Sons Of Sylvia Make Splash In ‘American Idol’ Debut

‘Love Left to Lose’ brotherly trio grew up on the road with preacher parents. By Gil Kaufman Sons of Sylvia’s Ashley Clark performs on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: FOX They’ve been jamming together their whole lives, though they never really heard secular music until they left home. They grew up on the road with their itinerant preacher parents, playing worship tunes before forming a brotherly trio and switching from the sacred to the (slightly more) profane. Kings of Leon, right? No, actually, Sons of Sylvia . The Virginia-bred Clark brothers — lead singer/fiddler Ashley, guitarist/mandolin player Adam and resonator guitarist Austin — had their major coming-out party on Wednesday night’s “American Idol” results show, but the trio has been prepping for their turn in the spotlight for more than three years. Introduced by longtime pal Carrie Underwood, the band performed their country rock anthem “Love Left to Lose,” and after a show that featured such stars as Rascal Flatts, Shakira and Lady Antebellum, on Thursday morning (April 29) it was Sons of Sylvia who were among the most searched topics on the Internet. “A lot of people don’t know who we are,” said youngest Clark brother Austin, 26, on Wednesday afternoon, just hours before the pre-taped performance aired. He said he hoped that the world would be interested in the band come Thursday morning and that new fans would run out and buy the boys’ just-released debut, Revelation. “I hope so,” he said from a West Virginia tour date opening for Underwood. “I’m just taking it one day at a time. I don’t know what to expect. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity and I’m freaked out. I love it.” After the dissolution of their family band the Clark Family Experience in 2007, the trio — who have eight other siblings — rebranded themselves the Clark Brothers and quickly went on to win the first and only season of the “Idol” spin-off “The Next Great American Band.” The win earned them a recording contract with Universal South Records (they later switched to Interscope and changed their name) and a management deal with 19 Entertainment, but it would be several more years before they got their break. Longtime pals with Underwood, they performed on the song “What Can I Say” from her third album, Play On, and toured with her soon after her win on the fourth season of “Idol.” They also toured with SHeDaisy and logged time working on tracks for Southern rapper Bubba Sparxxx. But years after Ashley shared what Austin called a “really crappy” apartment in Nashville with the Clarks’ second cousin, then unknown songwriter leader Ryan Tedder, the new superstar OneRepublic leader returned the favor by co-writing and producing “Love Left to Lose,” helping to boost them into the spotlight. After pushing aside some of the more bluegrass-leaning aspects of their sound in favor of a more expansive, anthemic rock sound on the album, Austin said the group decided a name change was in order. “From the point of winning the show and making the record, we evolved so much,” he said. “We were just a three-piece acoustic band on the show and when we got to do what we wanted in the studio it evolved so much that we felt it was right to change the name.” Like KOL — who, it’s worth noting, the Clark boys know after traveling in the same preacher kid circles as youngsters — the Clarks decided to pay homage to a formative figure with their new name. “Yeah, it’s our mother’s name,” said Austin proudly. “We wanted to do something nice for her. She had 11 kids, so they’re angels!” Both of their parents had a formative influence on their musical upbringing. Dad Fredrick taught them how to play instruments and mom was a church singer, but Austin said the siblings really developed their musical chops by backing up their folks in church and picking up licks from professional pickers while playing bluegrass festivals as kids. After their parents kept them away from rock and roll when they were kids, Austin described discovering the Beatles and Rolling Stones when he left home as “like coming out of the stone age.” It’s been a long road, but for now he’s just basking in the glow of the “Idol” exposure and looking forward to being on the road with Underwood through December. “We’re brothers and I’ve been doing this since I was born,” he said. “If not on the stage, then sitting on the couch at home just trading licks. … It feels like a childhood dream as far as: start a band, get a record out and being on tour. All of this is actually happening. I wake up every day baffled.” Related Videos ‘American Idol’ In 60 Seconds Related Photos ‘American Idol’ Season Nine Performances Related Artists Sons Of Sylvia

Chris Brown To Headline Virginia Benefit Concert

Virginia Stand Up! A Call to Action will also feature Trey Songz, T-Pain, Keri Hilson, more, on May 15. By Jocelyn Vena Chris Brown Photo: Kristian Dowling/ Getty Images Chris Brown will be hosting and playing a benefit show this May. The singer, who recently rallied to get young people to fill out their 2010 census , will be joined by Keri Hilson, Trey Songz, T-Pain, Ryan Leslie, Mario and Juelz Santana for the show set to take place on May 15 in Richmond, Virginia. The show, called Virginia Stand Up! A Call to Action, will help benefit the Greater Richmond Chapter of the American Red Cross for their efforts in Haiti, as well as the Central Virginia Food Bank, which provides food for those in need. Earlier this year, Brown performed on BET’s “SOS: Help for Haiti” telethon. Tickets went on sale Monday (April 19) for the show at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Siegel Center. Not only will proceeds help the organizations involved, but fans who attend the show can bring non-perishable food items for donation. “I wanted to find a way to contribute personally to the ongoing Haitian relief effort and also support an organization that helps people in need in my home state,” Brown said in a statement. “The images I see on television, both in my community and in Haiti, remind me that everyone has to do their part.” Additional performers will be announced in the weeks leading up to the show. In February, at a status hearing stemming from his plea deal for assaulting Rihanna, Superior Court Judge Patricia M. Schnegg said Brown was “doing really well” at completing his sentence. His deal included one year of counseling, 180 days of community labor and five years’ probation. He is due back in court on May 11. Do you think Chris Brown is doing a good job repairing his image since assaulting Rihanna? Talk about it below! Virginia Tech Shooting To Be Remembered With Candlelit Ceremony

