Walking Dead Vs. Lost: Others, Doomsday Clocks and More Shared Blood

Leading up to The Walking Dead ‘s season finale, the thematic and story point similarities between AMC’ s freshman series and ABC’ s dearly departed Lost had been amassing not much unlike bludgeoned “geeks.” Movieline even noted a few of them earlier during this short first cycle. But it was the Walking Dead season-ender that pushed us to detail just how much “blood” the two series share. Warning — finale spoilers ahead!

Today in MPAA Hypocrisy: Good vs. Bad Oral Sex, Kids With Weapons

I get just as tired of writing this crap up as you probably do reading about it, but for some reason it feels like the beginning of the end of Hollywood in a way: The MPAA ratings board is under assault again for determining the oral-sex sequence featured in Blue Valentine is worthy of at least some of the film’s NC-17, while letting the same act — by two women — slide in the R-rated Black Swan . Oh, and then there’s the kid with the knife.

And while most of the year’s big Oscar-buzz-generating films have yet to open, the indies, as usual, are a step ahead. On Tuesday (November 30), a day after “Winter’s Bone” won best feature at the Gotham Awards, the film garnered seven Independent Spirit Award nominations, including a nod for best feature. “Winter’s Bone,” directed by Debra Granik, is a dark drama about a girl (Jennifer Lawrence) looking for her father in a drug-riddled rural Arkansas community. Granik earned nominations for best director and best screenplay along with co-writer Anne Rosellini. Rounding out the nominations for Spirit’s best feature list was Danny Boyle’s “127 Hours,” Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan,” Noah Baumbach’s “Greenberg” and Lisa Cholodenko’s “The Kids Are All Right.” James Franco got a nod for best actor for his role as a hiker trapped in a canyon who must cut off his own arm to survive in “127 Hours.” His competition is John C. Reilly for “Cyrus,” Ben Stiller for “Greenberg,” Ronald Bronstein for “Daddy Longlegs” and Aaron Eckhart for “Rabbit Hole.” On the best actress side of Spirit nominees was Natalie Portman for her portrayal of a ballet dancer in “Black Swan,” Michelle Williams in “Blue Valentine,” Annette Bening in “The Kids Are All Right,” Greta Gerwig in “Greenberg,” Nicole Kidman in “Rabbit Hole” and Jennifer Lawrence in “Winter’s Bone.” The Independent Spirit Awards, given out by Film Independent, is a major event for films made outside of the major Hollywood studios with budgets of less than $20 million. The 2011 ceremony will be held on February 26 in Santa Monica and will be hosted by “Community” star Joel McHale. Kat Von D Loses Cat, Home in Fire

Kat Von D’s life just went up in smoke. The outspoken tattoo artist is mourning the loss of her cat Valentine, whom she lost in a house fire. “R.I.P. my little Valentine,” she tweeted Sunday. That’s so sad, not to mention scary. The L.A. Fire department was called and arrived at 11:23 p.m. Sunday to battle what was a very strong blaze. The cause of Kat Von D’s house fire is still under investigation. “Fire fighters encountered heavy fire with extreme smoke but they were able to knock down the fire,” the captain said . “There was no one home.” “My house burned down last night with my cat inside,” Von D, who has been dating Jesse James since August, explained early Monday morning. “Finally get to sleep away the rest of today. Hope tomorrow is gentler,” the L.A. Ink star said. “To gain everything, you must lose everything.” Good to see she’s staying strong through this.

Justin Bieber Gives Fans A Chance To Be In His 3-D Movie

Beliebers can upload a video of themselves singing ‘That Should Be Me’ to get in the film. By Kara Warner Justin Bieber Photo: Frederick Breedon/ Getty Images Attention Justin Bieber fans (you might want to sit down while reading this, if you haven’t already seen the news on Bieber’s Twitter account): You have an opportunity to be in his new 3-D movie! That’s right, Justin Bieber and director Jon Chu made the announcement via Twitter on Tuesday (August 24) that they are hosting a 24-hour casting call for all the Beliebers out there to be in their new concert extravaganza. All it takes is a visit to the website BieberFever.com/movie . According to the site, fans have an opportunity to “be a part” of the movie, which could mean any number of things, as the details in the announcement are few (we recommend a thorough perusal of Paramount Pictures’ “terms of use” statement for further explanation before submission). To be considered, fans must submit a home video of themselves singing along to Bieber’s “That Should Be Me” or they should “Show us how ‘U Smile’ ” by sending in a photo or video. When Chu and Bieber made the Twitter-nouncement on Tuesday afternoon, Bieber followed up his initial tweet with an update that fans had already overwhelmed the website’s server. “Sorry u guys crashed the server!!” he tweeted. “Haha. It’s back up now!! Get in MY MOVIE!!! U got less than 24 hours!!” When MTV News caught up with Chu recently (who also directed “Step-Up 3-D”), he said the Bieber movie will be for everyone — not just his devoted fans. “[It’s] a movie for his fans, a movie for people who don’t know him, and we’re gonna tell the underdog story of where he came from,” Chu said. “There’s not going to be acted-out scenes and I can’t talk about the rest. It’s not your typical concert film and it’s not going to be a biopic … but it is about his life. I think it’s more of a documentary. We’re going to figure it out as we go.” As for how much of it will be in 3-D, he said, “You’ll have to see it. We’re figuring that out now.” The Justin Bieber 3-D movie is set to open on Valentine’s Day weekend. Will you submit a video to be in Bieber’s movie? Let us know in the comments!
