Bret Michaels Talks Losing Virginity On ‘When I Was 17’

‘It involved a motorcycle, a blanket and an 8-track,’ the Poison frontman admits on Saturday’s episode. By Eric Ditzian Photo: MTV News It’s been a harrowing but, ultimately, hopeful month for Bret Michaels , who suffered a near-fatal brain hemorrhage in late April, only to recover enough that he was able to tape an interview with Oprah Winfrey , airing Wednesday (May 19). Michaels is also set to appear on Sunday’s finale of “The Celebrity Apprentice.” It’s a dramatic turn of events for the Poison frontman, but it seems the 47-year-old star has always had a way of putting a theatrical spin on whatever he pursues. “I lost my virginity around 17. It involved a motorcycle, a blanket — I’m going to admit it — it was an 8-track pop-tape player at the Mechanicsburg Fish Hatchery,” Michaels reveals during the new episode of MTV’s “When I Was 17,” which airs Saturday at 11 a.m. We take it all this added up to one heck of a romantic gesture back in Pennsylvania in the early ’80s. Michaels, though, considered himself lucky to even be in a position to lose his virginity, given his face was covered in pimples at the time. “I worked at Bob’s Big Boy,” he explained. “I was the ultimate busboy, and eventually I got to the ultimate job, which was deep-fry cook. I’ve already got an acne problem, and now the grease flying up on my face isn’t really helping the situation.” Zits or not, Michaels had a way with the ladies. He also had a feeling that he wouldn’t be working at a fast-food joint for long. “I had a couple buddies there,” Michaels said. “We loved to raise hell. We’d go out, hang out by the dumpster on our break, because that was the cool thing to do. You make it work. You had to tell yourself, ‘It’s going to get better than this.’ ” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Kevin Jonas, Bret Michaels and Katharine McPhee — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV.

