Weirdness of the Early Universe: Could It Be Older Than We Think? (Today’s Most Popular)

Could the Universe be much older than we think? Early on its life it appears that our Universe was a place of puzzling extremes and seeming contradictions. Link : http://www.dailygalaxy.com/my_weblog/2010/11/weirdness-of-the-early-universe-cou… added by: AngelAlina

A Mysterious Force Is Pulling Pioneer 10 Back Toward the Sun

I kind of dig space—especially the unexplained—so today I'm in a bit of a tizzy. Pioneer 10, you see—which left our solar system in 1983—is slowly being drawn back toward the Sun by an unknown force. No, it's not gravity, it's something else. Something mysterious. Something barely perceptible that is tugging at the probe with about 10 million times weaker force than gravity. Potentially a “new force of nature” (their words, not mine). Most of the obvious causes, including malfunction or gravity, have been ruled out, reports the Telegraph: Scientists initially suspected that gas escaping from tiny rocket motors aboard the probes, or heat leaking from their nuclear power plants might be responsible. Both have now been ruled out. The team says no current theories explain why the force stays constant: all the most plausible forces, from gravity to the effect of solar radiation, decrease rapidly with distance. Scientists tracking the distant probe (now some seven billion miles from Earth), say that the probe's speed, presently 27,000mph, is being reduced by the force by about 6mph per century. Not much, but entirely noticeable and worthy enough that scientists like Dr. Duncan Steel, of Salford University, who is speculating this cosmic tug could question whether we know enough about gravity, the universe, and everything. http://gizmodo.com/5642007/a-mysterious-force-is-pulling-pioneer-10-back-toward-… added by: pjacobs51

Linkin Park’s Surprise VMA Location: Story Behind Griffith Park Observatory

Location has been featured in dozens of films, TV shows and music videos, including Adam Lambert’s ‘If I Had You.’ By Kara Warner Linkin Park performs at the 2010 VMAs Photo: MTV It’s fair to say that Linkin Park ‘s VMA performance of their hit “The Catalyst” at the Griffith Park Observatory was pretty epic. Naturally, the band’s killer rock stylings were a major part of the effect, but the historic scenery definitely enhanced the experience. For astute pop culture fanatics out there, if you feel like you’ve seen the picturesque setting before, you have — especially if you’ve seen “Transformers” or Adam Lambert’s music video for “If I Had You.” The Griffith Park Observatory is so named for Col. Griffith J. Griffith, an eccentric and generous early L.A. land baron, who bequeathed the land upon which the landmark now sits to the city of Los Angeles in 1896. The historic site is a popular tourist destination for its science- and space-related exhibits, but also because it has been featured in dozens of films, TV shows and music videos. Old-school classics filmed here include “Rebel Without a Cause,” “Back to the Future,” “Who Framed Roger Rabbit,” “The Rocketeer” and Paula Abdul’s video for “Rush Rush.” More recently, “Transformers,” “Yes Man,” “Funny People,” the TV series “24,” “Beverly Hills 90210,” “The Simpsons” and Lambert’s “If I Had You” have included footage from the historic site. Versions of the GP Observatory are also featured in the video games “Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas,” “Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines” and “Future Cop: LAPD.” In addition to the landmark’s pop culture ties, the Griffith Park Observatory’s planetarium was used to train pilots in celestial navigation during World War II, and again in the ’60s to train Apollo program astronauts for the first lunar missions. The observatory underwent a major renovation from 2002 to 2006 and now features an expanded exhibit space, the Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon Theater and Wolfgang Puck’s Caf

Sixteen Things That it Took Me 50 Years to Learn

1. You will never find anybody who can give you a clear and compelling reason why we observe day-light-savings time. 2. You should never say anything to a woman that even remotely suggests you think she’s pregnant unless you can see an actual baby emerging from her at that moment. 3. The most powerful force in the universe is gossip. 4. The one thing that unites all human beings, regardless of age, gender, religion, economic status or ethnic background, is that, deep down inside we ALL believe that we are above-average drivers. 5. There comes a time when you should stop expecting other people to make a big deal about your birthday. That time is age 111. 7. There is a very fine line between “hobby” and “mental illness.” 8. People who want to share their religious views with you almost never want you to share yours with them. 9. If you had to identify, in one word, the reason why the human race has not achieved, and never will achieve, its full potential, that word would be “meetings.” 10. The main accomplishment of almost all organized protests is to annoy people who are not in them. 11. If there really is a God who created the entire universe with all of its glories, and He decides to deliver a message to humanity, He will NOT use, as His messenger, a person on cable TV with a bad hairstyle. 12. You should not confuse your career with your life. 13. A person who is nice to you, but rude to the waiter, is not a nice person. 14. No matter what happens, somebody will find a way to take it too seriously. 15. When trouble arises and things look bad, there is always one individual who perceives a solution and is willing to take command. Very often, that individual is crazy. Your friends love you, anyway. 16. Nobody cares if you can’t dance well. Just get up and do it. Dave Barry added by: onemalefla

