In 1949, President Harry Truman signed the Housing Act, which gave federal, state, and local governments unprecedented power to shape residential life. One of the Housing Act’s main initiatives – “urban renewal” – destroyed about 2,000 communities in the 1950s and ’60s and forced more than 300,000 families from their homes. Overall, about half of urban renewal’s victims were black, a reality that led… Broadcasting platform : YouTube Source : Reason Magazine – Hit & Run Discovery Date : 28/09/2011 12:54 Number of articles : 2

Top 10 Black Wedding Songs

Link:

Next to saying the vows, watching a couple have their first dance is the most moving part of a wedding. That’s the moment when nobody in the world matters except your new spouse. As a guest, you get to see how deep the love between the couple is simply by the way they stare into each other’s eyes during their first dance. Since the summer weding season is winding down, The Urban Daily put together a list of the top wedding songs in no particular order. Kenny Lattimore – “For You” If you’ve to a wedding and haven’t heard this song, question the DJ’s abilities. “For You” is enveloped in romance and pure emotion. We find a man not afraid to express the love he has for his queen. Don’t let the groom start whispering the lyrics to his bride as the song plays. The reception might have to be cut short, if you catch what I’m throwing at you. Luther Vandross – “Here And Now” With Luther as R&B’s perennial lothario, there is no way this could exist without this song. The lyrics to “Here an Now” practically read like vows themselves. “Here and now/I promise to love faithfully /You’re all I need” Enough said. Monica – “Angel of Mine” This Georgia songbird had one of her biggest hts with the Rodney Jerkins produced hit. Though many dismiss the notion of love at first site, Monica was singing about having an instant attraction to a person’s spirit. A spiritual connection before a physical one, that’s rare these days. Prince – “Adore” Prince’s duality when it comes to music is amazing. One minute he’s tricking with a darling named Nikki and in another moment he’s so deep in love he can’t find the words to express it. “Adore ” is one of the most sizzling and devoted songs The Purple One has ever recorded. When a man tells you, “You can burn up my clothes, smash up my ride.” That’s way more than love. No one captures those moments in song better than Prince. Sade – “No Ordinary Love” Sade’s first single from her fourth album has been a wedding staple since its release in 1992. Though the production is seductive, the words are honest. She sings of giving her man all she’s got, despite the fact he has made her cry. Sade just couldn’t help falling in love and most newlyweds identify with those emotions. Anita Baker – “Sweet Love” Anita Baker is the queen of love songs. The only other person to match her catalog of love tracks is Luther Vandross. With “Sweet Love,” Anita steps into the role of a woman unshamed to say how much she loves her man. “Sweet Love” illustrates what a true marriage is-a partnership based on love and commitment. Michael Jackson – “Lady In My Life” No matter how you look at it, this song is beautiful. Michael Jackson goes in about the woman he longs to spend the rest of his life with. The song begins with sweet whispers of love and mounts in intensity until MJ is hollering, ” I love you. I love you. I need you. I want you, Babe!” what more needs to be said? “I do.” K-Ci and JoJo – “All My Life” If you’ve been to a wedding after 1998, you are probably sick of this song as a wedding song. Although, it’s the perfect soundtrack for a wedding, hearing it at yours, your cousin’s, your best friend’s, your uncle’s, and everybody else you know’s wedding is a bit much. Even though we get sick of it when we have to go to more than one wedding in a month, we love the sentiments behind the track. That’s pure unadulterated love codensed into a five minute song. Eric Benet and Tamia – “Spend My Life With You” This love song is about being comfortable in your relationship. “Spend My Life With You” celebrates simple things like waking up next to each other and looking into each other’s eyes. Eric Benet and Tamia’s duet has slid out of speakers at weddings and is sure to continue to be a wedding ballad for the rest of all time. Lionel Richie and Diana Ross – “Endless Love” You can’t bring up weddings and love without talking about the epic Lionel Richie and Diana Ross cut. the sweeping strings and saccharine words make you wish you had that type of love. If you have that kind of love, “Endless Love” makes you want to hold on to it forever. Related Posts: Kim K. & Kris Humphries Wed In California, Details Inside! Wiz also tells MTV News he looks forward to appearing on Taylor Gang fam Chevy Woods’ Cookout mixtape. By Rob Markman Wiz Khalifa Photo: Dana Nalbandian/ WireImage Wiz Khalifa refuses to rest on his laurels. Just six months after the release of his gold major-label debut, Rolling Papers, the “Black and Yellow” MC revealed to MTV News that he has already started work on his follow-up. “Yeah, I’ve started working on a next album just to get a feel for where I’m going with it,” Wiz told us on the BMI Urban Awards red carpet last month. ” ‘No Sleep’ is gonna do what it’s gonna do,” Khalifa said of the fourth and latest single from Rolling Papers. “Hopefully, it takes off; it’s been getting a lot of love so far.” As of now, there is still no date or title for the next Wiz album, but fans of the Pittsburgh rap star will get to hear some new music from him later this month when his pal Chevy Woods drops his mixtape The Cookout. “You know me, I’m always working, doing new stuff. I got artists that I’m working on and stuff like that; Chevy is doin’ his thing.” The next artist to emerge from the smoked-out spitter’s Taylor Gang crew is Chevy Woods . During the past few months, Wiz and Woods have been actively promoting Cookout, the soon-to-be-released Chevy tape that will prominently feature Khalifa as well. “[Wiz’s] gonna be on at least half or more [of the songs],” Chevy told Mixtape Daily in July. “It’s my tape, featuring him.” “It’s gonna be coming out in early September, so anybody who wants to hear some new raps from me, they can go get that,” Wiz confirmed.”And, of course, Chevy is gonna kill it and do his thing. It’s gonna be real fun.” Are you looking forward to what Chevy and Wiz cook up? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Wiz Khalifa

