Black Woman Venture Capitalist Aims To Revive Underserved Areas In D.C.

View post:

A Black venture capitalist is using her business acumen and resources to revitalize underserved areas in Washington, D.C. Through her company EB5 Capital, Angelique Brunner is intertwining community restoration, job creation and citizenship for foreign investors, Fast Company reported. This black female entrepreneur is rebuilding D.C. with foreign dollars—and a dream https://t.co/wl8wUU96Iw — Fast Company (@FastCompany) September 29, 2018 Brunner moved to the nation’s capital nearly 20 years ago and discovered neighborhoods that were in dire need of help, the news outlet writes. Many of the predominately Black communities that had been ravaged by the 1968 riots following the death of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. were left with abandoned buildings and nearly no businesses for decades. Determined to evoke change in these neighborhoods, Brunner launched EB5 Capital. The company gives investors from other countries the opportunity to put money towards rebuilding D.C. neighborhoods in exchange for green-cards and a smoother journey to U.S. citizenship. Brunner—who was once the only Black woman in the venture capital world from the New York City to Atlanta area—believes the program is beneficial for all parties involved. “People are willing to invest in the United States for an expedited visa process. The only hitch is that you have to create jobs with the money they invest,” she told the news outlet. “We are focused on job creation, but livable cities require jobs and affordable housing. You can actually have financial gains in a neighborhood that don’t necessarily change the racial fabric of a neighborhood initially. To me, the only way to address the addition of economic opportunity is to consciously create mixed-income neighborhoods.” EB5 Capital has worked on projects that include the City Market at O Street and the city’s Columbia Place development. There have been several efforts to rebuild underserved communities throughout the country. In August, it was reported that former NBA star and business mogul Earvin “Magic” Johnson has his sights set on revitalizing neighborhoods in Baltimore . Al Matthews Dies: Actor Famous for "Aliens" Role Was 75

Actor Al Matthews, best known for his memorable role in the film  Aliens , has died. The iconic actor had retired to Spain, which is where he passed away. He was 75. 75-year-old Al Matthews passed away at his home, according to Spanish newspaper El Pais . Matthews’ home was located in Orihuela Costa, in the Spanish Mediterranean province of Alicante. He had retired to Spain in 2005. Responders found Matthews when a neighbor called emergency services. An autopsy is expected for the late actor. Matthews is, of course, best known for his role as Gunnery Sergeant Apone in James Cameron’s 1986 classic, Aliens . In the science fiction film, he starred alongside living legend Sigourney Weaver. He delivered a truly famous line. “Alright sweethearts, what are you waiting for, breakfast in bed? A day in the Marine Corps is like a day on the farm,” he said on screen. The quote continues: “Every meal’s a banquet! Every paycheck a fortune! Every formation a parade! I love the corps!” That may have been Matthews’ most famous role, but was far from the only one. In fact, he appeared in over 30 films. Matthews portrayed a fire chief in Superman III . He played General Tudor in the cult classic The Fifth Element . He also enjoyed success in the United Kingdom, where he had a role on the UK series, Grange Hill . And speaking of his work across the pond, in 1975, his song, “Fool,” reached #16 on the UK Singles chart. Despite his retirement, Matthews reprised his legendary role as Sgt. Apone in the 2013 video game,  Aliens: Colonial Marines . Perhaps part of what made Matthews’ role in Aliens so iconic and powerful — aside from his acting skills — was that he had been a real life marine in Vietnam. “I spent six years in the United States Marine Corps;” Matthews shared on his personal website. “I hold thirteen combat awards and decorations, including two purple hearts.” He reveals: “I was the first black Marine in the 1st Marine Division in Vietnam to be meritoriously promoted to the rank of sergeant.” That is one hell of an achievement. His website blurb concludes: “I served with Kilo Battery, Fourth Battalion, 11th Marines, 1st Marine Division, of that I am very proud.” Rest in peace, Al Matthews. This Ain’t It Chief: Texas State Education Board Votes To Remove Hillary Clinton From History Classes

Splash Hillary Clinton may not be the most liked person in the world , but she made history as the first woman to run for President of the United States and we shouldn’t let that go unnoticed. Unfortunately for students it Texas, Mrs. Clinton’s historic feat will be disregarded after the state’s decision earlier this week to remove Hillary Clinton and Hellen Keller from history lessons. Newsweek reports: The vote comes as the board makes efforts to “streamline” the social studies curriculum in the state, The Dallas Morning News reported. The preliminary vote by the 15 member board group created a rubric to decide which historical figures were “essential to learn about and who wasn’t.” But for some odd reason, the same curriculum deems it mandatory for students to learn about Bill Clinton ‘s impeachment. Thoughts?

