Lady Gaga’s Daring Fashion Makes Her A VMA Icon

Armed with multiple dressing rooms and costume changes, Gaga makes a memorable debut. By Mawuse Ziegbe Lady Gaga performs at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Getty Images After the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards , Lady Gaga was no longer just another face in the pantheon of rising pop stars who occasionally hit the red carpet in a zany getup. She became, undeniably, a star. In an evening packed with an all-star tribute to Michael Jackson, an elaborate Taylor Swift performance in a New York City subway station and headline-hogging stage-crashing moments, Gaga still stood out. It wasn’t just her blood-smeared rendition of “Paparazzi” that scored fans’ attention; it was her eye-popping, show-topping, OMG-inducing style. In the MTV special “The VMAs: Revealed – Presented by New 5 React Gum,” VMA insiders broke down exactly how her inventive fashion made for one of the most legendary debuts in the show’s history. Ultimately, five game-changing Gaga looks were broadcast to viewers that evening, but the pop star and her team came ready to rock a bunch of outfits. “She showed up with racks and racks of clothes,” dressing room production assistant Katie Meath said. “We had five P.A.s carry everything up and we went back for another round.” “I remember one thing. It looked like a black dominatrix outfit but there were spikes. There was a lot going on,” dressing room production assistant Anthony Deleo added. Dealing with a gaggle of style choices, Gaga didn’t have the time to get tripped up by the backstage mayhem, and show organizers had to figure out a way for the star to hop in and out of her complex outfits with ease. “The day before the show we had rehearsals. We actually had a stopwatch just timing ourselves. We really didn’t have enough time to take her to her second-floor dressing room,” said Ernesto Elias of MTV Music & Talent. “We created a quick-change room right off the side of the stage.” Gaga took home the Moonman for Best New Artist but by wriggling in and out of her fashion-forward costumes within minutes and hustling back to her seat in time to make a series of unforgettable cutaways, she also nabbed the honor of staging one of the most memorable VMA debuts ever. “We’ve seen it all, we’ve done it all,” VMA director Hamish Hamilton said. “There we all were … kind of mesmerized in Gaga-dom.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Kanye West’s 2008 VMA Set Was Born At Obama’s Nomination

Genesis of West’s memorable performance of ‘Love Lockdown’ is uncovered on ‘VMAs: Revealed’ this Saturday. By Mawuse Ziegbe Kanye West performs “Love Lockdown” at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Getty Images Kanye West’s most memorable VMA appearance to date is probably that whole Taylor Swift nonsense that went down at the 2009 show. But one thing for which the Louis Vuitton Don can always be counted on is a stunning live television moment — whether he’s been invited to the stage or not. His most triumphant appearance arguably took place at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards , when the Chicago MC mounted an innovative rendition of his spankin’ new single “Love Lockdown.” Kanye ditched the hard-hitting rhymes for heartfelt vocals and closed the show with 20 Taiko drummers pounding out the song’s thunderous rhythms. It was a new direction for the star, who bravely risked wiping out his street cred and weathering worldwide fan backlash for his inventive, genre-melding sound. Like Madonna writhing onstage in a wedding dress, Lady Gaga hanging from the ceiling smeared in fake blood or Eminem leading an army of blond doppelgangers into Radio City Music Hall, Kanye West’s 2008 set had all the makings of a signature VMA moment: a tricked-out performance from a major superstar laced with the slightest hint of WTF. However, executing West’s appearance was a mad dash to the VMA finish line, with the show’s organizers and the artist careening toward super-firm deadlines in the race to pull off the performance. In the special “The VMAs: Revealed – Presented by New 5 React Gum,” premiering on MTV at 11 a.m. Saturday, the whirlwind creation of 2008’s “Love Lockdown” set is broken down by the people who made it happen. The idea for West to wrap up the VMAs with his 808s & Heartbreak single popped up at an unexpected venue: The 2008 Democratic National Convention. As Barack Obama accepted his party’s nomination to run for president, VMA executive producer Dave Sirulnick and West met up in Denver to discuss the MC’s latest work and MTV’s upcoming awards show. “It was phenomenal because it was this whole new thing that Kanye was doing,” Sirulnick says of hearing demos of Yeezy’s new music. “You could see how this could play perfectly as a close to the show.” However, once both parties agreed to have ‘Ye close out the VMAs, the real madness began. To find out how West went from a meeting in Colorado to belting out “Lockdown” at the 2008 VMAs, catch “The VMAs: Revealed – Presented by New 5 React Gum” on Saturday at 11 a.m. The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12. Eminem Channels Marlon Brando For VMA Promo

