Super Bowl Halftime: Madonna Promises ‘Greatest Show On Earth’

Queen of Pop confirms she will be ‘singing three old songs and one new one’ during halftime show. By John Mitchell Madonna at a press conference for the Super Bowl XLVI halftime show on Friday Photo: Getty Images Madonna wowed the crowd with some impromptu moves at a press conference today in Indianapolis, Indiana, readying the world for the spectacle she’s planning for Sunday’s halftime show at Super Bowl XLVI . Intimating that she’s rooting for the New York Giants (she famously got her start and currently resides in New York City, after all), the Queen of Pop complimented Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz on his end-zone salsa dancing, telling reporters, “I have absolutely no criticism of his moves. In fact, he’s inspired me. I’m going to show ’em to you and you tell me what you think.” She then stepped away from the podium and playfully began to salsa , eliciting hoots and applause from the assembled press. “You think he’d approve?” The often-provocative diva also assured curious reporters that her focus was firmly on putting on the best show she could. “The envelope I’m pushing is just for a spectacular show, which I think will entertain all age groups and hopefully will be a feast for the eyes and the ears,” she said. Judging from early glimpses of her reported stage design , there’s no doubt she’s got quite the spectacle planned for Sunday. She also revealed that she’s performing four songs — three classics and her new single, “Give Me All Your Luvin’,” the video for which will be previewed on “American Idol” Thursday (February 2) ahead of the single’s release Friday on iTunes. “I promise I will be singing three old songs and one new one,” Madonna told reporters. If an early leaked set list and photos of rehearsals are any indication, the vintage Madonna songs audiences can expect to hear will be “Vogue,” “Ray of Light” and “Music.” She would not divulge any further details about the show, however, explaining that she didn’t want to “give anything away” because she wants viewers to be ” knocked out of their seats from beginning to end.” “I’m so excited to be here,” a clearly excited Madonna told the crowd. “This is a Midwesterner girl’s dream to be performing at the halftime show.” Making the press rounds ahead of what is certainly one of the biggest performances of her three-decade career, Madonna has not been shy about admitting she is nervous and contentious of how big a deal the Super Bowl is. “Oh my God, I’m so nervous, you have no idea,” Madonna told Anderson Cooper during a pre-taped appearance Thursday on his daytime talk show. “First of all, it’s the Super Bowl. I mean the Super Bowl is kind of like the holy of holies in America right? … I have to put on the greatest show on earth, in the middle of the greatest show on earth. I have eight minutes to set it up and seven minutes to take it down and 12 minutes to put on the greatest show on earth. That’s a lot of pressure.” It sure is. Reese Witherspoon Opens Up About Acting In 1991 MTV Interview

Check out the vintage clip in advance of Tuesday’s ‘MTV First: Reese Witherspoon.’ By Jocelyn Vena Reese Witherspoon in 1991 Photo: MTV News Reese Witherspoon is slated to sit down with MTV News on Tuesday for an exclusive interview and premiere of a previously unseen clip from her upcoming film “This Means War.” The special, “MTV First: Reese Witherspoon,” will air on January 31 at 7:56 p.m. ET on MTV. But before we look to the future, we are going to take a peep at her past. MTV News has uncovered a precious vintage gem, a 1991 interview with the then up-and-comer. “Ever since I was 7,” the already precocious and sassy rookie told MTV News when asked whether she had always had her sights set on a career in Hollywood. “I just thought, I always wanted to do something really outgoing ’cause when I was little I was really kind of quiet, but you know, I’d always be really creative at home and stuff, and finally I started, you know, speaking out and doing little things to impress everybody.” She further explained that once she had decided that acting was something she wanted to do, she took the necessary steps to make sure she’d be ready for fame and stardom. “I started taking little acting classes and improv classes and, you know, [that] turned out to be what I was going to do,” she said. “I was always going to do something really out there, really far away. Does that make any sense? No, not really.” Later mocking herself and her answer, she teased, “That’s nice, Reese. That’s real nice.” Following the on-air “First” segment, Academy Award winner Witherspoon will stay for an additional 30-minute interview on MTV.com with MTV News’ Josh Horowitz. Fans can be part of the action right away by submitting video or text questions starting Monday on MTV.com or via Twitter by using the @MTVNews hashtag #MTVFirst. “This Means War,” the McG-directed comedy-action film, stars Witherspoon as a seductive female dating two of the world’s deadliest CIA operatives (played by Chris Pine and Tom Hardy), whose partnership and friendship are put in jeopardy when they begin to battle for her affections. Instead of talking to her about the love triangle, they try to settle the matter using all of the weapons at their disposal. The film also stars one of Witherspoon’s real-life pals, comedian and “Chelsea Lately” host Chelsea Handler, who gives Reese’s character the terrible advice that she should continue dating both men. REVIEW: Sing Your Song Doesn’t Need to Tease Greatness Out of Harry Belafonte — It’s Already There

