Rima Fakih Crowned Miss USA!

Rima Fakih of Dearborn, Mich., surprised many by winning the Miss USA 2010 pageant at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip Sunday. She strutted in an orange and gold bikini, wore a strapless white gown that resembled a wedding dress and said health insurance should cover birth control. How’d she feel about winning the title ? “Ask me after I’ve had a pizza.” The Queens, N.Y. native of Lebanese descent told pageant organizers her family celebrates both Muslim and Christian faiths. She moved to Michigan in 2003. Rima Fakih is believed to be the first Muslim-American Miss USA and the second Arab-American to be crowned Miss USA since it began way back in 1952. She said she believed she had the title on Sunday after glancing at pageant owner Donald Trump as she awaited the results with the first runner-up. “That’s the same look he gives them when he says, ‘You’re hired’ on The Apprentice ,” she said. “She’s a great girl,” said Trump, who owns the pageant. Miss Oklahoma USA Morgan Elizabeth Woolard was the first runner-up. During the interview portion, which famously derailed Carrie Prejean last year, Fakih was asked if birth control should be paid for by health insurance. Controversial question. She replied yes, saying “I believe that birth control is just like every other medication even though it’s a controlled substance.” After winning, Fakih replaces Miss USA 2009 Kristen Dalton, and will represent the United States this summer in the 2010 Miss Universe pageant. Iran Makes Nuclear Deal and Agrees to Send Uranium to Turkey

Iran agrees to send uranium to Turkey, report says By the CNN Wire Staff May 17, 2010 2:04 a.m. EDT (CNN) — Iran has agreed to ship its low-enriched uranium to Turkey, state media said Monday. Western nations had been asking Iran to send the low-level uranium out of the country to be enriched elsewhere, but the country had resisted until now. On Sunday, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced he was heading to Iran to join nuclear talks in Tehran involving Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The meeting in Tehran sought to reach a breakthrough in the showdown over Iran's nuclear program, according to Erdogan. The last-minute trip followed a “signal” from the talks, which are intended to resolve the dispute over Iran's nuclear energy program, Erdogan told reporters before departing. Erdogan indicated the signal involved Iran's agreement to swap its low-enriched uranium for nuclear fuel, CNN Turk reported. Erdogan said he hoped an agreement in Tehran would stop the U.N. Security Council from its negotiations on tougher sanctions on Iran. “The Security Council was contemplating a step in the direction of sanctions as of yesterday,” Erdogan said. “As a part of our talks, this has been postponed. Now with this step we are going to take, I hope that we will have the opportunity to overcome these problems.” Iran's official Islamic Republic News Agency made no mention of the nuclear issue in reporting earlier that Lula was sitting down with Ahmadinejad. But French President Nicolas Sarkozy and President Dmitry Medvedev of Russia both have said they back Lula's efforts to resolve the long-running, high-stakes stalemate. “This could be the last chance before the U.N. Security Council makes the already known decisions,” Medvedev said, referring to the U.N. decision on imposing sanctions against Iran. Sarkozy said earlier that he had spoken with Lula by phone to assure him that Paris supports his efforts to resolve the impasse. The United States and many other countries believe that Iran intends to develop nuclear weapons. Iran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes. On Saturday, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu left for Tehran to join the Iran-Brazil talks. Erdogan said Sunday the anticipated signal from Iran was received and he was changing his schedule to travel to Tehran, postponing a planned visit to Azerbaijan. Erdogan's statement indicated an agreement in which Iran would send most of its low-enriched uranium to be turned into fuel rods suitable for Turkey's nuclear power reactor that makes medical isotopes. “After our high-level meeting in Tehran, I believe we will have the opportunity to start the process regarding the swap,” Erdogan said. “We said that we will go to Tehran if the swap takes place in Turkey, and we received news that the text includes a reference to this. That's why we are going. Otherwise we wouldn't have gone.” Turkey and Brazil have been working on a joint offer based on the nuclear swap deal offered previously to Tehran. Both countries are temporary members of the U.N. Security Council and have been working toward a diplomatic solution that does not involve sanctions. Lula is in Iran ahead of the Group of 15 developing nations meeting in Tehran. The group actually has 17 members — Algeria, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jamaica, Kenya, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Senegal, Sri Lanka, Venezuela and Zimbabwe. Lula also met separately with Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on his trip, according to Iranian media reports. State-run Press TV reported Khameini emphasized to Lula the need for relations between independent states such as Brazil and Iran in order to reduce the influence of superpowers such as the United States. “The only way to change the oppressive relations in the world today is through the formation of closer ties between independent states,” Khameini said, according to Press TV. “Superpowers have defined vertical relations in the world which places a superpower at the top. These relations must be changed and their change is possible.” PHOTO CAPTION: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva review an honor guard in Tehran. added by: EthicalVegan

