Bruno Mars’ VMA-Nominated ‘Grenade’: Road To Video Of The Year

Clip also nominated for Best Male Video and Best Pop Video at Sunday’s 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. By Jocelyn Vena Bruno Mars in his “Grenade” music video Photo: Elektra Records For Bruno Mars ‘ deeply personal breakup track “Grenade,” the pop crooner hooked up with a man who truly understands dark images: Australian music video director Nabil Elderkin, who has cooked up clips for the likes of Kanye West, Frank Ocean, Diddy and will.i.am. The duo created a clip that mirrors the heartache of the song, where Mars sings about loving someone who won’t love him back. The video dropped in November and has racked up hundreds of millions of views online. It’s also up for three Moonmen at Sunday’s 2011 MTV Video Music Awards , including Best Male Video, Best Pop Video and Video of the Year. For those who have yet to check out the video, Mars pines over a lovely young lady. To prove his love for her, he puts on his Sunday best and drags his piano across Los Angeles, meeting up with unsavory characters along the way. When he does finally get to his beloved’s house, he sees that she is hooking up with another fellow. Heartbroken, he drags his piano away from the home, up one very difficult hill and ends up at a railroad track. Does a completely devastated Mars get hit by the train? Well, that’s the video’s great, deep, dark mystery. “It was my concept,” the singer told MTV News earlier this month. “I said, ‘I want to drag a piano.’ I got my friend Nabil to come direct it, and it was a risk because I still hear jokes to this day like, ‘What the hell you doing dragging a piano?’ ” he said. “But it’s my art, so shut up!” Mars, who hit the stage with B.o.B at the 2010 VMAs , is pretty stoked about having the video make the final cut as one of the nominees for Video of the Year . “I grew up watching VMAs. I know every performance,” Mars said. “Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been watching MTV VMAs, and when we got the phone call saying that my video was up for Video of the Year, that’s the big-boy award.” Mars is also up for a Best Choreography VMA for his much-more-fun “The Lazy Song” clip. He’s also set to take the stage as one of Sunday night’s performers . The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Chris Brown’s VMA-Nominated ‘Look At Me Now’: Frame By Frame

‘Seeing them together performing was so cool live,’ director Colin Tilley says of clip featuring Busta Rhymes and Lil Wayne. By Jocelyn Vena Chris Brown in the “Look at Me Now” video Photo: Jive Chris Brown’s eye-catching clip for “Look at Me Now” is up for two Video Music Awards this year. It’s battling it out for Best Collaboration thanks to assists by Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes, as well as Best Hip-Hop Video . The video’s neon-colored visuals came courtesy of director Colin Tilley, who has worked with Brown on five other music videos. When MTV News sat down with Tilley to take us through the clip frame by frame in anticipation of Sunday’s 2011 Video Music Awards, he explained that the video, much like the song, was a collaboration that was as fun to watch on set as it is for fans to watch the finished product. The visuals include lots of graffiti artwork, some of which was created by Brown himself. “Chris actually did a lot of pieces, like custom pieces, before we even did the video,” Tilley recalled. “We came in there a day early and he did some really cool custom pieces.” The one non-graffiti piece that really stands out in the video is the cage that Brown hangs out in. It went through some changes before it became the tricked-out version that appears in the video. “The birdcage, it started off more like a ‘Thunderdome’-type thing, but once we got the gold cage and we put the speakers and the gold mask, it just kind of created this really awesome thing,” he said. “This dance routine was crazy,” he continued about the next scene. “When I was cutting the video, I was having a hard time trying to get as much dance as possible … it was so good from start to finish. It was well-choreographed.” The real focus of the video is the stars themselves, who impressed Tilley. “We have Busta, Lil Wayne and Chris Brown together, all on top of an ambulance, with just so much stuff going on around them,” he said. “The ambulance’s roof actually caved in after the shoot was over.” Busta and Brown had a certain magic in their scenes. “Seeing them together performing was so cool live,” he said. “Busta Rhymes, seeing him perform this for the first time, I was shocked — he literally does not breathe [as he raps].” “Lil Wayne, of course, we had him perform in front of the DeLorean,” Tilley added. “We just put all these other things around him portraying that energy … when he steps on set, his energy is so crazy.” All in all, the video was really about these three guys coming together and getting crazy in the clip. “It was an amazing collaboration,” he said. “They were all really cool. They were down to make something amazing, and seeing them work together was really cool. I think everything was so on point with us.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live on Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV Drops At Midnight After VMAs

