New Xbox 360 Includes ESPN, Kinect And ‘Call Of Duty’ Exclusives

‘Halo: Reach’ and ‘Star Wars’ demos debut during this year’s Xbox 360 E3 media briefing. By Brian Warmoth The New Xbox 360 is announced at E3 Monday Photo: Michal Czerwonka/ Getty Images Microsoft grabbed attention at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles this week before the event even began. Their Sunday presentation featuring Cirque du Soleil confirmed Project Natal ‘s official name as Kinect. Then, the global media briefing on Monday (June 14) unveiled Microsoft’s new motion controller’s full range of media capabilities, as well as an Xbox Live partnership with ESPN, an exclusive “Call of Duty” agreement and demos for new games including “Halo: Reach” and an unnamed “Star Wars” title for Kinect, which will launch in the U.S. on November 4. “A decade ago, we unveiled Xbox to the world, and this year, our 10th year, is the biggest year in Xbox history,” Don Mattrick, Microsoft senior vice president of entertainment, proclaimed at the event. “It’s the biggest year for blockbuster games. It’s the year that movies, music, television and sports all come together on Xbox 360.” The Xbox-centered event featured a long list of guest speakers, just as it has in years past. Among this year’s surprises were ESPN hosts Josh Elliott and Trey Wingo. The two “SportsCenter” anchors introduced their network’s new face on Xbox Live, which will include a wide range of programming selections and commands made possible by Kinect. “Sports fans will now have access to over 3,500 live and on-demand events, including college football, college basketball, Major League Baseball, the NBA, soccer and more,” Wingo said. Most of the offerings will be available in HD, according to Wingo and Elliott, who used a segment from last season’s USC/ Ohio State football matchup to showcase Kinect’s voice commands. Elliott proceeded to select his favored team and then call for instant replays on the fly. Similar commands will be used for video viewing through Microsoft’s Zune movie player on the 360. The E3 demo walked its audience through a series of options, including motion and voice actions that paused, played and otherwise replaced traditional push-button controls. Additionally, Microsoft integrated its movie player into a segment about the Video Kinect chat application that allows users to see each other and watch a movie simultaneously. “Whether in the same room or separated by thousands of miles, communication with others is central to who we are as people,” Marc Whitten, Xbox Live corporate vice president, explained. “It’s why we’ve always believed in voice chat and party chat. It’s why we’ve included a headset with many of the Xbox 360s and all of the Live starter packs we’ve sold, and now with Kinect, the same magic that allows you to control your Xbox 360 with your voice also allows you to communicate with the people you care about.” Whitten also announced that Xbox Live would be expanding on Microsoft’s mobile operating system, allowing more access to many of its features. “On Windows Phone 7, your friends, your avatars and your achievements will be with you wherever you go,” Whitten stated. That news came with a new, smaller Xbox 360 reveal later in the program, as well as a list of exclusive Xbox Live agreements. The updated Xbox 360 will be black and ship to retailers this week with a 250GB hard drive, internal wireless Internet capability and a $199 price tag. The lineup of games Microsoft and its partners showed off introduced a handful of the 15 launch titles for Kinect. These included “Kinectimals,” an animal-handling game featuring a pet tiger cub; “Kinect Sports,” a “Wii Sports”-style collection of soccer, bowling, track and field, table tennis, boxing and volleyball competitions; a kart racing game called “Kinect Joy Ride,” which was previously announced without a Kinect association; and “Kinect Adventures,” a competition-based title using outdoor activities such as rafting. Kinect will allow midgame photos to be taken of players while they interact with the motion system. Those shots can then be uploaded to various social-media channels. “Call of Duty: Black Ops” received the biggest non-Kinect-game spotlight, as Mattrick announced “an exclusive multi-year agreement between Xbox and Activision.” “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2” recently saw its map packs get an early release on the 360. According to Mattrick, that will be the standard approach for all “Call of Duty” content in 2010, 2011 and 2012. “Starting with the release of ‘Black Ops’ on November 9, all ‘Call of Duty’ add-ons and map packs will launch first on Xbox 360,” he said. The remainder of the program premiered demos of “Halo: Reach,” “Metal Gear Solid: Rising,” “Gears of War 3,” a new Forza game, Harmonix’s new Kinect-ready “Dance Central” title, Ubisoft’s “Your Shape: Fitness Evolved” and finally an unnamed “Star Wars” game that will involve lightsaber combat using Kinect. The new Xbox consoles will be the first of Microsoft’s announced release to reach the general public this week, though most of the announcements won’t fully test the gaming market until November. Nevertheless, Microsoft made a lot of friends in the audience, closing the event by letting everyone in attendance know that brand-new Xboxes were being shipped to their homes and offices. Don’t miss “World Premiere of Project Natal Experience, Imagined by Cirque du Soleil,” airing Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. ET on MTV!

