Bad Movies We Love: The Main Event

Since Warrior and Tom Hardy are planning to beat us up this weekend, I figured we’d counter their attack by revisiting the least gripping boxing movie of all time: The Main Event (a.k.a. “A Glove Story”). If flaxen, dimpled, Dancing with the Stars candidate Ryan O’N eal is your idea of a prizefighter and Barbra Streisand is your idea of his grimy promoter, then The Main Event is the pugilist saga for you. Otherwise? It’s a terrifying medley of boner jokes and Barbra costuming. Ready to watch the stars of What’s Up, Doc? threaten to pummel each other in front of a screaming crowd? Ding-ding!

Josh Hartnett on the Samurai Western Mash-Up Bunraku and Life Outside of Hollywood

It’s no coincidence that Josh Hartnett has been off the grid, so to speak, in the years following his most recent string of mainstream turns ( The Black Dahlia, Resurrecting the Champ, 30 Days of Night ); after spending a decade in Hollywood, the 33-year-old tells Movieline, other interests and challenges called. “I’ve been trying out a lot of different things,” Hartnett explained during a chat about his latest art film endeavor, Guy Moshe’s hyper-stylized Bunraku . “I started this business so young, I kind of grew up in it… I’m just living a rather unique life, I think, and I enjoy it.”

Steve Jobs Steps Down As CEO Of Apple, Too Sick To Serve As Mac Chief…Will Remain As Chairman

Silicon Valley legend Steve Jobs, who has been on medical leave for an undisclosed condition since Jan. 17, resigned as chief executive of Apple Wednesday, saying he could “no longer meet my duties and expectations.” Interim CEO Tim Cook was immediately elevated to CEO, while Jobs, 55, will stay on as chairman of the board. “Steve’s extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world’s most innovative and valuable technology company,” said Art Levinson, Chairman of Genentech, on behalf of Apple’s Board. “Steve has made countless contributions to Apple’s success, and he has attracted and inspired Apple’s immensely creative employees and world class executive team. In his new role as Chairman of the Board, Steve will continue to serve Apple with his unique insights, creativity and inspiration.” Cook has spent 13 years at Apple and had been COO and interim CEO while Jobs was on medical leave. Here is Jobs’ letter to the Apple board of directors: To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community: I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come. I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee. As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple. I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role. I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you. Source

Denise Richards Opens Up About Charlie Sheen, NYC Hotel Disaster

Denise Richards will never cut off contact with Charlie Sheen. Why, many might ask? Considering she’s actually increased security in light of recent threats by the actor? Simple, Richards tells Us Weekly : “He’s my girls’ dad. As they’re older, they’ll deal with him how they can.” In her new memoir, Richards finally goes into detail about the infamous October 2010 night where Sheen allegedly attacked Capri Anderson and was escorted to the hospital by police. The actor’s ex-wife was present at a meal that kicked off that evening, but says she didn’t leave simply because porn stars were there: “It’s not my place to judge how they make a paycheck,” she writes in the aforementioned book, adding: “Charlie was put into an ambulance, and I rode with the sergeant to the hospital, though I insisted I had to be back at 4:30 a.m.After making sure Charlie was stable and settled, the nice policeman gave me a ride back.” For more sterling prose and revealing insight, pick up “Real Girl Next Door” now!

David Hasselhoff, Girlfriend Hayley Roberts Argue; Security Called

David Hasselhoff got into a blow-out argument with his girlfriend last night, and hotel security had to intervene – right before his 59th birthday party. Hasselhoff and Hayley Roberts were at the Wynn in Vegas to celebrate his birthday. Friends were throwing the bash for him at Blush, inside the hotel. Earlier in the evening, however, Hasselhoff’s girlfriend made a call to security and one source says she appeared to have been in some sort of distress . Security came, and for a while there was some question as to whether David would make it to his own party, but as seen above, he did indeed show. Everyone then calmed down, no arrests were made and no charges were pressed against Roberts or the former America’s Got Talent judge. Happy birthday, The Hoff. [Photo: WENN.com]

Vanilla Ice Predicts Flame-Out of Justin Bieber

Vanilla Ice (real name Robert Van Winkle) is a man who has been to the top of the music world, only to become a national joke 15 minutes later. His message to Justin Bieber: You’re next! Ice is warning the Bieb to enjoy his success while he can because his fame will be fleeting, and sustaining this kind of success is impossible. From one doomed pop-cultural fad to another? Vanilla, who produced the first hip-hop single to top the Billboard charts, tells the Huffington Post , “I mean, I did ‘Ice Ice Baby’ when I was 16.” “So, yeah, I can kind of relate a bit. Sold over 100 million records. I had a weekend that lasted about three years, and I didn’t know who I was.” “What’s my purpose in life? So my prediction about Bieber is that he’s going to go through one of those weekends that lasts a few years.” “He’s had such success as a child act. But soon something else new will come along and he’ll be forgotten,” Ice laments, adding, “he can try to put all the pieces back together, so it’s going to be entertaining to watch.” As is his custom, Ice is a bit confused about his own biography for one. “Ice Ice Baby” became a hit in 1990, when he was 23 years old. Secondly, Vanilla Ice is the epitome of a flash in the pan, a one-hit wonder, a gimmick with no real substance. Is Justin Bieber the same? We suspect his 11 million Twitter fans think not.

Amy Winehouse Cause of Death: "Unexplained"

Amy Winehouse’s cause of death is, as of this moment anyway, still being classified as “unexplained” by Scotland Yard. The singer died Saturday at 27. Police issued a statement saying, “At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained and there have been no arrests in connection with the incident.” Ever since officials pronounced Amy Winehouse dead , they have been “operating under the suspicion” it was a drug overdose that led to her demise. However, there is no concrete proof of that … yet. Scotland Yard said yesterday that, “Police were called by London Ambulance Service to a house in Camden Square NW1 shortly before 16.05 hours on Saturday 23 July, following reports of a woman found deceased.” However, a TMZ report suggests that when paramedics arrived, there were still “signs of life,” although Amy died before she could be transported. There is no information on who alerted the police.
