Man Commits Suicide On Stage at Swell Season Concert

SF Weekly reports that a man committed suicide last night at a Swell Season show in Saratoga, California. The suicide happened while the band was on stage, between songs. The man jumped from the roof of the Mountain Winery, falling about three stories and landing onstage. According to witnesses quoted in the SF Weekly report, the man landed a few feet away from Swell Season co-leader Glen Hansard. Doctors in the audience attempted to revive him. Afterward, paramedics tried and then abandoned CPR. The show immediately ended. Billboard has a statement from the Swell Season: “The band, crew and all involved with them are shocked and saddened by the unfortunate events of last night. Their hearts go out to the victim and his friends and family.” The man's name has not yet been released. http://pitchfork.com/news/39819-man-commits-suicide-on-stage-at-swell-season-con… added by: slagface

Nobody in Jacksonville Will Pay $50 to See Sarah Palin

Every morning she hears it as soon as she wakes up, tick-tock, tick-tock. It follows her wherever she goes. It is the sound of Sarah Palin’s 15 minutes almost being up. Another sign that the end is near for Palinmania came in Jacksonville, FL where her fundraiser for Heroic Media was moved from a 2,936 seat theatre to a 609 seat venue due to poor ticket sales. As Sarah Jones reported on Sunday, Palin was set to be the big draw and the headliner for a fundraiser benefiting the conservative anti-abortion organization Heroic Media, and as will all organizations that get conned into paying Palin to show up and babble with promises of filled coffers in return, Heroic Media is finding out that Palin is not quite the draw that they thought she was, or to put it another way, she isn’t much of a draw at all. According to the Florida Times-Union, organizers of the event were very upfront and honest about why they decided to move, “An Evening With Sarah Palin” from the 2,936 seat Moran Theatre, to the 609 seat Terry Theatre, Florida Director for Heroic Media Mark Nelson admitted that there weren’t enough tickets sold to hold the event in the bigger building, “We would rather have a packed theater than a theater that’s not so packed.” Not so packed, is a very polite way of saying, “Palin isn’t selling any tickets and if we hold this thing in the big building, we are going to look like idiots because it will be less than a quarter full.” How many tickets have been sold to the Jacksonville fundraiser? Considering that the venue holds 609 people and there are still some $50 tickets for sale on Ticketmaster, a generous sales estimate is probably somewhere in the 400-500 range, which means that the event organizers were expecting about 3,000 people, and instead will be lucky to get 20% of that total. (The Palin popularity myth has claimed another victim). Heroic Media has a generic sounding name, but the group was founded by Swift Boater Brian R. Follett, so the curse of the Palin Money Pit could not happen to a more deserving person or organization. Heroic Media was really hoping to rake in the bucks with Palin. They are also offering a special $500 package, where the sucker, I mean lucky audience member gets, “2 reserved seating tickets, 2 tickets to private reception with Gov. Palin, recognition in event program, memento photo with Gov. Palin.” In case anyone wanted to part with even more money, for $1,500 you could have, “10 reserved seating tickets, 2 tickets to private reception with Gov. Palin, special recognition in event program and on web site, memento photo with Gov. Palin special gift bag with copy of Gov. Palin’s book Going Rogue, pennant flag with your logo and name displayed and/or event signage.” Like any good grifter, Sarah Palin has managed to gain the confidence of her marks by selling them on the notion that she is a marketable commodity. She isn’t. Mother Jones reported on the disaster that was the Sarah Palin Tea Party Convention Banquet. There was the fiasco in Atlanta where a religious benefit for special needs kids was booked for a 13,000 seat arena, but only sold 1,000 tickets, via The Immoral Minority and now the Jacksonville debacle. Sarah Palin can’t sell tickets, and she can’t draw a paying crowd. Few people will want to pay for the privilege of seeing someone who will not go away. Palin is divisive and at best will only be able to draw from a niche audience. If an organization wants to hold a fundraiser, don’t waste your time and money on Sarah Palin, instead, book the most popular professional athlete in your community. They probably won’t cost $100,000 plus expenses, and some of them may even appear for free, if you still find yourself needing to have Sarah Palin appear at your event, in the words of Thomas Tusser, “A fool and his money are soon parted.” added by: toyotabedzrock

