Did Policemen Order Hit On Fellow Cop As Major Police Scandal Unfolds in Phoenix, AZ ?

http://oneminutelawyer.com/?p=20606 Phoenix, AZ—Is Phoenix police Sergeant Sean T. Drenth’s October 18. 2010 murder connected to this shocking scandal? Sgt. Drenth was murdered in an alley adjacent to a desolate State Capitol parking lot in an ongoing mystery. He was shot-gunned to death. Sgt Drenth was a suspect in this major Fraudulent Schemes and Theft case when he was killed. The Arizona Attorney General’s office today unsealed and announced the indictments of three current and one former Phoenix police officers. As many as 25 additional officers may get caught up in this career ending disaster that may bring lengthy prison terms. For those that don’t know Arizona sentences for crimes are usually triple and quadruple what the same offenses would bring in Illinois or California. This is a very sad day in the law enforcement community. From the Press Release issued today: (Phoenix, Ariz. – Nov. 18, 2010) Attorney General Terry Goddard today announced the indictment of three Phoenix Police Officers and a former member of the Phoenix Police Department on felony charges related to money they received for off-duty security work they allegedly did not perform. Former Phoenix Officer George Emil Contreras, 45, was indicted on four felony counts that include fraud, illegal control of an enterprise and theft, for actions he took during his employment with the department performing off-duty security services for multiple clients. Also indicted on theft charges related to off-duty work they were hired to perform were three current members of the Phoenix Police Department: Sgt. Benjamin Hugh Sywarungsymun, 35, Officer Steven Paul Peck, 40, and Officer Aaron J. Lentz, 30. Contreras was a Phoenix Police Officer for 18 years before he resigned in 2008. While employed by the department, he also served as an off-duty work coordinator, out of the South Mountain Precinct, for off-duty jobs for the alleged business victims: the Cotton Center Townhomes at 48th Street and Broadway, Laron Incorporated, Arizona Materials, and Eisenberg Properties, all in Phoenix. The indictment alleges that from December 2005 through December 2007, Contreras committed fraud and theft on the businesses by submitting false documents to them in the form of invoices in advance of the work to be performed and accepting pay for the full hours of work indicated in the invoices, even though he did not work the full hours for which he was paid. Contreras is alleged to also have formed and used a business called Raptor Services to invoice and collect payment from the victim businesses. Sgt. Sywarungsymun, Officer Peck, and Officer Lentz are also alleged to have committed theft by accepting pay for hours of off-duty security which they did not perform, as coordinated by Contreras. The alleged business victim that suffered the largest loss was the Cotton Center Townhomes, which involved a security job contracted with the Phoenix Police Department by three homeowners associations to help reduce crime in an area with a high volume of calls for police service, requiring two officers and a marked patrol car. Contreras, as the coordinator, assigned a large majority of shifts to himself, as well as the other officers listed in the indictment. Contreras is alleged to have committed thefts in excess of $9,000, Lentz in excess of $2,000, Sywarungsymun in excess of $1,800, and Peck in excess of $1,700, all felony level thefts. Total losses alleged in the indictment are in excess of $16,000. added by: keithponder

Autistic kid gets Penis Tattoo By Australian "Artist" Leads To Charges

I don't know why the Huffington post has him as an artist, when he doesn't have a license to tattoo people. The jerk smiled and has admitted to doing it because he was upset at the kid. ******************************************************************************************** A 25-year-old Australian found himself the victim of the worst kind of prank — one conducted by a tattoo artist with a particularly raunchy sense of humor. Despite having requested some fairly harmless ink — a yin-yang symbol and some dragons — the man returned home to discover a 16-inch penis and an obscene, albeit misspelled, slogan “implying that he was gay” inscribed on his back, the Ipswich Queensland Times reports. “When he got home he showed it to the person he lives with and she said: 'I don't think it's the tattoo you were after,'” Queensland detective Paul Malcolm told the Times. And as if being permanently marked with a giant phallus on his back wasn't enough, the victim was also allegedly punched and thrown out of the studio by the 21-year-old amateur artist after the tattoo was completed, according to the AFP. Upon discovering the prank, the victim immediately contacted the police. The former friend who allegedly etched the tattoo is due in court Nov. 15, and has been charged with two counts of assault. He potentially faces additional public safety charges as he was not a licensed tattoo artist. On top of the inevitable ridicule, the victim reportedly faces a bill of between $600 to $2,000 to have the tattoo removed. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/10/27/australian-artist-charged_n_774608.html added by: KSirys