She Said She Gon’ Do What To Who?: A Playlist Of All The Times Cardi B Was Bout That Life

Source: Sean Zanni / Getty Cardi B has been making “beat that chick up” music since the beginning of her career so it should be no surprise that she is completely about that action. Over the weekend, Cardi B made her New York Fashion Week debut by attending the Harper’s Bazaar ‘ICONS’ event at The Plaza Hotel. She was dressed in a beautiful red ball gown, stunning jewelry and her hair pulled back into an elegant ponytail. Who would have known that she was dressed to beat the brakes off of somebody? On this night, Cardi B was not the only raptress in attendance. Nicki Minaj, who behind the scenes is her arch nemesis, was also at the Harper’s Bazaar soiree. It’s unclear how it all got started, who started it or why, but Cardi B ended up almost getting into a physical altercation with Nicki Minaj. From various videos that were posted, Cardi attempted to get at Nicki as best she could but the Barb was protected by security. There are rumors that Nicki’s friend, Rah Ali of Love and Hip Hop New York, defended her and actually got physical with Cardi. However, there aren’t any photos or videos to really support that theory. What we do know is that Cardi B took off her shoe and flung it at Nicki when Nicki refused to back away from the corner and fight her one on one. According to Cardi, the fight has been brewing for months. Cardi took to Instagram to share her side of what happened. “I’ve let a lot of shit slide! I let you sneak diss me, I let you lie on me,  I let you attempt to stop my bags, fuck up the way I eat! You’ve threaten other artists in the industry, told them if they work with me you’ll stop fuckin with them!! I let you talk big shit about me! I addressed you once in person, I addressed you a second time in person, and every time you copped the plea!! But when you mention my child, you choose to like comments about me as a mother, make comments about my abilities to take care of daughter, is when all bets are fuckin off!! I’ve worked too hard and come too fuckin far to let anybody fuck with my success!! Bitches talk all that shit in they raps but in real life pussy! This shit really is for entertainment!!” Regardless of which side of the beef you fall on, there’s no denying that Cardi B walks it like she talks it. To celebrate her being real about hers, here’s a playlist of songs where Cardi B tells us she’s about that action!   Cardi B – Bodak Yellow “Now she says she gon’ do what to who? / Let’s find out and see / Cardi B, you know where I’m at / You know where I be”   Cardi B – Foreva “Ran down on that bitch twice / Ran down on that bitch twice / You know me I be with whatever / If a bitch beef with me we gon’ beef foreva”   Cardi B – “Pull Up” “Hella fake, you better pull up on me / I hope you feel the same when you see my face, you better pull up on me / Ain’t no backin’ down, prepared to shake, you better pull up on me / Now you wanna be my friend, no, you ain’t safe, you better pull up, homie”   Cardi B – “Pop Off” “Who wanna pop off? / Who wanna start war? / You talkin’ shit? / I’m takin’ tops off / Jeans, off / Weaves, off / Rings, off / Everythin’, off”     Cardi B – “Get Up 10” “Just ’cause I been on the road don’t mean I been on the run / And you gon’ have to learn to hold your tongue or hold the gun  / And we all know you ain’t that type  / I smack you and the bitch that you act like”   G-Eazy ft. Everything We Know About Olympic Champion Michael Johnson Suffering A Stroke

