Lil Wayne Promises ‘I’ll Return’ In Pre-Jail Tweet

We look back at the highlights from Weezy’s weeks on Twitter. By James Montgomery Lil wayne Photo: MTV News On February 21, amid the ongoing reshuffling of his sentencing , Lil Wayne started a Twitter account . In the time since, he’s used the site to communicate with his fans, explore big topics like love and faith (and bowling ) and even set off a minor panic when he threatened to quit tweeting . Thankfully, he didn’t give it up, because throughout his sentencing delays, Weezy’s tweets have given fans a chance to peer inside his head and to live the drama of his impending jail time with him. And now that he’s officially been sentenced , we figure those tweets will probably come to an end. So here’s a look back at some of the highlights, set against the timeline of lengthy legal maneuverings. In the days leading up to his sentencing, Wayne wrote almost exclusively about affairs of the heart (“Ain’t it funny how love finds you in your darkest place?” “Love, I am your shadow,” “Love is a circle … stay in it or around it … just don’t end up out of shape”) and, uh, time travel (“Hello future, goodbye now, I’m on my way to the past …”). He also took time to let his fans know that he was enduring in the face of a year behind bars (“Staying strong,” ” Yesterday, I smiled, today I smirked, tomorrow I stop … thanks for your thoughts and prayers, they’re needed.”). Then, when a courthouse fire caused his sentencing to be delayed yet again, he let it be known that he planned to use his remaining days of freedom to promote positivity. “More time to love,” he wrote, immediately following the delay. “Trying to spend my love wisely.” With his sentencing rescheduled for Monday (March 8), he again started touting love — or the absence of it — dropping lines like “Love is a beautiful lie which most prefer when the truth hurts” and “Born to love, so I’ll die without.” He also promised to “Kik Lil Twist’s azz in bowling” (because it can’t always be about love). And, finally, early Monday morning, with his sentencing just hours away, he posted what may be his final tweet (for now): an inspirational message that promised his fans he’d most certainly be back. “Law is mind without reason,” he wrote. “I’ll return.” Related Videos Lil Wayne’s ‘Road To Rikers’ Lil Wayne Goes To Jail Related Photos Lil Wayne Heads To Rikers Island Related Artists Lil Wayne

Lil Wayne Could Finish Jail Time In Eight Months

Rapper should only serve two-thirds of his yearlong sentence, a lawyer tells MTV News. By Gil Kaufman Lil Wayne at the Manhattan Criminal Courthouse on February 9 in New York City Photo: Dario Cantatore/ Getty Images After delays due to dental surgery and a courthouse fire , Lil Wayne will finally be sentenced and begin his one-year prison term stemming from a 2007 gun arrest on Monday (March 8). But, according to a prominent New York lawyer, barring any major disciplinary issues, the MC (born Dwayne Michael Carter) should be free in eight months. “In New York, any sentencing to a year or less requires the time to be done in a county facility, and based on good-time credit in that kind of facility [such as Rikers Island, where Wayne is expected to be imprisoned], people only usually do two-thirds of their time,” said Scott Leemon, a New York attorney who is not involved in the Wayne case but who has represented a number of other rappers in legal issues, including 50 Cent, Tony Yayo and Remy Ma. “Basically, all he needs to do is stay out of trouble, and it’s an automatic thing. But if you’re having disciplinary problems, they can take away good time.” Leemon said it takes a “substantial” violation for that good time to be revoked, such as getting into a major fight or having large amounts of contraband. Wayne’s lawyer did not return requests for comment at press time. Though Leemon did not know what kind of sentencing guidelines Judge Charles H Solomon would impose on Weezy, he said that if the rapper did good time and earned an early release, he could walk out of Rikers Island in early October without having to see a parole board. “The only question is if he will be sentenced to some post-release supervision, which depends on what the judge gives him.” Wayne was originally scheduled to be sentenced last month, but his attorney requested a delay due to dental surgery the rapper required. Judge Solomon agreed to the last-minute request and rescheduled the proceedings for March 2. The New Orleans MC has had more time than he requested to recover from a reported eight root canals in one day. “I don’t want this to get pushed back anymore,” Judge Solomon told the rapper’s lawyer during his last appearance. “This is the last adjournment.” Then, just hours before he was set to appear before Judge Charles H. Solomon on Tuesday, a fire broke out at the Manhattan Criminal Court Building. At the first sign of smoke, the building was evacuated and all appearances were postponed. The next day, Weezy’s court date was once again rescheduled. Wayne is set to appear before Solomon on Monday and plead guilty to attempted gun possession. He’s then expected to turn himself in immediately to begin his prison term. The rapper reached a deal with prosecutors in November to plead out to a lesser sentence, and in return he is expected to be released from prison as early as October of this year. In 2007, Lil Wayne was arrested for gun possession following his first headlining performance in Manhattan at the Beacon Theatre. A gun-possession charge in New York could have landed the Cash Money superstar behind bars for up to 15 years if he was convicted. Wayne has been working feverishly in recent weeks to complete a number of videos and songs to stay relevant during his physical absence. That pace he’s gotten accustomed to, however, will come to a screeching halt, according to a New York corrections officer who spoke to MTV News. Once the rapper lands behind bars, his days will be as regimented as his recording schedule — but will be maintained by the prison warden, not Lil Wayne. “He’ll be housed with inmates who are classified in his category, and he’ll be able to be a regular inmate,” the guard said. “He’ll be able to watch television, go into the day room and congregate with people of his classification. Lil Wayne Shouts Out Justin Bieber, Cory Gunz On Ustream