Katy Perry Wants To Be A ‘Teenage Wet Dream’

Singer says she wants Teenage Dream LP to ‘exude euphoric feeling.’ By Gil Kaufman Katy Perry Photo: MTV News We’ve learned an awful lot about Katy Perry over the past week or so: She doesn’t take kindly to Lady Gaga mucking around with Christian iconography , she wields a mean whipped-cream bra and, according to soon-to-be-hubby Russell Brand, she’s a virtual flatulence factory . One of the things we haven’t heard from the 25-year-old blue-wig-sporting pop diva, until now, is what inspired her to name her upcoming album Teenage Dream. “I want to call it Teenage Dream because there’s a song on the record [called that] and I wrote that song in Santa Barbara and it was a very pure moment for me, because that’s where I’m from,” she told MTV News. “And it was, like, where I started my creative juices. And also it kind of exudes this euphoric feeling because everybody remembers what their teenage dreams were — all the girls that were on your poster walls. “And I want to continue to be one of those … teenage wet dreams,” she added, laughing. With her red-hot MTV Movie Awards performance of “California Gurls” with Snoop Dogg , Perry likely provided plenty more of those moist moments. Although there wasn’t any of the teased nudity, Perry dressed up like a DayGlo Wonder Woman, complete with electric-blue hair and LED-encrusted Daisy Dukes, which was surely enough to send some teenage fantasies into overdrive. Perry, who is slated to host the upcoming Teen Choice Awards on August 9, also made news this week when she appeared to dis Lady Gaga’s new “Alejandro” video, tweeting, “Using blasphemy as entertainment is as cheap as a comedian telling a fart joke.” Perry, who was raised in a strict religious household, seemingly took issue with the controversial video’s depiction of sacred Christian iconography, including scenes of Gaga deep-throating Rosary beads and strutting around in a rubber nun’s habit with an upside-down cross over her crotch. Rihanna Graces Elle Cover, Talks Style

We profiled Rihanna’s red hair earlier this week. We also took a listen (and liking) to her hot new collaboration with Eminem from his upcoming album, Recovery . The girl can definitely be pretty bad ass. But inside is also a fashionista waiting to come out. Gracing the cover of the July issue of Elle , Rihanna muses on fashion and has a few things to say about glamorous, often unattainable – ideals of designers. “I respect designers who aren’t afraid to go outside the box,” she says. “I went to a Jean Paul Gaultier show, and I saw girls who are thicker than me, beautiful and voluptuous and different ethnicities. That made me so excited,” the singer continued. “I thought, Okay, I can work that, for sure.” Rihanna in Elle … and in concert. Of course, the beauty is leaving her mark on couture, as well: “It’s clear there are definitely fewer black women in the high-fashion industry. One of the things I respected most about Gucci was that they did a print campaign with me.” “I’m a black girl on a fashion spread for Gucci—that was a big deal.”

Is Mariah Carey Pregnant?

Online report cites ‘sources’ as confirming that the couple are expecting. By Jocelyn Vena Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images For months, the rumor mill has been speculating that Mariah Carey is pregnant with her and Nick Cannon’s first child — rumors that went into overdrive when it announced last week that Carey would no longer be starring in Tyler Perry’s latest opus , “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf.” On Wednesday (June 2), a “source close to” the couple told RadarOnline.com that the couple are expecting. “They’re both very excited and very happy,” the source reportedly said. “Mariah and Nick want to keep the pregnancy quiet as long as they can.” Reps for Carey and Cannon had not responded to MTV News request for comment at press time. Recently, Cannon hedged that the pair’s dog is pregnant , but many wondered if he was just toying with the media over the speculation. According to an article on UsMagazine.com that was published Wednesday but was apparently no longer on the site at press time, he told fans over the weekend that “the bump is bigger. You can almost see it now!” Radar further reports that Carey never left the couple’s car on Saturday, the day Cannon reportedly spoke to fans, when they were seen going for a drive along the Malibu coastline. However, after she dropped out of the Perry flick, her rep told “She is not doing the movie because her doctor advised her not to. More than that, I cannot comment further.” Earlier this year, Cannon told MTV News that the couple “absolutely plan to have a family. But we gotta prioritize, because that’s a major, major priority. That’s like the only priority in life, when you think about it, is starting and raising a family. We wanna make sure everything is out of the way and that we don’t have any distractions.” Do you think Mariah is pregnant? Sound off in the comments below! Related Artists Mariah Carey Nick Cannon

