Romney’s deluge of negative campaign ads seemed to have their desired effect. By Gil Kaufman Mitt Romney Photo: Joe Raedle/ Getty Images TAMPA, Florida — Mitt Romney climbed back into the driver’s seat Tuesday (January 31) with a big win in the Florida primary . Shortly after polls closed, CNN projected that Romney would win the state with 47 percent of the vote to Gingrich’s 31 percent. Thanks to his two solid debate appearances and his huge money advantage over Newt Gingrich, Romney seemed relaxed and confident in the 24 hours before the results came in when MTV News spent time trailing the campaign all over the state. With more than 4 million GOP voters eligible to vote in the primary, early reports indicated that between 1.5 million and 2 million could cast votes. The win is an important one for Romney for several reasons. It erases the memory of his five-point loss to Senator John McCain in the 2008 Florida primary , and it also means that this time he scoops up all 50 delegates in the winner-takes-all state. He was helped along by the massive infusion of cash for (mostly) negative ads attacking Gingrich funded by his own campaign and the Restore Our Future SuperPac, which outspent Gingrich and his allied Pac, Winning Our Future, by a 4-to-1 margin. Together, the men spent more than $20 million on the bruising battle in the important swing state with the highest foreclosure rate and one of the highest unemployment rates in the nation. In a stark contrast to the three previous contests, according to CNN exit polls in Florida, Romney finally broke through to young voters (18-29), a group he had previously not clicked with. While Romney had reliably scored with older voters, in Florida, he won 39 percent of the youth votes to 26 percent for Congressman Ron Paul, 23 percent for Gingrich and 12 percent for Rick Santorum. In part, Paul lost his usual pull with young voters in the Sunshine State because Tuesday’s contest was a “closed” primary, which meant that only registered Republicans, and not independents, could cast ballots. The Libertarian-leaning Paul did not spend much time campaigning in Florida, preferring to focus on the upcoming Nevada primary on Saturday. He came in a distant fourth place with just 7 percent of the vote, bested by former Pennsylvania Senator Santorum (13 percent), who was forced to quit campaigning over the weekend to attend to a sick child. There were also not early results on if the state’s controversial new voter-registration laws had any impact on the turnout. Should they stay in place through the general election in November — there are currently several lawsuits attempting to overturn the laws — some voting-rights advocate worry they could have a suppressive effect on a number of traditionally Democrat-leaning voting blocs, including young and minority voters. The next contest takes place Saturday in Nevada. MTV is on the scene in Florida! MTV News takes a closer look at legislation passed last year in the state that has voter-registration groups up in arms. By Gil Kaufman Mitt Romney campaigns in Dunedin, Florida on Monday Photo: Emmanuel Dunand/ AFP/ Getty Images TAMPA, Florida — It’s a teenage rite of passage up there with learning to drive and attending prom: your first time voting . But according to some longtime voter-registration organizations, that right could be threatened this year in a number of states due to new laws that make signing up new voters more difficult. The issue has come into sharp relief this week in Florida, which holds its presidential primary Tuesday. A bill passed last year in the state includes a number of new rules for how civic organizations can register new voters, as well as ones that reduce the number of early voting days from 14 to eight and prohibit early voting on the Sunday before an election . The part of the new law that has troubled groups such as Rock the Vote and the League of Women Voters the most, though, is the one that forces such third-party organizations to submit voter-registration applications within 48 hours of receiving them, instead of the 10 days as provided by the pervious law. These groups — which are among several who have suspended their voter-registration drives in Florida this year because of a lawsuit over the changes — say the fines and threats of potential civil lawsuits have put a chill on their get-out-the-vote efforts. “We are outraged at these new laws that will prevent opportunities for youth civic participation,” Heather Smith, president of Rock the Vote, said in a statement announcing the lawsuit in early December. Attorneys for the groups claim Florida’s new voter laws violate the U.S. Constitution and federal laws by violating their constitutionally protected rights of speech and association and failing to give individuals and groups fair notice of how to comply with the laws’ “confusing and unclear mandates.” They also argue that the laws breach the 1993 National Voter Registration Act, a federal law designed in part to “encourage community-based voter-registration activity.” Supporters of the law say it will save money by eliminating extra voting days and is a bulwark against voter fraud, which its supporters argue is a constant threat to the democratic process. Some Democrats, however, have accused Republicans — Florida is among the half-dozen states with GOP-led legislatures that passed new voting laws last year — of using the provisions to disenfranchise some traditionally key Democratic voting blocs, including racial minorities, the poor, the young and elderly voters. There were 31 cases of voter fraud referred to Florida authorities between January 2008 and 2011, and only two resulted in arrests out of the 8.1 million votes cast in the 2008 election. A hearing was held in Tampa, Florida, on Friday, led by U.S. Senators Bill Nelson of Florida and Dick Durbin of Illinois, in which the men described the bill as a “voter suppression act” and vowed to have the courts address what Durbin sees as a violation of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Ron Paul and Jon Huntsman finish in second and third, respectively, with Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich pulling up the rear. By Gil Kaufman Mitt Romney Photo: Getty Images MANCHESTER, New Hampshire — What a difference a week makes. Many voters, journalists and campaign workers were up into the wee hours of the morning seven days ago when the Iowa caucus went down to the wire. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney won that contest by just eight votes, but in New Hampshire on Tuesday (January 10), the margin was much wider, as the longtime GOP front-runner became the first non-incumbent Republican to ever sweep the first two primaries of the election season with 36 percent of the vote when polls closed. Thanks to a population that includes 40 percent of voters who identify as independents, it was another strong finish for Libertarian Congressman Ron Paul . With his by-now-ubiquitous cadre of young supporters spreading the word alongside unique ads on everything from digital billboards to green laser beams spelling out his name on the side of downtown Manchester buildings, Paul built on his third-place finish in Iowa , coming in second. After barely registering in Iowa, former Utah governor and Obama administration ambassador to China Jon Huntsman put all his chips on the Granite State over the past few months. The motorcycle-riding, piano-pounding ex-high school rocker appeared at more than 170 events in New Hampshire while his rivals focused on Iowa. And while his poll numbers slowly crept up from single digits as Election Day neared, when polls closed Tuesday, Huntsman finished in third place. Rick Santorum might have come in a close second in the Iowa caucus, but in New Hampshire, he shared last place with Newt Gingrich, nabbing around 10 percent of the vote each. Up next is January 17’s South Carolina primary, where Romney faces a much harder contest with Santorum and Gingrich. MTV is on the scene in New Hampshire! On ‘RapFix Live,’ MGK presents his die-hard supporters with a hand-carved award for all their votes. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Machine Gun Kelly Photo: MTV News Machine Gun Kelly is having a Rocky Balboa moment. After he was named MTV News’ Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2011 on Wednesday’s “RapFix Live,” the Cleveland rapper hopped on Skype to check in with Sway and thank his fans for all their support. He even presented them with an award of their own. “I can’t explain how grateful I am for all those kids who sat there and got in voting circles and sat there for hours and hours and did votes upon votes,” MGK said of his fans, who voted for him in the week-long poll that started December 7. “I know that we have probably the least amount of fans, but like I told my fans: Heart is always gonna prevail over connections and who these people know and who tweets what.” It was then that MGK held up a red piece of wood with the words: “Congratulations to the Breakthrough Fans of 2011, EST” carved into it. “I stayed up last night,” the Bad Boy rapper said. “I couldn’t go get a plaque made, so I went and got a piece of wood and carved in it, and so we want to present this to the fans.” The competition was tough, and ever since the fan-driven Hottest Breakthrough poll opened on the RapFix blog last week, Kells was jockeying for the #1 position, fighting off Lil Twist and Mac Miller. A$AP Rocky, Future, French Montana, Freddie Gibbs, Kendrick Lamar, Meek Mill and Roscoe Dash were also in contention, but in the end, it was MGK who held the crown after hundreds of thousands of votes were tallied. When all the math was complete, MGK finished with 44 percent of the vote. Miller, whose Blue Slide Park debuted at #1 last month, was an early favorite. Twist, who finished in the #2 spot with 39 percent of the vote, proved to be MGK’s most formidable competition, thanks to his die-hard fans, Young Money team and best friend Justin Bieber, who all tweeted in support. Next up, Kells would like to release his debut album, which he revealed he has already finished recording. But before he signed off, he couldn’t help but thank his fans once again. “To the fans, this is a huge thing for the world,” Machine Gun Kelly said, feeling inspired by the movie “Rocky,” which he said he had been watching earlier in the day. “We just knocked out Apollo Creed, and I just want to thank all my fans for being ringside with me.” All this week, watch “AMTV” on MTV every day at 8 a.m. ET for our Best of 2011 lists.