Tila Tequila Claims Attack At Gathering Of The Juggalos Festival

The reality starlet says she was pelted with rocks during her performance at the Insane Clown Posse-headlined event. By Mawuse Ziegbe Tila Tequila Photo: Getty Images Reality TV starlet Tila Tequila has claimed she was attacked by concertgoers at the 11th annual Gathering of the Juggalos in Cave-In-Rock, Illinois on Friday. ABC affiliate WSIL in Illinois reports that Hardin County Sheriff Tom Seiner said the former Internet model filed a complaint about fans’ violent behavior during her performance. Tequila, who once starred in the MTV reality show, “A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila,” has since turned to rap and shared the bill with artists such as Lil’ Kim and Method Man. Seiner said Tequila insisted that fans pelted her with rocks and feces during her set. A video of Tequila’s performance posted on TMZ.com shows her working the mic flanked by a couple of beefy men — presumably bodyguards — who pull her out of the way as a concertgoer advances onstage. In the 12-second-long footage, the crowd lobs several objects but the extent of her injuries is unclear. Tequila later addressed the alleged incident on her Twitter page. “The people at Juggalos behavior was disgusting and I am filing a suit against Them now,” she wrote on Saturday. “Pretty soon the owners who run the Juggalos will be bankrupt. My attorney Alan is already on it. This is disgusting behavior from men.” The four-day festival is an annual event geared toward fans of the metal-rap group Insane Clown Posse, who are dubbed “Juggalos.” ICP headlined the fest but a diverse range of performers including Kottonmouth Kings, Naughty by Nature, Coolio, Tone Loc and Twiztid also hit the stage. Seiner did confirm another violent incident at the festival: A 49-year-old Georgia man stabbed a concertgoer at the campgrounds. At press time, the victim was listed in stable condition. Jessica Alba Seduces a Cop with Bullshit Acting of the Day

This cop is a fucking idiot….She is an actor. I can see past that “oops, I didn’t mean to” look….she’s working him like a fucking whore that she is trying to get what she wants and he’s just smitten that his menial bullshit job giving people tickets for talking on their cellphones finally had some purpose….all cuz he pulled over a celebrity, giving him a story to tell his wife who thinks he’s a fucking failure because the only reason he moved to LA wasn’t to be a cop, it just kinda happened after his attempt at an acting career failed him. If I was in his place, I woulda gone for the blowjob, and sure a little ticket won’t give her the fear she needs to suck you off, so I’d also have to make up some crime that looks real serious, like maybe even hit her for murder, even if the victim was her career and sex appeal and the weapon was her pregnancy….give her the death penalty, even though I guess she kinda already gave that to herself… Either way, here’s the only acting work she gets lately….

Web Magazine Accused of Forging Stephen Colbert Interview

It is the kind of story that Stephen Colbert would likely lampoon on his Comedy Central talk show: Online literary magazine reaches out for an interview with a political figure, does not hear back from said political figure, and creates a nine-page interview transcript of an interview with the political figure, hoping that he never finds out. Only this time, the story pits Stephen Colbert as the victim and Wag’s Revue as the accused literary party. Click through for the non-explanation Revue offers its accusers.

Open Thread: President Obama Has Trust Issues

The President recently chided Republicans for their alleged lack of trust in the American people. But who really has the trust issues, wonders David Harsanyi . Was it the administration’s faith in the wisdom of the American parent that persuaded it to shut down the voucher program in Washington, D.C., and continue the left’s decades- long campaign denying school choice for kids and parents? Or was that just faith in public-sector unions? Was faith in American industry behind the Democrats’ support of a stimulus bill that was almost entirely predicated on preserving swollen government spending at the expense of private-sector growth? Is this hallowed faith in the citizenry also what compels the administration to dictate what kind of car we will be driving in the future, what kind of energy we will be filling these “cars” with and what amounts of that energy will be acceptable? Is faith in American know-how why Washington funnels billions of tax dollars each year to its handpicked industry favorites rather than allowing the best and brightest to — please pardon the pun — organically figure out what the most sensible energy policy is, as we have in every other sector? Make sure you follow the link for much, much more. Then return and tell us your thoughts.

