Hate It Or Love It?–Oprah Set To Bring Tyler Perry Over To OWN For ‘Exclusive Partnership’

Please O…none of us want another Perry Produced/Written sitcom. Is it just us or is this a bad move for her and the OWN Network? We’ve got to hand it to Oprah…her network was falling so far in ratings many of us were wondering if OWN would still be on air right now. But with shows like Super Soul Sunday, Oprah’s Lifeclass, Iyanla, Fix My Life, and her Next Chapter interviews, the network was has bounced back and reported numbers in the double-digits this past quarter. So what’s her next step? She’s bringing scripted programming to the network and she’s turned to Tyler Perry…(kill us now). OWN sent out a press release recently and they’ve confirmed that the network has entered into a partnership with Perry, who is set to produce ‘scripted’ material for the channel: Los Angeles, CA – OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network announced today an exclusive partnership with Tyler Perry, the award winning actor, director, screenwriter, playwright and producer, to become his singular destination for all new television series and projects, including two new scripted series for the network to premiere in mid 2013. These will be the first original scripted series for OWN and Perry will executive produce, write and direct both series. The announcement comes as OWN’s momentum and ability to draw new viewers continues to grow. The network closed its third consecutive quarter of year-over-year, double-digit ratings gains across primetime and total day in the key women 25-54 demo (+63% and +70% respectively) and saw triple-digit ratings growth in September. Perry’s popular television series “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne” “Meet The Browns” and “For Better Or Worse” have been massive hits with record-breaking ratings. Perry had his first foray into television in 2007 with the hit series “House of Payne,” which premiered as cable’s biggest comedy debut ever. The series remained basic cable’s top-rated sitcom only until the premiere of Perry’s second series “Meet The Browns.” “I have been looking forward to the day when we would be in the position to enter the world of scripted television. That day has come,” said Oprah Winfrey, CEO, OWN. “We are all energized by the opportunity to collaborate with Tyler who has a proven track record for producing highly successful cable series. He has an incredible ability to illuminate life stories and characters in his unique voice and inspires and encourages people all over the world.” “It’s a dream realized to partner with Oprah and bring scripted programming to OWN,” stated Perry. “She has accomplished so much with the network and I’m excited to work with her to be a part of its continued growth.” “Bringing Tyler Perry exclusively to OWN is a major coup. Today’s announcement demonstrates the power of the Oprah brand to attract some of the biggest names in television and film to OWN,” said David Zaslav, president and CEO of Discovery Communications. “OWN’s growth over the past nine months has been nothing short of phenomenal and, with the continued support of our advertising and affiliate Partners, this bold move into scripted entertainment positions OWN to continue that momentum going forward.” What do you think about this collab? Is Oprah trying to reach out to the black community via Perry? And will he step outside of the box and not give us show(s) like House of Payne, Meet the Browns, and For Better or Worse? We Don’t Need No Water: Tyler Perry’s Atlanta Studio Catches Fire For The Second Time This Year!

What type of bad karma Tyler got comin’ back for him?? Tyler Perry’s Atlanta Studio Catches Fire For Second Time This Year Atlanta firefighters were on the scene of a fire late Monday morning at Tyler Perry Studios. The fire is the second blaze in recent months at the studios on Continental Colony Parkway in southeast Atlanta. Fire officials have not released information on Monday’s blaze, but police dispatchers reported that the roof of a building at the complex was on fire. The fire was apparently in a three-story, 100 by 200-foot building. Video from the Channel 2 Action News helicopter showed about two dozen firefighters on the roof of the building, but no smoke showing at 11:30 a.m. In early May, the exterior of a building in the 30-acre complex was heavily damaged be fire. The interior of that building sustained some water damage. It was not immediately known whether the building on fire Monday was the same building that caught fire on May 1. The 200,000-square-foot studio, which opened in 2008, is home to sets, sound stages and a 400-seat theater. In March, Perry hosted a fundraiser for President Barack Obama at the studio. It’s going to be interesting to hear how the firefighters explain how this fire started. Two fires in just a few months? Sounds suspect to us… Image via John Spink/AJC Source Continue reading

Let’s All Wish Tyler Perry a Happy 20th Anniversary in Showbiz!

“Why did I put all my money into this? Is this going to work? God, do you hear me? Where are the people? I’m so scared. How will I pay these people? Why did I do this? I can’t pay my rent, they are going to repossess my car. The year was 1992, July 8th-12th. All these questions were crowding my mind. I was a 22-year old wannabe… but what I wanted to be I didn’t know.” Relax, Tyler Perry — you’ve spoken to Movieline ! You’ve made it! All downhill from here. [ TylerPerry.com ]

