Drake Channels Frank Sinatra In VMA Promo

‘I like to get into characters,’ former TV star says on the set of his ’50s-themed shoot. By Mawuse Ziegbe Drake on the set of his 2010 VMA promo Photo: Jorge Rios/Picturegroup Drake is taking it way back for his 2010 MTV Video Music Awards promo. Donning a dapper suit, complete with a gentlemanly pocket square, the singer and rapper is surrounded by midcentury glamour as he takes the mic for a commercial touting his VMA appearance . The Toronto lyricist makes a dramatic entrance under a brightly lit “Drake” marquee and steps onto a stage populated by a sprawling big band sporting white jackets. “I get to channel my inner [Frank] Sinatra,” Drizzy — who is up for Moonmen for Best Hip-Hop Video and Best Male Video — said on the set. “In the acting world, you gotta have reference points. I like to get into characters.” Sinatra isn’t the only legend that influences Drake’s gentlemanly style in the promo. The “Degrassi” actor-turned-chart-topping MC also looked to Denzel Washington’s troubled trumpeter in Spike Lee’s 1990 flick “Mo’ Better Blues.” ” ‘Mo’ Better Blues’ is like one of my favorite movies of all time. This reminds me of Denzel, who played a character [called] Bleek Gilliam,” Drake explained. “I’m trying to channel that today.” Drake may have mined the mannerisms of a pair of jazzy icons for the promo, but the period set and crew of extras donning retro looks also helped the MC get in character. “There’s a ’50s theme. They got it right, though. They got the set and the wardrobe,” Drake said. “I feel like I’m here.” What are you expecting from Drake’s VMA performance? Let us know in the comments below! Chelsea Handler Reveals Her Plans As VMA Host

‘I’ll be myself — that I can promise,’ she says on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show. By James Dinh Chelsea Handler Photo: Jason LaVeris/ FilmMagic While Chelsea Handler will no doubt employ her outrageous late-night shtick as host of the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , that doesn’t mean she’s not going to play nice. On Thursday (August 19), the comedian talked to Ryan Seacrest on his radio show about why she’s pumped about her hosting gig and her plans to reunite Kanye West and Taylor Swift. “I’m pretty excited, because it’s such a big hip-hop and rap year, and I just love having those guys on my show, and they have the best senses of humor anyway,” she said. “I’m hoping we can do some really fun stuff with these A-holes. I want to go and film some ridiculous stuff and see if Kanye, if we can do something with Kanye, because I always talk about Kanye, so he seems like he’d be in on the fun. We just had our first couple of meetings the last couple of weeks, and then we’ll figure out a plan. I’ll be myself — that I can promise.” But Handler doesn’t just want to engage Mr. West in some VMA fun; she’s also eyeing Taylor Swift. “I’d like to get them together is what I’d like to get, because you’ve never really seen them together since then,” she said of the music superstars. “They were supposed to be on ‘SNL,’ but then that didn’t end up happening. I don’t know. We’ll try and think of something clever to do with them, because that would be really fun. Everyone loves Taylor Swift, and Kanye’s … Kanye.” A reunion between the rapper and country songstress would make for a highlight after West’s stage invasion during Swift’s acceptance speech for Best Female Video last year. Since the onstage fiasco, Swift has poked fun at the incident and accepted the rapper’s “very sincere” apology . Kanye is set to perform at this year’s ceremony, and Taylor is nominated for Best Female Video (“Fifteen”). Would you like to see a Kanye and Taylor reunion at this year’s VMAs? Chelsea Handler Reveals She’s Hosting 2010 MTV Video Music Awards