Lee DeWyze’s Early Albums: A Boy And His Guitar Grow Up

Pre-‘American Idol’ work displays singer/songwriter’s progress, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery Lee DeWyze Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Fox Late last week, I received a package from something called Wuli Records, a vaguely mysterious-sounding Chicago label with a fancy dragon logo. Intrigued — since, you know, I love dragons — I opened it, and out fell a pair of CDs from a singer/songwriter named Lee DeWyze. I have never heard of him, but I decided to give them a listen, since he looked like a nice guy in the press photo. I guess I had a few hours to kill or something. Of course, the second-half of that paragraph isn’t exactly true (since, you know, DeWyze is probably going to win “American Idol,” a show watched by some 20 million people every week, myself included), but I decided to pretend like it was, for one day at least. Erasing everything I know about him from my memory (which isn’t all that much — didn’t he work in a paint store or something?), I sat down and listened to DeWyze’s first two albums. After all, before he was a front-runner on America’s favorite singing competition, he was just another kid with an acoustic guitar, a batch of songs and a dream of making it big. I suppose it was my way of trying to get to know him better or at least trying to latch on to this fairly nebulous thing his fans keep e-mailing me about. What can I say? I guess I had a few hours to kill or something. So, ignore everything I just wrote. Let’s talk about this DeWyze kid — he could be big someday, or at least have a song or two on adult-contemporary radio, provided he works hard enough. His first album — which, conveniently enough, came bundled with a huge sticker declaring it “The Debut Album From Lee DeWyze” — is called So I’m Told, and it’s very much a first album. Released in 2007 and produced by Ryan T. McGuire (who, Wikipedia tells me, is/was a member of the Virginia Gentlemen, “the oldest a cappella group at the University of Virginia”), it’s basically 11 gently strummed acoustic numbers, with DeWyze singing like a mushier-mouthed Dave Matthews (particularly on the song “Love and Misery”). None of it is particularly grabbing, though it bears mention that the silly wah-wah guitar frippery on “Red Rover” manages to get a rise (it also sounds a whole lot like Edie Brickell & New Bohemians’ “What I Am”), and DeWyze’s duet with an unnamed female singer (looking at the back of the album for a name, perhaps it’s “Erin McGuire,” who’s credited as an “Additional Recording Engineer”) on “The Problem Is You” is genuinely pretty. The problem here is, DeWyze doesn’t show anything special. Sure, his voice is nice enough, and he’s a perfectly serviceable player, but he doesn’t do much to distance himself from the 10 bazillion dudes who do this same kind of thing every Tuesday at open-mic night. Oh, and the album artwork is kind of boring too. It’s on DeWyze’s second album — or, as the sticker on the front puts it, “The New Album” — Slumberland where he really shows signs of distancing himself from the pack. Released in 2009, it’s proof that DeWyze has been practicing and growing as a musician and songwriter. Opening with “So What Now” — a hushed, dreamlike number featuring a humming, backtracked guitar bit, rattling tabla and a sitar (!) — the album rolls right into the strummy, feedback-laced “All Fall Down” and then a roiling slide-guitar tune called “Annabelle,” each showcasing his newfound sorta-growl and swampy, sweaty phrasing techniques. There’s a cocksure swagger here, and yes, DeWyze still sounds a lot like Matthews, but he’s also coming into his own. I could see him winning a televised singing competition someday. Thematically, as the title implies, Slumberland seems to be loosely based on the concept of sleep, or at least dreams. “Princess” opens with the line “Do you remember sleeping on the floor?” “Where You Lie” begins with “Under your bed, where you lie your head.” And, shoot, there’s a tune called “Another Sleep Song” on here too. Sonically, there’s plenty of opaque, treated guitars, wooshing, windswept slide guitar, winsome strings and even some electronic beats. I’ll go ahead and call it a concept album, because, hey, it’s not like anyone is ever gonna hear it. The point is, I would probably actually buy Slumberland, or at least download it off some torrent site. There’s an admirable level of growth on display here, in just about every conceivable way — not to mention the level of ambition he shows by releasing what amounts to a conceptual piece. Even the artwork — a drawing of a tree — is much improved this time out. I don’t know what the future holds for DeWyze, but if the leap he made from one album to the next is any indication, things look bright indeed. Sure, he’s still just a singer/songwriter (a genus I will freely admit to loathing), but there’s something here, to be certain. Now, if only he could find some way to raise his profile. Then the sky would really be the limit. Questions? Comments? Hit me up at BTTS@MTVStaff.com . Related Photos Lee DeWyze: From Illinois Boy To ‘American Idol’ Star

Two activist receive $100,000 bail for non-violent protest at Massey Regional HQ

We teach our children to care for the earth. We teach them to defend their home and we say that the flag of these United States of America unifies us as a nation, that our country is their home. We teach them to take responsibility and speak out boldly against the tyranny of injustice and evil men. And them we jail them and label them as terrorists. It's just as likely that Bill Massey is a mass murderer. It is just as likely that the deaths of 29 miners in West Virginia were acts of murder funded by JPMorgan Chase in an effort to silence a growing internal resistance to Mountain Top Removal Mining or a group of miners intent on speaking out against repeated Massey Energy safety violations, the modern equivalent of burning them in a church, a longstanding tradition of West Virginia coal mine operators. A $100,000 suggests collaboration between Massey Energy and the West Virginia judicial system. It represents a war crime, an atrocity committed by felons against the children on the front lines of the Coal War. Who are we in America to stand in collusion by allowing evil men to prosper while our sons and daughters face brutal attacks for peaceful acts of courage? Who are we to sit in silent witness to the brutal murder of 29 miners and the weeping of their sons and daughters and wives and mothers? EmmaKate Martin and Benjamin Bryant are to be commended not condemned for their actions. They defended our mountains against the true eco-terrorists. They acted bravely just like we taught them to in school, to defend American soil against all enemies, foreign and domestic and we made it a crime of the highest order at a time when they should be decorated as heroes. http://itsgettinghotinhere.org/2010/05/17/two-activist-receive-100000-bail-for-n… added by: Willowguy