Weezy says Gunz is joining Young Money in one of several videos made before Monday’s sentencing. By Shaheem Reid Lil Wayne in his Ustream video Photo: ustream Lil Wayne should be touching down in New York City for his jail sentencing on Monday (March 8). In the morning, his videographer and photographer, DJ Scoob Doo , posted notice on Twitter that they were about to take off from Miami to the Big Apple. Scoob also put up photos of their private jet. On Friday night, Wayne again appeared in front of the cameras, via Ustream, using Young Money member Lil Twist’s account. Wayne, Scoob and Twist sat down for dinner at Weezy’s Miami mansion and went live around 8:45 p.m. ” Jay-Z had a concert at Madison Square Garden,” Wayne said to the viewers, recalling the show he attended the night after a courthouse fire delayed his sentencing . ” Jay-Z and Young Jeezy . I had an opportunity to go out there on Young Jeezy’s set and perform ‘I’m Goin In.’ It was surprise to the crowd because they didn’t know I was there. I was supposed to go in [to jail that day]. Nicki Minaj blessed the stage first on that ‘Bedrock.’ When I say blessed the stage, she blessed it. Looking immaculate. Then I came up there. “I just ran out there and performed,” he added. “After I performed, Drake came out there and performed his verse. They went extra bananas. Then Jeezy performed his verse. They went stupid. It was an amazing moment.” From there, Wayne went on to marvel at all the women responding to him on Ustream that said they wanted to have sex with him. The New Orleans superstar also gave a plethora of shout-outs to the viewers as well as to some of his famous friends. “Shout out my n—a Justin Bieber ,” he said, continuing his public conversation with the teen sensation. Wayne also revealed a new addition to his label of talented artists. “Shout out to my n—a Cory Gunz , about to be the newest member of the Young Money team.” A couple of years ago, Gunz answered the call from Wayne to lay a verse on “A Milli,” though Gunz’s rhymes never made it on the album. The two apparently ran into each other last week in Miami and talked about officially joining forces, but a formal deal has not yet been completed. Gunz tweeted over the weekend, “LOL. Young Money!!!!!!” Wayne, who has been tweeting frequently and posting other Ustreams over the weekend, is expected to be sentenced to a year in prison on gun possession charges. Kanye West Protege Mikkey Halstead Working On First Album

