Lana Del Rey Talks Tigers, Tames Critics With Born To Die

‘I always feel uncomfortable spending anyone’s money, but I really did want the tigers,’ Del Rey says of video for title track. By James Montgomery Lana Del Ray Photo: MTV News Chances are, if you’ve ventured anywhere near a blog in the past six months, you not only know who Lana Del Rey is, but you’ve probably already formed your opinion about her. Based mainly on a pair of majestic, maudlin singles — “Video Games” and “Blue Jeans” — not to mention some rather rampant speculation on her background, Del Rey has been nothing if not a lightning rod, and now she’s rode that, uh, attention to a major-label deal with Interscope, who will release her Born To Die album at the end of the month. But for an artist who has been the subject of so much discussion, Del Rey remains strangely silent when it comes to her critics, the folks who like to bring up points like “authenticity” and “paying your dues.” Though you get the feeling she’s growing tired of keeping her mouth shut. “I don’t agree [with it] … it’s a f—ing personal thing, in terms of whether people like me or not, it has to do with my personality getting in the way of the music,” she told MTV News. “I personally don’t like drama of any sort … I just think it’s reflective of the times we live in, and have been living in since the dawn of humanity. People love terrible news, they love when things go wrong, and they like to see people going off the tracks and people fighting, because it’s exciting, and life is f—ing boring.” And that’s an odd thing to say, especially considering that, in recent months, Del Rey’s life has been anything but boring. She’s been whisked around the world to promote Born To Die, she’s been the subject of countless magazine spreads, and this weekend, she’ll perform on her biggest stage to date: “Saturday Night Live.” And through it all, she’s tried very hard to keep the focus squarely on her music, a task that grows increasingly difficult by the day. “The goal is definitely just to sort of try to re-create myself in song form, that was really my only ambition in this whole thing. I mean, I’ve been making music for a long time, but it was really only ever to please myself,” she said. “I really write because I love to write and I sing because I love to sing … and I think the way I make music is different from the way some people make music, in the way that I write for myself. “I started working [on Born To Die ] with this kid from London, Justin Parker; he sort of wrote a lot of the chords on the record. And then I was looking for a producer to tie everything together, sonically, and Emile [Haynie, who’s worked with the likes of Kanye West and Eminem] was perfect, because, musically, we’re on the same path,” she continued. “We love mixing the light and the dark together, and I was in love with his beats … he understood what I meant when I was talking about wanting a mix of a sound similar to Thomas Newman’s ‘American Beauty’ score, mixed with a Springsteen, summertime sadness feel. And everything came together … Sonically, I always knew exactly what I wanted.” And that focus extended to the big-budget video for the album’s title track, a gorgeous, gigantic thing Del Rey shot in Paris with director Yoann Lemoine. It sprung from a treatment she penned, and doesn’t skimp when it comes to scenery, sex appeal and, of course, seriously hormonal tigers … all courtesy of the good folks at Interscope, of course. “I always feel uncomfortable spending anyone’s money, but I really did want the tigers, just because of what they symbolize to me, and just visually, they’re so striking,” she laughed. “I always like the vision of a girl in a white nightgown with two majestic tigers. [In one scene], I was sitting on the throne first, and then I had to leave the room and then the tiger was filmed right by the throne, and then spliced in … Tigers and women can’t be in the same room, even if the tiger is a female, because of the pheromones.” And so, Del Rey is quickly learning that acrimony sort of comes with the territory these days. And as she moves forward as a major artist, she’s willing to trade a few nasty comments for the opportunity to create videos (and albums) that are uniquely her . It’s been a rollercoaster ride just to get to this point, and Del Rey is determined to enjoy her lofty new perch … no matter what her detractors have to say. “I’m a very happy person. I feel really at peace with my life and where it’s been for the last long time, really,” she said. “I’m grateful for my life, I’m grateful for being able to make music, and for everyone around me. So, yeah, overall, I feel happy.” Are you excited for Born to Die ? Let us know in the comments below! Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Lana Del Ray Related Artists Lana Del Rey

Is Spielberg’s Fox Series Terra Nova the Perfect Jurassic Park/Lost Hybrid?

The trailer for Steven Spielberg’s new Fox sci-fi serial Terra Nova , where groups of people travel to prehistoric times to save the overcrowded Earth of 2149, is filled with touches of the director’s old favorites: Jurassic Park ‘s wonderment creeps up, E.T ‘s innocence plays a part, and maybe a touch of the non-Spielbergian Lost sneaks in as well. Check the trailer after the jump.

Do Video Games Deserve To Be in the Same Artistic Category as Films?

Something tells me that when you were playing Nintendo Duck Hunt back in ’87, you never thought to yourself: “This is a true work of art that enhances the public good.” Nearly 25 years later though, that is exactly what the U.S. National Endowment for the Arts is saying about Duck Hunt ‘s sophisticated spawn by allowing the medium to be recognized as a legitimate art form that deserves federal funding.