It takes at least two things to make a terrific documentary: A great subject and a light but deft touch. Susanne Rostock’s Sing Your Song , which traces the career of Harry Belafonte with a specific focus on the singer and actor’s social activism, certainly has the former — it’s the latter that’s lacking. But if nothing else, Sing Your Song works as a testament to Belafonte’s drive and dedication to causes well outside the usual goals of simply making money. If you don’t know much about Belafonte beyond the fact that he was that great-looking guy who had a hit in the ’50s with “The Banana Boat Song,” Rostock’s documentary is as good a place as any to start. Sing Your Song is simply conceived and constructed: Rostock (making her directing debut, though she’s been editing documentaries for years) uses on-camera interviews with Belafonte, as well as voice-over narration, to frame a selection of television and news clips and still photographs. The story doesn’t need much embellishment: Belafonte was born in Harlem in 1927, though he spent a portion of his childhood with his grandmother, in Jamaica. He served in the Navy during World War II, and afterward became involved, along with his friend Sidney Poitier, with the American Negro Theater. Belafonte also studied acting at the New School, along with Poitier, Marlon Brando, Walter Matthau and Bernie Schwartz (the last better known as Tony Curtis). He began singing in clubs in New York in the early 1950s. And when he saw Huddie Ledbetter on stage one evening, he was inspired to start researching folk music himself, not just purely American folk music, but that of other countries as well — his 1956 album Calypso was the first LP to sell more than 1 million copies. ( Sing Your Song includes a TV clip of ’50s talk-show host Steve Allen passing one framed gold record after another into Belafonte’s arms.) Belafonte appears to have become a social activist without even knowing it, inspiring outrage in an extremely segregated America without even trying. In Robert Rossen’s 1957 Island in the Sun, his character’s romance with a white woman (played by Joan Fontaine) spurred controversy, though it also boosted ticket sales. Racism was still a huge problem — perhaps even a bigger problem — in 1968, when Petula Clark, performing on television with Belafonte, dared to take his arm. The outcry from advertisers and the public was deafening. Sing Your Song suggests that all of these experiences helped shape Belafonte’s political sensibility, goading him into action instead of just accepting injustice. Rostock includes interviews with significant figures of the civil rights movement, among them Julian Bond, who explains how much it meant to see Belafonte on television in the 1950s: “You’d call your neighbor – ‘Colored on TV!’ It was so rare.” And Belafonte himself explains how he became drawn to the civil rights cause: Martin Luther King Jr. set up a meeting with him, assuring him it wouldn’t take long. Four hours later, Belafonte emerged, ready to do anything necessary to get the point across to the rest of the nation. Sing Your Song is most potent in dealing with Belafonte’s activism during the ’50s and ’60s, becoming murkier and more disorganized when Rostock heads into the Watergate era. It’s not that Belafonte’s work became less visible or less significant at that point, but Rostock presents those years as a blurry laundry list, whirring from Belafonte’s efforts to end hunger in Ethiopia to his anti-Apartheid activities to his involvement in the turmoil in Haiti in the mid-1990s. By the last third, Sing Your Song begins to feel more like a promotional film — promoting activism, if nothing else — than a well-rounded portrait. Still, it’s valuable for both the vintage footage Rostock has collected and for the observations provided by Belafonte, who is as charming, handsome and persuasive in his mid-80s as he ever was. When he speaks about his recent efforts to end gang violence in Los Angeles, he says, “I’m still looking to fix these things I thought we fixed 50 years ago.” Retirement, apparently, isn’t an option. Linday Lohan’s Playboy Photos Leak

Mag tells MTV News ‘someone took photos of Lindsay’s pictorial in an advanced copy of the January/February issue.’ By Jocelyn Vena Lindsay Lohan’s leaked Playboy cover Photo: Playboy First, Lindsay Lohan’s Playboy cover leaked , and days later, a set of photos set to appear in the January/February issue hit the Net when Perez Hilton posted the photos on his blog Friday (December 9). The photos clearly pay homage to Marilyn Monroe and her vintage Playboy pictorial. Lohan, donning little more than red lipstick (and, in one pic, a fur shrug), poses nude in front of a red curtain. The actress was photographed in soft light as she poses on red couches and bedding, in various sexy positions. The photos were shot in November in Los Angeles, in between Lohan’s court dates and legal issues . In an interview with “The Insider,” mom Dina said the pictorial would be “tastefully done.” “She’s been working in front of the camera with Ford Models since she was a little girl,” she added. “So she kinda knows how to work that.” A rep for Playboy addressed the latest leak to MTV News in a statement: “Someone took photos of Lindsay’s pictorial in an advanced copy of the January/February issue. They posted the photos online without permission. We are not releasing any official images or information until December 15.” Lohan is set to do an interview with Ellen DeGeneres on her December 15 talk show to about the pictorial. It was originally planned that the cover and an additional image would debut on the show. A source told TMZ that Playboy execs are “freaking out” about the leak. The magazine is slated to hit newsstands next week, and the magazine allegedly printed thousands of extra copies. They fear the leak could hurt sales and they had been banking on the fact that this would be the mag’s best-seller of the year. The actress was reportedly paid nearly $1 million for the shoot.