Rapper remakes scene from 1954 movie ‘On the Waterfront’ for the shoot. By Mawuse Ziegbe Eminem Photo: MTV “I’m ready for my close-up,” joked Eminem, who had two plugs rammed up his nose on the set of his MTV Video Music Awards appearance promo. Even though the superstar MC was covered in prosthetic bruises and hobbles away from an enflamed car in the commercial for the VMAs, Eminem kept things light behind the scenes at his shoot. In fact, the Recovery rapper said that he wasn’t stressing the details, but was there get the job done and maybe horse around a little bit. “They tell me that it’s something for the VMAs, but I’ve been in my little rat hole. They just let me out to play,” Eminem said. “So I’m kind of like that hamster in the ball, when they let him out and he runs around in the ball. I’m in my little ball right now, running around.” In between the running around, the hip-hop megastar, who is up for eight Moonmen , managed to turn in an intense performance in the clip. The commercial opens to the strains of “Not Afraid,” with Em limping away from an overturned car right before it bursts into flames with a blast that sends the rapper toppling to the ground. After an onlooker helps him up, a slew of young men in ’50s period clothing watch Em stagger along as he gains an upright, steely-eyed version of himself. Then, the confident, unharmed Eminem leads the crew of young men toward a city skyline in the distance. The rapper explained that the visual is based on a scene from a classic 1954 Marlon Brando flick. “It’s kind of a take on ‘On the Waterfront.’ Like, loosely,” Em explained. “The car is exploding and I’m hurt.” The promo is infused with the high drama of the chart-topping MC’s return to the top of the music game after battling the lows of a debilitating drug addiction. If the power of the visual short is any indication, Em is going to run things as a performer at this year’s VMAs. What are you expecting from Eminem’s appearance at the VMAs? Katy Perry, Russell Brand’s Love Story Began At The VMAs

Russ-Kat’s backstage interactions were broken down in “The VMAs: Revealed” By Mawuse Ziegbe Katy Perry and Russell Brand Photo: Jeff Vespa/ Getty Images MTV Video Music Award nominee and California Gurl Katy Perry has summed up the main reason why fans tune in to the madness every year: “The VMAs are always the best show to watch because anything can happen. And you know us musicians, we’re psychos!” They’re also suckers for love. No one can deny that VMAs usually serves up plethora of onscreen antics but for Perry and comedian Russell Brand, the real can’t-miss moments happened backstage. The duo are engaged and set to get hitched later this year, but it all began when they snagged each other’s attention at the 2008 festivities. In the special “The VMAs: Revealed – Presented by New 5 React Gum,” insiders uncover the beginning of their road to matrimony. Many reports have pegged the start of the couple’s relationship to their first encounter on the set of the comedy “Get Him to the Greek.” But, more specifically, they met when “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” filmmaker Nick Stoller set up a shoot at the VMAs to score celeb cameos for his Aldous Snow spin-off. “They wanted hot young female artists to be part of the movie,” explained VMA producer Jane Mun. “So, Christina Aguilera was performing, they got her, Pink and Katy Perry.” Perry and Brand filmed a lip-lock for the movie and while the scene stayed on the cutting-room floor, the chemistry between the two began to heat up. “Katy Perry, Oh my god! I was so inspired by Katy Perry’s song’s message [‘I Kissed a Girl’] that I’m currently going through nine Chapsticks a day and my penis has never felt more moisturized,” Brand quipped after the singer performed in 2008. Perry definitely got the joke and laughed, “I love him!” The only problem was that Perry was still entwined with Gym Class Heroes frontman Travie McCoy. But when Perry returned to the 2009 VMAs as a single lady, it was on. When it came to orchestrating a grand entrance for returning master of ceremonies Brand, VMA folks thought the pop star could play a key role. “She’s had a huge year,” said show executive producer Dave Sirulnick. “So [we thought] let’s ask Katy if she would sing [Queen’s] ‘We Will Rock You.’ ” The pop diva apparently rocked more than just the stage, because after flirting their way through rehearsals, producers saw the British funnyman promising to call Perry later on. They struck up a romance, got engaged by New Year’s Eve and when Perry heard the news of her 2010 nominations, she tweeted some sage advice: “I luv the VMA’s, u never know what u’ll get from em! I got a hubby.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Kanye West Apologizes To Taylor Swift For 2009 VMA Interruption

