Scientists Are Warning the Serengeti National Park (World’s Last Great Wildlife Sanctuary) Is On the Road to Ruin

Scientists: Serengeti on road to ruin http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/africa/09/21/serengeti.migration.threat.road/index… Photo: Conservationists say a proposed new road through the Serengeti National Park will disrupt migratory patterns of wildebeests Serengeti on road to ruin, scientists warn By Matthew Knight for CNN September 21, 2010 11:07 a.m. EDT London, England (CNN) — Plans to build a highway through Tanzania's Serengeti National Park will destroy one of the world's last great wildlife sanctuaries, a group of conservation experts has warned. Writing in the journal Nature, 27 scientists have called for a re-think on a proposed 50 kilometer (31 mile) road which they say will cause “environmental disaster.” Under plans approved by the Tanzanian government earlier this year, the trade route would bisect a northern part of the park, forming part of the 170 kilometer-long Arusha-Musoma highway slated to run from the Tanzanian coast to Lake Victoria, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Construction is expected to begin in 2012. In “Road will ruin Serengeti,” lead author Andrew Dobson, professor at the department of ecology and evolutionary biology at Princeton University, says laying a track across the park would disrupt the annual migratory patterns of tens of thousands of zebras and gazelles, and 1.3 million wildebeest. Using computer simulations the scientists estimate that if the wildebeests' access to the Mara river in Kenya is blocked their numbers “will fall to less than 300,000.” The ecosystem could flip into being a source of atmospheric CO2 –Scientists writing in 'Nature' “This would lead to more grass fires, which would further diminish the quality of grazing by volatizing minerals, and the ecosystem could flip into being a source of atmospheric CO2,” the scientists said. In addition to simulations, the scientists also cite the experience of other park ecosystems where large mammal migration has been hindered by roads and fences. In Canada's Banff National Park in Canada, “habitat fragmentation” has led to the “collapse of at least six of the last 24 terrestrial migratory species left in the world.” In Africa, the ecosystems of Etosha National Park in Namibia and Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in Botswana have collapsed to “a less diverse and less productive state,” the scientists said. Scientists say a different route running south of the Serengeti should be considered to preserve the 1.2 million hectare UNESCO World Heritage Site. This alternative route could utilize an existing network of gravel roads and would only be 50 kilometers longer than the proposed northern route, the scientists said. While they acknowledge that Tanzania needs improved infrastructure to facilitate economic development, they argue that the road would damage wildlife tourism — “a cornerstone” of the country's economy which was worth an estimated $824 million in 2005. The Nature article adds weight to the growing pressure on the Tanzanian government to reconsider its position regarding the road. Last month, the Wildlife Conservation Society and the Zoological Society of London voiced their concerns and campaigns against the highway are gaining support on social networking sites Facebook (“Stop the Serengeti Highway”) and Twitter (“SaveSerengeti”). Earlier this year, Tanzania's President Jakaya Kikwete tried to placate opponents of the project by announcing that the section of new road running through the Serengeti would not be tarmacked. “I am also a conservation ally and I assure you I'm not going to allow something that will ruin the ecosystem to be built,” President Kikwete said in an address to the nation in July. added by: EthicalVegan

Car Smoking ‘Child Abuse’, Leading General Practioner Warns

Parents who smoke in cars in front of small children are “committing a form of child abuse”, a leading GP has said. Professor Steve Field, chairman of the Royal College of General Practitioners, has condemned society's attitudes to food, alcohol and cigarettes. In a letter to the Observer newspaper, he said parents had to take more responsibility for their children's health – and set a good example. He said irresponsible behaviour led to high levels of disease and early death. He called on parents, mothers-to-be, the obese, smokers and drinkers to turn into healthy role models for their children. Professor Field, who represents 42,000 GPs across the UK, added: “I suppose the same people also smoke at home in front of their children. Evidence from the US indicates that more young children are killed by parental smoking than by all other unintentional injuries combined.” Other health experts have previously called for smoking to be banned in cars when children are present, but the government's recent decision not to review existing smoking legislation means that move is unlikely. In his letter, Professor Field says adults need to take responsibility for their own health too. He added: “The truth, which may be unpalatable to some, is that too many of us, too often, neglect too many aspects of our own personal health behaviour, and this is leading to increasing levels of ill-health and early death. “Public health is a sensitive subject. “It's not easy to strike the right balance between protecting people's sensibilities and delivering the hard facts about their personal behaviours that are ultimately shortening their lives. “Too many people do not face up to the hard facts, as they perceive them to be an attack aimed, in particular, at the poorer members of our society, when it is impossible to argue on medical or ethical grounds, that such behaviour is acceptable.” And he said they should ensure they were “healthy role models” so that children learnt to eat well, exercise and look after their own health. added by: Omnomynous

Uganda Anti-Gay Bill Stalls In Committee

The anti-gay legislation investigated in Vanguard's “Missionaries of Hate” is stalled in committee and, according to local gay activists in the country, unlikely to pass during this current parliamentary session. Correspondent Mariana van Zeller said she was taken aback by the fervor surrounding the anti-gay movement, especially at one of Pastor Ssempa’s inflammatory church rallies. “One of the shocking experiences that we had [in Uganda] was being in this congregation, with children, old women, and there he was with his laptop, showing these very graphic images of gay porn,” Mariana said. [Watch more commentary with Mariana.] “You could see the faces of the congregation. They were completely shocked. And this is what they are taking home with them.” Although religious leaders and politicians had managed to elevate the discourse to fever pitch earlier this year, local activists report that the general population of Uganda is more tolerant, and the government seems to be responding to international pressures that the bill be withdrawn from parliament. From the Global Post: “Politicians find that homosexuals are a great scapegoat or red herring to divert attention to more pressing issues … such as unemployment, corruption, poor health facilities, reform of electoral laws and so forth,” wrote Ugandan lawyer Sylvia Tamale, the first female dean of law at Makerere University law school. “If we are to be absolutely honest with ourselves, we should ask whether there are not more pressing issues of moral violation in other areas such as domestic violence, torture and corruption. None of these areas have specific laws outlawing their practice,” wrote Tamale. Rev. Mark Kiyimba of the Ugandan Unitarian Universalist Church, also known as “Pastor Brown,” is a leader in Uganda’s LGBT community. He says that international pressure, especially from the Obama administration, has “cooled down progress on the bill.” “We have shifted our focus and are now concentrating on HIV, spirituality and social issues,” said Kiyimba. “We don’t hear anything anymore about the bill. Besides, parliament will dissolve next month, so it is too late to debate the bill before the close of parliament.” Watch a clip from “Missionaries of Hate” in which Mariana and a
