Lil Wayne And Eminem: Relive The MCs’ Past ‘SNL’ Glory

Before the duo hit the ‘Saturday Night Live’ stage, we look back on the rappers’ previous guest turns. By Paul Cantor Eminem and Lil Wayne Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Lil Wayne and Eminem are set to appear as musical guests on “Saturday Night Live” this weekend. Em and Wayne collaborated earlier this year on singles — Em on Wayne’s “Drop the World” and Wayne on Em’s “No Love” — and there’s a possibility they’ll perform both songs on the show. But this is far from either artist’s first tour of duty at Studio 8H. Here, we take a quick look back at the rappers’ past ‘SNL’ glory. September 2008 : Lil Wayne appeared one time, back in ’08, in an episode hosted by Olympian Michael Phelps. At the time, his album Tha Carter III was one of the year’s biggest sellers. Backed by the ‘SNL’ band and his Cash Money cohort (and current Young Money president) Mack Maine, Wayne performed “Got Money.” Decked out in a black leather biker jacket and violet-colored skinny jeans, Weezy ran through the song before introducing Mack, who closed the set. Wayne returned for “Lollipop,” dressed in a white V-neck T-shirt and grey jeans. He sang with a green-and-white electric guitar strapped to his torso and noodled his way through a few (out-of-key) chords toward the song’s close. October 2004 : Em’s history with ‘SNL’ stretches back to 1999, and he would continue to pop up on the sketch show over the years. In 2004, he appeared on an episode hosted by Kate Winslet. Wearing an oversize Detroit Tigers jersey, and flanked by D12 member Proof , Eminem performed the hilarious, bouncy “Just Lose It.” In a more serious moment, he also rapped “Mosh.” Dressed in all black, he passionately spit his George Bush-protest song, imploring viewers not to re-elect the U.S. president come Election Day, which was just weeks away. Then in May 2002 , Em guest-starred on an episode hosted by Kirsten Dunst, doing only one song this time, “Without Me.” The now-deceased Proof was Em’s hypeman on this stop too. Em also showed off his acting chops — his “8 Mile” was only a few months from its November release — taking part in an ‘SNL’ sketch , in which he played himself. October 2000 : In an episode hosted by Rob Lowe, Em made his first solo ‘SNL’ appearance. The Detroit MC was riding high off the success of The Marshall Mathers LP that year, and he performed two of the album’s biggest hits, “The Real Slim Shady” and “Stan.” For “Stan,” he brought along Dido, who sang the song’s hook as Em waved his hands side to side. October 1999 : Eminem turned up on ‘SNL’ for the very first time alongside his mentor Dr. Dre back in the fall of 1999, in an episode hosted by Norm Macdonald. Dre brought Marshall along for a performance of “Forgot About Dre.” In baggy jeans, backward cap and puffy, goose-down jacket, Em spit his multisyllabic flow and bounced along to the catchy Dre beat. Lil Wayne Gives Fan’s Mother A Wheelchair

‘I really thank him to be so great and give me a chair,’ says Evelyn Austin, who received the present from Wayne after her daughter, Ronda, wrote him encouraging letters in jail. By Mawuse Ziegbe Lil Wayne Photo: Alexander Tamargo/ Getty Images Lil Wayne is making new fans, but this time, it’s not for his Carter hits, it’s for his compassion. When Wayne was riding out his eight-month prison bid this year, he received tons of kind messages from fans. However, the missives — and the plight — of one Weezy acolyte in particular, Ronda Austin, touched him so much that he lavished her family with a much-needed gift: a wheelchair for her mother. In a short film posted on the MC’s WeezyThanxYou blog , Austin describes how her words of encouragement led to the generous present. “One day I was driving down the expressway and my phone rang … Something said just pick up it up. I’m like, ‘Hello?’ and he’s like, ‘Hi, may I please speak to Ronda Austin,’ I said ‘Speaking. May I ask who’s calling?’ and he like, ‘Yes, this is Lil Wayne.’ I said ‘Oh, ok. Who?’ “she laughs. It may have taken Ronda a minute to realize who was on the line, but Wayne certainly knew who she was. She also describes how exactly how her relationship with her famous pen pal blossomed. “The first time I wrote Lil Wayne I just let him know that I support him, and I’m gonna keep writing him until he comes out. Just giving him a lot of encouragement [and] let him know that God is with him and tell him to keep his head up and stay encouraged. I would send him bible verses all the time, just a lot of words of encouragement. I talked a lot about my family, about myself, especially about my mom and my dad, which I love very much ’cause I always talk about my parents. I guess one of my letters must have touched him and he just gave me a call,” she explains. “In the midst of our conversation he said, ‘Did you and your dad get your mom a wheelchair yet?’ and I said, ‘No, we’re still working on getting her a chair. He said … ‘Alright, don’t worry about it.’ I said, ‘What do you mean?’ He said, ‘No, no, no, don’t worry about … I’m gonna take care of it.’ ” Wayne stuck by his word, and later the film shows representatives from Core Care Technologies, arriving at the Austins’ front door in New Jersey with her spiffy new ride, The Quantum 6000. Evelyn, who had been confined to her home for nearly two years due to weak knees and a sub-par wheelchair, happily tests out the new gift in the streets, as her family looks on. “I don’t know much about Lil Wayne but I’ll tell you that what he’s done, I think it’s a gift,” Ron Manno of Core Care Technologies says. “It’s very rare that you can find an opportunity to do what he’s done.” Evelyn didn’t know who Wayne was before the gesture either, but maintains she wouldn’t forget Weezy’s good deed. “I felt good, I felt really great. I didn’t know Wayne before now, but I do know him now and I thank him. I really thank him to be so great and give me a chair. He didn’t even know me and he got me a chair. I pray and ask God to bless him,” she says. “My mom hasn’t been out the house in the street in years. I just see such a difference in her. She has like, this get-up-and-go about her now. She can get in her chair, she’s more mobile and that means so much to us ’cause me and my dad, we’re doing a lot of things around the house and making my mom comfortable,” Ronda says, getting emotional. “But when she’s up and about, it’s just a good thing to see.” Wayne introduced the post with a short note that also ended with a heartfelt sentiment. “God Bless Austin Family,” Weezy wrote. Lil Wayne Calls Upcoming Single ‘6’7" ‘ A ‘Very Tall Record’

