‘Green Hornet’ Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

Superhero film took a winding path to the big screen, and we’ve been there the whole way. By Eric Ditzian Seth Rogen in “Green Hornet” Photo: Sony Pictures When did the story of the Seth Rogen-starring, Michel Gondry-directed “Green Hornet” begin? Does it go all the way back to the superhero’s adventures on 1930s-era radio, or does it begin with the 1966 TV series that made Bruce Lee a star? Perhaps instead we should begin in the early ’90s with Hollywood’s attempt to revive the dormant franchise. There are enough twists and turns there to form the basis of an entire master class in major-studio development hell. The title role, in its various incarnations, was reportedly at one time or another offered to everyone from George Clooney to Greg Kinnear. Directors (including Gondry in the late ’90s) and screenwriters came and went. Studios traded rights to the property. Then, in stepped Rogen and writing partner Evan Goldberg with an outline for the movie in fall 2007. More than three bump-and-bruise-filled years later, “The Green Hornet” finally hit theaters Friday (January 14). How did it get there? What do you need to know before checking out the action/comedy about a rich kid named Britt Reid who turns himself into a superhero with the help of sidekick/genius Kato? All your questions will be answered with MTV News’ “Green Hornet” cheat sheet. The Green Hornet Meets Red-Faced Fans Initial fan reaction to the pairing of Rogen with the superhero material was not kind, and the vitriol seemed never to let up. “People just love bitching,” he laughed during a July ’08 interview with MTV News. “Hopefully, people will see it and say, ‘Oh, yeah, they can kind of do that, maybe we’ll give them an easier time.’ ” Seeking to attract some action-flick cred, Rogen recruited Stephen Chow (“Kung Fu Hustle”) both to direct and to star as Kato . Seeking as well to establish himself as a believable superhero, Rogen hit the gym and began to shed a lot of weight. Then, just like that, Chow was gone as director . And Rogen was screwed . But he and Sony Pictures regrouped, signed Gondry and pushed forward with the project. You’re Perfect, Now Change Nothing, it seemed, would come easy for “Green Hornet.” In summer ’09, the film’s release date was pushed back from June 25 to July 9, 2010. Then Chow skipped out on playing Kato . And then Nicolas Cage, who was set to play the film’s main villain, ditched the production too. The release was once again pushed back , this time to winter 2010. “Every possible obstacle came in our way at one point or another, to the point that it really just got ridiculous,” Rogen told us later. The crew again regrouped, signing Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz to play the villain , alongside Jay Chou as Kato and Cameron Diaz as Reid’s assistant . Production began in fall ’09. “I tried to be very precise,” Gondry told MTV News during the South by Southwest Film Festival last March. “I tried to redefine fights in my own style.” Seriously, Though, Change Again! By spring of last year, things were getting ridiculous. Sony had decided to convert the film to 3-D and yet again pushed back the release date : January 14, 2011, it would be. No matter! The first official image popped up online in June, followed by the trailer . The footage was funny, eye-popping stuff. Hey, maybe this thing wasn’t going to be so bad after all? The second trailer , which dropped in November, backed up that initial impression. And when audiences started to check out early screenings of the film, it turned out they actually liked the movie, that it neatly balanced comedy and action, that it wasn’t, as so many Web-based bloviators suggested, the worst movie in the history of the world. “It is nice that people actually have to base their assumptions on the movie now and not just what they think the movie is going to be like,” Rogen laughed. Check out everything we’ve got on “The Green Hornet.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . ‘James Bond 23’ To Return With Daniel Craig, Studio Says