Justin Bieber Joins Ranks Of Pop Stars With ‘CSI’ Cameos

Bieber’s season-premiere debut follows guest turns by Diddy, Taylor Swift and more. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber in “CSI” Photo: CBS Justin Bieber is making his “CSI” debut on Thursday night (September 23), and while it remains to be seen whether the teen idol can pull out an Emmy-worthy performance, his appearance on the show continues the series’ tradition of casting marquee names for guest spots. Taylor Swift got to live out her dream in March 2009, when she played Haley , a girl found dead outside of a motel. While Swift didn’t have very many lines, the pop singer did display some chops onscreen and got to indulge her morbid acting fantasies. “I’ve always joked around with my record label and my mom and everybody — all my friends know that my dream is to die on ‘CSI,’ ” she said last year. “I’ve always wanted to be one of the characters on there that they’re trying to figure out what happened to.” But not everyone plays the victim. When Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz made a cameo on the show in March 2009, they hit up the East Coast version of the show on “CSI: NY.” The Wentzes went dark for their parts as Chester Byron and Lila Wickfield, playing a young couple entangled in the world of drug-dealing. “It’s easy to play passionate roles with the person you love,” Wentz said about hooking up with his wife onscreen. “There’s nothing weird about it when you love the person.” Diddy worked the opposite end of the legal spectrum when he was cast as a defense attorney on “CSI: Miami” in December 2008. Describing his character as a “nemesis” to David Caruso’s he explained, “I wanted to keep on studying and learning; working with great actors, directors, great shows. I’ve never done a television drama. I’ve always wanted to play a lawyer. I didn’t want to play, like, a rap artist or a criminal.” And that brings it back to Bieber, who’ll make his first of two appearances this week as troubled kid Jason McCann on “CSI” (the second will air in February). He’ll certainly be showing fans a side of him they haven’t seen. “He’s a troubled young man, raised in the foster-care system, whose hard-luck life has left him scarred and angry,” executive producer Carol Mendelsohn told MTV News last month. “When we first meet Jason, we meet him at a community center where he’s giving a testimonial in honor of a man who takes Jason and his older brother in when they had no one else, and that man is now in jail and Jason’s brother is out for revenge and looking for payback.” Are you planning to watch Justin’s “CSI” debut? ABC Touts O’Donnell’s Witchcraft Comments: Will Remarks Continue to ‘Haunt’ Candidate?