2010 Miss USA Title Was Crowned To Miss Michigan

MISS USA title was finally crowned at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino along the Las Vegas Strip. Newly crowned 24-year old Arab-American from Michigan.  Rima Fakih beat out all other 50 beautiful women representing their state for the much coveted crown for this year.  She outshone everyone after she carried herself confidently in an orange and gold bikini then wore a strapless white gown. And during the question-and-answer portion, she wittily answered that health insurance should also cover birth control pills. Fakih is a Lebanese immigrant wherein her family practices both Christian and Muslim religions.  They had moved to United States when she was still a baby.  Fakih was raised in New York, attended a Catholic school.  Then in 2003, she and her family moved to Michigan. It was not stated whether Fakih was the first Arab-American, Muslim, or immigrant to win the Miss USA crown title. Fakih told reporters she sold her car after graduating college in Michigan to help pay for her run in the Miss Michigan USA pageant. She said she believed she had the title on Sunday after glancing at pageant owner Donald Trump as she awaited the results with the first runner-up, Miss Oklahoma USA Morgan Elizabeth Woolard. “That’s the same look that he gives them when he says, ‘You’re hired,’” on Trump’s reality show “The Apprentice,” she said. “She’s a great girl,” said Trump, who owns the pageant with NBC in a joint venture. In a moment that was replayed during the broadcast, Fakih nearly fell while finishing her walk in her gown because of the length of its train. But she made it without a spill and went on to win. “I did it here, I better not do it at Miss Universe,” she said. “Modeling does help, after all.” Fakih replaces Miss USA 2009 Kristen Dalton and won a spot representing the United States this summer in the 2010 Miss Universe pageant. She also gets a one-year lease in a New York apartment with living expenses, an undisclosed salary, and various health, professional and beauty services. During the interview portion, Fakih was asked whether she thought birth control should be paid for by health insurance, and she said she believed it should because it’s costly. “I believe that birth control is just like every other medication even though it’s a controlled substance,” Fakih said. Woolard handled the night’s toughest question, about Arizona’s new immigration law. Woolard said she supports the law, which requires police enforcing another law to verify a person’s immigration status if there’s “reasonable suspicion” that the person is in the country illegally. She said she’s against illegal immigration but is also against racial profiling. “I’m a huge believer in states’ rights. I think that’s what’s so wonderful about America,” Woolard said. “So I think it’s perfectly fine for Arizona to create that law.” “The Office” actor Oscar Nunez was booed as he asked the question and asked the audience to wait until he finished the question before they reacted. The panel of judges came up with the questions themselves. Miss Virginia USA Samantha Evelyn Casey was the second runner-up, Miss Colorado USA Jessica Hartman was third runner-up, and Miss Maine USA Katherine Ashley Whittier was the fourth runner-up. Most of the field of contestants from all 50 states and the District of Columbia were eliminated just after the pageant began and the entire group danced onstage to “TiK ToK” by Ke$ha. A panel of eight judges, including NBA star Carmelo Anthony, Treasure Island casino-hotel owner Phil Ruffin and Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir, were judging the girls throughout the night. After 15 contestants strutted in swimsuits, five were eliminated. Another five were eliminated after the evening gown competition. Miss Nebraska USA Belinda Renee Wright won the Miss Congeniality award, roughly one week after her father was killed in a farm accident. Miss Alabama USA Audrey Moore won Miss Photogenic after an online fan vote. The pageant aired live to East Coast viewers on NBC. The competition, which is not affiliated with the Miss America pageant, was hosted by celebrity chef Curtis Stone and NBC correspondent Natalie Morales. 2010 Miss USA Title Was Crowned To Miss Michigan is a post from: Daily World Buzz Continue reading

It’s Official:Heroes Cancelled by NBC

Some of you will cry, some of you will jump for joy. But nothing will change this fact: Heroes has finally been canceled, says The Hollywood Reporter. You’ve all heard the story before: Heroes burst onto the scene with critical praise and outer-space ratings, but began a sharp decline just before its Season 1 finale that seemed to last forever. Critics say poor writing and acting are what doomed the show, but Heroes simply failed to work after its infancy. Just this morning the Peacock net announced its plans to run with The Cape, their much-talked-about superhero saga—sound familiar much?! It even stars sci-fi sexpot Summer Glau, so bonus points from the get-go. NBC reportedly planned of bringing the cult fave back for a final miniseries-type of sendoff and as a consolation for Heroes fans, but with countless buzzworthy pickups on the schedule next season, Heroes did not stand a chance. Until then, let’s fill up the comments section with fond farewells, harsh good riddances, and “meh”s. It’s Official:Heroes Cancelled by NBC is a post from: Daily World Buzz Continue reading
