The USA network has announced two projects in development from NBC vets. The first, an untitled project being penned by Kath & Kim ‘s John Michael Higgins centers on a middle-class insurance investigator who finds high-stakes drama in dull jobs. The Office ‘s Steve Carrell, has signed on to executive produce with Thom Hinkle ( Rockford Files ). Meanwhile, Anthony Edwards ( ER ) is set to executive produce the second project, The Velvet Hammer , about a Texan divorcee who’s also an FBI agent. [ THR ]

(Atlanta Journal-Constitution) NEW YORK, USA: Ed Roberts, whose early Altair 8800 computer is said to have inspired Bill Gates and Paul Allen to start today’s IT giant Microsoft, died in Georgia on Thursday at the age of 68. Though making of a PC is too complex to recognize one person alone in the industry, Roberts is called by some as “father of the personal computer”. The Altair is widely credited as the first personal computer and for helping inspire the modern computer industry, said a Cnet report. According to Cnet, it was Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS), a company co-founded by Roberts, that introduced the Altair in 1975. When an article on the Altair appeared in the January 1975 issue of Popular Electronics, Allen noticed this and showed the story to Gates. Matt James – Dead at 18, Falls from Hotel Balcony – The four-start offensive tackle from Xavier High School in Cincinnaty, Ohio, Matt James, died after falling off from the third floor hotel balcony in Panama City. On more than one recent occasion, Miley Cyrus has said she plans on taking a hiatus from music to focus on acting. Let’s hope her future efforts on the big screen go better than The Last Song . A majority of film critics have come down hard on the movie, specifically citing Miley’s acting as “stiff” and “unconvincing.” Here are excerpts of what they had to say about the flick, which opens this week… A more convincing star could make this a degree more tolerable, although in Cyrus’s defense not much more. Allegedly, this is the film in which Cyrus gets all, like, dramatic. If by ‘dramatic’ one means pouty, sullen, and cute, then OK. — The Boston Globe Acting, for the moment at least, seems almost entirely beyond her… she pouts, slouches, storms in and out of rooms and occasionally cracks a snaggle-toothed smile, but most of the time she seems to be mugging for the camera, play-acting rather than exploring the motives and feelings of her character. — The New York Times Miley Cyrus met boyfriend Liam Hemsworth on the set of The Last Song. That’s about the only positive thing to come from the movie. It’s the worst of both worlds as Disney cash cow Miley Cyrus makes the most dubious “dramatic” debut of any singer since Britney Spears. — The New York Post As likable a performer as she is, Cyrus simply can’t act. Even Sparks’ formulaic material proves too challenging for her. — The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel All the obvious elements combine to manipulate the audience into a weepy time at the movies – again. — USA Today Will you go see The Last Song? And now it’s time for voters to take matters into their own hands, according to Hiatt. “This year, one in six legislators sponsored marijuana reform legislation,” the activist attorney said Tuesday at a press conference on the steps of the Capitol Building in Olympia. “And again this year, major reform did not get out of committee,” Hiatt said. “So we formed Sensible Washington and wrote an initiative that removes the criminal and civil penalties for adults.” Every poll taken shows that if I-1068 gets on the ballot, it will win. Washington voters support sensible marijuana laws.
