Package bomb goes off at Houston oil executive’s home

Pipe bomb disguised as chocolates sends woman to hospital A seemingly anonymous gift left on the front porch of a Houston home owned by an oil company executive has the city's affluent population of oil profiteers on edge this weekend, after that package exploded and seriously injured a 62-year-old woman. Neighbors of the victim told an ABC News affiliate in Houston that the bomb was disguised as a box of chocolates in a gift bag, left on the home's doorstep around Thursday. Instead, it contained what authorities described as a pipe bomb carrying a load of thumb tacks and nails. When she opened the package on Friday evening, standing on her back porch around 6:30, it resulted in shrapnel embedded across the woman's face — injuries police said were not life-threatening. “It wasn't immediately clear whether the house was targeted, however, Eyewitness News found out the home is owned by an oil company executive,” the ABC affiliate further noted. Story continues below… Police refused to release the victim's name and none of the area media stated who the home belongs to or which oil company employs that individual. However, an examination of the homefront shown on local news reports correlated to images featured on Google Street View. A series of basic searches across a publicly available property database revealed the home's owner to be James Brock Moore III, president of Adams Resources Exploration Corporation (AREC). A separate name listed on the home's appraisal record, one Vennie Wolf, may or may not be the bomb's victim. The company brags on its Web site that it successfully “exploited” the “Austin chalk,” which is a geological formation that's proved tricky to drill under due to its fractured oil and gas stocks. Many companies have adopted advanced horizontal drilling techniques to conquer the chalk and penetrate even deeper into underground Texas mineral reserves. AREC says its areas of interest stretch along the Gulf coast from south Texas all the way to Alabama. No further details could be confirmed at time of this writing. Neighbors described the bomb's detonation as sounding similar to a transformer blowing out. One man, Dennis McCoy, who spoke to Houston's KHOU 11 News, claimed to have been asked by the woman if he'd left a box of candies on her doorstep. The box apparently carried a simple note saying, “Thank you.” Initial online speculation centered on whether the bombing may be a targeted hit on someone associated with embattled oil company BP, which is currently held as responsible for the worst environmental accident in humanity's history. A connection of that nature is at least not immediately apparent. Such speculation would appear to be driven only by police refusal to release the victim's name and local media's reticence to give a precise address. Local reports said that the package note also carried the woman's name, except misspelled. “I can't believe anyone would do something as terrible and tragic to a person like this lady,” Karen Gennity, a neighbor, told ABC 13. This video is from Houston's ABC 13, broadcast Saturday, July 10, 2010. http://rawstory.com/rs/2010/0711/package-bomb-houston-oil-company-executives-hom… added by: treewolf39

Bombs Kill At Least 64 In Synchronized Attacks In Uganda Capital During World Cup Finals | Updates | Photos

