Justin Bieber Rooting For ‘Bridesmaids’ At MTV Movie Awards

Singer shares his fond memories of the Movie Awards, which always have him ‘laughing and having a great time.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kara Warner Justin Bieber Photo: MTV News Justin Bieber ‘s fondness for the MTV Movie Awards dates back to a time way before his 2011 nomination for Best Jaw-Dropping Moment. “My first memory?” he pondered to MTV News. “I remember just watching it from a young age and always laughing and having a great time.” While he didn’t nab any noms this year, he is hoping that “Bridesmaids” walks home with a Golden Popcorn trophy when the 2012 MTV Movie Awards go live this Sunday. “I liked ‘Bridesmaids.’ I need to see ‘Hunger Games’ again. I need to see it because I went there the first night it came out and I feel asleep because it was like super-late. But I need to see it again,” he explained, before breaking down why he loved the raunchy female comedy so much. “I just think it was funny. It’s kind of like the female version of ‘The Hangover,’ ” he said. “I thought it was funny.” Expect more memories to be made and lots of Golden Popcorn statues to be handed out (maybe even to “Bridesmaids”) when the 2012 MTV Movie Awards take place this weekend. By Jocelyn Vena Chris Hemsworth and Kristen Stewart in “Snow White and the Huntsman” Photo: Universal Pictures Kristen Stewart came through with more than juicy scoop about her role in “Snow White and the Huntsman” when she sat down with MTV News on Tuesday night (May 29) as part of Sneak Peek Week : KStew also brought an exclusive clip from the movies, which opens this Friday. In the teaser, Snow White (Stewart) and the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) are seen hanging upside down from a tree after being captured by dwarves. Exclusive: Behind The Scenes Of Stephenie Meyer’s ‘The Host’

MTV News visits the set of the book-to-film adaptation to get the juicy details on the Meyer’s parasitic story. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh HorowitzKara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz On the set of “The Host” Photo: MTV News Hey Stephenie Meyer fans, have we got a treat for you. MTV News got a behind-the-scenes look at Andrew Niccol’s big-screen adaptation of Meyer’s “The Host.” The sci-fi romance is Meyer’s first adult novel, and we were lucky enough to get an exclusive sneak peek when we visited the set last month. “The Host” is the story of Melanie Stryder (played by Saoirse Ronan ), one of the last humans to have avoided capture by an alien race called Souls. The Souls operate more like parasites in that they invade human bodies and erase their personalities. The film follows the unlikely partnership of Melanie and her parasite as they seek out the last of Melanie’s human relatives and her love Jared (Max Irons). For Ronan, whom we witnessed running down corridors and jumping off tall precipices, her dual roles are a lot more physical than she expected, but she has relished the opportunity to flex those new action-type muscles. “I didn’t expect it to be so physical. I’ve been in a harness quite a bit, I’ve done stunts, I jumped off a balcony it was 30 feet in the air,” Ronan revealed with pride. “That was pretty cool.” Speaking to the film’s romance, Irons admitted that he enjoyed the struggle Jared has in wanting to be close to Melanie, but knowing in the back of his mind that he can’t. We watched Ronan and Irons film one of their more emotionally charged scenes that involved Jared trying not to kiss Melanie. “Jared’s struggle is when Melanie returns, she was the love of his life and he lost her, but then she walks back into his life,” Irons explained. “He wants to hold her, but the rational part of his mind is saying she needs to be killed.” From the looks of things on set, this big-screen adaptation has major potential to strike a chord among Meyer’s dedicated fanbase. The author told us that she’s enjoyed her involvement in the production and that being on the cave sets was particularly magical for her. “It was so awesome. The cave set was enormous, it was vast, they’re just so cool, so much fun to walk on,” Meyer enthused. “It was kind of like someone built something out of your imagination just for you.” The also stars Jake Abel, William Hurt and Diane Kruger, and is slated for a March 2013 release. REVIEW: Eva Mendes Brings Warmth — and the Hotcha-Cha Factor — to Girl in Progress

