‘Captain America: The First Avenger’: The Reviews Are In!

Film should give ‘Harry Potter’ a run for its money this weekend. By Josh Wigler Chris Evans in “Captain America: The First Avenger” Photo: Paramount Pictures The summer of superheroes rages on this weekend with the theatrical release of “Captain America: The First Avenger.” It’s the final building block audiences need before the full picture of Joss Whedon’s “The Avengers” comes into focus this summer, and by all accounts, the movie does not disappoint. Sporting a fresh rating at review aggregate Rotten Tomatoes , both comic book fans and casual moviegoers alike are feeling the patriotic splendor that Cap has to offer, so “Harry Potter” better watch out: Steve Rogers’ mighty shield could very will split the Boy Who Lived’s wand in half this weekend! Read on for a selection of the “Cap” reviews currently rocking the Web, and check out our own “Captain America” review on Splash Page. And if the star-spangled superhero spirit moves you, give us your own reviews in the comments section below. The Story “It was a pleasure to realize, once ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ got under way, that hey, here is a real movie, not a noisy assembly of incomprehensible special effects. Of course it’s loaded with CGI. It goes without saying it’s preposterous. But it has the texture and takes the care to be a full-blown film. You know, like with a hero we care about and who has some dimension. And with weight to the story. As we plunge ahead into a limitless future of comic-book movies, let this be an inspiration rather than Thor or Green Lantern. ” — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times The Hero “As the titular comic book character, Chris Evans has an appealing, earnest quality, whether he’s playing the digitally enhanced (reduced?) scrawny Steve Rogers or the well-muscled super-soldier dubbed Captain America. Evans provides just the right human anchor to the flash and dazzle of director Joe Johnston’s production. The movie wouldn’t work without Evans’ likability and the sense of integrity he projects, as well as his all-American good looks.” — Claudia Puig, USA Today The Villain “Then there’s Hugo Weaving as Captain America’s nemesis, Red Skull — a role that requires delivering a genuine performance from behind grotesque crimson prosthetics, which Weaving accomplishes with admirable dexterity. In fact, everyone hits their marks with energy and finesse in ‘Captain America,’ which with its clean, Art Deco lines and sprightly spirit exemplifies why comic book movies are such reliable fodder for Hollywood. They come pre-storyboarded, after all; their gadgets, dinguses and doo-dads are a production artist’s dream, just as those tights, capes and masks must provide fetishistic frissons for the most on-trend costume designer.” — Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post The Action “A chase and shoot-out in a ‘Dick Tracy’ version of New York is one of the most thrilling scenes of the summer movie season, yet this generous film keeps the popcorn popping for two full hours. It’s got musical numbers, as Rogers is costumed as Captain America and sent on a war-bonds tour; it’s got a prison break, as the touring celebrity frees some multicultural P.O.W.s from the Nazis, and it’s got a mythic smackdown, as Captain America squares off against Germanic evil genius Johann Schmidt (the hugely entertaining Hugo Weaving, mimicking documentarian Werner Herzog).” — Joe Williams, St. Louis Post-Dispatch The Setting “Though it begins and ends with a scene or two in the present, as directed by Joe Johnston from a screenplay by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, ‘Captain America’ is first and foremost an origins story. Almost half of the film’s running time elapses before Rogers gets any kind of power at all, and though its elements are awfully familiar, it’s the most involving part of the film because it takes advantage of Evans’ performance. These early-days sections are so old-fashioned that, if you take away the copious special effects, watching ‘Captain America’ feels akin to watching the venerable 1950s television version of ‘Superman’ starring George Reeves. Buttons are pushed, dials are turned, secret passwords are uttered and lights blink, just like they did way back when.” — Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times Check out everything we’ve got on “Captain America: The First Avenger.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Danielle Doty Crowned Miss Teen USA!

The Miss Teen USA pageant crowned a new, gorgeous titleholder last night in Danielle Doty, an 18-year-old hailing from Harlingen, Texas. Doty beat out Audra Mari of North Dakota to win the title and will take over from the reigning Miss Teen USA, Kamie Crawford of Maryland. Alexis Swanstrom (Miss Teen California), Taylor Clark (Miss Teen Kansas) and Sydnee Stottlemyre (Miss Teen Missouri) rounded out the top five. The prestigious beauty pageant, which streamed live online, did not take place in the United States, but rather at the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas. Danielle Doty is the second Texan to be named Miss Teen USA. Christie Lee Woods, who later starred on The Amazing Race , won the title in 1996. Other notable Miss Teen USA title holders include Bridgette Wilson-Sampras (1990), Vanessa Minnillo (1998) and Tami Farrell (2003), who later went on to become Miss California after Carrie Prejean stripped and was stripped of her crown. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie Not Getting Married