Bombers Kill at Least 50 (Including Foreigners) in Attacks in Uganda Capital By JOSH KRON Published: July 11, 2010 KAMPALA, Uganda — At least three bombs exploded Sunday in a synchronized attack on large gatherings of World Cup soccer fans watching the televised final on outdoor screens in this normally peaceful capital, turning a boisterous night of cheering into scenes of death and panic. The police and witnesses said more than 50 people were killed including some foreigners, among them at least one American. Marc Hofer/Associated Press Photo: A man attended to an injured woman after a bomb went off in a restaurant in Kampala’s Kabalagala district on Sunday. People carried an injured man at the Mulago Hospital in Kampala on Sunday. The bombs struck at 10:30 p.m. local time in the middle of the match between Spain and the Netherlands under way in South Africa, hitting a popular Ethiopian garden restaurant and a large rugby field in a different Kampala neighborhood where hundreds of people had massed to watch the game. Ugandan police officials said they suspected that the Shabab, a militant Islamic group in nearby Somalia, might have been behind the bombings. If so, it would be that group’s first attack outside Somalia. But the police said it was premature to draw conclusions. “We can’t rule anything out,” said Kale Kayihura, Uganda’s police inspector general, at the scene of one of the attacks. “This was obviously terrorism, from the way it was targeted at World Cup watchers in public places.” Joan Lockard, a spokeswoman at the American Embassy in Kampala, confirmed that at least one American was killed. She did not identify the victim. Local journalists at a major hospital said an unidentified number of American citizens were among the wounded. The Shabab group, one of the more fearsome militias vying for power in Somalia, bans music, dancing and sports, has links to Al Qaeda and has repeatedly threatened targets in Uganda as well as in Burundi because both countries contribute to the African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia, a lawless nation in the Horn of Africa. The police said other suspects were former rebels in the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo with connections to Uganda. The Ugandan capital is relatively safe and relaxed compared with other big cities in Africa, and such bombings are extremely rare. But the city turned tense and fearful early on Monday, as military vehicles and ambulances screeched through the streets and Kampala’s bars and discos emptied. At the Ethiopian restaurant that was attacked, an outdoor cafe with lawn tables known as the Ethiopian Village, soldiers and onlookers watched side by side as rescue crews extracted the dead and the wounded from the wreckage. The police said the bomb appeared to have been placed under a dining table where a group of foreigners, including some Americans, had been sitting. At least 15 people were killed in that blast, police officials witnesses said. “It was so loud,” said a woman named Mami, one of the owners of the restaurant, which had become popular with soccer fans because it showed the games on an outdoor screen. “I am so confused. My God. My God. My God.” At the rugby field where fans had gone to watch the final game on a large screen, police and witnesses said they counted at least 44 bodies. Lines of chairs had been blown apart. One middle-aged woman sat dead, her head hung back, blood dripping. “We were just watching football when the two bombs went off,” said Brian Bomakech, a Ugandan fan at the field. “So many people were hurt, so many people have died.” In Mogadishu, the Somalian capital, Sheik Yusuf Sheik Issa, a Shabab commander, was quoted by The Associated Press early Monday as saying he was happy with the attacks in Uganda. The sheik refused to confirm or deny any responsibility by the Shabab. “Uganda is one of our enemies,” The A.P. quoted him as saying. “Whatever makes them cry, makes us happy. May Allah’s anger be upon those who are against us.” The bombings came two days after another Shabab commander, Sheik Muktar Robow, called during Friday Prayer in Somalia for militants to attack sites in Uganda and Burundi. In Washington, a White House spokesman, Tommy Vietor, said late Sunday that the United States was prepared to provide assistance to Uganda. “The president is deeply saddened by the loss of life resulting from these deplorable and cowardly attacks, and sends his condolences to the people of Uganda and the loved ones of those who have been killed or injured,” he said. http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2010/07/12/world/12uganda1/12uganda1-hpMediu… added by: EthicalVegan

Justin Rego Calls The Bachelorette a Living Hell, is a Terrible Liar

Justin “R-Rated” Rego has left The Bachelorette. We all know why. After his cheating ways were exposed on Monday’s episode in Turkey, The Bachelorette star Ali Fedotowsky read Rego the riot act after speaking with a woman named Jessica Spillas, who claimed to be Rego’s girlfriend in Toronto. In response, he issued a vague comment denying nothing: “The producers of The Bachelorette took this experience that was supposed to be an amazing moment that I will never forget, and made it into a living hell for me,” the repulsive Rated R says in a statement posted on his Facebook page. Justin Rego will literally climb mountains for Ali Fedotowsky … and publicity . Rego, who says he told producers prior to traveling to Turkey that he “wanted off the show” and “wanted to get on the first plane home,” tried to make a swift exit. But he had no such luck as the crew followed his every move and eventually convinced him to speak on camera to Ali Fedotowsky one last time before he bolted. Still, Justin Rego tries to whine and play the victim: “I feel betrayed, manipulated and unfairly lied to by both the producers of The Bachelorette , and Jessica.” He says producers tried to “provoke