2010 Miss USA Title Was Crowned To Miss Michigan

MISS USA title was finally crowned at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino along the Las Vegas Strip. Newly crowned 24-year old Arab-American from Michigan.  Rima Fakih beat out all other 50 beautiful women representing their state for the much coveted crown for this year.  She outshone everyone after she carried herself confidently in an orange and gold bikini then wore a strapless white gown. And during the question-and-answer portion, she wittily answered that health insurance should also cover birth control pills. Fakih is a Lebanese immigrant wherein her family practices both Christian and Muslim religions.  They had moved to United States when she was still a baby.  Fakih was raised in New York, attended a Catholic school.  Then in 2003, she and her family moved to Michigan. It was not stated whether Fakih was the first Arab-American, Muslim, or immigrant to win the Miss USA crown title. Fakih told reporters she sold her car after graduating college in Michigan to help pay for her run in the Miss Michigan USA pageant. She said she believed she had the title on Sunday after glancing at pageant owner Donald Trump as she awaited the results with the first runner-up, Miss Oklahoma USA Morgan Elizabeth Woolard. “That’s the same look that he gives them when he says, ‘You’re hired,’” on Trump’s reality show “The Apprentice,” she said. “She’s a great girl,” said Trump, who owns the pageant with NBC in a joint venture. In a moment that was replayed during the broadcast, Fakih nearly fell while finishing her walk in her gown because of the length of its train. But she made it without a spill and went on to win. “I did it here, I better not do it at Miss Universe,” she said. “Modeling does help, after all.” Fakih replaces Miss USA 2009 Kristen Dalton and won a spot representing the United States this summer in the 2010 Miss Universe pageant. She also gets a one-year lease in a New York apartment with living expenses, an undisclosed salary, and various health, professional and beauty services. During the interview portion, Fakih was asked whether she thought birth control should be paid for by health insurance, and she said she believed it should because it’s costly. “I believe that birth control is just like every other medication even though it’s a controlled substance,” Fakih said. Woolard handled the night’s toughest question, about Arizona’s new immigration law. Woolard said she supports the law, which requires police enforcing another law to verify a person’s immigration status if there’s “reasonable suspicion” that the person is in the country illegally. She said she’s against illegal immigration but is also against racial profiling. “I’m a huge believer in states’ rights. I think that’s what’s so wonderful about America,” Woolard said. “So I think it’s perfectly fine for Arizona to create that law.” “The Office” actor Oscar Nunez was booed as he asked the question and asked the audience to wait until he finished the question before they reacted. The panel of judges came up with the questions themselves. Miss Virginia USA Samantha Evelyn Casey was the second runner-up, Miss Colorado USA Jessica Hartman was third runner-up, and Miss Maine USA Katherine Ashley Whittier was the fourth runner-up. Most of the field of contestants from all 50 states and the District of Columbia were eliminated just after the pageant began and the entire group danced onstage to “TiK ToK” by Ke$ha. A panel of eight judges, including NBA star Carmelo Anthony, Treasure Island casino-hotel owner Phil Ruffin and Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir, were judging the girls throughout the night. After 15 contestants strutted in swimsuits, five were eliminated. Another five were eliminated after the evening gown competition. Miss Nebraska USA Belinda Renee Wright won the Miss Congeniality award, roughly one week after her father was killed in a farm accident. Miss Alabama USA Audrey Moore won Miss Photogenic after an online fan vote. The pageant aired live to East Coast viewers on NBC. The competition, which is not affiliated with the Miss America pageant, was hosted by celebrity chef Curtis Stone and NBC correspondent Natalie Morales. 2010 Miss USA Title Was Crowned To Miss Michigan is a post from: Daily World Buzz Continue reading