‘My Life As Liz’ Star Reveals Link To ‘American Idol’ Winner Kelly Clarkson

‘Idol Party Live’ guest Liz Lee went to same high school as Clarkson and says ‘there’s a trophy case dedicated to her.’ By Kelley L. Carter Liz Lee Photo: MTV News So would Liz Lee, the star of MTV’s popular series “My Life as Liz” ever audition for “American Idol”? Not a chance. Lee was a guest on MTV News’ brand-new weekly interactive online series, “Idol Party Live,” which kicked off on Thursday night (March 3) after the live results telecast of “American Idol” . The reality-TV star, who joined our “Idol” expert/host Jim Cantiello and EW.com “Idol” writer Annie Barrett, said she’d be too terrified to try out. But Lee made an interesting revelation on the live stream. The Fort Worth, Texas, native hails from the same small town as season-one “Idol” winner Kelly Clarkson. “Kelly Clarkson went to my high school. I didn’t know her. I think my sister was friends with a friend who knew her. They’re all friends with someone who’s acquainted with her. There’s a whole trophy case dedicated to her,” Lee said. And who are Lee’s favorites so far this season? She’s leaning toward the quirky, nerdy types, she said, but has her eye on one contestant in particular: Casey Abrams . “I like the Seth Rogen-y, quirky, [guy],” she said. “Like, I would hang out with this guy. I would play video games with this guy. He’s like my friend Sully. He’s a Sully. It’s like a complete transformation. He’s cute, nerdy, quirky Seth Rogen, and then he turns into this Antonio Banderas, attractive, mysterious thing. It’s incredible — on a dime.” “Idol Party Live” airs every Thursday at 10 p.m. ET, immediately following the “American Idol” results show, and Cantiello and a special celeb guest will be on-hand to do a post-wrap on all things “Idol.” They’ve even promised some karaoke! Justin Bieber’s 17th Birthday Bash: What Would You Plan?

Event planners imagine what kind of party they’d throw the superstar. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Gilbert Carrasquillo/ Getty Images Justin Bieber is about to reach another milestone in his life: On Tuesday (February 29), the teen star turns 17. Already, he’s had hit albums and singles, a world tour and a successful concert documentary, so he definitely has a reason to celebrate. As he gears up for the fun, MTV News asked some party planners to weigh in on what kind of bash they would throw for the pop superstar. “I think, knowing that he’s such a fan of purple, I would create a purple Willy Wonka fantasy party,” said Bruce Starr, who works at BMF Media Group in New York. “I think we’d do it in L.A. on a studio lot and have the Oompa Loompas in purple. We’d recreate this extravagant fantasy world.” Starr said he’d have a female DJ on the decks, but also would have some musical surprises up his sleeve. “We’d have a surprise stage, and without telling him, work with his friends and have them do surprise sets for him,” he explained. “The party would have just friends and family, about 250 or 300 or 400 people tops — really intimate.” There would even be a fan element to the party. “I think we would do huge screens for all the people who couldn’t be there. We’d have surprise music videos from them, and throughout the candy land, there’d be screens with tweets from his fans,” he added. Taylor Choi, event consultant for Gansevoort Hotel Group, explained that she’d have the perfect Big Apple hot spot for the party. “For him, I would do something more fun and exciting,” she mused. “I would do more like bowling or video games, some sort of 3-D type party with more technology-type stuff for him.” So, what types of social media would that include? “A social-media kiosk where people can take photos,” she explained. “I would do karaoke and do something more fun and interactive. I would have a fun DJ and a fun live performance because a performance would be fun.” As for the venue, Choi said: “If he was in New York, I would throw it in the Gansevoort Park Avenue where we could do a 3-D installation. We can do a performance over the pool. We would deck it out for him with three floors. I’d serve cupcakes, hot dogs, burgers. “I would have like 200 of his closest friends,” she added. “I would definitely do 3-D stuff. He’d have fun with a small group of friends: private, intimate, nothing too crazy. Have his friends perform a song for him.” While it seems these planners would throw elaborate bashes for the star, Bieber recently revealed that he’s hoping for a low-key affair. “I only have, like, four days, so I’m just going to relax, because I start my world tour starting on [March 4] — so just going to mentally prepare and just relax,” Bieber explained. “No birthday bash. … Hopefully my grandparents will be out here, and I’ll be able to spend time, a little bit, with them. My grandma makes the best cheesecake — cherry cheesecake. She made that for my 13th birthday.” How do you think Justin Bieber should celebrate his 17th birthday? Tell us your ideas below! Stay With It: 10-Year-Old Is Too Caught Up In His Video Game And Falls Off The Train Platform

These kids and their damn video games…SMH A 10-year-old boy who was playing a video game on a Sony PlayStation Portable was so engrossed that he stepped off a subway platform and fell onto the tracks. The incident, which happened in Milan, Italy, was caught on video (shown here). An off-duty policeman jumped onto the tracks to rescue the boy. “I just reacted with instinct,” explained the rescuer, 23-year-old Alessandro Micalizzi, according to the Daily Mail UK. “I saw him go over and he was lying on the track so I just jumped down, grabbed him and carried him to the platform. He was crying and shocked but other than that he was OK.” Though there was no oncoming train, there was one due within a minute, so real peril was never too far off. “It was only afterwards when I heard the other passengers clapping and cheering that I stopped and thought about what I had done and my heart was in my throat,” said Micalizzi in the Daily Mail.