Lawrence Taylor Indicted For Rape, Sexual Assault

NFL Hall of Fame legend Lawrence Taylor has been formally indicted on rape charges following an the incident in which he allegedly hired a 16-year old prostitute. In addition to rape, a grand jury also indicted him for criminal sexual act, sexual abuse, endangering the welfare of a child, and patronizing a prostitute. Just sad. Taylor was arrested in May at a Holiday Inn in Suffern, N.Y., outside New York City. Prosecutors say he paid the girl $300 for sex. He was arrested that morning. Her pimp, Rasheed Davis, was also arrested. He denies having sex with her, but LT’s rape defense is expected to be as far-fetched as it us unpleasant to picture – he’s expected to say he merely masturbated. LT has fallen depressingly far since his football heyday . As she is underage and the victim of a potential sex crime, the identity of the Lawrence Taylor accuser , who he claims he thought was 18, has not been released. Legally, that matters not. She said that her pimp “left her no choice.” In response to the charges, his agent, Mark Lepselter says their legal team “made a strategic decision to not put any of our evidence in front of the grand jury.” “We look forward to presenting our evidence at the appropriate time.” We don’t even wanna see the evidence they plan on presenting.

Fat Joe Denies Sexual-Assault Claims

Rapper’s lawyer says woman making claims ‘posed as a fan’ and then made ‘false allegations.’ By Gil Kaufman Fat Joe Photo: Carlos Marino/ Getty Images A lawyer for rapper Fat Joe vehemently denied allegations by a Wisconsin woman who claimed she was a victim of sexual assault in the MC’s limousine on Sunday night. “Rapper Joseph Cartagena, known as Fat Joe, members of his entourage and security staff were briefly questioned by members of the Madison, Wisconsin, Police Department who were investigating false allegations made by a woman who initially posed as a fan and later claimed to be the victim of an assault after demanding money,” Joe’s lawyer, Dawn Florio, wrote in a statement, which was called “Groupie Pretender Targets Rapper for Shakedown.” The statement continues, “At no point did Mr. Cartagena or any member of his entourage assault or have any improper contact with the woman. It is truly unfortunate that false allegations such as these cause the public to doubt the claims of actual victims of sexual assaults.” Police are still investigating the claims made by an unnamed local 33-year-old woman who called police around 12:46 a.m. Monday to report the alleged incident. Joe was in town on Sunday night to perform a gig at the Orpheum Theater. The woman claimed that after the concert, she was invited to ride in the rapper’s Cadillac limousine with his entourage on the way to their hotel, according to an incident report from the Madison PD. She claimed that she was inappropriately touched while riding in the limo. Joe was detained for questioning, along with other unidentified members of his crew, but was not arrested, and he was released early Monday morning. No arrests have been made so far in the incident, and the investigation is ongoing. A spokesperson for the Madison Police Department said the alleged victim was scheduled to be interviewed a second time by police on Tuesday (June 22) but that no other information was available on the case at press time. Police said Monday they recovered an unspecified amount of marijuana and a set of digital scales. A person identifying herself as Cole’s fianc

