25 dead in W.Va. mine blast, worst since 1984

ONTCOAL, W.Va. (AP) – Four coal miners were missing after an explosion that killed 25 and poison gases blocked rescuers Tuesday from resuming their search in the worst U.S. mining disaster in more than two decades. Rescuers began drilling three deep holes to vent methane and carbon monoxide from the mine so that search teams can go back in. But it will take until evening to get the first hole done and see if the mine air will allow re-entry , Gov. Joe Manchin said. The blast rocked Massey Energy Co.'s sprawling Upper Big Branch mine, about 30 miles south of Charleston, Monday afternoon. Manchin said at an early morning news briefing that while drilling on at least one of the three holes was slated to begin soon, it would take perhaps 12 hours before the drilling was complete and rescue teams could be sure of their safety in the mine, meaning the search wasn't expected to resume before 6 p.m. “It's going to be a long day and we're not going to have a lot of information until we can get the first hole through,” Manchin said. The drills need to bore through about 1,100 feet of earth and rock, he said. “All we have left is hope, and we're going to continue to do what we can,” Kevin Stricklin, an administrator for the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration, said at a news conference. “But I'm just trying to be honest with everybody and say that the situation does look dire.” Though the cause of the blast was not known, the operation run by Massey subsidiary Performance Coal Co. has a history of violations for not properly ventilating highly combustible methane gas, safety officials said. Stricklin said officials had hoped some of the missing survived the blast and were able to reach airtight chambers stocked with food, water and enough oxygen for them to live for four days. However, rescue teams checked one of two nearby and it was empty. The buildup of toxic methane gas _ a constant problem at the mine _ and of carbon monoxide prevented teams from reaching other chambers, officials said. A total of 31 miners were in the area during a shift change when the blast happened, officials said. Some may have died in the blast and others when they breathed in the gas-filled air, Stricklin said. Eleven bodies had been recovered and identified, but the other 14 have not, said Manchin, who returned to the state after being out of town. Names weren't released publicly, but Manchin said three of the dead are all members of the same family. “Everybody's just heartbroken over this and the impact on these families,” said mine safety director Joe Main, who was headed to West Virginia. It is the most people killed in a U.S. mine since 1984, when 27 died in a fire at Emery Mining Corp.'s mine in Orangeville, Utah. If the four missing bring the total to 29, it would be the most killed in a U.S. mine since a 1970 explosion killed 38 at Finley Coal Co., in Hyden, Ky. After a record low 34 deaths last year, Main said he and others believed coal mining had turned the corner on preventing fatal accidents. “There's always danger. There's so many ways you can get hurt, or your life taken,” said Gary Williams, a miner and pastor of a church near the southern West Virginia mine. “It's not something you dread every day, but there's always that danger. But for this area, it's the only way you're going to make a living.” Benny R. Willingham, 62, who was five weeks away from retiring, was among those who perished, said his sister-in-law Sheila Prillaman. He had mined for 30 years, the last 17 with Massey, and planned to take his wife on a cruise to the Virgin Islands next month, she said. “Benny was the type _ he probably wouldn't have stayed retired long,” Prillaman said. “He wasn't much of a homebody.” Prillaman said family members were angry because they learned of Willingham's death after reading it on a list Massey posted, instead of being contacted by the company. “The families want closure,” Manchin said at a news conference. “They want names … these families are good people. Hard-working people. They understand the challenges. Right now I told them to do what they do best. Love each other and come together as a family.” Manchin said the explosion was massive and that the situation looks bleak, but that miracles can happen and pointed to the 2006 Sago Mine explosion that killed 12. added by: jandreola