Good Morning America’s George Stephanopoulos on Monday asserted that the White House wants to “deliver” the message that the Tea Party is too extreme. He then highlighted 11-year-old comments, asking Representative Mike Pence about Christine O’Donnell’s past comments on witchcraft: “She says it was just a little high school fun. Is that enough?” In a 1999 appearance on Politically Incorrect, O’Donnell told host Bill Maher that she dabbled in witchcraft and dated a Satanist. An ABC graphic hyped, “Witchcraft Talk Haunts Candidate: O’Donnell Asked to Explain Remarks.” Playing up a Republican split, Stephanopoulos cited an unlikely expert, Karl Rove, as he interviewed Pence: “You heard Karl Rove say that Christine O’Donnell is going to have to explain the witchcraft comments.” On September 15 , the GMA anchor pointed out that Rove criticized the “nutty” things the Delaware senatorial nominee has said in the past. The engineer of two presidential victories for George W. Bush isn’t often extolled on Good Morning America. Stephanopoulos, a former top aide to Michael Dukakis and Bill Clinton,  recited more Democratic talking points for the midterm election: STEPHANOPOULOS: But, as you know, Congressman, speaking of the message, you know that the Democrats and the White House are going to try to take the position of Christine O’Donnell, Joe Miller from Alaska and say that it’s signs of a radical takeover in the Republican Party. Christine O’Donnell also says that integrating women into the military institutes will cripple the readiness of our defense. Joe Miller up in Alaska says that unemployment benefits are unconstitutional. Are those provisions you’re willing to run by? A transcript of the September 20 segment, which aired at 7:09am EDT, follows: GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: But, the message is what the White House wants to deliver in this election season. Thanks, Jake. And for more on all this, we’re joined by the man who beat out Sarah Palin and other Republican stars at the Values Voter presidential straw poll this weekend, Indiana Congressman Mike Pence, The chairman of the House Republican Conference. Congratulations on your victory, Congressman. REP. MIKE PENCE: Thank you, George. STEPHANOPOULOS: I know that after that you said you wanted to focus on getting back to the House for Republicans. But is it fair to conclude that your victory Saturday increases your chances that you’ll run for President? PENCE: Well, look, I was very honored and, frankly, humbled as we walked out of the Purdue/Ball State game on Saturday and received word about that affirmation from folks who attended the Values Voters Summit in Washington. But our focus, George, and I think so the focus of every American who is tired of runaway federal spending, borrowing, bailouts and takeovers needs to be on November 2nd. You know, we’ll let the future take care of itself. But, for now, the reason I’m here in Michigan today- gonna be campaigning with Tim Wahlberg down in Battle Creek.. The reason we’re traveling all across the country the American people won back the people’s house for the common sense and common values of this nation. STEPHANOPOULOS: Okay. So we’ll have you back in November when you’re ready to make the announcement. I’ll invite you back then . But, let’s talk a little bit about the midterms and that victory last week by Christine O’Donnell and all the comments coming out over the weekend. You heard Karl Rove say that Christine O’Donnell is going to have to explain the witchcraft comments. She says it was just a little high school fun. Is that enough? PENCE: Well, look, I think that’s up to the voters in Delaware to decide. And certainly, Christine O’Donnell, you know, has an obligation to explain those public statements. But, you know, welcome to the silly season, George. I mean, suddenly now, Bill Maher is the vanguard of religion in America. [Laughs.] Come on. You know, Christine O’Donnell’s success or the success of Joe Miller in Alaska or people like Marco Rubio in Florida is less about that the messenger, it’s more about the message. What’s bringing everyday Americans into the streets, out to Tea Party meetings and town hall meetings is the realization that our government has run off the rails. And the American people recognize they’ve got to take the reins back in the government. And they’re looking for men and women of courage who are willing to stand up and take on the establishment in Washington, D.C. And I expect, come November 2nd, those issues and that message is going to carry the day. And not all of this back and forth. STEPHANOPOULOS: But, as you know, Congressman, speaking of the message, you know that the Democrats and the White House are going to try to take the position of Christine O’Donnell, Joe Miller from Alaska and say that it’s signs of a radical takeover in the Republican Party. Christine O’Donnell also says that integrating women into the military institutes will cripple the readiness of our defense. Joe Miller up in Alaska says that unemployment benefits are unconstitutional. Are those provisions you’re willing to run by? PENCE [Laughs]: Nice try, George. Look- STEPHANOPOULOS: Well, what’s the answer? PENCE: Look, look, I’ve been traveling around the country for candidates and I’ve attended Tea Party rallies. Did one about a week ago in Washington D.C. with tens of thousands of Americans. But, in my town hall meeting two years ago, people poured into my home community in Columbus, Indiana because they’re fed up. They’re fed up with runaway federal spending in both political parties. And I think they’re going to see through this typical, nitpicking, and we’re going to pull things out of context. And we’re going to try and put people in the worst possible light. They’re going to say, “Look, just bring us men and women that are willing to go to Washington, D.C., put our fiscal house in order, get this economy moving, respect the common values of the American people.” And I think that’s going to carry the day on Election Day. STEPHANOPOULOS: So, that’s my last question. We only have ten seconds left. Bottom line, do you think Republicans win back the House? PENCE: I think they have a profound opportunity. But it’s up to the American people that cherish conservative values, to do everything they can between now and November 2nd to win back the people’s house for the common sense and common values of the majority of this country.