Jimmy Fallon, Betty White Earn Our Alternate Emmys

MTV News picks the truly award-worthy moments — and the massive fails. By Gil Kaufman Jimmy Fallon at the 2010 Emmy Awards Photo: Mathew Imaging/ Getty Images Sunday night’s Emmy Awards were full of unforgettable moments and thrilling first-time wins for the casts and brilliant minds behind “Modern Family,” “Breaking Bad” and “Glee.” But because there’s no Emmy Award for the Emmy broadcast itself, MTV News decided to sprinkle a bit more Hollywood pixie dust on Sunday night’s winners and losers with our own nods to the show highlights. Instant Viral-Video Hit : Host Jimmy Fallon didn’t knock it out of the park, but his opening musical tribute to “Glee,” set to the tune of Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” became an overnight viral hit. Social-Networking Fail : Fallon promised to take the Emmys into the future with some Twitter bits, but his introductions of presenters courtesy of viewer tweets fell flat nearly every time. Best Name That Totally Sounds Like It Was Made Up : Bucky Gunts. We were totally with comedian Ricky Gervais when he said he hoped the director of the opening ceremonies for the Vancouver Olympics with the vaguely porn-y sounding name would win his category. Worst Use of a Prop : Gervais provided many moments of hilarity during his time onstage (go back and listen to the Mel Gibson bit), but perhaps the night’s most awkward moment came after his rant about how, unlike at the Golden Globes, there’s no booze at the Emmys. He rectified that situation by sending waiters out into the audience with a variety of microbrews for the attendees. Things got a bit weird, though, when former “Friends” star Matthew Perry, who has spent time in rehab, had to politely decline a bottle of suds. Think It, But Don’t Say It Award : Definitely goes to three-time Emmy winner Edie Falco for joking after she won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy for her role in “Nurse Betty”: “I’m not funny.” Guess who else doesn’t think you are? All of the other women in the category. Best Unexpected Cameo by the Subject of a TV Movie You’d Never Heard Of : Admit it, you got a bit misty when the spunky inspiration and namesake for “Temple Grandin” stood up during David Strathairn’s acceptance speech and showed off her lady rancher outfit and later took the stage with her Hollywood doppelg

Sandra Bullock Opens Up About Her Son On ‘Today’

‘Everything works out the way the universe wants it to work out,’ she says in an interview airing Tuesday. By Jocelyn Vena Louis and Sandra Bullock on the cover of People Photo: People Sandra Bullock sat down with Matt Lauer for her first television interview since her divorce from Jesse James , airing on the “Today” show on Tuesday. In it, she opens up about her adopted son, Louis, and what he means to the entire Bullock family. “We don’t have any boys in our family. Boy, is everyone really happy about that. So, he’s like the crown prince. You know, it’s nothing but girls in our family,” Bullock said about her baby, whom she called her “little Cajun cookie,” in an excerpt on the show’s Scoop blog . “I mean, my cousin in Germany has one son. No boys — can you imagine how miserable our father is? I mean, every pet was female. But it was just the hierarchy that needed to be broken.” Bullock also talked about how she was able to keep the adoption a secret from the media, crediting the people around her as having “massive amounts of integrity.” “Human beings exist that have integrity, that know how to keep their mouth shut. That know the bigger picture, that don’t sell out their friends,” Bullock explained. “Those people are all over the place. But again, we don’t like to talk about it, because it doesn’t sell a magazine. But I was blessed with the same friends I’ve had since before things got really special for me and blessed in life. “I did not circumvent,” Bullock explained further about the adoption. “I wanted to do everything exactly the same way everyone else did. And it was. He was always mine, you know. It wasn’t like I felt like someone was going to take him away. But it was nice to have someone say, ‘I think you’re a fit parent.’ … I think everything works out the way the universe wants it to work out.” The Oscar-winner sat down with Lauer in New Orleans, where she helped to raise funds for a new health clinic on the campus of the Warren Easton Charter High School. “They did it with such power and love and integrity. Integrity. There’s so much integrity here. And I’ve never been around that much integrity,” Bullock said about the victims of Hurricane Katrina since the area in and around New Orleans was devastated by the natural disaster five years ago.