Angelina Jolie, 36, told ABC News last year she and Pitt would get married if their kids – Maddox, 9, Pax, 7, Zahara, 6, Shiloh, 5, twins Knox and Vivienne, 3 – asked them to, saying, “I think it would be hard to say no to the kids.” And Pitt, 47, told USA Weekend, “The kids ask about marriage. It#39;s meaning more and more to them. So it#39;s something we#39;ve got to look at.” Add to that construction going on at Chateau Miraval, their home in the south of France, as well as the recent passag

Mistrial Declared in Roger Clemens Perjury Trial

The judge declared a mistrial today in Roger Clemens’ perjury case after prosecutors showed jurors evidence that was previously ruled inadmissible. U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton said the prosecutors had made a grave error and that the baseball legend could no longer be assured a fair trial. Walton scheduled a September 2 hearing to determine whether to hold a new trial, but the jurors were dismissed and the case is off – for now. Roger Clemens was indicted for perjury for allegedly lying to Congress during a 2008 investigation into performance-enhancing drug use in the sport. He is not being charged with using drugs, per se, but for knowingly false testimony he allegedly gave involving his use of the substances years ago. This morning, in the second day of testimony, the judge interrupted prosecutors’ playing of a video from his 2008 testimony before Congress. The jury was removed from the room. When they returned, they were dismissed, and the judge issued the following explanation of why: “There are rules that we play by and those rules are designed to make sure both sides receive a fair trial. If this man got convicted, he would go to jail.” Because prosecutors broke his rules, “the ability with Mr. Clemens with this jury to get a fair trial with this jury would be very difficult if not impossible.” Prosecutors suggested the problem could have been fixed with an instruction to the jury to disregard the evidence, but Walton seemed skeptical. He said he could never know what impact the evidence would have during the jury’s deliberations “when we’ve got a man’s liberty at interest.” “I don’t see how we un-ring the bell,” he said. Defense attorney Rusty Hardin patted an unsmiling Clemens on the back as the judge announced his decision. Clemens did not speak to reporters. Clemens and his lawyers remain under a court gag order and they declined to comment as they left. “I’m not going to say anything,” he said.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt: NOT Getting Married Anytime Soon!

Us Weekly tried to make the case with a splashy new cover story, but reports of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie getting married this summer are false. Sources close to the couple say they won’t be walking down the aisle any time soon and ” there is no evidence nor any single truth” to Us ‘ story. The two, who adamantly state that gay marriage should be legalized everywhere, say they remain open to one day tying the knot. But not now. Recent remarks by the two helped fuel the never-ending rumors. Pitt told USA Today that the brood is curious: “The kids ask about it … It’s meaning more and more to them. It’s something we’ve got to look at.” “I think it would be hard to say no to the kids,” Angelina added. Construction at Chateau Miraval, their home in the south of France, was rumored to be part of their secret wedding preparations. Not the case. Professionally, Pitt is filming World War Z (Jolie and the kids stayed with him in Malta) and will be busy promoting Moneyball and Cogan’s Trade . Angelina, meanwhile, is gearing up for her directorial debut, In the Land of Blood and Honey , set in war-torn regions of the former Yugoslavia.

A “Lil Positivity”: Oprah Winfrey Says She Is Going To Africa To Become A High School Teacher

Damn, word… Oprah Winfrey is back in the USA after spending time with her “girls” at the school she opened in South Africa, but don’t fear, ladies, Miss O will be returning soon in the role of teacher. “They were all stressed for tests, but doing fine,” Oprah emailed fans — including yours truly — about her students. “No major crisis this trip. I love being with them and talking to them about all things important. When I’m there I’m talking from the time I get up till I go to bed, about EVERYTHING teenage girls are going through. It’s the same all over the world.” Oprah revealed that she would be returning this fall to teach a class called ‘It’s Life 101′ about all the stuff she wished someone had told her about how the world really works. “Should be fun since I love to teach. And they’re like sponges,” Oprah said. “Like 12th graders everywhere, this first class is both anxious and excited about going to college. Most will be the first in their family. So it’s a very big deal for them, and they’re feeling the pressure.” Adding that there is nothing like leaving the USA to get a deeper appreciation of the freedoms we sometimes take for granted. For what it’s worth, this is a pretty good idea that should be in every High School. Kids need to know what exactly the “adult world” is about, especially as they are about to enter college. Source
