Sarah Palin Slams Michelle Obama in Racially Charged Passage From New Book

In passages leaked from her forthcoming book America by Heart, Sarah Palin — the erstwhile quitter governor of Alaska, who now, by all indications, fancies herself as President of the United States — has taken another cheap shot at First Lady Michelle Obama. In a passage on perceptions of racial inequality in the United States, Palin slams President Barack Obama, who, she asserts, “seems to believe” that “America — at least America as it currently exists — is a fundamentally unjust and unequal country.” 2010-11-19-americabyheart392x600.jpg And then she goes after Michelle Obama: Certainly his wife expressed this view when she said during the 2008 campaign that she had never felt proud of her country until her husband started winning elections. In retrospect, I guess this shouldn't surprise us, since both of them spent almost two decades in the pews of the Reverend Jeremiah Wright's church listening to his rants against America and white people. The passage — coming on page 26 in a chapter entitled “We, the People” — echoes remarks made by Palin on the eve of the midterm elections, at a rally in San Jose, California, at which point she mocked remarks made by Michelle Obama during the 2008 campaign: “You know, when I hear people say, or had said during the campaign that they've never been proud of America,” Palin spat out. “Haven't they met anybody in uniform yet? I get tears in my eyes when I see that young man, that young woman, walking through the airport in uniform…you too… so proud to be American.” In fact, Michelle Obama's remarks were made (in Madison, Wisconsin, during the 2008 campaign) in a context of Americans being “unified around some basic common issues”: What we have learned over this year is that hope is making a comeback. It is making a comeback. And let me tell you something–for the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country. And not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change. And I have been desperate to see our country moving in that direction, and just not feeling so alone in my frustration and disappointment. I've seen people who are hungry to be unified around some basic common issues, and it's made me proud. Afterwards, the First Lady further clarified her remarks by noting that she was referencing the “record number” of young voters participating in the political process in the 2008 campaign: For the first time in my lifetime, I am seeing people rolling up their sleeves in way that I haven't seen and really trying to figure this out, and that's the source of pride I was talking about. The passages from Palin's latest book first appeared at Palingates, where several other pages from American by Heart have also been posted. Palin followed up her comments about Michelle Obama by throwing an elbow at U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, also focusing on racial overtones: It also makes sense, then, that the man President Obama made his attorney general, Eric Holder, would call us a “nation of cowards” for failing to come to grips with what he described as the persistence of racism. added by: TimALoftis

Worm Compost Suppresses Plant Diseases

Image credit: Worm Power We all know that composting is a great way to reduce waste , and vermicomposting can be a particularly effective method on the household level . When I wrote about worm composting becoming big business , there was also a lot of interest in the supposed disease suppressing qualities of vermicompost. GOP Congressman Calls for Climate Action (Video)

We’ve entered a political era in the United States that’s distinctly hostile to climate science — a pretty stunning number of the new Congressmen coming to the Hill next year claim that climate change isn’t real , or that it isn’t caused by man. Meanwhile, the scien… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Donald Trump For President? It Could Happen!

Will Donald Trump seriously run for President ? Appearing on Good Morning America today, the mogul, who has toyed with the idea before, was talking about it again this morning – and seriously. His reasoning was simple: “I’m looking at this country, and what’s happened in terms of respect. And the respect for this country is just not there.” TRUMP 2012 : Don’t laugh. The Donald is considering it . “I have many people from China that I do business with, they laugh at us. They feel we’re fools. And almost being led by fools,” Trump continued. But is he the man to change all that? According to Trump, the United States has become a “whipping post” for China to assert its control because of the nations’ trade imbalance and China’s currency manipulation, a problem he claims President Barack Obama has failed to address. That would change under Trump, Trump claims. “When you have billions in dollars in deficits with a country, those are trade wars I like. You don’t have to do business with China. You don’t have to do business with other countries,” The Apprentice creator added, basically firing China. So will he run or not? He can certainly afford it. Trump said if he runs, it’ll be as a Republican and he would be willing to spend at least $200 million of his own money in a campaign. Watch out, Sarah Palin ! “I would take her on,” he says of the Thrilla From Wasilla, although he says it’s foolish to underestimate Bristol’s mama grizzly. “I like her, but I’d take her on.” His decision will be based, he says, on whether America “continues to be taken advantage of by the world.” Basically, subject to change, and interpretation. “Would I rather be in the race or not be in the race? I can tell you, I love what I’m doing. I’m having a great time doing what I do. I’d rather not [run].” Just don’t write him off yet. That ‘d be no fun. What do you think? Should Trump run?

Roger Ailes: NPR Run By ‘Nazis,’ Jon Stewart ‘Crazy’

Fox News chairman Roger Ailes called NPR executives “Nazis” and said Jon Stewart is “crazy” in the second part of his interview with The Daily Beast's Howard Kurtz. (In the first part of the interview, published on Wednesday, Ailes said that Obama's “socialism” was “too far left” for international allies, and that the president has “a different belief system than most Americans.”) Ailes spoke about NPR in the context of defending Juan Williams, who was fired from the public radio network after his comments about Muslims on Fox News. Ailes gave Williams a new, multi-million dollar contract in response to the firing. He told Kurtz that he had done so because he was “mad,” and wanted to look after Williams and his family. But he reserved his greatest anger for NPR executives: “They are, of course, Nazis. They have a kind of Nazi attitude. They are the left wing of Nazism. These guys don't want any other point of view. They don't even feel guilty using tax dollars to spout their propaganda. They are basically Air America with government funding to keep them alive.” Ailes also blasted Jon Stewart, who has made Fox News perhaps his biggest target on “The Daily Show.” “He hates conservative views,” he said. “He hates conservative thoughts. He hates conservative verbiage. He hates conservatives…he's crazy. If it wasn't polarized, he couldn't make a living. He makes a living by attacking conservatives and stirring up a liberal base against it.” added by: TimALoftis

