Matisyahu Says Olympic Song ‘One Day’ Is ‘A Global Anthem’

‘I wanted to write a song that was an accessible global anthem for hope and peace,’ MC says. By Kyle Anderson Matisyahu Photo: Brian Appio Matisyahu is honest: He’s not exactly the biggest Olympics aficionado. Still, that didn’t stop him from crafting “One Day,” a collaboration with Akon that has been serving as the official anthem of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. The song wasn’t written expressly for the games (it first appeared on Matisyahu’s 2009 album Light ), but the themes and goals of the track ended up applying perfectly. “I wanted to write a song that was an accessible global anthem for hope and peace,” the MC told MTV News. “I don’t know exactly how it came about, but somebody heard it and thought it would be a good fit.” Since the start of the games, “One Day” has popped up in a number of places during NBC’s broadcasts, from soundtracking montages to scoring bumpers. The MC even got the opportunity to travel to Vancouver for a few days. While he was there, he felt the positive vibe that has extended to everybody in Vancouver around the games. “I had one moment when we were performing and we were playing ‘One Day’ and I looked out into the crowd and saw all these different flags,” he explained. “Everybody has their flags, and it was a cool a really cool feeling — a utopian kind of feeling.” Even though he doesn’t consider himself much of a Winter Olympics enthusiast, he has plenty of background in some of the biggest sports of the games. “I played hockey growing up and it’s a sport I really enjoy. I also worked on a ski mountain for a few years and got into snowboarding, so I’m something of a winter sports kind of guy,” he said. As a result, he has been deeply invested in the United States’ ongoing improbable run (including their upset victory over Canada). If nothing else, it keeps things interesting while he’s on the road (continuing a tour that will last well into the spring). “Some guys in my band are Canadian, and we all grew up playing hockey, so there’s a friendly rivalry happening.” Related Artists Matisyahu

Andrew Koenig’s Parents Walk Out Before ‘Larry King’ Interview

Missing ‘Growing Pains’ actor’s parents left Vancouver studio for unknown reasons. By Eric Ditzian Andrew Koenig Photo: IMDB Only minutes before the parents of Andrew Koenig , the former “Growing Pains” star who’s been missing since February 14, were set to be interviewed on “Larry King Live” Wednesday night, the couple unexpectedly walked out on the show. Toward the end of the program, King promoted his upcoming interview with “Star Trek” alum Walter Koenig and wife Judy Levin-Koenig, showing a live shot via satellite of the couple in Vancouver, where their son was last seen. When the host returned from a commercial break, though, the Koenigs had already left. “I’m told that they left the studio, so we’ll take a quick break and find out why,” King said, tossing to another commercial. After the break, King said, “For some reason unbeknownst to anyone Walter Koenig, the father of the missing Andrew Koenig, and Judy Levin-Koenig, the mother of the missing Andrew Koenig, left the studio in Vancouver. We checked them out, they were prepared to go on. I said ‘hello,’ they both said ‘hello.’ We said we’d be on in two minutes, they said ‘fine,’ and they got up and left for reasons unknown.” The abrupt departure caused viewers to speculate that the Koenigs had received distressing news in the moments before their interview. An inside source at “King” told RadarOnline.com that they have no information about why the Koenigs left. “What I know is exactly what you saw and heard on our show,” the source said. Best known for his “Growing Pains” role as Richard “Boner” Stabone (star Kirk Cameron’s best friend), Koenig was last seen in Vancouver on February 14 and was expected to return home to California on February 16. According to statements from his family and from Vancouver police, the actor has been suffering from depression.