Asher Roth Makes His NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Pick

While the MC says ‘America’s team is Butler,’ he ends up siding with the charmed Michigan State Spartans. By Steven Roberts Asher Roth Photo: MTV News It’s safe to say that no one aced their bracket in this year’s upset-heavy NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. A few weeks back, Asher Roth invited a few celebs pals , including Taylor Swift and Devin the Dude, and hundreds of other bracketologists to compete in his Asher Roth’s 2010 NCAA Tournament Pick ‘Em League . Everyone thought they had the inside track on who would be cutting down the net in Indianapolis. Fast-forward a couple of weeks and a dozen upsets later, and we find Duke, Michigan State, West Virginia and Butler in the Final Four. MTV News recently caught up with a humbled Asher, who partnered with the sports-clothing company No Mas for the league, to see who he thought would win the big dance. “You know what? America’s team is Butler,” Roth said. “I hate Duke. I’m sorry. Go ahead and hate me, but I hate Duke. I can’t get down. To me, that’s just the easy way out. Michigan State just seems to have the charm with them, so you know what? I’m going to go ahead and say — well, West Virginia too, man.” Asher eventually decided on the Michigan State Spartans. He said the team out of East Lansing would surprise hoops fans and continue to play solid basketball, despite losing point guard Kalin Lucas to an injury. Roth did admit that he might not be the right guy to ask, however. “My bracket’s a mess, so you don’t even want to ask me about that,” he said. “I went wrong. I thought Kentucky was going to hold us down, all of the freshmen. I thought all of the freshmen were going to do it, even though DeMarcus Cousins is not a freshman. There’s no way that kid is a freshman.” Which team is your pick to win the national championship? Was your bracket as big a mess as Asher’s? Let us know in the comments below! Neal McDonough:No to Love Scenes

The Desperate Housewives actor, Neal McDonough, was replaced by David James Ellicot after having several days of shoot for the show Scoundrels. It happened when Nela McDonough refused a love scene with his co-star Virginia Madsen. The reason why he refused the scene is that he is a family man and a Catholic. It is clear to ABC that he won’t do love scenes. There are also shows that he didn’t get involved like in Desperate Housewives with Nicolette Sheridan and also in NBC’s boomtown or that network’s Medical Investigation. Sticking to his principles cost him jobs. Maybe, for him it’s not a problem to lose a job just to do what you believe in. Champagne In Corn Cups: Thank You From Vanguard

Correspondent Mariana Van Zeller and producers Darren Foster and Cerissa Tanner were honored today with a Peabody Award—electronic journalism's most distinguished prize—for their work on the Vanguard documentary “The OxyContin Express.” This morning we learned that “The OxyContin Express” will be the recipient of a Peabody Award. It’s one of the highest acheivements in our field and we’re deeply honored for being recognized and in such esteemed company. But we don’t want to let this moment pass without acknowledging the tremendous debt we owe to the people who helped us make the film. Journalism is a strange business. We sometimes ask people to share deeply personal parts of their lives in exchange for a very idealistic notion: that somehow their personal story will help to serve a greater good. Maureen and her son Tod took that brave leap of faith. And their cooperation and incredible honesty provided the emotional heart of this piece. In addition, there are many people who shared their valuable time and expertise to help us understand prescription drug abuse and what was going on in Florida and Kentucky. Several of them appeared in the documentary, many did not, but their contribution was no less valuable. In Florida, we’d like to thank Sgt. Lisa McElhaney, Sgt. Richard Pisanti and the Broward County Sheriff’s Department; Representative Kelly Skidmore; Dr. Sanford Silverman and the Task Force for Prescription Drug Abuse; Joel Kaufman and the United Way of Broward County; Pastor John Ramseur and Calvary House. In Kentucky, Greenup County Sheriff Keith Cooper was all southern charm and hospitallity. He opened the doors to everything, including the prison where Dawna, Jessica, Holly, Tiffany, Tim and Terry graciously shared their stories. Thanks also to Lt. Govenor Dan Mangiardo, Dr. John Morgan and Valerie Campbell at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead. And next door in West By God Virginia, Dr. Carl Rolly Sullivan at the home of the Mountaineers provided incredible insight into addiction and recovery. This story would have never make it off the ground without the support and care of the people who are living it everyday. We owe this incredible honor to them. And hope that in some way the piece made a difference. Thank you! —Mariana, Darren and Cerissa Watch “The OxyContin Express” here