George Soros: Quit Supporting obama

ASHINGTON — At a private meeting on Tuesday afternoon, George Soros, a longtime supporter of progressive causes, voiced blunt criticism of the Obama administration, going so far as to suggest that Democratic donors direct their support somewhere other than the president. The Hungarian-American financier was speaking to a small side gathering of donors who had convened in Washington D.C. for the annual gathering of the Democracy Alliance — a formal community of well-funded, progressive-minded individuals and activists. According to multiple sources with knowledge of his remarks, Soros told those in attendance that he is “used to fighting losing battles but doesn't like to lose without fighting.” “We have just lost this election, we need to draw a line,” he said, according to several Democratic sources. “And if this president can't do what we need, it is time to start looking somewhere else.” Michael Vachon, an adviser to Soros, did not dispute the comment, though he stressed that there was no transcript of a private gathering to check. Vachon also clarified that the longtime progressive giver was not referring to a primary challenge to the president. added by: Ihatethemall

GLOBAL POLITICAL AWAKENING: BREAKING: Senate votes cloture on S 510 – must now be voted on in 60 days

By a vote of 74 to 25, at noon today, the U.S. Senate voted for cloture on S 510, the Food Safety Modernization Act, which means it must now be voted on in the full Senate within 60 days. All amendments to the controversial food control bill must be completed by that time. One of S 510′s supporters, Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, opposed cloture because modifications to the bill do not reflect its original intent, he said on C-SPAN. Chambliss fully supports giving the FDA more power over the US food supply, but is unhappy with the Manager’s Amendment submitted in August. He objects to the small farm exclusion on the grounds that the $500,000 annual gross revenue limit is an arbitrary number that is too quickly reached by small farms. He called for numerous amendments to the bill as it appears today. Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio supports S 510, and called out the statistics by the Centers for Disease Control that report there are 76 million foodborne illnesses a year, with 5,000 resulting in death. What Brown did not say was that the FDA — the very agency further empowered by S 510 — is responsible for the approval of pharmaceutical drugs that results in 100,000 deaths a year. None of the supporters of S 510 will acknowledge the corrupt nature of the Food and Drug Administration. Monsanto executives now work at the FDA or on President’s Obama’s Food Safety Task Force. What legislators continue to ignore from the public is that we do not support giving federal agencies even more power — especially over something as inherently private as food choices. None of the legislators will discuss the FDA raids on natural food operations which sickened no one, while it allowed Wright County Egg to sicken people for decades before finally taking action. Yesterday, Senator Bob Casey informed his Pennsylvania constituents that the$1.6 billion price tag for S 510 will stop food smuggling in the United States. I kid you not: “These provisions add personnel to detect, track and remove smuggled food and call for the development and implementation of strategies to stop food from being smuggled into the United States.” Is food smuggling a problem in the United States? Well, the “biggest food smuggling case in the history of the U.S.” busted wide open in September. Eleven Chinese and German executives were indicted for bringing in $40 million worth of commercial grade honey over a five year period, reportedly to avoid paying $80 million in import fees. (No wonder they tried smuggling.) That amounts to 3 percent of the 1.35 billion-dollar honey market over a five-year period. Since that was the biggest food smuggling bust, food smuggling is not the problem. Clearly. It hardly seems worth it for the US taxpayer to cough up $1.6 billion so the FDA can stop such illegal activities, especially in our current economic recession. Blogger Steve Green interprets the S 510 smuggling language to mean: “It would allow the government, under Maritime Law, to define the introduction of any food into commerce (even direct sales between individuals) as smuggling into “the United States.” Since under that law, the US is a corporate entity and not a location, “entry of food into the US” covers food produced anywhere within the land mass of this country and “entering into” it by virtue of being produced.”

Nuclear Waste Piling Up Across US: 138 Million Pounds and Counting

Photo: Topato , Flickr, CC … And nowhere to put it. What happens to all that radioactive waste created by nuclear power plants? Not much. In 1982, Congress mandated the construction of a national nuclear waste repository. It’s been nearly 30 years since then, of course, and there’s no such repository. Planned for Yucca Mountain, Nevada, it was scuttled by the Obama administration due to NIMBY issues — and there’s

The Race to Save Haiti’s 50 Endangered Frog Species From Extinction

Photo credit: Claudio Contreras/iLCP The devastation and tragedy that has beset Haiti seems to have to limit. Deforestation, mudslides, hurricanes, and the earthquake earlier this year have destroyed what few resources remained there and left the people with no choice but to rebuild their lives from the rubble. And though the human victims are, understandably, the focus of relief efforts, they are not the only casualties of the recent string of events. Haiti’s wildlife hangs on the brink of extinction and, with little to no endemic habitat remaining, have no hope for survival on the island. Fortu… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Where That Green $32 Billion Went: Recovery Act Update

Photo: US Army, CC It was the first big move made by the Obama administration, and yet the stimulus bill remains controversial and largely misunderstood. There’s little disagreement among economists that the Recovery Act spared the US from slipping into a full-bore depression, or that it created or saved millions of jobs. And yet, according to polls, most Americans feel that it did little to help the country, or themselves in particular — questions about ‘where all that money went’ are commonplace. So let’s take a look. Remember, bi… Read the full story on TreeHugger