‘I’m sorry, Taylor,’ West wrote on Twitter Saturday morning. By Paul Cantor Kanye West and Taylor Swift at the 2009 Video Music Awards Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic Kanye West took to his Twitter account Saturday morning (September 4) to readdress the 2009 Video Music Awards , when he fatefully interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech . “I’m sorry, Taylor,” he wrote. “We’re both artists, and the media and managers are trying to get between us. She deserves the apology more than anyone. Thank you [Twitter co-founders] Biz Stone and Evan Williams for creating a platform where we can communicate directly.” Expounding on the backlash he received, he wrote, “If you Google a–hole my face may very well pop up 2 pages into the search. … There are people who don’t dislike me … they absolutely hate me. People tweeted that they wish I was dead … No listen. They wanted me to die, people. I carry that.” Kanye went on to say that the media vilified him. He alluded to his claim during a 2005 NBC telethon for Hurricane Katrina that “George Bush doesn’t care about black people,” as a point for which the media was looking to pay him back. He noted that in the VMA aftermath, the media played the race card and turned it into an angry black man versus innocent white girl issue. “Even though the NBC telethon was widely praised y’all didn’t think they was just gone let me get away with that did y’all???!!!” he questioned, rhetorically. “The media has successfully diminished the ‘receptive’ audience of… KANYE WEST. …taking a 15 second blip the media have successfully painted the image of the ‘ANGRY BLACK MAN.’ The King Kong theory. With the help of strong will, a lack of empathy, a lil alcohol and extremely distasteful & bad timing … I became George Bush over night.” Kanye also said that he had a song he’d written for Taylor. Should she not be receptive to that idea, he said he’d perform it for her. “She had nothing to do with my issues with award shows,” he wrote. “She had no idea what hit her. She’s justa lil girl with dreams like the rest of us. Beyonc

Chelsea Handler Refuses To Sing Or Dance At VMAs

‘I’m not a dancer and I’m not a singer, and I don’t have the kind of ass that should be mooned,’ comedian says. By Gil Kaufman Chelsea Handler Photo: MTV News VMA host Chelsea Handler is good at certain things, like telling cutting jokes, writing hilarious books and making her male staffers get dolled up in clothes from Madonna and Lourdes’ Material Girl line. But the “Chelsea Lately” host knows her limitations. “I’ve actually watched a bunch of the VMAs from over the past few years and there was definitely a lot of singing and dancing,” she told MTV News’ Jim Cantiello about her first time hosting the MTV Video Music Awards , which air on Sunday, September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. “I’m not a dancer and I’m not a singer, and I don’t have the kind of ass that should be mooned. I mean it’s sweet, it’s a sweet ass, but it’s little and it’s white.”