‘It’s really going to be done the way I want,’ he tells Mixtape Daily. By Steven Roberts Mikkey Halsted Photo: MTV News Fire Starter: Mikkey Halsted You would think that if Kanye West produced your demo with beats he hand-selected for you, you would be good to go. Now if that demo somehow found its way into the hands of Cash Money Records CEO Birdman, you’d definitely be topping the charts in no time. As a teenager, Mikkey Halsted was lucky enough to experience both of those scenarios, although things ended up not working out as planned. Hailing from Chicago, Halsted was introduced to Kanye by his sister, Miss Criss, another artist West had been working with in 2001. Criss raved to the producer about her brother’s lyrical skills but it wasn’t until ‘Ye overheard Halsted freestyling that he began to really pay attention. “Just going over to Kanye’s mama’s house, I used to be just kicking it, freestyling,” Halsted explained. “I really wasn’t taking hip-hop seriously at that point. I was into trying to make it to the NBA — I was a ballplayer. We got over there freestyling one time and he was like, ‘Damn, man, you’re really raw for real. Your sister wasn’t lying.’ He was like, ‘Man, take these beats, man, and see what you can do.’ ” Halsted came back the next day with three records finished, and the duo worked on a 15-song demo that made it to the executive offices of Cash Money Records. “This is before Kanye went to the Roc and all that … got to Cash Money, they heard it. They went crazy. They actually tried to get Kanye and me to sign.” Mikkey and his sister both signed and actually went on tour with the label, and although things did not ultimately work out with Cash Money, he built great relationships — Lil Wayne is still one of his good friends. Weezy shouted out Halsted in the October 2008 issue of XXL saying, “If anybody had me really get on my sh–, [it was] Mikkey.” Halsted also learned from the Cash Money work ethic. “I learned the independent game from them and I saw how they grinded. I took the Cash Money grind and applied it to my own situation and with my work ethic. I saw Wayne [work], and me and Wayne kind of came up together in a way,” he said. “All of those things and all of those different people kind of made me who I am today.” After a short stint signed to Jermaine Dupri’s So So Def imprint, Halsted found himself independent again — and relishing it. He hooked back up with Kanye’s onetime mentor and Grammy-winning producer, No ID, and the two have steadily been putting out mixtapes and releasing songs to the hip-hop blogosphere. They are currently working on an independent album called The Darkroom. “It’s really going to be my first album and it’s really going to be done the way I want — the way No ID and I wanted to do it if we didn’t have any label interference,” Halsted said. “But it’s just a good thing. I’ve been through so many different things in a short period of time, so thank God I started as a teenager so, you know, you feel like you matured now, you ready for everything that’s coming.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Fire That Delayed Lil Wayne Sentencing Ruled An Accident

Smoke was caused by an electrical miscue in the basement of the courthouse. By Jayson Rodriguez New York City Fire Marshalls enter the Manhattan Criminal Court building in Manhattan Tuesday Photo: Timothy A. Clary/ Getty Images The fire that caused Lil Wayne’s sentencing to be delayed twice this week has been deemed an accident, according to the New York Daily News. The smoke was caused by an electrical miscue in the basement of the courthouse, and as a result, the building was evacuated. The Manhattan Criminal Court building was later closed for the afternoon, which resulted in a number of hearings to be postponed, most notably Lil Wayne’s. Scaled-down proceedings took place Wednesday (March 3), but an official confirmed to MTV News in the morning that the Cash Money Records lyricist would not be sentenced until Monday . The courthouse was closed Wednesday as operations moved to a smaller building across the street. “For losing the biggest courthouse in the state, we’re doing pretty well,” a spokesman for the Office of Court Administration told the Daily News. “We expected it to be a bit messy, but we’re still up and running.” Lil Wayne will now have through the weekend until he faces Judge Charles H. Solomon. The rapper reached a plea deal with prosecutors in November, and as a result, he will serve a one-year prison term. He is expected to turn himself in immediately after formal sentencing. On Tuesday night, Wayne appeared at Madison Square Garden alongside Young Jeezy during Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3 Tour. As of press time, it’s unclear if the superstar MC will stay in New York or return to Miami, where he resides. His lawyer, Stacey Richman, suggested Florida would be better to spend his remaining free time. “Maybe he’s going to go home for the weekend,” Richman said. “I think I would — the weather’s nicer down there.” Related Videos Lil Wayne’s ‘Road To Rikers’ Related Photos Lil Wayne Heads To Rikers Island Related Artists Lil Wayne
