.S. prior to the panel.

There’s a reason you don’t know much about Prometheus , the Ridley Scott sci-fi project that was originally conceived as a prequel to Alien : the director doesn’t want you assuming anything about the movie before sitting down in theaters next June. Even so, Fox began promoting the 2012 blockbuster at yesterday’s Comic-Con with a press conference and panel featuring Scott, screenwriter Damon Lindelof and stars Charlize Theron and Noomi Rapace.