Weezy’s VMA performance and nominations lead up to the long-awaited release on Sunday night. By Alvin Blanco Lil Wayne Photo: Clinton Gilders/ FilmMagic Lil Wayne is going to dabble in a little midnight madness. Already scheduled to perform at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, Weezy has just announced that he’ll also be dropping his highly anticipated new album, Tha Carter IV, at midnight, right after the show. “I am extremely excited to be the first artist to utilize such an amazing idea. I hope that I can open the door for others,” Lil Wayne said in a press statement. The YMCMB rapper’s latest will be released digitally via iTunes, Amazon and other legal MP3 download destinations at 12 a.m. on August 29. Those still dedicated to physical CDs need not worry since the album will be in retail stores later that Monday. The release of Tha Carter IV will be the capstone to a big night for Weezy, who is also up for Moonmen in the Best Hip-Hop Video and Best Collaboration categories. And despite Wayne’s skateboarding accident over the weekend (he tweeted that he needed nine stitches for a gash over his eye), he is sure to take the Nokia Theatre stage by storm this week. “The MTV Video Music Awards are one of the most watched and respected shows in the industry,” Ronald “Slim” Williams, CEO of Cash Money Records, said in a statement. “Wayne is one of the most respected and prolific artists in the industry. By pairing the release of Tha Carter IV with the VMAs, it will certainly add to the overall anticipation and excitement for fans everywhere for what will surely be an unforgettable evening.” With Jay-Z and Kanye West throwing a wrench into traditional album-release strategies with their Watch the Throne project, Lil Wayne has chosen to make his own release an event by coinciding with another. “Lil Wayne continues to change the game; this time with a new release strategy that demonstrates the power of the VMAs to grab the attention of music fans,” MTV President Stephen Friedman said. “After our millions of viewers experience the VMAs, they can go online at midnight and download the album they’ve all been waiting for.” Tha Carter IV ‘s latest single is “She Will” and will feature appearances from, T-Pain, Tech N9ne, Rick Ross, John Legend, Jadakiss, Nas and Busta Rhymes, among others. The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Lady Gaga’s Meat Dress: Peek Behind The Scenes At Last Year’s VMAs

