Katy Perry Ties Michael Jackson Singles Record

‘Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)’ marks Perry’s fifth #1 single from Teenage Dream, equal only to MJ’s Bad achievement. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: C. Flanigan/ FilmMagic Back in June, Katy Perry was closing in on Michael Jackson ‘s record for the most #1 singles from the same album — and now she’s tied it up. Thanks to the feel-good party jam “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” Perry has the same number of #1 singles from Teenage Dream on the Hot 100 as the late King of Pop did from 1987’s Bad. Now, Perry is both the only woman with five #1 singles from the same album and also the only living artist with that record. So what singles got her there aside from “Last Friday Night”? Perry’s previous #1’s from Teenage Dream are “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” “Firework” and “E.T.” Jackson achieved this feat back in 1987 and 1988 with “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You,” “Bad,” “The Way You Make Me Feel,” “Man in the Mirror” and “Dirty Diana” from his Bad album. “What a way to wake up! SO proud to announce that the little-engine-that-could of a song ‘LAST FRIDAY NIGHT’ is officially #1 & made HISTORY!” the singer tweeted Wednesday (August 17). “&u know, I couldn’t have done it with out ya, really I owe u guys BIG… so take this moment to give yourself a high FIVE!!! #allbecauseofu.” Explore our “Katy Perry: By The Numbers” infographic: Perry broke another singles record earlier this month, having the first album from the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart to have five #1 singles. Perry’s Teenage Dream album is the first in the nearly 19-year history of the chart to accomplish that feat. “Last Friday Night” has proven to be another successful track for the star, and the party anthem recently got an assist from Missy Elliott on the remix . Perry’s Teenage Dream videos have also been cultural smashes. For the 2011 Video Music Awards , Perry racked up the most nominations with nine, including nods for Video of the Year and Best Female Video for “Firework”; Best Pop Video for “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)”; and Best Collaboration, Best Art Direction, Best Direction, Best Editing and Best Special Effects for the Floria Sigismondi-directed “E.T.,” which features fellow nominee Kanye West. Her dreamy “Teenage Dream” clip even nabbed a nomination for Best Cinematography. What’s your favorite Teenage Dream single? Let us know in the comments below! The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live on Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Chris Brown Video Director Calls VMA Noms ‘Crazy’

Colin Tilley tells MTV News it’s ‘really cool’ to see clips he helmed for Breezy and Justin Bieber getting awards-show nods. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Steven Roberts Chris Brown Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Colin Tilley has been having a heck of a year directing videos for Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Diddy-Dirty Money and Justin Bieber. Now, the California native finds two of his works nominated for the 2011 VMAs . Tilley’s clip for Chris Brown’s “Look at Me Now” is up for Best Hip-Hop Video and Best Collaboration, while his video for Justin Bieber’s “U Smile” garnered a nod in the Best Male Video category. “It’s crazy to see the videos that we’ve been doing getting awards, actually nominations in general, from the VMAs. It’s pretty amazing,” Tilley told MTV News on Tuesday when we visited the set of Wiz Khalifa’s upcoming “No Sleep” video. “As far as the hip-hop [category], ‘Look at Me Now,’ in general, is an amazing song. I remember when I got that song, I was like, ‘Jeez, this is a hit right here. This is just going to win some awards,’ as soon as I even I heard the song,” Tilley recalled of the vid that features both Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes. “The video just naturally and very seamlessly came together and we created something that I think is really cool.” While the director has worked most frequently with Brown — directing a number of his videos, including “Deuces,” “She Ain’t You” and “No BS” — Tilley also built a nice working relationship with Bieber after directing his 2010 visual for “Never Let You Go.” ” ‘U Smile’ was a very special video because I got to see Justin grow up. So we definitely went for this cinematic, stylized feel that really just showcased him as an iconic artist, as an icon in general,” the lens master said. “That was a really special experience. I remember the night before he had some award and he came to the set and he was really feeling himself. It was awesome.” You can vote for general VMA categories, including Best New Artist , by visiting VMA.MTV.com or m.mtv.com on your mobile phone. Lady Gaga VMA Dress 2011: A Bag of Bones?

