Dead on Arrival: The 5 New Shows Surest to Be Canceled First

Now that over 1 trillion pilots have been picked up for the fall season, it’s time for us to jump back from the onslaught, find our bearings, and realize we have a choice in this monstrous free-for-all too. While some pilots star bankable talents like Jimmy Smits and Matthew Perry and others are created by the Svengalis behind Grey’s Anatomy and Two and a Half Men , the rest seem more doomed than a six-hour episode of Romantically Challenged . Here they are, the five pilots already flying on fumes.

Bret Easton Ellis on Less Than Zero, Its Adaptation, and Its Sequel Imperial Bedrooms

Bret Easton Ellis has written six books, and all six have been optioned by Hollywood. Of those six, four were made into movies, and they run the gamut from iconic to underseen, acclaimed to lambasted. Each day this week, Ellis will tackle a different adaptation of his books for Movieline, giving his take on what worked, what didn’t, and what went on behind the scenes. As a property, Less Than Zero heralded the arrival of two major talents: Bret Easton Ellis, the young author who had written the novel while in college, and Robert Downey Jr., who co-starred in the 1987 film adaptation as the wily junkie Julian. Still, while the Marek Kanievska-directed movie had style to burn and gorgeous production design (by Barbara Ling) and cinematography (by Ed Lachman), it softened and moralized Ellis’s sex-drugs-and-violence tale by considerable amounts.

Celebrity Apprentice Recap: Is Bret Michaels Going to Win This Thing?

I didn’t want or expect three eliminations on Celebrity Apprentice last night, but that’s just what we got, isn’t it? Right down the line, Maria Kanellis, Curtis Stone, and Sharon Osbourne took the elevator ride to hell. Trump calmly explained that they didn’t sell out their coworkers enough. Of course. But more importantly: Only Holly Robinson Peete and Bret Michaels are left. Huh? This isn’t the Sharon Osbourne-Curtis Stone finale we banked on following Summer Sanders’ elimination . Could Bret, the man who joyfully gave us the catchphrase “Pump up the wiener,” really win it all?

NBC Reveals New Fall Schedule, Makes Implicit Apology for The Jay Leno Show

THR has details on NBC’ s new fall schedule, and from the looks of things, it seems like Mary Poppins is helping NBC entertainment chairman Jeff Gaspin program the network: There’s a place for everything and everything in its place. “This new schedule brings NBC back to basics with its commitment to quality scripted programming, ” said Gaspin, totally not all thinking about the Leno Debacle. Rather than be in the slow, trainwreck business, NBC is putting itself in the packaged, theme-night business, and they’ve moved around a couple of your favorite shows in the process.

Rockford Files Reboot Abandoned: Have TV Remakes Ever Worked?

Ever since NBC announced the Rockford Files remake, you wanted to snap, “Stop trying to make The Rockford Files happen, NBC. It’s not going to happen.” And now it isn’t: Deadline reports that the Dermot Mulroney-toplined reboot is kaput . Even USA, a better fit for such a quirky procedural, passed on Rockford . Conventional wisdom suggests we live in a sad generation of entertainment awash with remakes, but you’d think at least one retread would’ve been good (or successful) enough to warrant this mimeographed mania. Truth is, the idea of a working remake may be the most contrived of all.