MGM also announces a November 9, 2012, release date for the previously delayed ‘007’ film. By Kara Warner Daniel Craig and Sam Mendes Photo: Gabriel Bouys/ AFP There’s exciting news for James Bond fans! On Tuesday (January 11), after months of rumors about the fate of MGM — which owns the rights to the “007” franchise — the studio has given the 23rd film in the series a release date and secured “Casino Royale” and “Quantum of Solace” star Daniel Craig to suit up as Bond once again. According to Deadline , the still-untitled film will be released worldwide on November 9, 2012, with Sam Mendes directing a screenplay written by Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and John Logan. While plot details are, as expected, heavily under wraps, we already know that in addition to Craig’s return, Dame Judi Dench will reprise her role as M. “I think I’m going to be needed in spring of 2011,” Dench told MTV News way back in 2009. “That’s a message I got. It would mean I could do something at the end of next year, something else, maybe be in the theater.” Among the other players still to be determined are a likely Bond girl, played in previous films by the likes of Halle Berry (“Die Another Day”), Teri Hatcher (“Tomorrow Never Dies”), Denise Richards (“The World Is Not Enough”) and the woman who started it all, classic beauty-in-a-bikini Ursula Andress (“Dr. No”). With regard to villains, Michael Sheen’s name has been tossed in the mix for the role of Blofeld , a character perhaps more well-known these days as the inspiration for Mike Myers’ Dr. Evil in the “Austin Powers” movies. But there’s no rule in Bond films that says the villain has to be male — or that there will only be one. Who’s your pick for the next Bond girl or Bond villain? Tell us in the comments! Ryan Reynolds And Scarlett Johansson Files For Divorce

Ryan Reynolds And Scarlett Johansson Files For Divorce : Ryan Reynolds And Scarlett Johansson have now officially Files For Divorce. US magazine broke the news two weeks ago about their separation and now it goes official. 34 year old Ryan Reynolds filed papers in Los Angeles Superior Court on Thursday. “After long and careful consideration on both our parts, we’ve decided to end our marriage. We entered our relationship with love and it’s with love and kindness we leave it. While privacy isn’t expected, it’s certainly appreciated.” couple confirmed the news in a joint statement.

Ryan Reynolds officially files for divorce: no prenup, no drama?

Very interesting… on Thursday, December 23rd, Ryan Reynolds officially filed for divorce from Scarlett Johansson. TMZ reports that Ryan and ScarJo coordinated the filing so that Ryan “went first” and ScarJo “responded” to the filing at the same time. So… even though (my opinion) Ryan has been whining like a baby to whomever will listen about how ScarJo is a horrible, immature, self-absorbed, frigid monster , they are still on good enough terms to coordinate the end of their marriage. Almost as if ScarJo just wants to get the hell out, and she doesn’t care if she looks like the bad guy? Ryan Reynolds just officially filed for divorce from Scarlett Johansson, but all signs point to a more-than-amicable parting of ways Scarlett’s response to Ryan’s petition was filed at the same time — a strong indication the two of them coordinated the court filings. Neither party is asking for spousal support. Sources tell TMZ there is no prenup, and Ryan made more money than Scarlett during their 2-year marriage. Ryan lists the date of separation as December 14, 2010. Scarlett agrees on the date. Since everything they earned is community property, presumably it will be divided 50/50, though the petitions say property rights are yet to be determined. Although the divorce is friendly, they aren’t taking any chances. Ryan has hired disso-queen Laura Wasser, and Scarlett has retained Lynn Soodik. [From TMZ ] Here’s something interesting – in People Magazine’s online version of this divorce filing announcement, there is no mention of coordinated filings. People’s version: Just a few weeks after their separation was announced, Ryan Reynolds has begun the process of officially ending his two-year marriage to Scarlett Johansson. The actor, 34, filed for divorce from Johansson, 26, Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court. A source told PEOPLE recently that the couple grew apart under the strain of managing two thriving careers. They were married in a private ceremony in Canada in 2008. [From People ] People Magazine and Us Weekly have taken suspiciously pro-Ryan stances in their reporting, which is definitely a head-scratcher. My take is still that Ryan is pushing a version of the story in which ScarJo is the villain and Ryan is the poor, defenseless nice guy who just wanted babies and a wife who gave up her career to be at his beck and call. You’ve got to wonder why he’s pushing that version so hard… is it because ScarJo was screwing around (with Liev Schreiber and God knows who)? Or is it because Ryan got dumped for good reasons , but ScarJo doesn’t care enough to make those reasons public? Or a little from Column A, a little from Column B…? Photos courtesy of WENN.

