Obama to Nasa: No Space For You!

read it. instead of science and exploration, obama wants to focus on commercial space flight. sweet, something to make the super rich richer, and robbing us of scientific exploration. oh and it'd lose 70,000-100,000 jobs. great job again obama WASHINGTON, March 10 – U.S. President Barack Obama is trying to tamp down an uprising in politically vital Florida against a new strategy for NASA that has rankled space veterans and lawmakers and sparked fears of job losses. Obama's decision to kill NASA's Constellation program to launch astronauts into orbit and return Americans to the moon has prompted soul-searching on whether the United States is prepared to cede a pre-eminent space role to Russia and China. “As with all great human achievements, our commitment to space must be renewed and encouraged or we will surely be surpassed by other nations who are presently challenging our leadership in space,” Democratic and Republican members of the U.S. Congress from Florida wrote to Obama last week. Obama's move for a greater private sector role in space launches — as he seeks to keep ballooning federal deficits in check — has generated fears of job losses among thousands of NASA employees who provide an important economic base in Florida, a state usually crucial in presidential elections. Employees at major space complexes in Alabama and Texas are also worried. It is making for a potentially explosive environment when Obama travels to the Cape Canaveral area on April 15 to host a space conference with top officials and leaders in the field. “What reception will they get? Not good,” said Keith Cowing, editor of nasawatch.com, a website that closely monitors the U.S. space agency. “It's a gutsy move. It's Daniel in the Lion's Den.” Obama, in his Feb. 1 budget proposal, planned to increase NASA's overall funding to $19 billion in 2011 with an emphasis on science and less spent on space exploration. He would cancel the Constellation program's Orion spacecraft and Ares rockets, after $9 billion and five years of tests. Constellation is aimed at returning astronauts to the moon in the 2020s to clear the way for a Mars mission. Instead, Obama would spend $6 billion a year for five years to support commercial spacecraft development and pursue new technologies to explore the solar system in what the White House called “a more effective and affordable way.” LARGER ISSUE Various members of the far-flung U.S. space community have been troubled by the change, such as former NASA administrator Michael Griffin, who struggled to get more funding for Constellation from the previous administration of President George W. Bush and believes Obama should stick with it. “There's a larger issue here,” Griffin said. “Does the United States want to have a real space program? Do we actually think we can have a robust, exciting, world-leading space program by hiring private enterprise to furnish it?” But John Logsdon, former director of the Space Policy Institute at George Washington University, said he believed it was time for the private sector to get more involved in space. “There's no reason to think that the technical talent in the private sector, combined with a significant degree of NASA engagement, cannot come up with a good solution,” he said. The debate to some extent has riven the space community. Buzz Aldrin, the second man on the moon, supports the change in direction while Harrison Schmitt, one of the last on the lunar surface, opposes it. NASA already has contracts with Space Exploration Technologies and Orbital Sciences Corp to deliver cargo to the International Space Station. SpaceX and other firms are developing spaceships that can carry passengers to orbit and back. The shuttle system still has four more flights to get crews and hardware to the International Space Station before the craft are retired. After that, NASA will be without a heavy-lift capability for a period of time. This means Americans would have to pay to ride on Russian rockets to get into orbit, a stark turn of events after the pivotal battle the United States and the Soviet Union fought to outdo each other in the space race. To maintain a lift capability, Florida Democratic Senator Bill Nelson wants the administration to add one shuttle flight and develop the Ares rockets that are part of the Constellation program. Ultimately, Nelson believes Obama needs to give the United States a goal for its space program and hopes it will be a mission to Mars. Grayson introduces Public Option Act – Medicare for anyone

Congressman Alan Grayson, (D-Orlando), today introduced a bill (H.R. 4789) which would give the option to buy into Medicare to every citizen of the United States. The “Public Option Act,” also known as the “Medicare You Can Buy Into Act,” would open up the Medicare network to anyone who can pay for it. Congressman Grayson said, “Obviously, America wants and needs more competition in health coverage, and a public option offers that. But it’s just as important that we offer people not just another choice, but another kind of choice. A lot of people don’t want to be at the mercy of greedy insurance companies that will make money by denying them the care that they need to stay healthy, or to stay alive. We deserve to have a real alternative.” The bill would require the Secretary of Health and Human Services to establish enrollment periods, coverage guidelines, and premiums for the program. Because premiums would be equal to cost, the program would pay for itself. “The government spent billions of dollars creating a Medicare network of providers that is only open to one-eighth of the population. That’s like saying, ‘Only people 65 and over can use federal highways.’ It is a waste of a very valuable resource and it is not fair. This idea is simple, it makes sense, and it deserves an up-or-down vote,” Congressman Grayson said. In keeping with the “Grayson style,” the bill is clear and concise. It is only four pages. Source: Grand Jury to Indict John Edwards