O lympic gold medal sprinter Michael Johnson announced Saturday that he’s recovering after recently suffering a mini-stroke. SEE ALSO:  Here’s How Colin Kaepernick Is Beating The NFL Johnson “surprisingly” had what’s known as a Transient Ischemic Attack, or TIA, last week, he said in a Twitter post . The retired athlete is now at home with his family after doctors cleared him of cardiac issues. He’s expected to make a full recovery, as Johnson continues to make significant progress. “It seems these things can affect anyone, even the once fastest man in the world!” he stated. “I’m no stranger to a good exercise plan and have thrown myself into it with my usual focus and determination. … I will be posting updates on my recovery often. Thanks for all the words of encouragement!” Michael Johnson: Four-time Olympic champion recovering after 'mini-stroke' https://t.co/OcqE5LGS8k — BBC News (UK) (@BBCNews) September 8, 2018 A TIA is a temporary blockage of blood flow to the brain, according to the American Stroke Association . TIAs are often labelled mini-strokes because they can be relatively minor in terms of immediate consequences. Since it doesn’t cause permanent damage, having a TIA is often ignored as no big deal, the stroke association said. However, it’s better viewed as a “warning stroke” because they could indicate a high likelihood of a more serious stroke. The four-time Olympic champion, who will turn 51 on Sept. 13, was once the fastest man in the world at 200 meter and 400-meter races, reported BBC News , where he works as an expert track and field commentator. Johnson participated in the Olympics three times, in 1992, 1996 and 2000. He was the first man to win both the 200 meter and 400-meter race at the same Olympic game (1996 in Atlanta). He’s also won eight gold medals at the IAAF World Championships from 1991- 1999 and was elected into the United States Track and Field Hall of Fame in 2004. Donald Trump Tries to Dunk on LeBron James, Calls Him Stupid

Donald Trump is too short, too out of shape and possesses hands that are way to small to dunk a basketball. But the President of the United States nevertheless took some time out of his late Friday night to try and slam one home on… … LeBron James? Yes. The very stable genius, who thinks one needs an ID to purchase groceries , jumped on Twitter around midnight and Tweeted the following about the new Los Angeles Lakers star : Lebron James was just interviewed by the dumbest man on television, Don Lemon. He made Lebron look smart, which isn’t easy to do. I like Mike! There are many things to point out about this Tweet. For starters, Lemon interviewed LeBron on Monday night, meaning there are only one of two options here: Trump used TiVo to record the interview and watched it days later. Trump was simply watching CNN, the network he often claims “sucks” and is terrible and is full of “fake news,” when it re-aired the Q&A. Either would be a totally normal thing for the Commander-in-Chief to do, right? Secondly, LeBron James was interviewed by Lemon (along with other outlets) because he just opened a public school in Akron, Ohio. To reiterate: James donated millions and millions of dollars to the I Promise school, an institution for at-risk children in his hometown that will offer: – Free college tuition to the University of Arkon for all graduates. – All students a free uniform, free bicycle and free helmet. – Job assistance and GED training for the parents of all students. – A food pantry for families. – Free breakfast, lunch and snacks for all students. One could easily argue this is the most generous and impressive off-court gesture ever made by a professiona athlete. And THIS is the individual that President Trump has chosen to insult as unintelligent. We wonder why. Yes, James has referred to Trump as a “bum” on Twitter in the past and he also said in June that whichever team won the NBA title would turn down an invitation to visit the White House. But head NBA coaches Steve Kerr and Greg Popovich has been far more critical of Trump. The latter said in March that Trump is a liar and a hypocrite and that he brings out the “dark side of human beings for his own purpose.” Yet Trump has never uttered a negative word about Kerr or Popovich. We really do wonder why. What makes LeBron different from these two other men in his profession. Can anyone out there help explain it to us? In his CNN interview, James discussed the impact of sports and how it brings people together, contrasting this experience with the way Trump uses “sports to kinda divide us.” A great example of this would be Trump’s constant bashing of NFL players for being unpatrotic because they are protesting violence against African-Americans by taking a knee during the national anthem. “Sports has never been something that divides people,” James told Lemon. “It’s always been something that brings someone together.” A few months ago, LeBron expounded further on Trump’s self-centered and misguided attitude toward… everything and everyone. “He doesn’t understand the power that he has for being the leader of this beautiful country,” James said. “He doesn’t understand how many kids, no matter the race, look up to the president of the United States for guidance, for leadership, for words of encouragement. “He doesn’t understand that, and that’s what makes me more sick than anything, that we have someone that’s … this is the most, this is the No. 1 position in the world.” In his viral Tweet above, Trump said he likes Mike, very likely making a reference to Michael Jordan in the debate for who is the best basketball player of all-time. The world now waits to see if Jordan will chime in with his opinion of the President. It also now waits to see if Trump will get impeached for being a traitor.

Last Of A Dying Breed: This Is The Only Blockbuster Left!