National Reviewer Schools Chris Matthews and Joe Klein on Beck, Limbaugh, Tea Party and Islamophobia

Chris Matthews this weekend actually invited a real conservative on to the syndicated program bearing his name, and what transpired was a thing of beauty. National Review’s Rehain Salam did such a fabulous job of educating Matthews and his guests – especially Time’s Joe Klein – that I imagine him quickly becoming a NewsBusters favorite. The initial topic of discussion was Glenn Beck’s “Restoring Honor” rally scheduled to occur after this was taped. Between Matthews’ disrespectful introduction, and Klein calling the conservative talk show host “a paranoid lunatic,” one had the feeling this would have devolved into a full on hate-fest if not for Salam’s presence. Fortunately, the National Reviewer was there to set the record straight (videos follow with transcripts and commentary):  JOE KLEIN, TIME: Newt Gingrich should be embarrassed by the way. He’s much smarter than this. Glenn Beck something different. The guy’s obviously a paranoid lunatic who is a great entertainer. And He is exploiting something that always happens in our country when the economy is bad and when we’re at war. During World War I, if people were caught speaking German in the street, other people would beat them up. During World War II, we interned the Japanese. And now there, the combination of bad, bad economic times over the last couple of years and, and, you know. the terrorism, has, has led to this wave that Glenn Beck and his puppet master Rupert Murdoch are exploiting. Amazing. So geniuses like Klein actually think folks going to Tea Party rallies are akin to people that beat up Germans during World War I or had anti-Japanese tendencies during World War II. Is this really what qualifies as enlightened thinking from so-called journalists today? Regardless of the answer, after opinions from the BBC’s Katty Kay and NBC’s Kelly O’Donnell, Matthews turned to his lone conservative guest (readers are strongly encouraged to watch the videos to see just how well Salam takes control of the panel and the discussion): CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: Reihan Salam, this, this whole thing I think it gets ethnic, I think it gets tribal. I listened to Rush Limbaugh this week saying, you know, “We’re not Islamophobic. We elected Barack Obama. That proves we’re not Islamophobic.” That’s saying he’s Islamic again when the guy’s a Christian. REIHAN SALAM, NATIONAL REVIEW: I don’t that’s quite what it’s saying. MATTHEWS: What is it saying? SALAM: I think what it’s saying is that Barack Obama is someone who comes from a very different kind of background and America has embraced him in large numbers. I also think the idea, respectfully, that Glenn Beck is being controlled by Rupert Murdoch as a puppet master gets things wrong. KLEIN: He hired him. He hired him. SALAM: When you look at Glenn Beck, when you see someone, for example, remember Louis Farrakhan the Million Man March? What was the Million Man March about? A lot of people were terrified about it. It caused a lot of consternation from liberals and conservatives. But ultimately what you saw was an event where tons of African-American men got together and it was really about identity and pride. And I think that when you’re looking at our politics right now, it’s true that in an economic downturn, you see a lot of confusion. You see a lot of uncertainty. And there is a decent number of people who feel not like have-nots, but they feel like are-knots. They feel that they’re not being respected in their public life and they want to assert themselves. For those interested, Salam wrote an article about this on Sunday. But I digress:   MATTHEWS: Who are the Glenn Beck constituency? SALAM: I think that it’s a lot of folks. It’s a lot of people from smaller cities, rural areas, small towns, tend to be white, tend to be Christian-identified. MATTHEWS: Okay, who is their villain? SALAM: I don’t think they necessarily have a villain so much as there’s a lot of confusion… KLEIN: Oh, come on. SALAM: …and anger and resentment. KLEIN: No, listen, the anger is the key here. The one thing that the Million Man March has in common with the Glenn Beck march is anger. And, this is the greatest Democracy and the most prosperous country in the history of the world. Sooner or later you got to ask people, “What are you so damned angry