Teenage Ansiedad (Cierra Ramirez) is lacking in role models. Her father’s unknown, her best friend (Raini Rodriguez) is faithful but a little dull, and her mother Grace (Eva Mendes) is a hotcha-cha mess who dates married dudes and behaves less like a mom than a deadbeat roommate. So when her English teacher (Patricia Arquette, vital in a too-brief role) introduces the concept of the coming-of-age narrative, hyper-precocious Ansiedad decides to use it as a kind of emancipation blueprint. Directed by Patricia Riggen ( Under the Same Moon ), Girl In Progress starts out breezy, making wacky archetypes of the overachieving latchkey kid and her appallingly irresponsible mom. Odd-jobbing Grace shrugs about finishing the cereal (and the milk) and forgets about her child’s existence whenever her current philandering squeeze (Matthew Modine) swings into view. Ansiedad resolves to apply her discipline to a teenaged trajectory so clichéd that it’s easily converted into a giant flow chart on her bedroom wall. I got a little ahead of the script (by Hiram Martinez) when Ansiedad has her light bulb moment in English class, thinking perhaps the daughter might use a set of literary conventions to finally midwife her mother into adulthood. Instead the narrative splits off into parallel parts, similar to the way Riggen divided Under the Same Moon between the story of a Mexican woman laboring as a Los Angeles housekeeper and that of her son’s journey from Mexico to find her. Ansiedad begins acting out her acting out, ticking off bullet points (ditch your old friends; infiltrate the cool circle; offer the alpha babe your virginity) like items on a grocery list. Were the conceit a little more genre- or source material-specific — if the picture followed some overarching inspiration the way Clueless played on Emma , say, or if it featured some of the alter-ego goofing of  Youth in Revolt or the self-conscious twistiness of The Cabin in the Woods — the plot’s terms would have been more firmly grounded and we might have been brought closer to Ansiedad’s logic. Ramirez’s bad girl schtick is occasionally amusing (“I’m out of control; catch you later,” she deadpans at one point) but the idea that she would consciously risk becoming her mother just to get away from her never feels convincing. Meanwhile, Grace’s apparently bottomless self-absorption is well played by Mendes, who has always infused her man-candy roles with warmth and a weary intelligence behind her eyes. Both are on display when Grace’s latest relationship implodes after she’s confronted with an indifference to her daughter that equals and maybe even surpasses her own. At this point Girl in Progress  attempts to go deep: The best friend acts out for real and Ansiedad heads for the bus station to earn her runaway badge. Riggen doesn’t find a tonal equilibrium at this new level, though, and everything goes wobbly as Mendes and Ramirez are forced into what feels like a false moment of repentance and reconciliation. Girl in Progress feels a little trapped by its own conceits: It plays with the idea that all rebellion is in some sense performed and makes a caricature out of the immature, attention-hungry mother, but it never liberates its characters from their molds. I wanted to believe that Grace suddenly straightens up and heads to school and Ansiedad finally gets the love and care she deserves, but was left with the feeling that their movie was still a few milestones short of full maturity. Fun. Ready To Burn Bright At MTV Movie Awards

‘It’s an opportunity to have a performance that will be talked about forever,’ band says of taking the Movie Awards stage on June 3. By James Montgomery Nate Ruess of fun. Photo: Getty Images Given that Fun. are the first musical act announced for the 2012 MTV Movie Awards , you’d think they’d be privy to all sorts of insider info on the big show, like potential hosts, nominees, etc. But, you’d be wrong. Turns out, they’re just as much in the dark as the rest of us. “We haven’t heard anything. Who’s going to be there?” frontman Andrew Ruess laughed. “Jackie Chan? Jon Bon Jovi? They better be there, for sure.” Sadly, we can’t vouch for either gentleman’s availability on June 3, when the Movie Awards air live from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California. But we can tell you that the guys in Fun. are planning on making the most of their time on stage, by going big with their performance of chart-topping smash “We Are Young.” “It’s one of the most flattering things that’s happened to us on this rollercoaster ride of this song and this album, because I just remember watching all those award shows — like the Video Music Awards and Movie Awards — and you always wonder like how they’re doing it, what their big reveal is going to be, all those other type of things,” Ruess said. “We’ve had meetings about how our set’s going to be and what it’s going to look like, and it’s so exciting. It’s so exciting how much effort MTV puts into this show, like, we have to show up and play the song, but they build this whole entire world around us, and it’s so amazing.” “It’s also an opportunity to have a performance that will be talked about forever,” guitarist Jack Antonoff added. “Like, I still talk about [the 2000 VMAs], when Eminem had the thousand people dressed like him, or when Smashing Pumpkins did ‘Tonight, Tonight’ [at the ’96 VMAs] … these are moments that, for us, growing up, last forever, and if we could pull off something like that, it would be amazing.” And as if being tapped to perform at the 2012 Movie Awards wasn’t already a big enough deal for the band, there’s also the fact that they’ve got previous MTV awards-show experience … though, to be fair, this will be the first time they’ve actually been invited to attend. “I went to the Video Music Awards when I was 14. My friend from camp had a friend who had a dad who was involved, and we sat near Rebecca Lobo and the Spice Girls,” Antonoff said. “It was the year that Fiona Apple gave the big speech, which, in hindsight, was pretty inspiring. My mind was blown, and I thought ‘This is just filled with famous people, and somehow I’m in the middle of it.’ So, to be able to go back to an MTV awards show — not through a friend of a friend who has a dad who works at Viacom — but to actually be invited, is an honor.” The 21st annual MTV Movie Awards air live Sunday, June 3 at 9 p.m. ET/PT from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California.