Continued here:

Source: Patrick Wymore / Getty For millennials who remember how dominant Blockbuster was in the 1990’s, it’s hard to believe that there’s only on store left standing in the streaming era. It’s even more amazing when you remember that 18 years ago, Blockbuster had the chance to buy Netflix (the competitor that most agree put them out of business) for just $50 million. Today, Netflix is reportedly worth $32.9 billion and is available in 40 countries. All you can do is shake your head and salute the folks holding it down at the Bend, Oregon chain. Jimmy Fallon Roasts Donald Trump Mercilessly After Twitter Feud

After Jimmy Fallon tried to walk back some of his 2016 friendliness towards Donald Trump, the POTUS let him have it on Twitter.  Specifically, Trump demanded that Jimmy Fallon “man up” and not apologize for humanizing Trump during a critical election year. Fallon responded by donating to a group working to help immigrants. He also went after Trump in a monologue. Watch! So, Jimmy Fallon expressed regrets for that shameful incident in which he had Donald Trump on as a guest during the 2016 election. At the time, Fallon ruffled Trump's hair as if Trump were just some eccentric reality star and not a clear and present danger to American ideals and freedoms. Trump saw Fallon's regrets and, as he is want to do, flipped out on Twitter. So Jimmy Fallon responded in his monologue. “Before we begin,” Fallon tells his audience. “I just wanna give a shout out to our show’s number one fan — the President of the United States!” Picking up on his intention, the audience applauds — something that you're not likely to hear Trump elicit outside of one of his infamous rallies. Jimmy sets the stage. “As you may have heard last night,” Fallon says, explaining the premise. “The President of the United States went after me on Twitter.” “So Melania, if you're watching, I don't think your anti-bullying campaign is working.” Melania's proposed bullying campaign has been a source of many jokes, even before she shared that it was called “Be Best.” It seems that Melania doesn't really care . “When I saw that Trump insulted me on Twitter,” Fallon explains. “I was gonna tweet back immediately, but I thought, 'I have more important things to do.'” That line, of course, is just a set-up for his punchline. “Then I thought, 'Wait, shouldn't he have more important things to do?!'” Fallon exclaims. “He's the president! What are you doing? Why are you tweeting at me?” Many have lamented that Trump spends so much time on Twitter. But that pales beside his record-breaking time spent golfing. “Crazy,” Fallon says. “The President went after me on Twitter. It's pretty much the only thing I have in common with NFL players.” Trump has, of course, been famously critical of football players who kneel in protest of rampant anti-black violence. “In response,” Fallon says, reiterating what he had already tweeted. “I made a donation in Trump's name to the Refugee And Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services.” RAICES is an organization that many see as the perfect counter to Trump's preference of placing refugees, asylum seekers, and others who cross the border in internment camps. “Or RAICES,” Fallon says, leading up to his next joke. “When Trump heard that, he was like: 'I love RAICES, they're my favorite peanutbutter cup.'” Fallon then proceeds to deliver some mild burns to Trump. “A new poll found that 58 percent of Americans think President Trump is intelligent,” Fallon cites. Sorry if that statistic crushes the final vestiges of anyone's lingering faith in humanity or the American public. Fallon jokes: “In response, Trump was like, 'Ok, what did the other 58 percent say?'” Fallon then moves on to poking fun at Trump's lack of geopolitical savvy. “And today at the White House, Trump met with the King and Queen of Jordan,” Fallon says. “Which got awkward when Trump thanked the King of Jordan for giving us Michael.” That line refers to Michael Jordan, a famous baseball player. Fallon then went on to make quips about Sarah Huckabee Sanders getting asked to leave a restaurant and then about Trump's angry Twitter response that better resembled a Yelp review. Is Jimmy Fallon especially funny? Not in this monologue. (You can enjoy the monologue because of its politics without finding it to be a laugh riot) Should he be forgiven for his hair-ruffling humanization of Donald Trump during such a critical election year? Probably not, but history will be the judge. But it is definitely not appropriate for the President of the United States to use his position to attack comedians. Or restaurants. Or political rivals. Or, you know, people with brown skin. Considering that Trump locked up a couple thousand kids in cages and called for Samantha Bee to be fired , his attack on Fallon was relatively mild. Good for Fallon for using the opportunity to donate to a good cause, though. He deserves credit for that.