about?” Stop the tape! Isn’t that what Republicans could have asked unhappy voters in 2006? The economy was still booming. Unemployment was under five percent. Yet Democrats had an historic midterm election transfer of power. Now, with unemployment at 9.5 percent and likelihood heading higher, this pathetic liberal “journalist” doesn’t understand what people are “so damned angry about”: SALAM: Anger is what united those men who gathered during the Million Man march. I think it goes back to… KLEIN: Anger at white people, yes! Yes, that’s not an error in transcription. Klein really said the Million Man March was about African-Americans angry at white people:  SALAM: I’m pretty sure that’s not true. KATTY KAY, BBC: When you say, when you say that they’re not have-nots, they feel they are-nots, they are not what? They are not what they see represented in Washington? SALAM: That’s, that’s certainly a part of it. Also, a lot of these people felt disaffected during the Bush years as well. There’s a large number of voters… KAY: But they weren’t angry and they weren’t speaking out against Washington. SALAM: Oh, they certainly were angry, but that anger, that anger wasn’t part of the narrative. Right now that anger fits a media narrative, if I may, that’s very compelling and exciting for people to talk about, and it fits a lot of preconceived notions. KLEIN: And where is that coming narrative coming from? SALAM: It’s coming from a lot of folks, including some of the folks around this roundtable not intentionally, but I think it’s the prism through which we see the world. Ouch! Talk about your shot to the heart! Of course, what Salam was saying was 100 percent true. The disaffected conservative voters have been showing their displeasure since Ross Perot began educating people about the perils of fiscal indiscipline in 1992.  More recently, this anger manifested itself when conservatives didn’t show up to vote in 2006 due to their disgust with the out of control spending by a Republican-controlled Congress. Not that shills like Klein would ever want to admit it, but conservative anger at Republicans had just as much to do with the Democrats’ victory in 2006 as did liberal anger at Republicans. But this lesson wasn’t over, for Matthews asked Salam another great question: MATTHEWS: Here’s my question: There’s a big differential between Republicans attitudes towards Islam and Democratic attitudes. There’s some animus from both parties. But only 27 percent of Democrats say they have a problem with Islam. 54 percent of Republicans do. Explain the differential. As a little background, Matthews has been harping on this issue since the Pew Research Center released these numbers on August 19. Now, the liberal host was finally going to understand the data:  SALAM: I will happily explain it. 25 percent of Americans identify as Republicans. 42 percent identify as conservatives. When you look at those conservatives who don’t identify with the Republican Party, they have different views on a whole host of issues including gay marriage and what have you. And I think that when you’re looking at that 25 percent, that smaller group, then it stands to reason that they’re going to have somewhat different views. Another thing is… MATTHEWS: Why are they anti-islamic. SALAM: One way of saying “I have an unfavorable view of Islam” is to say that “I devoutly believe my own religious views, and I do not accept those views as true.” The view that a lot of Americans have, you know, Buddhists and Hindus and Christians are all going toward the same God, that is the eccentric view in the history of Abrahamic religion. MATTHEWS: Right. SALAM: And I think that, you know, if you asked this several years ago, you would have gotten a pretty similar answer. It’s just that it didn’t connect with the political narrative. Exactly, for the narrative today is that anyone that doesn’t agree with Barack Obama is racist and anybody that doesn’t support the Ground Zero mosque is anti-Islamic. As such, people like Matthews, Klein, and all the Left’s media minions are using any polling data that arises to further this narrative in the hopes the electorate will buy into it before Election Day. Nicely played, Reihan. Bravo!  Readers are encouraged to also review Brad Wilmouth’s ” Joe Klein & Matthews Link Anti-Muslim ‘Attitude’ to ‘Deranged Muslim’ Violence, Small-Town Whites Miss ‘Ethnic Purity’ of Past .”