The comedienne announces the gig on ‘Chelsea Lately.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Chelsea Handler Photo: Timothy White For one special evening, Chelsea Handler is bringing her late-night raunch to primetime: Handler will be hosting the MTV Video Music Awards . The comedienne announced the gig on her E! talk show, “Chelsea Lately,” on Wednesday (August 18). “Everyone knows that when you think of rap music and hip-hop you think of ‘Chelsea Lately.’ And that’s why I will be hosting [the show],” Handler quipped, before urging her staff to vie for the extra tickets MTV gave her. “Let the ass-kissing begin,” the funnywoman smiled. Handler will work the mic at this year’s awards show, which airs live from Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. This is the first time the L.A.-based star will host the event where celebs like Lady Gaga, Eminem, Drake, Usher and Katy Perry are up for Moonmen. Among the performers set to hit the stage are Kanye West, B.o.B, Florence and the Machine and Handler’s sometime suitor, Justin Bieber. The talk-show diva is the latest in a long list of comics to handling host duties at the VMAs. In 1985, Eddie Murphy took the cameras backstage at Radio City Music Hall and surprised guests with an impromptu visit to the ladies room. Arsenio Hall presided over the festivities four years in a row, armed with a collection of Day-Glo suits and a quick wit that sparked the requisite “roo, roo, roo!” chorus from the crowd. Fellow late-night comic Jimmy Fallon kicked-off his 2002 hosting duties with an amped-up musical number. Chris Rock helped MTV turn 20 in 2003, delivering a memorable opening monologue that rivaled the infamous Madonna-Britney Spears-Christina Aguilera smooch. Potty-mouthed Brit Russell Brand flexed his skills on two different coasts; hosting in Hollywood in 2008 and returning the next year to helm the VMA’s 2009 New York City homecoming. B.o.B Promises To Wear Nothing But Rocket Boots To VMAs

‘Airplanes’ rapper, who’s nominated for five awards, will also perform on September 12. By James Montgomery B.o.B Photo: MTV News First, B.o.B was just a humble 2010 MTV Video Music Award nominee (five times over). Now, he’s a VMA performer too. On Wednesday (August 18), it was announced that the man known as Bobby Ray would be taking the stage at the 2010 VMAs, joining a performers list that now includes Justin Bieber, Kanye West, Drake and Florence and the Machine. It was just the latest in a string of fairly remarkable news for the up-and-coming star of Southern hip-hop , who can already count a #1 album ( The Adventures of Bobby Ray ) and a pair of smash-hit singles (“Nothin’ on You” and “Airplanes”) among his accomplishments this year. And though he presumably didn’t know he’d be performing at the VMAs when we spoke to him earlier this month at Lollapalooza , B.o.B was already making plans to wow folks at the show. “I’m just gonna wear rocket boots the whole night. And nothing else,” he laughed. “Buck naked, rocket boots. That’s how I roll.” And while we suspect he was just kidding about the nudity (though, really, who can be sure?), B.o.B was dead serious about the honor of being nominated for the VMAs. Even though he didn’t really think his chances of winning a Moonman were all that good … then again, 2010 has been a banner year for him, so who knows? “I don’t know. I really don’t know. There are a lot of very talented artists and musicians in the categories I am nominated for, so really, I feel like just being nominated is cool,” he said. “Just being there, and showing myself, and being present is the main thing that matters. And if you win, that’s cool. You have something to take home, sit on your mantle for the rest of your life and show your kids. ‘Back when I was your age, I was winning awards. What are you going to do with your life?’ ” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Justin Bieber On VMA Promo: ‘I Like Girls Chasing Me’

‘I’m kind of like the Beatles running, and there’s girls chasing after me,’ he tells MTV News of ‘Hard Day’s Night’-inspired promo. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Michael Loccisano/ Getty Images Justin Bieber is up for a Best New Artist VMA at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , and in an upcoming promo for the September 12 show, the Biebs is tailed by his rabid female fans. “I’m kind of like the Beatles running, and there’s girls chasing after me,” he told MTV News of the “Hard Day’s Night”-style teaser. Given that girls chasing him is a standard day on the job for Bieber, he admitted that faking it wasn’t all that hard to do. “Everything’s been going pretty smooth,” he said. “I like girls chasing me, so it’s good.” This isn’t Bieber’s first time in an MTV awards-show promo: He very hysterically appeared in a Movie Awards teaser earlier this year with host Aziz Ansari and “Hurt Locker” star Jeremy Renner. While the shoots were equally fun, the tone of this promo is a bit different. “Aziz was really fun to work with,” he said of the Movie Awards promo. “It was really funny, and this is kind of more serious.” When Justin looks back on past VMAs, one of his fellow nominees stands out as a highlight. “All-time favorite moments of the VMAs? Probably when Eminem performed,” he said. “I’m just a big Eminem fan, and I remember turning on the VMAs and seeing Eminem perform.” Who would he like to see take the stage this year? “I’d love to see Beyonc

