‘Talk Nerdy to Me’ returns with an all-new episode about Bane’s hard-to-decipher voice, ‘Star Trek 2’ and the MTV Movie Brawl 2012 tournament. By Josh Wigler Benedict Cumberbatch Photo: Getty Images Welcome to 2012, fellow nerds! With return trips to Middle-earth and Gotham City in the cards, not to mention sightings of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and Ridley Scott ‘s return to sci-fi on the horizon, the coming months are sure to usher in one of the most geek-friendly years of all time. It’s only appropriate then that “Talk Nerdy to Me” (the MTV News one-stop shop for all things comic books, movies and television) rises to the size and stature of the new year. That means more Hulk hands, light-sabers and action figures, more punch-out sound effects and — most importantly — more heated nerdy debate to come all throughout 2012 … and it all starts now! Watch the embedded video for the latest episode of “Talk Nerdy to Me,” and read on for a synopsis of what we discussed this week on the show! The Bane Problem “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” has been kicking ass and taking names at the box office for weeks now, thanks in no small part to the “Dark Knight Rises” prologue attached to IMAX prints of the Tom Cruise action vehicle. Fans are raving about the first look at Christopher Nolan’s last Batman movie, except for one teensy, tiny problem: Bane’s voice . The Caped Crusader’s newest nemesis’ mask-muffled muttering has left some viewers scratching their heads, and Nolan’s apparent insistence on not improving the clarity of Bane’s dialogue has only led to further bewilderment. But should fans really be so worried about the so-called “Bane problem,” or is it all much ado about nothing? Find out what Team Nerdy thinks in this week’s episode. “Sherlock” Goes to Space Between playing Britain’s greatest detective and Middle-earth’s most fearsome dragon, how many more iconic roles does Benedict Cumberbatch need to plop on his plate? Why not give him one more: The “Sherlock” and “War Horse” actor is beaming aboard J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek 2” as the film’s lead villain, ending a long search that’s seen actors Benicio del Toro and Edgar Ramirez circling the role. But the question remains: Who is Cumberbatch playing? “Nerdy’s” Brian Phares expects a new character, while the rest of the team feels like screaming “KHAAAAAAAN!” Who do you think Cumberbatch is playing? The Brawl for It All Finally, nothing like a shameless plug to start the new year right! Team Nerdy took some time to talk about MTV Movie Brawl 2012 , our current tournament to decide which movie you guys are most excited to see in the coming year. Some flicks like “Hunger Games” and “Breaking Dawn” are dominating as expected, but others — namely “The Dark Knight Rises,” “Skyfall” and “The Amazing Spider-Man” — are underperforming, so much so that some so-called “shoo-ins” might not even make it into the March Madness-style bracket kicking off on Monday. We already put the question to “Avengers” and “Spider-Man” fans , but it bears repeating to the Batman and Bond crowd: Where are you guys? Time’s running out! This was, oh, five years in coming , but the long-time Village Voice film critic J. Hoberman has been let go from the paper. Fun fact: Hoberman’s 34-year relationship with the Voice commenced with a high-low glimpse at David Lynch’s experimental blast Eraserhead (” Eraserhead ‘s not a movie I’d drop acid for, although I would consider it a revolutionary act if someone dropped a reel of it into the middle of Star Wars “) and concluded this week with a high-low glimpse at Ken Jacobs’s experimental blast Seeking the Monkey King (“This homemade slingshot has the capacity to resist and pulverize the idiotic visual aggression of a commercial behemoth like Transformers . It’s a ’60s vision happening today—beautiful, terrifying, and determined to storm the doors of perception”). Anyway, don’t sweat it, he’ll be back. [ Capital New York ]

By Gil Kaufman Voters register their votes in the Iowa Caucus Photo: Justin Sullivan/ Getty Images It all comes down to this. Tonight Iowans will cast their votes for the Republican candidate of choice. Who will the barrage of ads, baby kissing and stumping pay off for? Will it be the business-like Mitt Romney, the surging Ron Paul, the dark horse Rick Santorum, the veteran politico Newt Gingrich or trailing Michele Bachmann? MTV News is on the ground in Iowa and will be covering the caucus and live-blogging all the details. Keep refreshing for up-to-the-minute political drama here! 7:16 A sophomore at Drake speaking on behalf of Rep. Paul makes it clear he’s speaking for himself, not the ROTC, of which he is a member. He has to raise his voice a bit to be heard over a crying baby in his arms. “If you want someone who can beat Obama you need someone who is the opposite of Obama.” 7:15 Nobody stands up for John Huntsman, the former Obama administration ambassador to China who basically threw in the towel on Iowa to concentrate on next week’s contest in New Hampshire. 7:13 There are more than 200 people in the room, which has a parquet floor and almost as much space devoted to the media as voters. 7:11 “He created 11 million jobs during his time in Congress,” the Gingrich speaker says. 7:08 The speaker calls for a representative to speak on behalf of Rep. Bachmann… Nothing. So it’s on to the person speaking on behalf of Newt Gingrich. He apologizes for his lack of eye contact, but he’s reading a letter from former Speaker Gingrich. 7:04 We just said the Pledge of Allegiance and now an organizer is sending around the “Money Bags” to help fill the precinct’s coffers. 