Networks Ignore Fired Koran Burner, Defended Teacher Who Compared Bush, Hitler

Derek Fenton, the man who burned pages of the Koran while protesting the planned Ground Zero Mosque in New York City,  lost his job  at NJTransit because of his demonstration. The network news outlets couldn’t care less. None of the networks – ABC, CBS, NBC – have mentioned Fenton’s name, according to a review of show transcripts. Maybe they spent all their free speech-debate interest back in 2006 when they hurried to defend a Colorado teacher who was suspending after he compared President Bush to Adolf Hitler. Jay Bennish made headlines in March 2006 after one of his students released a tape of Bennish comparing Bush to Hitler and declaring that America was the world’s most violent nation. Bennish was suspended – placed on paid leave – while officials reviewed his conduct. (He was eventually reinstated.) All three networks defended him by characterizing his comments as free speech. On ABC “Good Morning America” March 3, Bill Weir characterized the controversy as a “battle over free speech.” Reporter Dan Harris said the incident “provoked a national debate about academic freedom.” The CBS “Early Show” on March 3 highlighted students protesting Bennish’s suspension, during which they chanted, “Freedom of speech, let him teach.” Co-host Harry Smith also downplayed Bennish’s comments, suggesting he “was suspended for saying that some people compared President Bush to Adolf Hitler,” even though Bennish himself had made the comparison. On NBC’s “Today” show March 7, co-host Matt Lauer interviewed Bennish and portrayed him as the victim of a conservative smear job. “They basically shopped it around to conservative media outlets, and when they finally released it to one, it created an uproar,” Lauer said of the student who released the tape. “And on the tape you can hear [student] Sean Allen asking you questions that seem to be egging you on a little bit. Do you feel you were set up?” Even President Bush jumped into the fray, saying that “freedom for people to express themselves must be protected.”  The near-universal defense of Bennish’s comment was that he was trying to provoke debate among his students. “His whole goal is to fire these kids up,” his attorney David Lane, said at the time, “and you have to take some extreme positions to fire these kids up. Let them debate it.” Yet today, none of the networks have been eager to characterize Fenton’s protest as “free speech” or to suggest, as some politicians and civil liberties advocates have, that Fenton was wrongly fired. “So long as his actions, however misguided, took place on his own time, and he was not acting in his capacity as a representative of NJTransit but as an American exercising his constitutional rights, then the agency is clearly in the wrong,” New Jersey State Sen.  Raymond Lesniak  said.  Like this article? Man found guilty of aggravated rape

A man who was a minor himself when the incident occurred was convicted this week of raping another child. A jury found Tony Keith Straub Jr., who is now 23 years old, guilty of aggravated rape. According to the report filed by the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office, Straub was arrested in July 2008 and was indicted on the aggravated rape charge the next month. However, it is believed the actual rape occurred sometime between 2002 and 2004. George Bonnett, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office, said according to the report, Straub was an acquaintance of the victim’s family and he was taking the small girl door-to-door to sell items as part of a school fund-raiser when he brought her into the woods near her home and raped her. The little girl did not tell her parents about the rape until several years later in 2008. While the exact date of the rape was not determined, it is believed that the victim was 6 years old at the time. Aggravated rape of someone under the age of 12 carries a mandatory life in prison. http://www.slidellsentry.com/articles/2010/08/27/news/doc4c76e217099a6933899423…. added by: Radical_Centrist