On ‘VMAs Revealed’ MTV staffers recall the reaction backstage when Gaga unveiled her beefy couture. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga at the 2010 Video Music Awards Photo: Getty Images The Video Music Awards have a long history of outrageous, over-the-top and just plain bizarre fashion firsts. Artists tend to think way outside the box when it comes to dressing up for the VMAs , but perhaps no getup in show history has gotten as much attention, caused as much head scratching and turned more heads than Lady Gaga ‘s infamous meat dress. After walking the white carpet in a flowing gold and burgundy Alexander McQueen dress with a matching headdress, Mother Monster shocked the world at the 2010 awards when she slipped into her third outfit of the night: a dress made out of some choice cuts of beef. “As soon as I saw her on that white carpet I just knew that this night was gonna be Gaga insanity,” said Alycia Belle, VMA wardrobe stylist for the 2010 show, in a new “VMAs Revealed” special that premiered on Saturday (August 20). Before unwrapping the cow couture, Gaga had merely one wardrobe change during the show — a black Armani leather dress with spiked bustier. But when the time came to announce Video of the Year, the audience had no idea what was about to hit them. The folks working behind the scenes saw a suspicious number of coolers being brought into Gaga’s dressing room, so they could tell that something was up. “I’m getting calls that she needs to be in her seat, we give her kind of a two-minute head’s up, the door opens up, and I see she’s wearing a red dress,” said Ernesto Elias, Gaga’s talent escort at the show. “I start to notice people staring a little bit harder than they normally would.” And with good reason. While plenty of stars were wearing leather shoes, or even cowhide skirts, no one expected the eye-popping fashion choice that Gaga was about to unveil. “I was literally this close to her … I just remember looking at it and just wondering, ‘Is that really … ?’ remembered Sandra Piedra, talent coordinator for the 2010 VMAs. After a harder look, Elias said he realized that it was not a “normal” type of fabric. Let’s call that the understatement of the year. “People who were on the floor, who are right around her, are like, ‘It’s meat ! Meat! Like, ground chuck meat!’ ” Dave Sirulnick, executive producer of the VMAs, recalled. “I know that there is nobody who ever heard the two words ‘meat’ and ‘dress’ put together before September 12 [2010] at about 11 p.m.” And with the announcement this week that Gaga will be opening the 2011 VMAs , fans of music and fashion everywhere can’t wait to see how she’ll top herself. Kreayshawn Gets NYC Crowd ‘Bumpin’

Bay Area rapper was joined onstage by V-Nasty. By Paul Cantor Kreayshawn (file) Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage NEW YORK — On Wednesday, while premiering their video for “Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie” on MTV.com, the Red Hot Chili Peppers said they decided to scrap the version of the video that was originally directed by Bay Area rapper Kreayshawn — she of “Gucci Gucci” fame — and go with something that they felt was more “them.” If the news caused any damage to the budding female MC’s ego, it didn’t show last night. She was warmly embraced by a Big Apple crowd at the Highline Ballroom, her first official performance in New York City. Diminutive and wiry, Kreayshawn burst onto the stage at 10:45, after the audience was treated to opening sets by rappers Moe Green, Roach Gigz, Phony Ppl and finally, Smoke DZA. Despite the openers, the energy in the venue initially remained icy. It resembled something of a showcase, with people anxious to see if the controversial rapper — who’s up for a Best New Artist award at the 2011 VMAs — could hold her own in front of a feisty and oft-critical New York audience. Speculation also abounded about whether or not her White Girl Mob counterpart V-Nasty would let loose with a barrage of N-words, as she’s recently come under fire for doing. Kreayshawn didn’t seem swayed, though. Clad in a white Bathing Ape T-shirt, mom jeans and a colorful snapback cap, she squealed — often inaudibly, but not without a distinguishable melisma — over the backing vocal tracks of lesser-known cuts from her Kittys x Choppas mixtape (“Wavey”), and newer, unreleased material (“Left Eye”). Playful, petite and most of all, entertaining, she gingerly marauded from one end of the stage to the other. The energy was turned up a notch, however, when V-Nasty took the stage. Donning a retro Charlotte Hornets cap, a plain white T-shirt and jeans, she tore into cuts from her Don’t Bite Just Taste mixtape, and then played Thelma to Kreayshawn’s Louise for the rest of the show. The show’s climax, however, came when Kreay explored her most popular tunes. The opening synth blurps of “Bumpin Bumpin” got the entire crowd’s hands in the air, and then her DJ, Two Stacks, dropped the beat for “Gucci Gucci.” The audience sang back each line to Kreayshawn, while a random person walked onstage and took a courageous stage dive. “Why there only guys up here?” Kreayshawn questioned, as the beat was halted. “I need a bad bitch up here.” Her request went unmet, but that didn’t stop the crowd from singing the song a capella until its end. She parted the stage amidst a dance party, singing the lyrics to Alexander O’Neal’s 1985 hit “Saturday Love.” It was a fitting, celebratory close to a night on which New York finally gave one of hip-hop’s most controversial new artists its nod of approval.
