Drake, B.o.B Lead Celebs’ Picks For Best Hip-Hop Video VMA

Nicki Minaj, Gucci Mane, Lil Twist and more weigh in. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by MTV News staff Drake performs at the OVO Festival on Sunday Photo: Stephen Fernandez/ Splash News The Best Hip-Hop Video category at Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards will pit a blue-chip lineup of MCs against one another. The collaboration-heavy field includes B.o.B (featuring Hayley Williams) with “Airplanes,” Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Eminem with “Forever,” Eminem with “Not Afraid,” Jay-Z and Swizz Beatz with “On to the Next One,” and Kid Cudi (featuring MGMT and Ratatat) with “Pursuit of Happiness.” The category includes nods for two legends, Em and Hov, who boast acclaimed late-career albums, but the recent focus has been on two big-in-2010 newcomers: Drake and B.o.B. Atlanta upstart B.o.B, whose “Airplanes” duet was also in the running to be crowned MTV’s Summer Jam of 2010, has made a lot of noise with his melodic singles and chart-ruling LP, B.o.B Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray. But Drake has had fans rioting, screaming and weeping in anticipation of his debut, Thank Me Later, and even bloggers fell back when it came to posting leaked songs, out of respect for the Toronto MC . So who will take it? When MTV News hit up a slew of celebs, the stars seemed split over which lyricist should walk out of the VMAs with a shiny new Moonman for his mantle. “Definitely would like to see Drake take it, ’cause he’s a good friend of mine, and definitely B.o.B, because he’s hometown,” said fellow ATL spitter Gucci Mane. “I would like to say … B.o.B for the hometown and Drake on the strength [of his skills]. He’s a talent.” “They’re both really good, but B.o.B’s just more my style,” said Kendall Knight of Big Time Rush. “Drake’s the man; he represents Canada. But B.o.B’s really cool.” “My brother Drake, he has to win. It’s Young Money, he gotta win that one,” Drizzy’s Young Money cohort Lil Twist insisted. “Shout-out to B.o.B, but Drake gotta win that one.” Disney actress Keke Palmer said she’s been cool with Drake since their child-star days, but she’s also feelin’ newbie B.o.B. “I love Drake. Whenever I did something in Toronto, I used to go visit him on the set of ‘Degrassi.’ Then I love B.o.B because I met him and he’s so cool and we’re friends,” Palmer said. “I don’t know what to do, because I love both of them.” Rapid-fire Chi-Town lyricist Twista was all about the gritty knock of Hov’s contending video. “I like all [of those] songs, but that “On to the Next One” with Jay-Z and Swizz Beatz is crazy,” Twista smiled. “That’s my jam right there.” Sarah Hyland of the Emmy-winning hit “Modern Family” said, “I love Eminem. His new album [ Recovery ] is amazing.” Nicki Minaj may hook up a range of artists with a colorful feature, but she proves that, in the end, she stays loyal to her hip-hop family. “Do you even have to ask that? My baby Drake … he does this,” Minaj said. “Young Money.” Regardless of who takes it Sunday, Gucci pointed out that just being recognized is a dope distinction. “From Kid Cudi to everyone you named on that list, big ups and respect,” Gucci noted. “It’s an honor to be nominated.” Who do you think will win Best Hip-Hop Video at this year’s VMAs? ‘Glee’ Star Matthew Morrison Teams With JC Chasez For Solo Album

Actor gets help from former ‘NSYNC-er for ‘Dancing in the Rain.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Matthew Morrison Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images It’s no Acafellas reunion, but “Glee” star Matthew Morrison says he hooked up with former boy bander JC Chasez for one of the tracks on his solo album, which he plans to release next year. “I wrote about half the album so far, but I’ve definitely co-wrote. I’ve definitely teamed up with some great producers, some great songwriters,” he teased MTV News at the “Glee” season two premiere party on Tuesday night in Los Angeles. “And yeah, I just did this great song last week with JC Chasez that was very, very cool. It turned out really well. He’s such a good songwriter.” While the details of the collaboration with the former ‘NSYNC member are scant, Morrison (who plays glee club coach Will Schuester on the show) did share the name of the track. “It’s called ‘Dancing in the Rain,’ not ‘Singing in the Rain,’ but ‘Dancing in the Rain.’ ” Morrison shared that he’s got some other collaborations on the album, but wouldn’t name names. “It’s very eclectic. I’m doing some great duets. I can’t release who they’re with yet, [but it’s] some people that you’ve probably heard of before, that you’ve definitely heard of before.” Fans of “Glee,” which returns to Fox on September 21, shouldn’t be surprised to learn what Morrison’s album will sound like. “It’s gonna be a little adult contemporary,” he said. “And there’s gonna be some pop songs that you can shake your money maker to in the club.” And while Morrison’s co-stars may be presenting an award at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, he’s got even bigger plans following his album’s release. “I’m hoping to perform at the VMAs next year!” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. Bruno Mars Says ‘Words Cannot Express’ His Excitement For VMAs