RoboCop Remake Gets Fan Service Out of the Way Early in Viral Video

Paul Verhoeven and Ed Neumeier’s dystopian action-adventure flick RoboCop (which I was too young to realize was a satire upon release) rolled off the assembly line before viral videos had been invented. Just imagine if these. . .marginally clever distractions had existed back in 1987. Heck, I’m sure we’d all be offering bids on lots in Delta City “for a dollar!” The forthcoming remake of RoboCop (here you can take a pause to sigh, wonder why you are surprised that there’s a RoboCop remake coming, then continue on) launched its fake corporate site recently, hawking the wares from Omni Corp. Omni Corp – called Omni Consumer Products in the original – is the privatized company contracted with cleaning up the streets of Detroit using whatever bloody, brutal means necessary. RoboCop’s most famous scene is the presentation of the robot ED-209 in the OCP board room, wherein a computer glitch makes swiss cheese out of a poor schnook named Mr. Kinney. The producers of the new RoboCop , who’d’ve had nerds with pitchforks at the studio gate if ED-209 wasn’t in the pic, have included a version in the new continuity and are wisely revealing him now so we won’t have to sit and wonder when it will happen during the film. (Oh, if only Rise of the Planet of the Apes had thought of this before Draco Malfoy nearly gaffed-up the film with is “madhouse” and “damned dirty” line readings.) The design of the new ED-209 looks like a sleeker, pointier version of the original – like ED Senior mated with a Lamborghini. The video itself is on par with what we have come to expect from fanboy movies’ viral vids, but only teases what RoboCop himself will look like. All said, whoever came up with the line “we’ve got the future under control” definitely earned their pay that day. Previously: New RoboCop Joel Kinnaman discussed the “gritty” reboot with Movieline . Get Your Life Together: Tyler Perry Says President Barack Obama Helped Stop His Drinking Problem Before Madea Had To Go To Rehab

Presidential intervention Tyler Perry has admitted he became heavily dependent on alcohol when his mother died four months ago and struggled to kick his horrible habit. The director spoke candidly to Essence magazine about how he used drink to ease the pain until a visit from President Barack Obama helped him face up to his problem. “I’m doing a lot better now since I stopped drinking about four months ago when my mother died,” Tyler told the magazine. “When she got sick in 2009 I started drinking every night because I couldn’t sleep — every night up to a couple of months ago. I never had a problem but I certainly was on way to having one.” “I’d have me a nice big glass of Hennessy and I would sleep through the night. It was President Obama’s visit to my studio, I don’t know what happened there, but when he came everything became clear.” “I just kind of came out of a haze. It was like, ‘Wake up, kid. You know life is still going on. I know you miss her, I know you care but wake up. Life is still going on.’” “I swear the day after he left was the day I just said I am going to sleep without it.” Must be nice to have the POTUS help you kick your alcohol addiction. Friends in high places indeed. Source

Weekend Receipts: Ted and Magic Mike Both Hits with Audiences

Audiences headed out to theaters to see a foul-mouthed Teddy Bear and some hot man flesh over the weekend. Universal’s Ted grossed over $54.1 million over the Friday through Sunday, while Warner Bros.’ Magic Mike came in at just over $39.15 million. The two studio newcomers topped the overall box office for the weekend, while last week’s newcomer animation Brave held the third spot. Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection landed in fourth place. 1. Ted
 Gross: $54,107,495 (New)
S creens: 3,239 (PSA: $16,705)
Week: 1 Thunder Buddies turned out in solid numbers to see Ted in figures that beat expectations. World of mouth lent the title some push for the Seth MacFarlane-directed film starring Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis. In 2004, Ocean’s Twelve opened with $39,153,380. And with a production budget that was only $7 million, the title is assured a nice showing for its efforts. Opening numbers with Channing Tatum in the cast include The Vow ($41.2 million in February) and 21 Jump Street ($36.3 million in March). 3. Brave (3-D animation)

Diary Of A Mad Black Man: Tyler Perry Says Diana Ross Has Been Ignoring Him For Years

Tyler Perry Snubbed By Diana Ross No love for Madea? Soul legend Diana Ross wants no part in Tyler Perry ‘s plans to help her big screen comeback and has been ignoring his phone calls “for years”, according to the movie mogul. Perry revealed earlier this year that he had written a film especially for the Motown icon in a bid to put her back on the big screen 40 years after she won critical acclaim and an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Billie Holiday in 1972′s Lady Sings the Blues. He said, “I have the perfect role for her… It’s a jazz movie set in the 1940s, and (Ross) would play a jazz singer who runs a juke joint (music venue), and I just wish she would do it.” Perry has reached out to Ross to bring the screenplay to life, but he admits the former Supremes diva has been snubbing his pleas. The star tells lifestyle website Essence.com, “She’s been ignoring me for years. She’s the only person that I have dreamed of working with that will not return my phone calls.” He got the chance to meet his idol once before and the filmmaker pounced on the opportunity to coax Ross into considering the project – only to be completely shut out. Perry says, “That was it, she never called me again. She said, ‘No!’ And that was it.” DAYUM! Divas dont’t shuck and jive for Madea apparently. The boss has starred in such classics as Mahogany and Lady Sings the Blues — we probably wouldn’t return his call either. Source