Chelsea Handler Schools Staffers On Lady Gaga Pronunciation

‘It’s [Lady] Guh-GAW,’ Handler says behind the scenes of her VMA promo. By Mawuse Ziegbe Chelsea Handler Photo: Timothy White Chelsea Handler is hard at work preparing for her gig as host of the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , a job that includes making sure that there are no slip-ups when it comes to shouting out oddly named pop stars. So, when the cameras went behind the scenes at the funnywoman’s VMA promo shoot, Handler was found reprimanding her staff about the proper ways to announce some of this year’s nominees . “I am excited to see Lady Guh-GAW,” Handler declared, while seated at the head of her staffers table. When someone on her team chimes in with “It’s Gaga,” the way that, well, the whole world pronounces it, the “Chelsea Lately” host jokingly corrected the supposed flub. “No, it’s Guh-GAW,” Handler deadpanned. “Everyone pronounces it wrong.” The comedienne pointed out that another blonde hitmaker, Ke$sha, has endured mass mispronunciation of her uniquely spelled moniker. “Just like Keh-dollar-sign-hah pronounced that way,” Handler said. “She doesn’t want you to say it the other way. I met her.” With the big night just a couple weeks away and the pressure on to deliver another live two-hour event packed with oh-no-they-didn’t moments, the cameras caught Handler and her team engaged in intense brainstorming sessions. And the crew brought in a master of mayhem to help ideate television magic: Kid Rock. “You can go down on Snooki in the hot tub that they have on the ‘Jersey Shore,’ ” Handler suggested to Rock. Lucky for the Handler, the Detroit rap-rocker seemed down for anything. “After a couple fifths of whiskey I’ll go either way. Hell, after a fifth of whiskey I’d have sex with you.” Handler, who has experienced her fair share of passes from popular lyricists , served up a demure reply to the open invitation for a drunken hookup. “Thank you,” Handler responded. B.o.B Teams Up With Rivers Cuomo For ‘Magic’ Video

Weezer frontman and B.o.B entertain a house party in clip, premiering Thursday at midnight on MTV.com. By James Montgomery Rivers Cuomo and B.o.B (file) Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images Rather famously, despite having one of the biggest songs of the summer, B.o.B and Paramore’s Hayley Williams have never actually met. They’ve never even been in the same room, for that matter, even though they both appear in the video for their massive hit, “Airplanes.” So, when it came time for B.o.B to shoot the video for his next single, “Magic,” he decided to pull a complete 180. This time he actually had the song’s co-star, Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo, present when he filmed the clip. “Rivers will be there. Rivers, you better be there, man,” B.o.B told MTV News last month at Lollapalooza. “We’re going to be there at the same time, so it’ll be different for me” And, lo and behold, the “Magic” video — which premieres Thursday night at midnight on MTV.com — actually does feature both B.o.B and Cuomo, as the duo take the stage and rock a particularly raucous house party. In a way, the scene is fitting: After all, the first time the rapper actually met Cuomo, it was onstage, seconds before they performed the song live. Which, thanks to all his success (and an increasingly hectic schedule) is sort of the way B.o.B is meeting everybody these days. “The first time I met Rivers was onstage, in L.A., at the House of Blues, and we did ‘Magic’ for the first time. He walked onstage and that was my first time meeting him, like ‘Hey, Rivers Cuomo!’ ” he laughed. “So, it’s so hectic, so busy there’s a lot of artists you never see until you actually are backstage, or in a dressing room, you know?” Related Videos Unplugged: B.o.B Related Photos Unplugged: B.o.B Related Artists B.o.B Weezer

Lady Gaga’s Rise To Fashion Icon Relived In ‘VMAs: Revealed’