Drug War Sends Bullets Over Border Into El Paso City Hall

;_ylt=Ami0C1nq6Jgkv1JsabOnCWW9IxIF;_ylu=X3oDMTNlcDNodDVnBGFzc2V0A2FwLzIwMTAwODI1L3VzX2RydWdfd2FyX3N0cmF5X2J1bGxldHMEY2NvZGUDbW9zdHBvcHVsYXIEY3BvcwM1BHBvcwM1BHNlYwN5bl90b3Bfc3RvcmllcwRzbGsDZHJ1Z3dhcnNlbmRz The first bullets struck El Paso's city hall at the end of a work day. The next ones hit a university building and closed a major highway. Shootouts in the drug war along the U.S.-Mexico border are sending bullets whizzing across the Rio Grande into one of the nation's safest cities, where authorities worry it's only a matter of time before someone gets hurt or killed. At least eight bullets have been fired into El Paso in the last few weeks from the rising violence in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, one of the world's most dangerous places. And all American police can do is shrug because they cannot legally intervene in a war in another country. The best they can do is warn people to stay inside. “There's really not a lot you can do right now,” El Paso County Sheriff Richard Wiles said. “Those gun battles are breaking out everywhere, and some are breaking out right along the border.” Police say the rounds were not intentionally fired into the U.S. But wildly aimed gunfire has become common in Juarez, a sprawling city of shanty neighborhoods that once boomed with manufacturing plants. It's ground zero in Mexico's relentless drug war. More than 6,000 people have been killed there since 2008, when the Sinaloa and Juarez cartels started battling each other and Mexican authorities for control of the city and smuggling routes into the U.S. Nationwide, more than 28,000 people have been killed since President Felipe Calderon launched his offensive against the cartels shortly after taking office in December 2006. Until now, communities on the U.S. side of the border have been largely shielded from the violence raging just across the river. But the recent incidents are the first time that live ammunition has landed in American territory. On Saturday, as gunmen and Mexican authorities exchanged gunfire in Juarez, police in El Paso shut down several miles of border highway. Border Patrol spokesman Doug Mosier said his agency asked for the closure — a first since the drug war erupted — “in the interest of public safety.” No one was injured on the U.S. side, but one bullet came across the Rio Grande, crashed through a window and lodged in an office door frame at the University of Texas at El Paso. Police are also investigating reports that another errant round shattered a window in a passing car. Witnesses at a nearby charity said at least one bullet hit their building, too. El Paso police spokesman Darrel Petry said authorities have only confirmed the single bullet found at the university, but it is possible that several other shots flew across the border. “As a local municipality, we are doing everything we can,” Petry said. “Looking where we're at, the community we live in, that's all we've got. It's the reality of life here in El Paso for right now.” Officers say the types of bullets used in the drug war can travel more than a mile before falling to the ground. In Saturday's shooting, the bullet that hit the campus building may have flown just under a mile before lodging in a door jam. Back in June, at least seven shots fired from Juarez flew more than half a mile before hitting City Hall. In some places, El Paso is separated from Juarez by little more than a few yards of riverbed. Andrew Kunert was napping Saturday when police started banging on his door at an apartment building just feet from the border. He said officers with high-powered rifles slung across their chests warned him to stay inside and away from windows until the shooting stopped. The rat-a-tat-tat of gunfire to the south is nothing new, but bullets coming north is a worrisome new development, Kunert said. “About once a week, you can hear gunfire,” he said. He worries about the children who live at the Old Fort Bliss apartment building and routinely play outside when gunmen are trading shots across the river. At the Rescue Mission of El Paso, kitchen manager Bill Cox said several bullets hit a pair of old silos on the charity's property, which is down a hillside from the university campus. Volunteers and homeless people coming to the mission for food or other help could easily be in the line of fire, he said. “Someone can be walking down the street out here and be hit,” Cox said. added by: Omnomynous

Marines Find 72 Bodies In Northern Mexico

;_ylt=Amd0ZcvVQDBWMAalHVREySZH2ocA;_ylu=X3oDMTM3Z2d0OGZxBGFzc2V0A2FwLzIwMTAwODI1L2x0X2RydWdfd2FyX21leGljbwRjY29kZQNtb3N0cG9wdWxhcgRjcG9zAzMEcG9zAzMEc2VjA3luX3RvcF9zdG9yaWVzBHNsawNtYXJpbmVzZmluZDc- Mexican marines have found the bodies of 72 people at a rural location in northern Mexico, following a shootout with suspected drug cartel gunmen that left one marine and three suspects dead. The find appears to be the largest drug-cartel body dumping ground found in Mexico since President Felipe Calderon launched an offensive against drug trafficking in 2006. Mexican drug cartels often use vacant lots or mine shafts to dump the bodies of executed rivals or kidnap victims. The Navy announced the discovery Wednesday, but did not give details on the victim's identities, who had killed them, or whether the bodies had been buried. It was also unclear whether the 58 men and 14 women had been killed at the same time, or separately. added by: Omnomynous