John Edwards is already a walking disgrace, having cheated on his cancer-stricken wife with Rielle Hunter, knocking up his weird mistress, trying to cover the scandal up, and lying about it repeatedly while running for President of the United States. Now a Federal grand jury may decide there was criminal behavior in there, too. The former U.S. Senator may find himself indicted shortly, according to reports, for illegally using campaign funds to hide his affair with Hunter. One-time aide Andrew Young and none other than Edwards’ own estranged wife Elizabeth could help take the fallen presidential candidate, too. Edwards is being investigated by FBI, IRS and election officials for possible campaign violations related to paying hush money to Rielle Hunter . The grand jury has been meeting since April 2009, and an indictment is imminent . FALL FROM GRACE : There’s truly never been one like this . “John is terrified he’s going to be indicted,” a friend said. “While he believes he’s done nothing illegal in trying to hide his affair with Rielle and their daughter, he thinks the Feds are going to make an example out of him.” Right. Make an example of him. Because they do that. Sorry, John, weren’t you a personal injury lawyer at one point? They never make examples out of anything. Tell us, how’s the view look from the other side? Do the crime, do the time, pal. All because you had to go and do Rielle Hunter, too. So worth it right about now.

Orca kills trainer at SeaWorld Orlando

ORLANDO – A SeaWorld trainer was killed Wednesday when an orca pulled her into the water as she was talking to visitors. The same orca, or killer whale, has been tied to two earlier deaths in 1991 and 1999, according to the Humane Society of the United States, which has campaigned to keep marine mammals out of theme parks. Orange County Fire Rescue spokesman John Mulhall said paramedics were called to the Shamu Stadium at the theme park resort where they found a worker who could not be revived. Dubai ‘hit squad’ used fake Israeli names, EU passports

A few weeks ago we asked if Israel assassinated a senior member of Hamas in Dubai. Authorities in Dubai had blamed the death by electrocution of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, a senior military operative of Hamas on assassins who then fled the country. Well this week the plot, it seems, has thickened. Dubai investigators released this video from CCTV cameras they say show the 17 member hit squad. Eleven of the suspects names have been released as well as their passport photos. They were (unsurprisingly) traveling under fake names – the names of Israeli EU passport holders who deny any involvement in the affair. Here are the photos. Israel for its part denies having anything to do with the killing, though no one expects the Mossad to come out and claim responsibility anyway. The best backgrounder on this thus far comes from True/Slant's Neal Ungerleider (love that guy!) who writes: The Israeli intelligence agency certainly has the motives and the means. The modus operandi also fits prior Mossad operations. However, certain facts don’t add up. Mossad agents have had a long presence in the United Arab Emirates, which Israel has long held discrete economic and trade relations with. Presumably, had the Mossad been responsible, agents who had staked out the hotel prior would have been aware of the locations of both public and hidden CCTV cameras. The agents caught on camera, while highly professional, engaged in some odd behavior. The donning of fake beards and glasses in view of security cameras is one. Using the names of Israeli citizens for fake passports is another — what security agency would implicate their own citizens? Additionally, there is always the possibility of a false flag operation — where a foreign intelligence agency killed al-Mabhouh for their own purposes, while making it look like a Mossad killing. But who could possibly want to implicate Israel in an assassination? (I kid.) Who do you think is responsible? Take a wild guess? Sloppy Mossad operatives? False flag flying Iranian Revolutionary Guardsmen? Give us your best Dubai assassination theory in the comments. added by: afitzgerald

Nicole Forrester Accuses Josh Duhamel of Possibly Making Like John Edwards

According to Nicole Forrester, there’s a 95% chance Josh Duhamel is doing a great impression of former Presidential candidate John Edwards. According to THG , of course, there’s 99.99999% chance Nicole Forrester is full of crap. The Georgia-based stripper – who claimed in November that she regretted telling the tabloids about her affair with the actor … yet is now milking the allegation for loads of cash – tells The National Enquirer that she’s with child. “Yes, I’m pregnant. Yes, it’s probably Josh’s. I haven’t decided what I’m going to do,” Forrester told the newspaper this week. How confident is Nicole that Duhamel is the father? 95 percent, she said. The Enquirer is rarely a reliable source, but it did correctly call the Edwards/Rielle Hunter affair. It was also the first to detail Forrester’s supposed night of passion with Fergie’s husband, as she claims they had sex – bad sex , mind you – in a $820/night hotel suite after they met at Atlanta’s all-nude Tattletales Lounge club. The publication says Forrester has passed a polygraph test. Of course, Duhamel must do a lot more than simply deny an affair in order to emulate Edwards. He’s still an aide-assisted, state funds-used cover up and sex tape to go!