‘It’s so surreal,’ the singer/producer says of performing and being nominated for Sunday’s show. By Peter de Saint Phalle, with reporting by Jayson Rodriguez Bruno Mars Photo: MTV News It’s no secret that this has been a big summer for Bruno Mars . Whether he’s producing profanity-laced records with Cee-Lo Green , collaborating with B.o.B and Travie McCoy or touring to promote his debut EP It’s Better If You Don’t Understand and upcoming LP, Doo-Wops & Hooligans, this producer-turned-rock/soul singer is popping up everywhere. This week alone, Mars is hitting our screens with the premiere of his “Just the Way You Are” video and with a performance at Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards. “It’s all happening so fast,” Mars told MTV News last month, when reflecting on his successes in the past months. His collaboration with B.o.B, “Nothin’ on You,” is also up for Best Pop Video at the show, which airs live on Sunday at 9 p.m. ET. “It’s so surreal,” he said. “I grew up watching the VMAs and seeing everyone doing their thing on it.” The singer, who’s also one third of the production trio the Smeezingtons, said he actually found out he’d be performing at the show before he heard he’d been nominated. “It’s kinda like the biggest stage of our generation, so to be nominated AND get to perform … words cannot express.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. Chris Brown And Michael Ealy Interpret Final ‘Takers’ Scene

Stars of hit film explain why their characters make critical decision By Shaheem Reid Chris Brown and Michael Ealy Photo: MTV News Chris Brown and T.I. ‘s new film “Takers” had another hefty haul this past weekend, bringing in close to $12 million after last week’s $20 million-plus #1 finish. We’ve given you ample time to see it, so now we can reveal a spoiler. Warning: Stop reading now if you haven’t seen the flick. We’ll catch you on the rebound. One of the climatic scenes in the film features brother bank robbers Chris Brown and Michael Ealy having a showdown with the police. The team of “takers” identities has been discovered, and police officers are dispatched to take them out. At the heist-master’s hangout, a jazz club, Ealy arrives and learns that his girlfriend has been murdered by T.I.’s character, Ghost. Minutes later, the police amass in front of the venue. Ealy asks his brother, Brown, whether he wants to leave through the back door or through the front, where a SWAT team is waiting. The duo choose the front, and are subsequently gunned down. You don’t actually see them die, but it is highly implied. So, why not slip out through the back? “I think it was that inevitable circumstance. We had to be like, ‘You know what? We’re gonna get caught, and we don’t wanna do life in prison,’ ” Brown explained about the last scene. “We knew the risk we were taking when we did it. ‘Let’s go out in a blaze of glory.’ ” “I had nothing else to live for,” Ealy said about his character. “Yeah. His girl was all dead,” Brown added. “That’s bad. He didn’t wanna see me get locked up.” Ealy jokingly said his character really wanted to take an alternate escape route, but Brown’s character wouldn’t listen. “I tried to tell him to go through the back door,” Ealy said with a laugh. “But, even the back door, they had us surrounded. There was no getting around it.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Takers.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . VMA Host Chelsea Handler Calls Lady Gaga’s Fashion ‘A Jackpot’

