2010 VMAs Nab MTV’s Biggest Ratings Since 2002

Awards show was the third-most-watched telecast on MTV ever. By Kelley L. Carter Chelsea Handler onstage during the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards scored the biggest audience for any MTV telecast since 2002. The VMAs grabbed 11.4 million viewers and is the #1 cable telecast of 2010 for the network, followed by MTV’s hit reality series “Jersey Shore,” and the third-most-watched telecast on MTV ever. There were plenty of must-watch moments at this year’s awards show, and the buzz building days before the show about surprise performers likely contributed to the sizable turnout. This year’s show saw much-anticipated performances by Taylor Swift (who debuted a new song addressing last year’s controversy with Kanye West) and West himself, who also debuted a new song that seemed to address his fall from pop-culture grace. The show also featured performances by rappers Eminem, Drake and Best New Artist winner Justin Bieber. Newcomer Nicki Minaj and Black Eyed Peas mastermind Will.I.Am performed together at the VMA pre-show. Host Chelsea Handler opened up the show with a skit that featured Lindsay Lohan . In the pre-taped clip, the comedienne makes her way to the stage (and gets slapped on the butt a couple of times along the way). She meets up with the troubled actress, who pokes fun at her own struggles with sobriety before giving Handler a bit of advice: “Don’t embarrass me.” “Every year, MTV celebrates the music and creative genius of artists we have the privilege of working with all year long,” said Van Toffler, president of the MTV Networks Music & Logo Group. “Last night’s luminescent VMA setting provided the perfect backdrop to do just that and we’re thrilled the audience resoundingly agreed.” Share your VMA reviews in the comments! Justin Bieber Activity Drives Three Percent Of Twitter Traffic

‘Racks of servers are dedicated to him,’ says Dustin Curtis, designer who works for Twitter. By Gil Kaufman Justin Bieber Photo: George Pimentel/ WireImage There are any number of ways to measure just how deeply Justin Bieber has impacted American society: from platinum record sales to sold-out shows packed with screaming fans to the popularity of the singer’s signature brush-down bowl haircut. But on Tuesday, a designer at Twitter put Bieb’s influence in a thoroughly modern context. “At any moment, Justin Bieber uses 3 percent of our infrastructure. Racks of servers are dedicated to him,” tweeted Dustin Curtis, a designer who works at the micro-blogging service. That tidbit should come as no surprise, since Bieber — slated to perform at Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards — has more than 5 million followers and is an almost daily trending topic on the 140-character-limit service. He also noted that there are three things that reliably drive traffic at Twitter: “(a) bashing airlines, (b) bashing Comic Sans, (c) Justin Bieber.” Tech blog Gizmodo reported that Curtis confirmed his tweet was no joke and that he got that information directly from another Twitter employee. The blog noted that even though Bieber is often a trending topic, given the fact that Twitter has 180 million unique visitors a month, his 3 percent land grab is still pretty impressive. Curtis later tweeted that “most of the popular users on Twitter have dedicated servers for their accounts,” which The Hollywood Reporter took to mean that stars such as Ashton Kutcher, Britney Spears and Kim Kardashian, each with more than four million followers, likely have their own racks as well. The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday. Related Artists Justin Bieber

‘Eclipse’ Will Be Re-Released On Friday To Celebrate Bella’s Birthday

‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’ will hit theaters again on September 10. By Jocelyn Vena Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in “Eclipse” Photo: Summit Didn’t get a chance to see “Eclipse” in theaters the first time around? No problem! The movie will be re-released this Friday (September 10). Summit is releasing the flick to the cinemas again in honor of Bella’s birthday, which is on September 13. “Bella Swan’s birthday is on September 13! What are you doing to celebrate?” a message on “The Twilight Saga” official Facebook page reads. “In celebration of Bella’s birthday, ECLIPSE will be re-released in theatres nationwide this Friday! It’s your last chance to see it on the big screen with your friends.” The film, the third installment in the “Twilight Saga,” was originally released last June. It follows the love triangle between Bella, Edward and Jacob as they fend off a group of vampires, led by Victoria, who would like to see Bella out of the picture. In addition to fending off evil vamps, Bella must decide if she wants to stay human and possibly be in a relationship with werewolf Jacob or turn vampire in order to be with her true love, Edward, a choice that Jacob hopes she doesn’t make. “The love triangle is real,” Stewart said of the power struggle back in June, just as the film was hitting theaters. “In [ ‘Eclipse’ ], she is just older and a little bit more [wise]. Now you really believe her. It took a while for her to know herself well enough to make a decision.” After the “Twilight” actors wrap up other projects they are working on, they will head back to the set to film the last two movies in the series, “Breaking Dawn” parts one and two , expected for release in 2011 and 2012 respectively. “Dreamgirls” director Bill Condon will helm the final film adaptations of Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling books. ‘Breaking Dawn’ Casts Rami Malek As Benjamin

‘I’m thrilled,’ the ‘Pacific’ actor says of joining high-profile series. By Kara Warner Rami Malek Photo: Mark Sullivan/ WireImage Just when it seemed like things were all quiet on the “Twilight” front — save for a few updates from actress Nikki Reed and screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg — “Entertainment Tonight” reports that “Pacific” star Rami Malek will be joining the “Breaking Dawn” cast as Egyptian vampire Benjamin. “I think it’s going to be great,” he told “ET.” “It’s going to be super exciting, and I’m thrilled.” In addition to “The Pacific,” Malek has appeared in various films and TV shows, most recently in the “Night at the Museum” movies as Ahkmenrah. He is also in Tom Hanks’ upcoming film “Larry Crowne.” So who is Benjamin? Fans of the books will remember him as a member of the Egyptian coven who, upon receiving word from Carlisle, comes to help Bella and the Cullens battle the Volturi. Benjamin is a young vamp blessed with the special ability of controlling the elements (