‘Avatar’ Star Stephen Lang Talks Crazy Fans, Villains And Na’vi Sex

‘I get a lot of people coming up to me and saying, ‘I really hate you,’ ‘ actor says of his villainous character. By Eric Ditzian Stephen Lang Photo: MTV News Nine months after “Avatar” first came out and Stephen Lang found himself in the middle of a globe-blanketing PR campaign, the 58-year-old actor is getting a kick out of doing it all over again. Following the $2.4 billion success of its original release, James Cameron’s “Avatar” is headed back to theaters on Friday, August 27, and Lang is back doing the interview circuit, amiable as always, in stark contrast to his scenery-chewing, do-not-cross-me villain in the 3-D blockbuster, Colonel Miles Quaritch. Stopping by the MTV newsroom recently, Lang chatted about the new footage in the “Avatar” special edition , how his career has changed in the last year and some of the crazy fans he encounters these days. MTV : How’s it feel to be back in the world of Pandora? Stephen Lang : Everybody’s entitled to a victory lap! Above and beyond that, there has been this hankering for more information about this world that Jim created, and Jim is responsive to that and excited to bring back some of the footage it was probably painful for him to cut in the first place. MTV : Have you gone back and seen the new footage? Lang : Yesterday, I viewed all the new stuff. I was surprised at how emotional it was, just to reenter the world and to be reminded what an extraordinary period in my life this has been. I’ve been doing other things and “Avatar” subsided for a while and it’s been a lot of fun for it to rise up again. MTV : Is there any new footage from Colonel Quaritch to look forward to? Lang : There are bits and pieces of me. There’s a little bit more of my fighting, there’s a little bit more of my black-heartedness. There’s still plenty of Quaritch scenes that are somewhere else. MTV : Yeah, I know you guys filmed a ton of stuff way back when. Were you hoping any of that got picked and given the finishing treatment? Lang : I think that several scenes like that may well be on the DVD that comes out with lots of additional things. What Jim wanted to do here is showcase the planet itself — the creatures, the landscape. You see some creatures that you hadn’t seen before, and they’re stunning. There’s a love scene. MTV : I was going to ask you about that — the extended Na’vi sex scene. Lang : There’s an extended Na’vi sex scene, but that doesn’t cover it. It’s a very sensual and sensitive and sort of erotic scene. It’s the ultimate blue movie, you dig what I’m saying? But there’s no sex scene between Quaritch and [Sigourney Weaver’s] Grace or anyone else, which is unfortunate. MTV : How have things changed for you, personally and professionally, since the movie came out? Lang : I don’t think that personally they’ve changed so much. I’m pretty set or formed. I’ve been kicking around a long time. I think I probably am happier than I was. I feel quite satisfied. I think every actor wants to be part of something that can be considered a piece of cinema in a significant way, and I feel that way with “Avatar.” I think professionally it certainly has goosed things for me. There are more interesting opportunities. MTV : Are you getting a lot of the villain roles? Lang : Some villains come across my desk. I read them. Of course, after doing Quaritch, who I admit is the villain of the piece, you tend to compare everything to that, and I don’t want to repeat myself, or I don’t want to do a pale reflection or imitation of myself. I like to think I have range as an actor. I’d really like to get the girl. And by “get the girl,” I don’t mean kill her! MTV : Have you had any interactions with wacky fans? Anyone screaming at you on the street, “You’re not in Kansas anymore”? Lang : I get a lot of people coming up to me and saying, “I really hate you.” And they say it in the nicest possible way and I accept it. It’s the people who come up to you and say, “I really liked your character. Man, he was right!” Those are the ones you worry about. Zoe Kravitz, Jason Flemyng, Bill Milner and Morgan Lily were also reportedly added to cast. By Kara Warner January Jones Photo: Mike Coppola/ Getty Images “X-Men: First Class” has added several new names to its cast, according to Deadline Hollywood . Director Michael Vaughn (“Kick-Ass”) and producer Bryan Singer have reportedly lined up “Mad Men” actress January Jones to play telepathic beauty Emma Frost — a role that was previously rumored to belong to “She’s Out of My League” star Alice Eve . Other reported names added are: Zoe Kravitz, daughter of Lenny, who is set to play Angel; Jason Flemyng as Azazel, the father of Nightcrawler; Bill Milner as the young Magneto (Michael Fassbender will play the elder); and Morgan Lily as the young Raven. They join previously announced “First Class” mutants: James McAvoy (Xavier), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Caleb Landry Jones (Banshee), Lucas Till (Havoc) and Edi Gathegi (Darwin). Other players include Kevin Bacon as the villain, Rose Byrne as Xavier’s love interest Moira MacTaggert, and Oliver Platt as the Man in Black. Production is scheduled to begin Monday in London. When MTV News caught up with Vaughn recently, he spoke about his ever-expanding cast. “It doesn’t feel that busy,” Vaughn said regarding any hesitation in cramming too many mutants into the film. “I don’t feel worried about it. I think it will be really cool to see all these guys doing their stuff. I’m very keen that it has a lot of heart, this movie. You understand where these characters have come from, and you obviously know where they’re going, but to see that very important point of their lives where they’re discovering their power and working out their ethical take on what to do with their power is a very interesting story to tell.” How do you feel about the new “X-Men: First Class” additions? Moochele "My Belle" Obama’s New Book…How to Vacation on Only 75,000 Tax Dollars Per Day