Drake Wishes Lil Wayne Could Join Him For 2010 VMAs

‘We could get him out for a day,’ MC says of his incarcerated mentor. By Jayson Rodriguez Drake Photo: MTV News TORONTO — Drake will make his VMA debut next month when he performs at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , and the Thank Me Later star is already thinking about making a grand entrance. He has some history to compete with — it’s hard to beat Diddy arriving via yacht or T-Pain riding an elephant into the festivities. Drake is still wrapping his thoughts around some ideas, but one plan he wishes he could execute is to step onto the VMA red carpet with Lil Wayne. “That would be the illest moment,” Drake said while taking a break from a VMA promotional shoot. “Mob through. The whole Young Money. … Nobody knew about it. We just all show up. … Or we could get him out for a day. And even if he had to wear a jumpsuit or something.” Wayne began his one-year prison sentence for a 2007 gun charge March 8. Unfortunately for Drake, according to prison records accessed by MTV News in July, Lil Wayne has a projected release date of November 4, two months after the VMAs, which will take place September 12 in Los Angeles. Drake, Kanye West, and Florence and the Machine were announced earlier this week as this year’s VMA performers. Kanye West’s Greatest Awards-Show Performances — Until 2010 VMAs

From his epic ‘Jesus Walks’ at the Grammys to his powerful return at the BET Awards, ‘Ye knows how to work the stage. By James Montgomery Kanye West performs at the 2008 VMAs Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage On Thursday (August 12), Kanye West took to his Twitter account to proclaim: “Just met with MTV and it’s about to go down! VMAs!!!” What he meant, of course, is that he’d just been confirmed as a performer at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards . On Sunday, September 12 — live from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET — things are gonna get really interesting, because while Kanye is perhaps best known for his awards-show tirades , tantrums and troublemaking , he has a lengthy list of downright amazing performances over the years too. So, in anticipation of Yeezy’s triumphant return to the VMA stage, we’ve compiled a list of his greatest awards-show performances yet: “Love Lockdown,” 2008 MTV VMAs One year after vowing he’d “never return” to MTV, Kanye thankfully went back on his word , closing out the 2008 VMAs with a stirring premiere of “Love Lockdown,” the first single from his 808s & Heartbreak album. Decked out in a gray suit (complete with beating, LED heart), backed only by a line of riot-gear-clad Japanese drummers, this was an introduction to West’s stripped-down, vulnerable 808s era. Of course, given that he performed the tune in front of an acre-sized wide screen, “stripped down” is a relative term. It’s Kanye we’re talking about, after all. “Power,” 2010 BET Awards West returned from his self-imposed exile (after the Taylor Swift incident at the ’09 VMAs) with this performance, a fiery, fierce debut of his brand-new single “Power.” Standing atop a volcano, impossibly huge Horus chain draped over his neck, the message was clear: Not only was he back, but West was stronger than ever. And also, apparently, fire-retardant. “Swagga Like Us,” 2009 Grammys Joined by fellow hip-hop heavyweights T.I., Jay-Z, Lil Wayne and (a very pregnant) M.I.A., Kanye wowed the Grammy audience with an appropriately swaggering take on the epic posse cut. The performance recalled the glory of the Rat Pack years — tuxedos, bandstands, etc. — and, judging on his verse alone, West was most definitely the Sinatra of the evening. “Jesus Walks,” 2005 Grammys Arguably Kanye’s biggest performance of all time. Joined by Mavis Staples, John Legend and the Blind Boys of Alabama, he took the audience to Sunday service, danced around like Diddy, died in the arms of a silhouetted woman, attended his own funeral, then ascended to heaven, in a white suit and angel wings. Seriously, all of that happened. Oh, and moments later, his College Dropout wins Best Rap Album, at which point West gives an ultra-cocky speech that culminated in him proclaiming, “A lot of people were wondering what I was going to do if I didn’t win anything tonight … I guess we’ll never know.” “Stronger” and “Hey Mama,” 2008 Grammys The polar opposite of “Jesus Walks,” this performance starts off with a typically Kanye-ian take on hit single “Stronger” (smoking lunar landscape, glow-in-the-dark suit, Daft Punk cameo) but then makes an abrupt about-face, as West ditched all the flash and did an updated version of his song “Hey Mama,” changing lyrics to reflect the recent death of his mother, Donda . Crouching beneath a single spotlight, he nearly breaks down at several points, and when he’s done, the Grammy audience gives him a much-deserved standing ovation. It’s his most straightforward performance to date. And yet, it’s also his most powerful. What is your favorite Kanye awards-show performance? Are you looking forward to what he’ll do at this year’s VMAs? Let us know in the comments! Flo Rida ‘Looks Forward’ To David Guetta Bringing Home A VMA