Drunk Speeding Cop Back @ Work After DWI Homicide, No Charges Filed

His own police department says this detective was drunk and speeding when he killed a man, so why is he still working and still a detective? A victim's family wants to know if a Newark, New Jersey detective received special treatment. For more than a week, we have been trying to set up an interview with Newark's Police Director concerning our investigation. We've been ignored. We caught up with Newark detective Mark Hulse as he headed into work at this precinct on a recent morning. Back to work after six-month suspension. Back to work even though his own police department found him guilty of being drunk and speeding when, off-duty, he struck and killed a man named John Marques on this Newark street in July of 2008. The impact was so violent, some of Marques' limbs were severed. An internal police department memo that we obtained put Hulse's speed at 73 miles an hour in a 25 mile an hour zone and his blood alcohol content at .12. The legal limit is .08 So you're probably wondering, how did someone who is supposed to uphold the law and is found to have broken it by his own department, still on the job? And why wasn't Hulse criminally charged? WALLACE: “Do you think they didn't charge him because he was a cop?” LUCIA PIRES: “Yeah. Yeah. I think that. What other conclusion could I come to?” Pires, the victim's ex-wife, claims she and the couple's two teenage children were largely kept in the dark about the criminal investigation into the accident by the Essex County Prosecutor. “There was no communication with the family,” she said. The family says it was stunned to learn that months after the accident, a grand jury had failed to indict Officer Hulse. “There's no doubt in my mind that had it been anyone else they would currently be in jail for manslaughter. There is no doubt in my mind,” Pires said. “Anyone else would have been charged given those circumstances, but because he was a cop I basically think he got away with it.” Our investigation raises questions about how this case was handled from the very beginning. Police records show Officer Hulse, on his way back from a club at 3:00 a.m., ran from the accident scene to the nearby 3rd precinct allegedly to get help for the victim, but was it also to get protection for himself. He was never given a breathalyzer. “Somebody died, and it was 3 0'clock in the morning, and you're coming from the nightclub and no breathalyzer? If it were me or you, you know we'd have a breathalyzer done immediately,” Pires said. Hulse remained at the precinct for two and a half hours without giving any statement. Later, complaining of dizziness and other minor ailments, he went to the hospital. Blood wasn't drawn until more than four hours after the accident. His blood alcohol level then registered .058, but an alcohol expert consulted by the Prosecutor's office put the intoxication level at the time of the accident at .12, adding that it resulted in significant impairments. “Had it been me, or any normal citizen, I believe there would have been charges and they would have been put in jail,” Marques' son, Matthew, said. “I think it's wrong, I don't believe he should be back at work. I personally believe he should be in jail, serving time.” And why is he back at work? Officer Hulse wouldn't answer that question while we were at the precinct. A police spokesman showed up. He wouldn't answer that question either. We were told to put in a formal request to interview the Police Director. We did. No response. “He was speeding. He was drunk. He killed someone and he still has a job and pension in the state of New Jersey. Don't get it,” said Pires. The Essex County Prosecutor's Office told Eyewitness News it believes the criminal case was handled properly and it respects the grand jury's decision. The office did take a second look at this case after we contacted them. Sources tell us the FBI may be pursuing a civil rights investigation and we've learned there may be witnesses who have not yet come forward who were at the precinct the night of the accident. They may have possible information about a police cover-up. added by: Omnomynous

After Peruvian officials announced Wednesday that Joran van der Sloot is the prime suspect in the death of 21-year-old Stephany Flores in a Lima hotel, Chilean police confirmed he had entered their country two days earlier. Chilean Police Inspector Douglas Rodriguez in Arica told The Associated Press there was no record of van der Sloot leaving Chile and authorities were searching the country's dry, sparsely populated northern provinces for him. In Lima, police Gen. Cesar Guardia said at a news conference that the slain woman was found Wednesday in a room at a hotel where van der Sloot had been staying and that she had been seen with the suspect early Sunday, when she was killed. The killing occurred exactly five years after the May 30, 2005, disappearance of Alabama teen Natalee Holloway during a high school trip in Aruba, a Dutch Caribbean island where van der Sloot's late father was a prominent judge. Prosecutors said van der Sloot is still their main suspect in the case even though he was never charged. The Dutch government said Interpol issued an international arrest warrant for van der Sloot in the Peru killing. But Rodriguez, the Chilean police official, said authorities there had received only a request to locate the suspect, not an arrest warrant. Guardia, the Peruvian police general, said the 22-year-old Dutchman was in Peru for a poker tournament and appears with the dead woman in a video taken at a Lima casino early Sunday. The two were later seen entering the hotel by one of its employees about 5 a.m. and the Dutchman departed alone about four hours later, he said. “We have an interview with a worker at the hotel who says she saw this foreigner with the victim enter his room,” said Guardia. The woman's body was found face down on the hotel room floor Wednesday, abrasions on her face and body, and signs of trauma, Guardia said. He said she was clothed. Asked if she had been asphyxiated, Guardia said he was waiting for autopsy results on the cause of death. MORE ON LINK added by: 02