White House: Michelle Obama took $75,000 per day lavish vacation on taxpayer dime because one of her friend's father died or something. That $375,000 of taxpayer money that Michell blew in Spain last week? It went to a good cause – a father of one of her 40 friends that went with her had just died. From the Chicago Sun-Times via drudge: Inside story of Michelle's trip. Do not that writer Lynn Sweet is an Obamunist, but perhaps in trying to cover up the lavishness of the vacation with taxpayer money she might have done better not including this: A White House source told me that Blanchard's father passed away and Mrs. Obama was not able to make the funeral at the beginning of July. Blanchard had promised her daughter she would take her to Spain for her birthday. She asked Mrs. Obama and Sasha to come with. (Malia is at overnight camp.) “She felt it was important as a dear friend to do this,” I was told. http://theblogprof.blogspot.com/2010/08/white-house-michelle-obama-took-75000.ht… added by: congoboy

T.I.’s ‘Takers’ Character ‘A More Interesting, Challenged Villain’

Tip talks about his ‘complex character’ in film, due August 27. By Shaheem Reid T.I. Photo: Columbia Pictures T.I. is treacherous. He’s cold, he’s calculating and he’s out for millions. As the character Ghost in the upcoming film “Takers,” the beloved King of the South is all of the above, but he also sneaks in a few hysterical one-liners. It’s these multifaceted aspects that lured him to his role in the film. “I wanted to play a more interesting, challenged villain,” Tip said. “I think Ghost, in the end, is the villain, but initially he’s the guy you feel sorry for. Like, ‘Why you doing Ghost like that?’ He got shot, he went and did time. Now they don’t want to do his job. Why not? Later you find out why. He’s a bit of a complex character.” In “Takers,” T.I. plays one in a crew of bank robbers along with Idris Elba, Hayden Christensen, Paul Walker, Michael Ealy and Chris Brown. Ghost was shot and captured during one of the collective’s heists years ago. Fresh out of the pen, Ghost has the info for a mother lode multimillion-dollar job. The catch is, the group just pulled off a robbery and they like to take at least a year off between jobs. Ghost’s plan is to rob an armored car, but they only have a few days to plan and pull it off. At the film’s Hollywood premiere on Wednesday, Tip said he didn’t get an opportunity to take part in many of the movie’s stunts . “To be candid, they wasn’t allowing me to do many stunts myself due to the circumstance of my personal [troubles],” he said. “I witnessed a lot of them: the explosions, the shoot-outs, the chase scene with Chris. They’re outstanding. “We worked hard,” he added. “I think all of this is just a result of the hard work that was put into the project. Everybody gave 150 percent. Nobody laid back, nobody took off — everybody went hard. This is the result of that.” Related Photos ‘Takers’ Premiere Seizes Hollywood Related Artists T.I.