30 Seconds To Mars Call Record-Setting Show A ‘Thank You’

Band will enter the Guinness Book of World Records with Wednesday’s show, their 300th in support of This Is War. By James Montgomery Jared Leto of 30 Seconds to Mars Photo: MTV News Like most things involving his band, Jared Leto’s idea to gun for the Guinness Book of World Records was born out of one part determination, one part mania — and a whole lot of sleep deprivation. “It was my idea. I’m the guilty party here,” he laughed. “But people started to ask us, with an incredulous look, What the f— is wrong with you? or they would kind of look at us and be like, ‘You guys are still on tour?’ And it started to seep in that maybe this was a little bit crazy. And then I remember as a kid, I was a big fan of the Guinness Book of World Records … so I just started thinking, Maybe we should take a shot at it. ” So they did, and on Wednesday night (December 7), with a sold-out concert at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom, 30 Seconds to Mars will officially set a Guinness World Record for most shows performed during a single album cycle. It’s the 300th they’ve played in support of their This Is War album, and yes, though they’re very tired, they’re also quite honored to hold the record for the world’s longest-running road dogs. “I used to love the [Guinness] Book, you know, world’s fattest twins or world’s longest fingernails, and so it’s fun to think we’re a part of something that was a part of our childhood,” Leto said. “Plus, it’s Mars history, and something fun for us to do and another chance for us to stop, take note, say thank you to the people that have shared the journey and helped to take our dreams and make them reality.” Though the record-setting show is sold out, fans from around the world can still witness the band make history through VyRT.com , an interactive site that will stream the Hammerstein gig in all its glory. Once the show is completed, 30STM will play a pair of low-key benefit performances at New York’s St. Peter’s church, and then, finally, their schedules will be clear. And no, they’re not quite sure what they’ll do with all that free time. “I think the most time we’ve had off over the past two years has been, maybe, two weeks, and we shot a video during that time,” Leto laughed. “It’s almost like taking away your wife or newborn baby and then saying, ‘OK, go and live another life.’ It’s become such a deep, intrinsic part of our daily grind. … It may not be as easy as we’ve all been assuming, but whatever it is … it will be a step towards a really different future.” A future that includes more Mars music? Well, that remains to be seen. For this week, at least, 30 Seconds to Mars aren’t thinking about what lies ahead; they’re remembering everything that’s led them to this point. After all, it’s been quite a journey, to say the very least. “It’s a new beginning; that’s always really strange, exciting, uncomfortable but important. We all know you close one door and another one can open, but I think the future of 30 Seconds to Mars, as undetermined as things may be right now, it’s still very exciting,” Leto said. “There are a lot of projects under that banner; music is one, and we’re also really grateful, and this week is about sharing that with everyone as we say goodbye and thank everyone for the most amazing journey we’ve ever experienced in our lives. We’ll always look back at this time as one of the most important and impactful periods of our creative lives, ever.” Congratulate 30 Seconds to Mars on their record in the comments below! Tupac Sex Tape: Apparently Real, Absurd

Tupac Shakur. He was killed 15 years ago , but we’re still talking about him. That’s a sign that you’ve left your mark on pop culture, although we never expected we’d be discussing a new sex tape of the late rapper that surfaced. In the five-minute video, Tupac is receiving oral sex from some girl … while rapping and dancing with groupies in a living room during a house party. Here’s the rundown on the Tupac sex tape courtesy of TMZ … This sex tape story is ridiculous, and yet unsurprising . Tupac walks into a room, pants down to his ankles, shirtless, head shaved, wearing some big ass chains. He pulls one of the women toward him. She begins performing oral sex. As she does her thing, an unreleased song of Tupac’s is playing. He sings along and he dances, wiggling his hips. As the woman services Tupac, who’s holding a cocktail in one hand and a blunt in another, Money B from Digital Underground walks over to him. Tupac puts his cocktail arm around his boy Money B, continues singing and dancing … and the woman never stops doing her thing down there. As the tape ends it appears “he’s ready to begin sexual intercourse” (use your imagination there) with the lucky lady. But we do not get to see that. It’s unclear if there’s another 2Pac sex tape continuing the action. The person in possession of this tape is trying to release it. We obviously remember him as a great talent, but who knew ‘Pac was a multi-tasker.