‘Hopefully, it shows people where I’m at lyrically,’ Weezy tells Shade 45. By Jayson Rodriguez Lil Wayne Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Last week, Lil Wayne’s right-hand Mack Maine told MTV News that the New Orleans MC’s first expected single from Tha Carter IV, “6’7,”” would be like “A Milli” but “on steroids.” Weezy, however, corrected him on Tuesday (December 14) when he appeared on satellite radio station Shade 45’s morning show with DJ Drama and blogger Karen Civil , in his first extensive interview since his release from prison last month. ( Wayne spoke to MTV News on the red carpet of his welcome home festivities in Miami.) “It’s a monster, actually,” he told Drama. “Hopefully, it shows people where I’m at lyrically. Better than everybody.” But is “6’7″ ” a high-powered “A Milli” on steroids? “Nah,” Wayne said. “Human growth hormones. It’s a very tall record.” The track is reportedly produced by Bangladesh, who helmed the frenetic “A Mili” as well, and will feature Young Money/ Nick Cannon signee Cory Gunz. According to Wayne, he’s also preparing to shoot a video for the clip with iconic hip-hop music director Hype Williams. So far, since his release, the only new Wayne material has been his contribution to Bryan “Baby” Williams’ “Fire Flames” track. But Wayne warned that since his imprisonment, his skills have only increased. “I would say so,” he told Drama, when the DJ asked if he’d improved lyrically compared to before his time in Rikers Island. “I would say, yeah, because it don’t matter where I went, I try to be better than my last [project].” Related Photos The Evolution Of Weezy Related Artists Lil Wayne

Ja Rule To Serve Two Years In Prison On Gun Charges

Rapper reaches plea deal for charges from arrest in July 2007. By Jayson Rodriguez Ja Rule (file) Photo: Mark Mainz/Getty Images NEW YORK — Ja Rule reached a plea deal with prosecutors in a Manhattan courtroom on Monday (December 13) that will see the rapper serve two years in prison. The charges stem from a gun bust in July 2007, when both Ja and Lil Wayne were arrested separately following a concert performance. The Murder Inc. star pleaded guilty to attempted criminal possession of a weapon, a class D felony in the second degree. “Minor setback for a major comeback,” Ja tweeted after reaching the deal. Ja Rule is expected to be sentenced in February, following a court appearance that same month to report his progress to the judge. The case originated just over three years ago, when Ja Rule joined Lil Wayne at Manhattan’s Beacon Theatre to perform with the Cash Money superstar, who was headlining his first New York City bill. After the concert, both rappers, in separate instances, were pulled over in their vehicles by the New York Police Department. Both were subsequently charged with illegal possession of a firearm; Lil Wayne was also brought up on drug charges. In Ja Rule’s case, the rapper was one of three men in his car to be charged; all three were arraigned on the same charges. Police said they found a loaded semiautomatic weapon in the rear door of his car. If the Queens native had gone to trial and been found guilty, he could have faced up to seven years behind bars. Now, having reached a plea agreement, he’ll likely serve 16 months in prison, followed by a year and a half of post-prison supervision. Last year, Lil Wayne reached a plea deal in his case, and in March of this year, he turned himself in to begin his one-year sentence. Just last month, the New Orleans MC completed his sentence and is currently on probation for an unrelated incident in Arizona. Related Artists Ja Rule