Learn how Gaga pulled off her unforgettable VMA debut in the special premiering Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV By Mawuse Ziegbe Lady Gaga at a 2009 VMA afterparty Photo: Amy Sussman/ Getty Images By most accounts, Lady Gaga turned it out at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards . Gaga stormed the event with an outrageous performance of “Paparazzi” and a cavalcade of costumes that made her debut one of the most memorable first-time VMA outings in the show’s history. In the MTV special, “The VMAs: Revealed – Presented by New 5 React Gum,” viewers will get an inside look at how Gaga and her team pulled off the show-stopping fashion extravaganza. “I told them I wanted to bleed to death for four minutes, and it just went silent. And then they said, ‘OK Gaga, if that’s your vision we’re gonna do it,’ ” Gaga says in the special, describing her meeting with VMA organizers. Gaga didn’t let her status as a VMA rookie stop her from constructing an awards-show appearance for the ages. The singer got her wish to depict her stylized demise onstage, ending her performance by dangling above her crew of dancers, her skimpy white lace ensemble smeared with blood. When the “Poker Face” singer won the Moonman for Best New Artist, she thrust the trophy in the air and declared, “This is for God and the gays!” But for the most part, Gaga let her outfits do the talking for much of the show. In addition to the head-to-toe crimson lace number she donned to accept the award, Gaga hit the carpet and held court in the audience in a bevy of OMG-inducing looks. She was snapped in a corseted Victorian-era Jean Paul Gaultier creation replete with black feathers and a gilded mask. She later showed off her trophy as a vision of Jetson chic, in a space-age lavender bodysuit with three-dimensional details. Gaga owned VMA night when it came to daring style but executing her elaborate fashion show within an awards show was a major enterprise. To learn how it all went down, catch “The VMAs: Revealed – Presented by New 5 React Gum” Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12. Usher’s VMA-Nominated ‘OMG’ Inspired By ’80s Sci-Fi Character

Director Anthony Mandler wanted to let R&B superstar take viewers “on a journey, not a ride.” By Jayson Rodriguez Usher in “OMG” For a video as forward thinking as Usher’s “OMG” — with its laser beams and light flashes — director Anthony Mandler actually looked back for inspiration. “The original idea was kind of Max Headroom,” Mandler told MTV News, citing the animated science-fiction character from ’80s British TV. “That’s where it came from — the TV flickering on and there’s this character. We just wanted to bring it up to date.” “Max Headroom was always in his room,” he continued, “this unidentifiable room, ’80s shapes. I used that for inspiration.” The formula worked: “OMG” is among the Best Male Video nominees for the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. The clip is up against Drake’s “Find Your Love,” Jason Derulo’s “In My Head,” Eminem’s “Not Afraid” and B.o.B.’s “Airplanes.” Mandler is a multiple nominee, having also helmed Drake’s video. “OMG” is the first time Usher and Mandler — who’s worked with Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige, and Rihanna — collaborated on a project. Usher said he knew the video would be a challenge and wanted to make sure the director was up to the task. “When I first shot the song to him, I was like, ‘Are you sure you’re gonna be able to catch this one?’ And he said, ‘I got it,'” Usher explained. “We wanted to bring into my world,” he continued. “Obviously, the international sound and look and feel has already been set, but we wanted to do something theatrical, fun and energetic to show us working off of each other and playing off of each other as artists, but the cinematography would be artistic and incredible.” Mandler described the visuals as “Hitchcock-ian.” Though the style of the shot was important to the director, he had a simpler goal in mind: to capture Usher in his element. He said the key to the clip was simply letting Usher’s talent take over. “The concept was to create a world where we put Usher in a space where he does what I think he does better than anyone else in the world, which is perform at a level and magnitude of a superstar and take us, the viewer, whether audible or visually, on a journey, not a ride,” the director said. “And, in that, I wanted to create an unpredictability, so one set leads to another and another, and you never know what’s gonna happen. Along the way, Usher becomes our guide. We’re so focused on him, we don’t notice the change. The thing is unfolding little by little, and you can’t quite see far enough ahead to know what’s gonna come next.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET.