She also plans to hook up with Eminem after Sunday’s show. By Gil Kaufman Chelsea Handler Photo: MTV News Chelsea Handler often complains that the big stars avoid her E! talk show, “Chelsea Lately,” leaving her with a string of Kardashians and the occasional rapper to fawn over. But on Sunday night, when she steps up as host of the MTV Video Music Awards , Handler will have more bold names than she could ever dream of skewering at once under one roof, and you can tell she’s excited to be in the presence of such mega-wattage. “She’s pretty successful right about now. She’s got some good music,” Handler said of leading nominee Lady Gaga, who has a record 13 VMA nods . “She’s got a lot going on.” Asked if she were surprised by the baker’s dozen Gaga racked up this year, Handler was not shocked that the dance diva could corral such a mass of nominations, given the sweat she puts into her music and concerts. “I’m not really surprised by anything,” Handler laughed before diving into one her favorite topics, the absurd Internet meme questioning Gaga’s gender. “If you work really hard, I guess you can accomplish anything. Even if that accomplishment is people being confused as to whether you are a male or a female.” The reason stand-up comedians have always done so well at the VMAs is because they’re great on their feet, and given the rapid-fire nature of the roundtable celeb-kebabing that goes on during Handler’s E! show every night, she’s likely to have plenty of quips to drop during Sunday’s broadcast. Some of them will undoubtedly be aimed at Gaga’s notoriously elaborate outfits. “It’s always a jackpot, isn’t it?” she said about Gaga’s outr

‘Jersey Shore,’ ‘Glee’ Casts To Present At 2010 VMAs

Mary J. Blige, Swizz Beatz to perform with Drake, while Bruno Mars will join B.o.B at Video Music Awards on Sunday. By Jocelyn Vena The cast of “Jersey Shore” Photo: MTV The 2010 VMAs may be going live in Los Angeles this year, but MTV viewers will get a glimpse of Seaside Heights when the cast of “Jersey Shore” appears to present on September 12. But it’s not all “GTL” at the MTV Video Music Awards: The just got a bit more “Glee”-ful, as castmembers of the hit Fox show, including Jane Lynch, Cory Monteith, Chris Colfer and Amber Riley will also be on hand to present on Sunday. And those aren’t the only big names just added to the presenters list. TV talk-show maven and former “American Idol” host Ellen DeGeneres (who will tape an episode of her show at the VMAs), “Burlesque” star Cher, VMA-nominated Katy Perry, “Star Trek” star Chris Pine, Rosario Dawson, the cast of “Jackass” including Johnny Knoxville, Bam Margera, Steve-O are all presenting, along with reality-show starlet Kim Kardashian and Romeo of the Latin music sensation Aventura. Before the VMAs kick off at 9 p.m. ET, “Hills” star and newly named “Dancing With the Stars” contestant Audrina Patridge will be the official MTV International “2010 MTV Video Music Awards” red-carpet guest correspondent. Nicki Minaj will take the stage during the pre-show portion of the ceremony, while model Coco Rocha will host MTV.com’s “Red Carpet Report.” As if all of that wasn’t news enough, an already star-studded performance lineup has just gotten more so: Mary J Blige and Swizz Beatz will hit the stage with Drake, while Bruno Mars will join “Nothin’ on You” MC B.o.B . This latest round of celebrities joins previously announced performers including Eminem, Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Drake, Linkin Park and Usher. Those VMA acts should more than meet the show’s musical expectations, especially since host Chelsea Handler has said she won’t be doing any singing or dancing on the Nokia Theatre stage. “I’m not a dancer and I’m not a singer, and I don’t have the kind of ass that should be mooned. I mean it’s sweet, it’s a sweet ass, but it’s little and it’s white,” she joked. “I’m there to be funny, kind of, so hopefully I’ll just kind of doing that.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12. 30 Seconds To Mars Win Their War: A VMA Cheat Sheet