Is the Internet Ruining the Olympics? [Olympic Mysteries]

Watching the silly drama unfold yesterday about disappointed skier Julia Mancuso ‘s mean Tweets about teammate Lindsey Vonn , I started considering how the internet has played a part in these Hotlympics. And I don’t like it! Obviously Gawker has been giving you the Best Olympics Coverage On the Internet , so the ol’ series of tubes has definitely proved good for something these past two weeks. But otherwise? It’s mostly doing damage. Are we surprised that two athletes who have competed with each other since childhood are not always the best of friends? We really shouldn’t be. But then Mancuso uses a bad word in a Tweet while discussing yesterday’s flagged Giant Slalom run (caused by Vonn crashing) and everyone gets allll posty about how there’s Fightz! going on among the ranks of the women skiers. And everyone picks it up, because who doesn’t like two pretty girls fighting and splattering sexy mud all over our beautiful, kind global celebration . Frustratingly, the athletes can get all caught up in it too, and the whole gross, dumb thing keeps getting frothier and frothier. Or attend the tale of poor Scotty Lago, the dudebro snowboarder (is there any other kind?) who became be-scandal’d and was told to go home because of sexxxy photos he took in the Olympic Village. To be fair, it is quite shocking that a 22-year-old kid who just won an Olympic medal in Baggy-Pant Spinning would be gallivanting around Athlete Disneyworld flirting and trying to pull a little tail. And because of The Internet, TMZ can run some candid snaps of such behavior and Vancouver tells him to go home. Lest we fans start to suspect that the Olympians might be doing bad sex things ! And of course the internet is also giving us those cruel, horrible spoilers. Right on the front pages of the New York Times or, more mind-bogglingly, NBC.com. I am fine with the fact that time is what it is and the work day is too, so I can’t really watch everything when it’s happening. Say what you will about NBC’s Americans First, Questions Never airing practices, but an 8pm block is, I suspect, still the most sensible way for us to watch the games. Yet the internet doesn’t respect our personal wishes and splashes this spoiler shit everywhere they can. “Why are Bode Miller’s race results on LARPer.com??,” I think desperately to myself when scanning my favorite websites. It’s just a shame. Obviously the internet has done some good things for us during these Olympics (two thumbs), but for the most part I think we’d all be better off without all the peripheral noise it creates. That said, if the web can dig up anything about, oh say, just off the top of my head, some sort of Joubert/Weir hate-sex scandal or something, I think some of us could take an academic interest in that. As always, pics via Getty

‘Growing Pains’ Actor Andrew Koenig Cleared Out Apartment, Friend Says

Missing actor told friends he planned to move back to Vancouver to ‘start over,’ pal tells TMZ. By Gil Kaufman Andrew Koenig Photo: IMDB While Canadian police continue their search for missing actor Andrew Koenig , a longtime friend told TMZ on Tuesday (February 23) that the former “Growing Pains” co-star emptied out his apartment in Venice, California, because he was looking for a fresh start in Vancouver. Pal Lance Miccio visited Koenig’s California apartment on Monday night and said the flat was cleaned out and that the actor told friends two weeks ago he planned to move back to Vancouver to “start over.” Koenig, who was last seen February 14 and is said to be suffering from depression, chose the site of this year’s winter Olympics because he lived there nearly 20 years ago and considered it his “place for solace.” According to a report from RadarOnline.com, police have tracked electronic information, such as usage of his ATM card and phone, leading them to believe that the 41-year-old Koenig is in the Vancouver area . Constable Tim Fanning told the site that this indicates “Andrew is just lying low in Vancouver.” Koenig, best known for his role as Richard “Boner” Stabone on the hit series “Growing Pains,” reportedly disappeared after visiting friends on February 14. But this week, multiple reported sightings of Koenig have Vancouver police feeling “hopeful that he is still alive.” Police say they’ve gotten a number of tips reporting sightings of Koenig in the Vancouver area. The actor’s family — including his father, “Star Trek” alum Walter Koenig — told People magazine that they were concerned when he did not arrive in California on February 16, as he had previously scheduled to meet friends upon arrival. “Andrew was suffering from depression at the time of his disappearance,” a statement from the family read. Fellow “Growing Pains” star Kirk Cameron recently released a statement pleading for Koenig to contact him. “I am praying for his family during this time of distress and for his safe return,” he said. “Andrew, if you’re reading this, please call me.” While Vancouver police conduct an investigation, Andrew Koenig’s Hollywood peers have begun spreading the news of his disappearance via social-networking sites. Alyssa Milano, Kevin Smith, Alyson Hannigan and Sarah Silverman have all sent out updates from their Twitter accounts about the developing situation.