It’s been three years since 32 students were gunned down on the campus. By Gil Kaufman Photo: Win McNamee/Getty Images Students on the campus of Virginia Tech University are pausing Friday (April 16) to remember the lives of 32 students who were killed on the school’s campus three years ago in the worst mass school shooting in U.S. history. They will gather Friday evening to light candles and place them next to the 32 limestone blocks commemorating the victims of the massacre in a ceremony that has taken place every year since a troubled lone gunman, student Cho Seung-Hui, killed 32 students and faculty and then himself on April 16, 2007. According to the Washington Post, this year’s ceremony has taken on added significance, because of the upcoming graduation of a number of students on the Blacksburg, Virginia, campus who were freshmen at the time of the incident, an increasingly shrinking group that has taken to calling itself the “4/16 generation.” Those who watched the events unfold, or were on campus at the time, have begun to wonder what will change at the 28,000-student university once the last of the witnesses to the assault leave the grounds and move on with their lives. “It’s inevitable that it’s going to fade a little bit and that it won’t mean as much to the community,” said student-body president Brandon Carroll, 21, who helped pack up the apartment of a friend who was killed by Cho. “If you don’t have that shared bond with other classes, then it’s slowly going to lose its significance.” Some seniors have noticed that there is already a diminished intensity to the day of reflection, with some freshmen seeing it as a day off rather than a time to take stock. The day of remembrance will unfold in a similar fashion to past commemorations, with events around campus highlighting the achievements of the victims and honoring their memory and the cancellation of classes. It began with the lighting of a memorial candle that will burn for 24 hours at midnight on Friday and will include a 3.2-mile run that has 6,000 registrants in honor of the victims. The day off from classes is scheduled to be phased out in 2012, on the fifth anniversary of the incident. Among those paying tribute Friday were Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell and Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, who led a ceremony at the state Capitol that included a moment of silence and the reading of the names of each student and teacher killed in the shooting. The Associated Press reported that McDonnell read a proclamation and said the state would observe Virginia Tech Remembrance Day each April 16 during his four-year term. The ceremony ended with the ringing of a bell 32 times. Officials have not been able to determine what motivated 23-year-old Centreville, Virginia, native Cho Seung-Hui to commit the murder spree, but reports in the aftermath of the incident portrayed him as an intensely lonely young man with violent tendencies who had previous run-ins with some students and had raised concerns from professors through his violent writing. Leave your remembrances of the Virginia Tech shooting in the comments below. Train’s Pat Monahan Salutes Miranda Lambert On #MusicMonday

San Francisco band’s frontman has ‘The House That Built Me’ on heavy rotation. By Kyle Anderson, with reporting by Matt Elias Train Photo: MTV News Before the release of their latest album Save Me, San Francisco , Train went on a three-year hiatus. While many groups have trouble getting back on the horse after spending time apart, the San Francisco-based band hasn’t missed a beat, and their current single, “Hey, Soul Sister,” sits at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. It’s the most successful song of their long career (which has also included the smash hits “Meet Virginia” and “Drops of Jupiter”), and it earned them a #MusicMonday shout-out a few weeks ago from Orianthi . Train have always had a healthy country influence in their sound, but Save Me, San Francisco has a tremendous amount of twang and heartbreak. That’s probably why frontman Pat Monahan has been spinning one of country music’s biggest divas at the moment. “The song I’m into right now is Miranda Lambert’s ‘The House That Built Me,’ ” Monahan told MTV News on the set of Train’s new video, which is being directed by former Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz . “I just think it’s a really amazing song and a super-great record. If she wants to do a ‘Crossroads’ with us, call me up!” “The House That Built Me” comes from Lambert’s latest album Revolution and is not only steadily climbing up the Billboard Country chart but also up the Hot 100. The track was written by Tom Douglas and Allen Shamblin, who between them have written hits for Lady Antebellum, Martina McBride and Bonnie Raitt. Perhaps Monahan is trying to expand his horizons through collaboration, as he is already working with INXS on an album that will re-imagine that band’s classic hits with new singers, a roster that also includes Rob Thomas and the Killers’ Brandon Flowers.