Chris Brown Plays To Packed House At Virginia Benefit Concert

‘Everyone has to do their part,’ singer said before show, which will provide aid to Haiti and to needy in Virginia. By Jayson Rodriguez Chris Brown performs at “Virginia Stand Up! A Call to Action” benefit for continued relief in Haiti Photo: MTV News RICHMOND, Virginia — Chris Brown headlined the “Virginia Stand Up! A Call to Action” benefit concert on Saturday night, and the superstar singer couldn’t have been more giving, doing his best to please the packed house. “Can I slow it down for the ladies?” Brown asked the shrieking audience, comprised mostly of females and local supporters. “I mean really slow it down.” With that, the energetic crooner jumped off the stage and walked through the crowd singing “Say Goodbye” to his fans, shaking as many adoring hands as he could along the way. “There’s never a right time to say goodbye,” he sang. “But we know that we got to go our separate ways.” Things at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Siegel Center were just getting started, though. Brown ran through selections from all three of his albums, including early hits from his 2005 self-titled debut such as the chipper “Yo (Excuse Me Miss)” and “Gimme That.” T-Pain , who performed earlier in the night (as did Trey Songz , Keri Hilson , Mario , Tank and Ryan Leslie ) joined Brown for his guest spot on the booming “Kiss Kiss.” Brown, who celebrated his 21st birthday earlier this month, exercised his status as a more mature artist by bringing a young woman onstage with him. The fan, decked out in a snug dress, ditched her high heels and sat in a reclining chair on the stage as Brown serenaded her. The hometown Brown quickly transitioned into the steamy “Take You Down,” off Exclusive, removing his jean jacket (he was shirtless underneath) and straddling his guest for some enthusiastic dance moves that would have made Bobby Brown blush. The event was part of a charitable mission organized by Brown to help with continued relief efforts in Haiti following the devastating January earthquake. The singer partnered with the Greater Richmond Chapter of the American Red Cross and the Central Virginia Food Bank and recruited a slew of hip-hop and R&B stars to help out. Lil Wayne prot

Couple Arrested For Asking For Directions

“In jail for eight hours — sleeping on a concrete floor next to a toilet,” Kelly said. “It was a nightmare,” Brook said. “I was in there thinking I was just dreaming and waiting to wake up.” (wbaltv.com) http://www.wbaltv.com/news/9229472/detail.html BALTIMORE — Baltimore City police arrested a Virginia couple over the weekend after they asked an officer for directions. WBAL-TV 11 News I-Team reporter David Collins said Joshua Kelly and Llara Brook, of Chantilly, Va., got lost leaving an Orioles game on Saturday. Collins reported a city officer arrested them for trespassing on a public street while they were asking for directions . “In jail for eight hours — sleeping on a concrete floor next to a toilet,” Kelly said. “It was a nightmare,” Brook said. “I was in there thinking I was just dreaming and waiting to wake up.” Collins reported it was a nightmare ending to a nearly perfect day. He said the couple went to a company picnic and watched the Orioles beat Kansas City. It was their first trip to Camden Yards and asked two people for directions to Interstate 95 South when they left. Collins said somehow they ended up in the Cherry Hill section of south Baltimore. Hopelessly lost, relief melted away concerns after they spotted a police vehicle. “I said, 'Thank goodness, could you please get us to 95?” Kelly said. “The first thing that she said to us was no — you just ran that stop sign, pull over,” Brook said. “It wasn't a big deal. We'll pay the stop sign violation, but can we have directions?” “What she said was 'You found your own way in here, you can find your own way out.'” Kelly said. Collins said the couple spotted another police vehicle and flagged that officer down for directions. But Officer Natalie Preston, a six-year veteran of the force, intervened. “That really threw us for a loop when she stepped in between our cars,” Kelly said. “(She) said my partner is not going to step in front of me and tell you directions if I'm not.” Collins reported the circumstances got worse. Kelly pulled 40 feet forward parking next to a curb and put his flashers on while Brook was on the phone to her father hoping he could help her with directions. Both her parents are police officers in the Harrisburg, Pa., area. “(Brook's father) was in the middle of giving us directions when the officer screeched up behind us and got out of the car and asked me to step out. I obeyed,” Kelly said. “I obeyed everything — stepped out of the car, put my hands behind my back, and the next thing I know, I was getting arrested for trespassing.” “By this time, I was completely in tears,” Brook said. “I said, 'Ma'am, you know, we just need your help. We are not trying to cause you any trouble. I'm not leaving him here.' What she did was walk over to my side of the car and said, 'Ok, we are taking you downtown, too.'” Collins said the couple was released from jail without being charged with anything. Brook is now concerned the arrest may complicate a criminal background check she's going through in her job as a child care worker. Collins said police left Kelly's car unlocked and the windows down at the impound lot. He reported a cell phone charger, pair of sunglasses and 20 CDs were stolen. Baltimore City police said they are looking into the incident. added by: learner1776