Blaming Fox for Shirley Sherrod’s Firing ‘a Lie,’ Fox & Friends Host Declares

On Wednesday’s Fox & Friends, co-host Steve Doocy took strong exception to the NAACP’s claim it was “snookered” by Fox News into denouncing former Agriculture Department official Shirley Sherrod based on excerpts of a speech she delivered at a dinner in March. “There’s a timeline problem,” Doocy pointed out, noting that the NAACP had on Monday night denounced Sherrod as “shameful,” the same day that she was pressured to quit her job ( she says by the White House ). But Fox News never mentioned the story until Tuesday morning. “So for anybody to say that Fox News pressured her out, that is simply a lie,” Doocy asserted. The liberal media have gone from largely ignoring the Sherrod story on Monday night and Tuesday morning to embracing it as a case of a woman maligned by an unfairly edited video clip. But if Sherrod is indeed the victim, much of the damage seems to have been caused by the precipitous reaction of the NAACP and the Obama administration — not liberals’ favorite target, Fox News. Here’s how Doocy explained the matter at the top of the July 21 Fox & Friends, about 6:07am ET: Co-host STEVE DOOCY: The NAACP has done, essentially, a double-back flip. First, here’s what she said regarding the NAACP: [Words on screen] “They got into a fight with the Tea Party, and all of this came out as a result of that.” But here’s what she says about the NAACP, she says, she blames them for her getting in trouble. Now, here’s what the NAACP said on Monday night — on Monday night, as soon as the news had hit the fan. They said [reading] “her actions were shameful. While she went on to explain in the story that she ultimately realized her mistake, as well as the common predicaments working with people of all races, she gave no indication she had attempted to right the wrong she had done to this man.” That was on Monday. Then yesterday, the NAACP came out and they said that we’re now apologizing to her and they say they were snookered by Fox News and Andrew Breitbart. But as [fill-in co-host] Dana [Perino] mentioned, there’s a timeline problem. Fox News did not do the story until after she had already resigned. So she was pressured by the Department of Agriculture to quit. She quit. And then we did the stories. So for anybody to say that Fox News pressured her out, that is simply a lie.

Oksana Grigorieva: Don’t Blame the Victim, Mel!

Mel Gibson’s lawyers say Oksana Grigorieva has lied about her injuries and tampered with evidence regarding his alleged assault on the mother of his child. Now Oksana’s spokesperson claims she is the smear campaign victim. Stephen Jaffe says that “While Mr. Gibson’s camp has floated a variety of false claims to try to distract the public from the true facts at hand, it is telling that his camp has not once denied that it is Mr. Gibson’s voice on the published recordings.” Those being the Mel Gibson tapes . It’s true that the actor’s lawyers haven’t denied it’s him on the tapes, which paint him as a bona fide crazy man. They’ve suggested that the tapes may have been doctored by Oksana and his rants taken out of context – big difference. Both Oksana and Mel claim the other is slandering them . Jaffe then adds, “It is common in such cases for those who perpetrate domestic violence to vilify the victim of that domestic violence. One would hope that those who are close to Mr. Gibson would take a more constructive approach.” The spokesman’s response comes in part after reports surfaced last week intimating that Oksana’s injuries may have been self-inflicted – which she denies. The judge in their custody battle over eight-month-old Lucia is at least somewhat skeptical of the allegations, given the possible inconsistencies of the evidence and testimony from Mel’s wife, Robyn, that he never abused her in 28 years. However, other experts say her injuries are consistent with her story. “It is obvious not only from the photograph of Ms. Grigorieva, but from other evidence …that he struck her in the mouth and temple, that she sustained injuries as a result of his blows,” says a source close to the Gibson investigation. “The notion that her wounds were ‘self-inflicted’ is ridiculous and not credible. No legitimate, independent expert analyst could reasonably draw such a conclusion.” What do you think?