Take a look back at Jared Leto and company’s road to the 2010 VMAs. By James Montgomery 30 Seconds To Mars Photo: MTV News The success of 30 Seconds to Mars’ This Is War album is as much a tribute to the band’s unyielding dedication as it is to their general insanity. After all, they were, for a long while, a band without a home — having been famously sued for $30 million by their label, Virgin Records — or a plan ( Jared Leto told MTV News that he intended to sell their still-unfinished album “door to door”) if the band couldn’t rectify things with Virgin). Of course, we all know how the story ends. After a long wait, War hit stores in December, spawned two hit singles and served as the launching pad for 30 Seconds to Mars’ ever-growing world tour. Perhaps as a tribute to their unwavering commitment, the band was honored with four nominations at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , including nods for Best Rock Video and Video of the Year. (Nominations they promise to celebrate with a very unique arrival at the show on September 12 .) It was a pretty nice reward for all their struggles, and though everything is right in the 30 STM universe these days, that wasn’t always the case. So with the VMAs just around the corner, we decided to take a look back at the band’s long and bloody battle for their future. There’s a reason they decided to call their album This Is War, after all. In 2009, things were pretty bleak, but rather than be deterred by a mega lawsuit and an uncertain future, 30 Seconds to Mars never backed down . Instead, they pressed on with the album bringing in Kanye West , holding fan-only recording sessions , importing Tibetan monks . They made This Is War bigger and badder, despite the very real possibility that it might never see the light of day. It was either a labor of love or an exercise in lunacy. Maybe both. Eventually, things reached a breaking point. In the spring of 2009, 30STM’s lawsuit was settled, in an effort to “make peace, to move ahead and begin again.” And work began on finally bringing This Is War home. Of course, just because they’d made peace with their label, that didn’t mean they were going to change the way they’d operated throughout the creation of their album … quite the opposite, in fact. Emboldened, they set out to make things even bigger than before. In October 2009, with the release of War still some two months off, they began working on their epic “Kings and Queens” video , a massive, sprawling thing that saw the band — and an army of their Critical Mass cohorts — take over the streets of Los Angeles, riding en masse while the city slept. It was a project of such scale that Jared Leto (who directed under his “Bartholomew Cubbins” alter ego) almost didn’t finish the thing, and “Queens” was literally in the edit room until hours before it premiered. His hard work would be rewarded, as the song — and video — would both hit big, and, in February 30STM prepared to launch their Into the Wild world tour . In April, with the North American leg of the jaunt just around the corner, they shot another epic video, for the album’s title track. Featuring Leto and his mates in army fatigues and body armor, “War” looked like a suitable follow-up to “Kings and Queens.” Only, months passed, and to date, the video has yet to premiere . By this point, of course, the band was practically impervious to struggle, so rather than continue to wait for “War” to be completed, they decided to shoot yet another video, a downright spiritual live clip for “Closer to the Edge.” . They just set off across North America once again, and there are plans to release a pair of films — one documenting the making of the This Is War album, and a second about the Into the Wild tour — in the near future. And, yes, Leto says that someday, the “War” video will see the light of day. No matter what it takes to get it done. Conflict is nothing new for his band, after all. As their success seems to prove, they practically thrive on it. The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. Will B.o.B’s ‘Airplanes’ Soar Past Rival Video Of The Year Nominees?

ATL MC and Hayley Williams, who shot brooding clip without ever meeting, will perform the smash at VMAs on September 12. By Jayson Rodriguez B.o.B in his music video for “Airplanes” Photo: Rebel Rock B.o.B has racked up a bevy of hits from his freshman effort, The Adventures of Bobby Ray, but so far the Atlanta upstart’s awards haul doesn’t match his Billboard tally. Maybe his luck will change at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards? Among his five chances to score a Moonman on September 12, the melodic MC will vie for the night’s biggest prize, the coveted Video of the Year award for his Hiro Murai-directed “Airplanes.” If the clip wins, it certainly would have one of the more unique backstories of late. B.o.B and the song’s guest, Paramore’s Hayley Williams , actually shot their parts separately at two different times (scheduling conflicts caused them to spread the production over three months); the pair also recorded the song at different times as well. In fact, the two artists — labelmates at Atlantic Records — will meet for the first time during the VMAs when they perform “Airplanes” together for the first time. Despite the fact that B.o.B and Williams don’t appear in any scenes together, visually they deliver just as well as they do vocally on the smash single. The dark tone of the record is represented in the clip. Light is used sparingly throughout the video, as B.o.B’s punching lyrics about fortitude cut deep. Production for the video was done in an abandoned warehouse and a dead-open space, which underscore elements of the song’s lyrics, particularly the themes of emptiness. Williams can be seen in CGI-like Polaroid photos, generated from a rave of lurking party-goers; the singer’s image flashes across the pictures. B.o.B’s defiant lyrics are in contrast to the subtle cues in the clip, creating a visual marriage that’s as powerful as any of the other nominated candidates. And he certainly seemed to think so. The rapper was excited about his nominations when he spoke to MTV News. In particular, B.o.B was ecstatic about being recognized for accomplishments that reach beyond his chart-topping hits. “It’s very special to me. I think it’s a lot more special than the success of the singles, because this reflects the work I’ve put in over the years and the word of mouth I’ve helped create,” he said. “It’s definitely amazing. I’m trying to find the words to explain it, but I can’t. It’s inexplicable. I’m a real simple man, so, you know, I accept every gift with generosity and gratitude.” What’s your favorite B.o.B video? Tell us your pick — and why — in the comments! The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through September 12.