Guetta is up against Lady Gaga, Usher and others for Best Dance Music Video at the 2010 Video Music Awards. By Akshay Bhansali David Guetta Photo: Raymond Boyd/Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images As if working with the Black Eyed Peas, Akon and Rihanna weren’t enough of a signal of international dance music’s crossover star David Guetta ‘s two-year ascension to the top of the American urban pop-music scene, the French house-music producer is up for a Moonman at this year’s Video Music Awards . Nominated for Best Dance Music Video for his hit single “Sexy Chick,” featuring Akon, Guetta is up against some stiff competition for his big night in L.A. on September 12. His fellow nominees include Usher for “OMG,” German dance group Cascada (remember “Everytime We Touch”?) for “Evacuate the Dancefloor” and Enrique Iglesias’ “I Like It,” featuring Snooki, the Situation and company. And let’s not forget the biggest of elephants in the room, Lady Gaga for “Bad Romance.” Still, DGuetta’s boy, rapper Flo Rida, with whom he currently has a top 10 hit in Europe with “Club Can’t Handle Me,” thinks his chances of winning are rather good. “My reaction to David Guetta being nominated for ‘Best Dance Video’? Well, he’s definitely a household name,” Flo told MTV UK today in London. “Not just nationally, but he’s internationally known. He’s a passionate dude about his music and he gets the party crunk. I look forward to him taking that home.” “The genius of him is the fact that he is a perfectionist. He strives to make sure that a record has the right gumbo,” Flo said using the analogy of the Southern dish of random ingredients that somehow just tastes right. “It moves you — having you bob your head. If you are a dancer, it will make you try some new moves. David Guetta has that work ethic and that drive to make sure he has the #1 party record, like we do right now with ‘Club Can’t Handle Me.’ ” And while fans will have to wait till the big night to find out if Guetta proves the victor, Flo Rida has a special message for all you David Guetta fans out there. “To David Guetta and his fans, y’all make sure and support him,” Flo said. “David, you know you work hard. You grind. Win or lose, I feel like you are still the winner because you have fans that are very loyal to you. So do your thing. Keep your head up.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. ET. Florence And The Machine To Perform At Video Music Awards

Their ‘Dog Days Are Over’ clip is nominated for four VMAs at the September 12 show. By James Montgomery She surprised pretty much everybody when her video for “Dog Days Are Over” racked up four nominations at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , and now, flame-haired siren Florence Welch (and, of course, the Machine too) have been tapped to perform the song on the big show, which airs September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. And yes, they’ll be aiming to surprise once again. Though, as Welch told MTV News last week, after learning of her noms, the celebs in the audience probably won’t be the only ones who can’t believe what they’re seeing. “I’m still kind of processing it, to be honest,” Welch said. “It’s such an iconic event, and it’s something I’ve watched on TV since I was a kid. It’s one of those things: It’s not real life, it’s a dream scenario. So for me to be actually a part of it feels like I’m in some sort of parallel universe. It’s kind of strange and wonderful and terrifying all at the same time.” And that’s a pretty good way to describe everything Florence and the Machine do (no wonder we picked them as “Artists to Watch” way back in January). From Welch’s flowing gowns and epic, downright ethereal voice to the harpist she employs and the fresh-cut flowers she insists on decorating her mic stand with before each show, she’s sure to raise more than a few eyebrows and probably win some new fans at the VMAs next month. And one of her fellow nominees can’t wait to see her play live: B.o.B, who told MTV News last week that that he’s a huge fan of Welch and is expecting big things from her on VMA night. “Oh, man, I dig Florence so much. I listened to her perform ‘Dog Days Are Over’ at Coachella, and she’s amazing,” he said. “I hope she performs, and I hope she wins everything. I think she’s awesome.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners in general categories, including Best New Artist, from now through September 12.
