Roger Ebert’s Death (1942-2013): Forefather Of Movie Blogging Passes Away

I’ve never been much of an obituary-writing guy, but Roger Ebert   deserves to be celebrated.  So, rather than add to the hundreds of thousands of words that are about to be spent reexamining his remarkable life and career following his death today, I’m going to make one observation about his contribution to movie culture and then leave you with a clip that, I hope, will make you smile when you think of him. My introduction to Ebert, and his equally mouthy partner in movie criticism, Gene Siskel , came via their thoroughly enjoyable syndicated television show At The Movies , which began as a PBS series in 1975, Sneak Previews , and eventually became Siskel and Ebert and The Movies  from 1986 until 1999. (The year Siskel died.)  And though I’m quite aware that a) these guys were operating on television and b) blog culture was a long way off,  there’s a real argument to be made that Siskel and Ebert are the real forefathers of the movie blog culture that exists today. Siskel and Ebert: Proto-Movie Bloggers Each week, they candidly curated a subjective list of movies that were opening that week.  They told the television audience which films were worth seeing and why,  which ones should be ignored, and which movies were worth actively seeking out at the video store if they weren’t shown at the local cinema. And, by the way, their thumbs up or down system of rating movies was the proto-Rotten Tomatoes . As Roadside Attractions tweeted on Thursday afternoon: “Siskel & Ebert almost single-thumbedly made Hoop Dreams a thing. If they’d never done anything else, they’d still be indie film legends.” Siskel and Ebert lavished attention on obscure movies;  they taught their audience how to look at crowd pleasers with a critical eye, and they fought and bickered with each other in a way that made great television. Their TV show had all of the elements of a great blog:  curation, information, perspective and entertainment.  And they did it better than a lot of bloggers are doing it now. Rest in peace, Roger Ebert. You, too, Gene Siskel. This is how I’ll remember you: bickering brilliantly like Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?  Siskel and Ebert At Each Other’s Throats Follow Frank DiGiacomo on  Twitter. Shain Gandee Autopsy Confirms Cause of Death

For the first time since Shain Gandee died early yesterday morning, authorities have spoken out on the accident that took the life of this 21-year old and two others. “Foul play has been ruled out,” Kanawha County Commissioner Kent Carper of West Virginia told People, while an autopsy has confirmed yesterday’s hypothesis: All three victims died from c arbon monoxide poisoning. As previously reported: Ganee was last seen around 3 a.m. on Sunday, telling people he was going four-wheeling with his uncle David. The bodies of Shain, David and an unidentified woman were found in a Ford Bronco yesterday, submerged up to its windows in mud. In response, Shain’s cousin is organizing a mud run tomorrow to raise funeral funds . And the mayor of Charleston, West Virginia has called on MTV to cancel Buckwild . Wrote Gandee’s cousin, Ashley Gandee Lewis, on Facebook: “The family feels that Shain died peacefully in his sleep without pain or suffering.”

Britney Spears and David Lucado: Holding Hands! So Happy!

Britney Spears’ rumored boyfriend David Lucado can drop “rumored” from his title. The duo was not shy about showing their affection for one another when they were seen out and about in Thousand Oaks, Calif., on Friday, doin’ some shopping. Walking across the parking lot at The Oaks, the pair laughed and held hands – their first known-on-film PDA and one clearly designed as a coming-out of sorts. “She was here with her guy and she shopped for quite a while,” an onlooker says of the ex -X Factor judge. “She looked good! They were just casual and normal .” Britney Spears rocked a black-and-pink fitted frock with brown sandals and a pair of gold-rimmed aviator sunglasses, while David Lucado was his casual, cool self. The pop superstar’s new man is reportedly just a regular guy. He works at a law firm and does not have any show business ties or money to speak of. So, in short, he’s perfect? “He’s a good boy. He’s from a good family,” a family source says of the Virginia native, Spears’ first beau since she called off her engagement to Jason Trawick. “David grew up on a farm. He does alright for himself but he is just very nice and down to earth. What you see is what you get. He’s into restoring old cars and golf.” And apparently Britney Spears.

Quantico Shooting: Three Killed at Marine Base

A Marine killed a male and female colleague in a shooting at Quantico, a military base in northern Virginia, before killing himself, according to reports. The tragedy began with a shooting around 11 p.m. Thursday that left one dead at Marine Base Quantico, base spokesman Lt. Agustin Solivan said. That shooting led to a standoff between authorities and the suspect, who was barricaded in barracks at the base. Authorities entered early Friday. They found the suspect dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound along with a second victim. Solivan did not say what prompted authorities to enter the barracks. No names were immediately released but Solivan said the suspect and both victims were Marines. Authorities believe the suspect was a staff member at the officer candidate school. Solivan said the shooting was isolated and there were no other casualties. The base was on lockdown after the shooting but the lockdown was lifted early Friday. During the lockdown, residents were warned over a loudspeaker to stay inside. About 37 miles south of D.C., Quantico also home to the FBI’s training academy. In 2010, it was one of several targets of an ex-Marine reservist who, during five nighttime shootings, fired on military targets including the Pentagon.

Michael Burford, "Bluefoot" From Buckwild, Arrested For DUI

The cast of MTV’s Buckwild has been … well, goin’ buckwild lately. This time it’s Michael Burford, a.k.a. “Bluefoot,” getting arrested. The reality star got popped Friday morning in Charleston, W.V. Police say Burford was pulled over for speeding and appeared to be drinking. He failed a field sobriety test and had a blood alcohol level greater than .15. That makes it aggravated DUI case under West Virginia law … a.k.a. worse than regular DUI. He was TRASHED in other words, if that reading was correct. Co-star Salwa Amin was also arrested this week, for drug possession with intent to deliver … quality role models MTV picked out with this bunch, no doubt.

SMH: Police Chief Who Cosigned Chris Brown’s Community Hours As “Legitimate” Resigns

SMH. Breezy shole is gone need more people now! Via NY Post: The embattled police chief of Richmond, Va., resigned today, after he was accused of sloppy work that allowed Chris Brown to allegedly fake his way through community service. Bryan Norwood, who had been his city’s top cop since 2008, came under intense scrutiny last week when Los Angeles prosecutors said R&B crooner Brown logged hours of work in Richmond that he couldn’t have possibly done. Brown was sentenced to 180 days — or 1,440 hours — of labor in his 2009 plea-bargain deal for savagely assaulting girlfriend Rihanna. After doing 581 hours in LA County, Brown was given permission to finish his debt to society in his home state of Virginia, where he claimed to have finished all court-ordered work. “As of today I’ve accepted the resignation of Bryan Norwood from his post as chief of police for the city of Richmond,” Mayor Dwight Jones announced. “He has offered leadership that has brought us a little bit further in our endeavors to improve public safety. In many ways the Richmond Police Department and the city is better off because of his dedication.” Ray Tarasovic, who had previously served as Richmond’s assistant chief, was talked out of retirement and elevated to Norwood’s old job. “We’ve reached, however, a mutual agreement, at this time, that his time as Richmond police chief has come to an end,” Jones said of Norwood. “We certainly wish Chief Norwood much luck in his endeavors going forward.” SMH.