Justin Bieber Can’t Stay Away From Cobra Starship’s Drums

‘He could beat me up, so I can’t say anything,’ Cobra drummer Nate Novarro says of Bieber hopping on his kit before VMAs. By James Montgomery Justin Bieber (file) Photo: Getty Images Anyone who was inside the J.W. Marriott in downtown Los Angeles during rehearsals for the 2011 Video Music Awards pre-show can surely attest to two things: the catchiness of Cobra Starship’s “You Make Me Feel …” (especially since they sound-checked it roughly 52 dozen times) and the fact that, during a quick break from all that sound-checking, Justin Bieber totally snuck behind the band’s drum kit and let it rip. Bieber, of course, was there to support his girlfriend, Selena Gomez , who was serving as MTV News’ special pre-show correspondent, and he’s definitely no stranger to the occasional drum solo , so the whole thing sort of made sense (though, to be fair, pretty much everyone who saw it go down couldn’t believe their eyes). But, when we caught up with Cobra Starship backstage at the Fueled by Ramen 15th anniversary show in New York on Wednesday, we had to ask them: Were they aware of Bieber’s impromptu drum performance? And, more importantly, did they take umbrage to it? “I heard about that, that Justin Bieber was playing our kit,” Cobra bassist Alex Suarez laughed. “It’s a rental,” drummer Nate Novarro added. Of course, you’ll notice that Novarro didn’t say whether Bieber’s actions angered him. Is the drum kit, much like the pitcher’s mound , a sacred space in which only a select few dare tread? “Kind of, but [Bieber] could beat me up, so I can’t approach him and say anything,” Novarro said. It should be noted, however, that this is not the first time Bieber has hijacked Cobra Starship’s kit . At the 2009 Jingle Ball in Sacramento, California, he took the stage during the band’s set after frontman Gabe Saporta challenged him to a dance-off, but, since JB was still recovering from a broken foot , all he could do was sit down behind the drums and bang out a searing solo. And that, Novarro believes, set the precedent for the VMA pre-show incident. “He showed me what he could do, and it was good, so I was like, ‘You can come back and do it whenever you want,’ ” he said. “I think he just took full advantage of that.” And it was at that exact minute that Cobra guitarist Ryland Blackinton — perhaps wanting to quash any beef with the Biebs (especially since the two are set to tour Mexico and South America next month) — stepped in to diffuse the situation and let it be known that they were cool with any and all Bieber-related drum performances. “He didn’t overstep any boundaries,” Blackinton said. Drake Promises Lots Of ‘Radio’ Records On Take Care

‘The purpose of that record was solely to deliver a message,’ Drake tells MTV News of first single ‘Headlines.’ By Rob Markman Drake Photo: MTV News Maybe “Headlines” wasn’t the radio smash that fans were expecting from Drake, but the OVOXO star says that it was the perfect single to set off his upcoming Take Care. “I think it’s great; the purpose of that record was solely to deliver a message,” Drizzy told MTV News last month on the BMI Urban Awards red carpet. “I could’ve gone with the record that was sort of super radio-friendly, but I really just wanted to talk to the people with the first record.” Rather than an emotional ballad or party record, Drake’s “Headlines” details the MC’s frame of mind going into his second album. Despite his success, he raps from an underdog’s perspective. “I had someone tell me I fell off, ooh I needed that/ And they wanna see me pick back up, well, where’d I leave it at?” Not your standard pop fare, but Drake, who has crafted hits like “Best I Ever Had,” “Find Your Love” and “Successful,” said that Take Care will have Billboard -caliber tracks as well. “I’ve got a lot of records that I think will live on radio for a while,” he said. “I’m excited about everything that’s happened thus far.” Although “Headlines” is the album’s first official single, there have been other leaks like “Marvins Room” and “Dreams Money Can Buy,” two songs Drake described on his October’s Very Own blog as pieces of a bigger story. So what story is the Young Money soldier trying to tell on Take Care ? “It’ll let you know exactly what’s goin’ on in my life because unlike a lot of other artists, I don’t take to social media outlets to tell you what’s goin’ on in my life,” he replied. “I don’t sit there and complain about stuff all day long, I don’t lash out, I just sort of save it for the album, so I think if you want to know what’s going on with me at all, you’ll just listen to Take Care and it’ll answer all of your questions.” Share your thoughts on Drizzy’s Take Care singles so far in the comments below!