6:55 Caucus goers are rushing into an auditorium in Olmstead Hall. Looks like Kobe Bryant will never be lonely. Not if bangers like this one keep throwing themselves at him. Kobe Bryant’s impending divorce may come as good news to Sanaa Lathan. A source who attended Jay-Z and Kanye West ’s Watch the Throne concert at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Tuesday tells us that the luscious-lipped “Love & Basketball” actress was flirting seductively with the Lakers guard during the show. “She touched his face, and she was shaking her a– in front of him to the music,” says the insider. Bryant’s spokesman, Michael Sitrick, says Bryant and Lathan were “both at the concert,” but he adds: “There was no flirting. There’s nothing there.” According to our source, Lathan, 40, who’s the voice of Donna Tubbs on “The Cleveland Show,” came to the concert with a girlfriend, and Bryant, 33, who was with teammate Matt Barnes and a bodyguard, were initially seated on adjacent couches in the club-like friends-and-family VIP area behind center stage. Kim Kardashian , Beyoncé and Jake Gyllenhaal were among the other celebs in attendance. Eventually, Lathan and Bryant ended up standing next to each other, and that’s when our source said the actress, who was drinking champagne, became progressively more flirtatious with the NBA star, who stuck to soft drinks, presumably because he’s in training. Lathan, attired in a sexy white-chiffon dress over what appeared to be a black bra, was “whispering in his ear” and at one point stroked the ballplayer’s face. “It seemed like a pretty intimate gesture,” says the source. At one point she left her seat and when she came back, she made sure she was standing next to Kobe again,” says the source She also danced to Jay-Z and West’s performance in front of Bryant. “She was throwing her head everywhere. Her hair was like slapping him in the face,” laughs the source, who adds that at one point, one of the straps of Lathan’s dressed slipped enticingly off her shoulder. When West performed “All of the Lights,” Bryant and Lathan danced together. Sitrick denies this however, saying, “There was no touching of the face, and he did not dance with her.” Despite Lathan’s attentions, the source noted that Bryant seemed “moody” and “down,” and the two seemed to go their separate ways. Bryant’s glum disposition may have had to do with his wife, Vanessa Bryant ’s, decision to initiate divorce proceedings after 10½ years of marriage. The case was filed in Orange County Superior Court on Friday. We’re pretty sure Kobe stopped checking for Sanaa’s “type” over a decade ago. He’s been stepping out on ‘Nessa with Becky’s but we haven’t heard a word about any sisters, so we’re pretty sure even if she was rubbing on him it was all in good fun. ‘When you see that someone can make it on their own … you let that talent be,’ label boss says of J. Cole. By Rob Markman Jay-Z Photo: MTV News Jay-Z isn’t a dad quite yet, but maybe his many years as a label head has prepped him for fatherhood. “I think running a label is a bit like having kids,” Hov told MTV News while in New York to promote two charitable Carnegie Hall concerts in February. The Roc Nation CEO’s answer came in response to criticism that he could have done more to endorse J. Cole , who dropped his debut, Cole Word: The Sideline Story, in September. “When you know someone needs more help, you help them,” Jigga said. “When you see that someone can make it on their own … you see Kanye or J. Cole, you see that sort of talent — you let that talent be. You let that talent find its way.” It’s no secret that a co-sign from the God MC can help anyone’s career, but in the case of J. Cole, Hov didn’t believe his Roc Nation signee needed any more than what he was given. And apparently, Jay was right. With Sideline Story, Cole debuted at #1 on the Billboard albums chart, selling more than 217,000 copies in its first week of release. To Hova’s credit, he did appear on “Mr. Nice Watch,” a braggadocios album cut off of Cole’s debut, but the guest appearance came in the ninth inning. By August, Jay had not yet contributed to the album. During a press listening session that month it was clear that Cole was not expecting the feature. “Nobody owes me anything,” he said. “Jay-Z doesn’t owe me a verse because I signed to him.” Still, Jay was watching his prot
‘Once again, the unstoppable Echelon,’ frontman Jared Leto marvels of band’s dedicated fanbase. By James Montgomery Jared Leto performs “Hurricane” on “Unplugged: Photo: MTV On Tuesday afternoon (December 13), 30 Seconds to Mars took home the inaugural Best Live MTV Performance award for their stirring, scintillating “Unplugged” version of “Hurricane.” Thanks to the votes of their fans, 30STM withstood a late charge from Paramore’s “Brick by Boring Brick” to win the honor. Now, with their trophy firmly in hand, they’re reacting to their triumph — and, as always, sharing their glory with their fervent Echelon fanbase. “This is so incredible. We had an amazing time doing [‘Unplugged’], and thank you to everybody who voted,” frontman Jared Leto said. “Once again, the unstoppable Echelon. We love you guys. “If it wasn’t for the Echelon, we wouldn’t have ever won a single award,” he continued. “I think that’s the blessing of living in this digital age, is that people have a voice, and the Echelon Nation out there has made their voice heard again and again, and we’re so proud that they’re able to gather together, to organize themselves, to fight for a common cause and to make dreams a reality. It’s pretty special.” In a week when there was no shortage of highlights for the band — they were awarded their hard-earned gold record plaques for the This Is War album and entered the “Guinness Book of World Records” with a sold-out, celebratory show in New York — Leto counts their Best Live Performance win as one of the biggest moments. It was almost enough to bring a tear to his steely-blue eyes. “We’re very surprised. … It’s been an insane week already. We got a gold record, we did a Guinness World Record-breaking show,” he laughed. “There’s gonna be a few tears rolling down these hardened, leathery, road-dog cheeks.” All this week, watch “AMTV” on MTV every day at 8 a.m. ET for our Best of 2011 lists.