How will Lady Gaga’s meat dress at last year’s VMAs ever be topped? By Lady Gaga’s bag of bones dress this fall, according to one report . Yes, we’re serious. The singer’s camp has not confirmed if she’ll wear it – what would a Gaga entrance be without suspense – but the outrageous getup is already being crafted with her MTV Video Music Awards appearance in mind. PigofTheMonth (dot) com, an onle retailer of BBQ meats and sauces, has offered Gaga FIVE HUNDRED GRAND to wear a yet-to-be-seen bone dress. The Ohio-based company has teamed up with a well-known fashion designer who has shown in New York, London and Paris to cook up the couture. Plans would also include using gourmet barbeque sauces accessories and makeup to accompany the skeletal contents. Sounds … rather elaborate. “We won’t reveal the number of bones that it includes just yet,” PigofTheMonth CEO Lea Richards says, adding that it weighs a modest 12 pounds. “[Gaga] will still be able to move in a normal fashion,” Richards said. The real hook that might really get Gaga to sink her teeth into this concept? The bone dress will also be auctioned off to benefit Bones for Hunger. That would be PigofTheMonth’s soon-to-be launched financial assistance program for struggling artists. So she’d be helping support good cause. If she passes, there’s still time to bone up on other options. Sorry.

Tyler, The Creator Thinks His VMA Rivals ‘Suck’

‘If I lose to any of those wackass videos, I’m gonna be mad because they all suck — except for Adele’s,’ Tyler tells MTV News. By Rob Markman Tyler The Creator Photo: MTV News Tyler, the Creator bites his tongue for no one. Some call him evil, others, unbelievable. So when asked about his feelings on his 2011 MTV VMA Video of the Year nomination, Tyler simply spoke his mind. “I’m really excited, shout out to Ron Artest. If I lose to any of those wackass videos, I’m gonna be mad because they all suck — except for Adele ‘s,” he told MTV News. The Odd Future standout’s self-directed “Yonkers” video is up against Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep,” Beastie Boys’ “Make Some Noise,” Bruno Mars’ “Grenade” and Katy Perry ‘s “Firework.” The “Yonkers” clip, which was uploaded to the Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All’s YouTube page back in February, has since racked up 15 million views. Most noted for the scene in which the rapper hangs himself in the end, the “Yonkers” video has become one of the most talked about and debated works of the year. It earned Tyler a Best New Artist nom as well. While the Cali rapper/producer/director is more respectful of his fellow Best New Artist nominees, he still wants to win that one too. Up against indie poppers Foster the People (“Pumped Up Kicks”), Big Sean (“My Last”), Kreayshawn (“Gucci Gucci”) and Wiz Khalifa (“Black and Yellow”), Tyler will let his guard down just a bit in this category. “The Best New Artist thing, that’s cool. Wiz is a really good dude and I’ve been a fan of his music, so if he wins I’ll be pretty excited. I wanna win that for sure, but Wiz is awesome, I’ve been listening to him since ’08,” he said. “Even Kreayshawn, she’s cool. So if she wins that too, I’ll be pretty stoked. But you know, I wanna win, I’m just gonna keep it 100.” Snagging a VMA has been a goal of the “Sandwitches” MC for months. He has been tweeting feverishly about it, but even he was surprised when he actually heard the nominations announcement. After the group manager called the entire OFWGKTA to a meeting, Tyler grew weary. “We were like, ‘What the f— does he have us here for?’ We were ready to leave. Then the VMA nomination thing came on and I was on my phone and I was like, ‘Oh crap I want to see what wack videos they have this time,’ ” Tyler recalled of his skepticism before being hit with the news. “Then they said my name and was talkin’ about it and I was like ‘What the hell?’ I kinda stopped breathing, I was just sitting there. I was kinda shaking. I don’t know, it was surreal.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live on Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