‘Breaking Dawn’ Brazil Shoot Possibly Hampered By Local Violence

‘We are continuing to scout locations within the country,’ a Summit rep says. By Mawuse Ziegbe “Twilight” stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner Photo: John Gress/ Getty Images Plans to shoot scenes from the second half of “Breaking Dawn” — the final installment in the “Twilight” series — in Brazil may have hit a snag as a result of violence in the country. According to Agence France-Presse, Summit Entertainment, the production company behind the hit vampire series, planned to begin shooting in Rio de Janeiro within the next few weeks. However, due to a situation in which gang members held 35 guests hostage in the city’s Intercontinental Hotel, and a subsequent shoot-out that left one person dead, the future of the film’s production in Rio has reportedly been jeopardized. RioFilme, a Brazilian film investment agency, said that Summit was discussing the issue with government officials. In a statement to RadarOnline.com , Summit insisted that no decision about abandoning production in the South American nation has been made. “The possibility of filming portions of ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn’ in Brazil has always been under consideration and we are continuing to scout locations within the country,” the company said. However, according to a RioFilme executive, if the smash film series touches down in the country, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart may not head to Brazil until the fall. “If part of the filming of ‘Dawn’ comes rolling in Rio, will be in November/December. OK?” CEO Sergio Sa Leitao said in a message re-tweeted by the agency’s Twitter account. “And nothing more can be said until we close.” Summit announced in June that “Breaking Dawn” would be divided into two parts. The first of the two films is scheduled to hit theaters on November 18, 2011. Nikki Reed Looks Forward To ‘Family’ Reunion For ‘Breaking Dawn’

‘We love each other a lot, and I think we’re sad this is coming to an end,’ she tells MTV News of her ‘Twilight’ castmates. By Kara Warner Nikki Reed Photo: MTV News With “Breaking Dawn” set to start filming sometime this fall, it’s only a matter of time until the “Twilight Saga” wraps up for good. So when Nikki Reed stopped by MTV News recently to talk about her upcoming indie film “Last Day of Summer,” we had to ask the actress what she’s looking forward to most when production begins on “Dawn,” the series’ two-part finale. “Just seeing everyone again,” she said. “We’ve been making these [movies] for a couple of years now, and this year seems to have gone by really fast.” Aside from the press campaigns surrounding “Eclipse,” Reed said she and her co-stars haven’t seen each other as frequently as in recent years, given their suddenly in-demand status. “We’ve all gone off and had other jobs,” she explained, adding that it is very different from a couple of years ago after the first film was released. “I found after the first ‘Twilight’ movie, we were all sitting around L.A., going ‘Hey, aren’t we supposed to work a lot? Isn’t this supposed to open doors?’ We’ve spent a lot of time together [in the past], and in this past year, I haven’t really seen anybody.” Reed said she’s most excited to be reunited with her “family” again. “Just going back to being with the family, because we love each other a lot, and I think we’re sad this is coming to an end,” she said. Rosalie’s ‘Breaking Dawn’ Motives Are ‘Personal’ Not ‘Pro-Life,’ Nikki Reed Says

‘It’s about her want, her need to be a mother,’ she tells MTV News of her character’s fight to save the baby over Bella. By Kara Warner Nikki Reed Photo: James Lacsina As “Twilight” fans well know, there are several slightly controversial and uncomfortable scenes in “Breaking Dawn,” the final book of Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling series. Going into the last two films, the big questions on fans’ minds seem to revolve around the infamous birthing and imprinting scenes. One key participant in the birthing scene is Rosalie Cullen, who becomes so obsessed with Bella having Edward’s baby that she will stop at nothing to see her born — even if it means compromising Bella’s life. When Rosalie herself, Nikki Reed, stopped by to talk with MTV News about her upcoming indie film “Last Day of Summer,” we asked what she thinks about her character’s firm beliefs on that subject matter and how she’ll tackle those difficult scenes in the films. “Here’s how I look at it: I try not to be super opinionated and vocal, because in Hollywood, that seems to only lead you in the wrong direction,” Reed said. “I try to relate this particular case to Rosalie and not make it metaphorical or symbolic of anything else.” Reed said Rosalie’s strong feelings toward the baby are tied to her prior life as a human and never having had the chance to be a mother herself. “I think that Rosalie just always wanted to be a mom, and that’s how I look at it,” she said. “It has nothing to do with being pro-life or anything. I think it’s about her want, her need to be a mother, and this is the only opportunity she’s ever going to have, so she’s willing to let Bella die so she can have that and fulfill that, and that’s how I look at it. It’s her own personal desires.” “Dawn” screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg also weighed in on the infamous scene recently, telling us she plans to write it so everyone feels the pain of the experience. “I want to see the terror of the experience,” Rosenberg said. “I want to have the experience of the fear and feel her pain. I want to feel everyone’s pain in this.” What do you think motivates Rosalie to fight for Bella’s baby? Let us know in the comments. Is Scott Pilgrim vs. the World the Same Movie as Twilight?

Sure, both Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and The Twilight Saga are page-to-screen adaptations with ardent fanbases, but the boys in Scott Pilgrim’s corner wouldn’t be caught dead seeing a Twilight movie of their own volition. The irony? Underneath Scott Pilgrim’s geeky exterior and Twilight’s swoony romance novel trappings, they may actually be the same movie.