Lil Wayne’s ‘Nino Brown, Pt. 3’ Will Be ‘So Much Greater’

Director DJ Scoob Doo tells MTV News third installment in DVD series is being expanded to capture Wayne’s life post-prison. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Rahman Dukes Lil Wayne Photo: Chris Graythen/Getty Images Lil Wayne has kept a low profile since emerging from prison last month, quietly recording again and showing up at a handful of sporting events. But the Cash Money superstar has been very productive: He’s “93 percent done” with his next project, Tha Carter IV, according to Lil Wayne insider DJ Scoob Doo . Scoob has been with Wayne every step of the way since his release — from New York to Las Vegas and Miami — capturing the moments for “The Nino Brown Story, Pt. 3,” the ongoing DVD series that documents life behind the scenes for the martian MC. The DVD was scheduled for release earlier this year, but Scoob decided to pull back and wait until Wayne was free. The project is expected to see the light of day once Wayne’s LP is finished. “I was planning to put that out while Wayne was away, that was the traditional outlook of it,” Scoob told MTV News. “But Wayne didn’t see the ‘I’m Single’ video. That’s like my partner in crime with this, so to [have] put it out without him seeing [the video], it proves everything — he knows that was a good product. But it’s kinda like putting an album out without him listening to it.” The rapper and his videographer recently sat down and watched all of the clips Scoob shot, which subsequently made their way onto the Net while Weezy served out his sentence. The batch included “I’m Single,” “We Be Steady Mobbin’ ” and the “Pop Dat” videos. The last one, “Pop Dat,” brought home the importance of the project for Wayne. The clip features footage of the Birdman going to visit him on Rikers Island, fans holding up “Free Weezy” signs and more. As a result, “The Nino Brown Story, Pt. 3” has swelled to a larger production, set to encompass material that follows Wayne in the period leading up to his imprisonment right through his post-prison return to the stage during a surprise performance with Drake . “It’s telling a story, and the story is so much greater now,” Scoob explained. “It’s kinda like you’re trying to make a TV show episode off of a major motion picture. You can’t do it, you can’t do it. You can do it, but it’s gonna have to be continued. So, right now, it’s like we on ‘Nino Brown, 17,’ if you will, just to put in perspective of how much video footage we have. How much content we have, how much on a different space we are professional-wise, working together-wise.” What do you want to see on the next “Nino Brown” DVD? Let us know in the comments! Lil Wayne Collaborators Partners-N-Crime Building Buzz Beyond Bayou

New Orleans duo talk to Mixtape Daily about linking up with Lil Wayne, YMCMB crew as they prep Legendary LP. By Jayson Rodriguez Partners In Crime Photo: NOLA Fire Starter: Partners-N-Crime OK, so these guys might not exactly be new jacks, but Partners-N-Crime are still on the come up. After building an extensive catalog and collaborations with the likes of Lil Wayne, the New Orleans duo are expanding their fanbase. Riding the wave of their new banger “Finally Could Breathe,” featuring Young Money president Mack Maine, Kango Slim and Mista Meana are currently hard at work on their 10th project, Legendary, set to drop next year. It’s an effort they once would have been hard pressed to put together, when their camps warring with each other years ago. “When we were coming up in the game, Wayne was a little bit younger than us,” Slim told Mixtape Daily. “We were on a label at the time called Big Boy and he was with Cash Money Records. And to be honest, both of the labels had a rivalry thing going on. Once Cash Money blew, Big Boy continued to do their thing. They housed Mystikal, Fiend, us, and a couple more artists. At one time, we never looked eye to eye, but as we grew older things began to change.” Wayne helped break the ice when he reached out to the underground vets a couple of years ago offering to record a track together. (The group was also, at one point, signed to former Cash Money member Juvenile’s label.) Partners-N-Crime sent Weezy something they were working on, a rockish number called “We Do What We Want To,” which eventually landed on their last set, We Are Legend. The superstar MC liked what he heard and contributed a verse. (“This was a little bit before he got into the same type of music with Rebirth, ” Meana recalled.) The result was a raucous anthem that helped to push PNC beyond their bayou borders. Before finishing up their Legendary collection, the group is next scheduled to perform at BAM’s 2010 Next Wave Festival in Brooklyn, New York, as part of the Red Hot + New Orleans lineup.