Eminem Talks Lil Wayne, Rihanna And Pink Recovery Collabos

‘Wayne, to me, is definitely one of the greatest in the game right now,’ Em says during French radio interview. By Gil Kaufman Eminem Photo: Robyn Beck/ AFP/ Getty Images The elusive Eminem spoke to Skyrock Radio in Paris over the weekend and offered a tiny peek at what he has in store for his upcoming Recovery album . While most of the interview consisted of Em cracking jokes with the French DJs, he did briefly touch on hooking up with the incarcerated Lil Wayne on “No Love,” as well as Pink on “Won’t Back Down” and Rihanna on “Love the Way You Lie.” “I’ve always respected what Wayne does, and Wayne, to me, is definitely one of the greatest in the game right now,” he said of Weezy, who is in the midst of a yearlong prison stretch on gun charges. “As far as the songs with Pink and Rihanna … when I did the song that I did with Pink, I laid my parts first and kind of heard her on the record and felt that she would smash this record. And the other one I did with Rihanna is one of those tracks that I felt like only she could pull it off, only she could do it.” He also dropped the first hints about what the video for lead single “Not Afraid” might look like. Promising that it was coming soon (he mentioned “Saturday” but didn’t go into any other detail), Shady said, “The video is … kind of just … there’s a lot of things in it that are metaphorically speaking. There are things that are symbolic in the video. … The overall concept is basically being in a dark place and trying to get to the light.” Among the topics he touched on were 50 Cent slimming down for his upcoming role in “Things Fall Apart,” in which he plays a cancer-stricken football player. “That’s crazy,” Shady said when talk turned to 50’s shocking weight loss. While trying to find out more French cuss words in order to hit on a comely lady named Marie in the studio, Slim Shady deferred to longtime manager Paul Rosenberg when pressed about why the rapper did not make France one of his three tour stops on his upcoming European swing. The interview ended with Em expressing mystification over why people are so excited about soccer’s upcoming World Cup, a stance that might mean he’ll have some ‘splaining to do when he hits the stages in football-crazy Switzerland and the U.K. in July. “Is it politically incorrect if I said I didn’t like soccer?” he asked. “I’m not a big soccer fan.” Were you surprised by Eminem’s Recovery collaborators? Lee DeWyze Admits ‘American Idol’ Theme Weeks Were ‘Frustrating’

‘There’s some songs I never would have sang in a million years, but I signed up for it,’ he says. By Katie Byrne Lee DeWyze Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Fox Lee DeWyze proved on “American Idol” that everyone truly loves an underdog. He might not have started out as a bold-faced name on season nine, but his consistent growth from ball-of-nerves to confident rocker resonated with America and landed him the coveted crown on Wednesday night. We caught up with Lee on Friday (May 28) to talk about the show’s frustrating theme weeks, how he chose U2’s “Beautiful Day” as his first single and what his upcoming album will sound like. Q : The judges often talk about showing who you’ll be as an artist, but then you’re forced to sing songs out of your comfort zone with the different theme weeks. Was that frustrating? A : I think a big part about “American Idol” that scares people and has, I’m sure, stopped people from trying out is the fact that you do have to do things that aren’t necessarily your genre. You’re given a song, and you do have some say in it, but you go with whatever song you have to go with. You take that song, and the judges always say, “Make it your own! Make it your own!” And sometimes it sounds repetitive when they say that. … I just wanted to take every song and make it sound like a song that Lee sang. The judges credited me; they said, “You had some great arrangements.” We were given free reign to arrange songs the way we wanted. That was what got me through that part, because if it was just “Go up there and sing the songs exactly like they’re written,” then that would have been a lot more difficult than it was. When we did Shania Twain Week , that was a rough week for me, because it’s so out of my element. But I did what I could with the song. It’s part of the game, though. That’s what “American Idol” is: It’s “go up on the stage, play a cover song, and do the best you can your way and make them original.” I think that I was able to do that. It was frustrating at times, I won’t lie. It was. Because there’s some songs I never would have sang in a million years, but I signed up for it, and that’s the rules. You play by ’em, and you get by as best you can. Q : This season, you also have a cover song as your first single. How did you feel about that, and how did you choose that particular song? A : I like that song a lot. It’s a really good song. Is it something that’s necessarily in my genre? No. But again, there were songs on the table, and that was the one I thought would represent the moment the best, because this year they didn’t have an original song written for this specifically. Whatever the reasons for that are — there’s reasons. [ Laughs. ] I don’t know all the ups and downs of the behind-the-scenes stuff. It’s just been a big game of “play by the rules.” If it was up to me, there were certain things I would have done differently. Like onstage, maybe a little bit longer sets would have been cool; to be able to get into the song, instead of just “ready, go.” But again, that’s all part of it. Just being able to accept it was the hard part. But then, once you accept it, you can just roll with it. You can make the songs your own, and then move on. Q : What artists could you see yourself channeling on your upcoming album? A : I just got the Kings of Leon album [ Only by the Night ]. I liked their first albums a lot; they were a little harder. I really dig their newest album. I like that sound. That’s a sound I go for a lot of the time. It’s very gritty, but at the same time, it’s got great hooks and great lyrics. They break it down, and they can be a little more chill [or] a little more heavy. I’m always looking for new music. I’m going to be listening to a lot of different things for inspiration. Q : Were you able to talk to Simon Cowell after the show? A : I did see Simon [at the “Idol” wrap party], and we cheers’ed, and he said, “Congratulations,” and told me he’s proud of me, and he’s excited to be working with me. And I told him, “Thanks for the opportunity,” because without “American Idol,” I wouldn’t have had this platform to start a career on a major level. It was cool. We got to spend a little time together and talk. And it was a moment I won’t forget, because that was a big moment for me. Will you follow Lee’s post-“Idol” career? Let us know in the comments!
