‘Resident Evil: Afterlife’ Stars On Their Weapons Of Choice

‘In this movie, I have a lot more guns,’ Milla Jovovich says. By Kara Warner Milla Jovovich Photo: MTV News While much has been made of the current pop-culture obsession with vampires, there has been an equally fervent fixation on zombies (e.g., “Zombieland,” “28 Days Later,” “30 Days of Night,” AMC’s upcoming “The Walking Dead”), and this week marks the release of the fourth “Resident Evil” film. In this latest installment, “Resident Evil: Afterlife,” the story picks up roughly six months after “Resident Evil: Extinction.” Alice (Milla Jovovich) is desperately searching for survivors — first near a small town in Alaska, where she finds Claire Redfield (Ali Larter), and then in desolate, undead-ridden Los Angeles. Despite being the fourth film in the franchise, “Afterlife” contains a couple of notable firsts: the appearance of Chris Redfield (Wentworth Miller) and an Alice vs. Albert Wesker fight sequence. Speaking of fighting, when we caught up with the film’s two leading ladies recently, we asked them to share their preferred method/weaponry for eliminating zombies. “I like to get in there,” Jovovich said. “In ‘Resident Evil 3,’ I had my cookeries. I like the hacking, chopping bit. It’s nice to hit some flesh and bone and [hear the] crack. It made me feel really strong and powerful,” she revealed. “In this movie, I have a lot more guns, that was fun too.” Jovovich went on to compare the shooting of machine guns to playing guitar. “I never realized shooting guns is a lot like playing guitar — you need calluses for it,” she said. “After a day of shooting machine guns, I got blisters on my fingers. It’s like, ‘Oh, I need to practice a bit more and get those calluses going,” she said. “But thank god I don’t have to shoot machine guns every day.” Co-star Ali Larter agreed with Jovovich’s preference for hacking things, but admitted she has a special place in her heart for fancy Italian firearms. “I get to use an Italian Beretta in this film that’s never been on camera before, so that’s fun,” Larter bragged. “I also like using my knife and getting at Wesker. That’s pretty cool.” Larter went on to say that she and her co-stars were pretty bruised and battered by the end of the shoot as a result of the intense action sequences. “We spent a lot of time with stunt coordinators, with the weapons experts, making sure that we were doing it right and we were doing it safe. When you have five actors lined up and you’re shooting blanks — it’s one thing if everyone is 50 feet away, but when you’re within 3 feet of someone, you can really get hurt,” Larter explained. “It’s making sure that with all of us you really take the time to be professional.” “You also want to look real,” she added. “I don’t want to look like a sissy with a Beretta. I want you to believe that I will take your ass out.” From the saucy Jessica Alba in “Little Fockers” to James Franco’s grueling journey in “127 Hours,” the MTV Movies team is delving into the hottest flicks of fall 2010. On Meet the Press, Host Sets Up GOP Senator to Debate on Iraq with Anti-War NBC Reporter

On Sunday’s Meet the Press , NBC host David Gregory wrapped up his interview with Sen. Lindsey Graham by setting up a debate with anti-war NBC reporter Richard Engel, who wasn’t shy this week in asserting on NBC’s Today that the Iraq war was unnecessary, that Saddam Hussein was growing more moderate and respectable by the day, and was gaining acceptance in Europe. After Gregory played a clip of that — complete with Engel calling Iraq a “giant distraction of resources” from Afghanistan, just like a congressional Democrat — Senator Graham insisted that the NBC reporter was “completely rewriting history” and that Saddam “was not becoming a good citizen, he was becoming a more dangerous dictator. The world is better with him dead.” Even as this stage of the Iraq war, as the surge seems to quite clearly brought peace and calm, never-say-it’s-a-win die-hards in the liberal media are the first line of attack on the Republican position: DAVID GREGORY:  Senator, I want to conclude by asking you a question about Iraq and Afghanistan.  The president, of course, ended Operation Iraqi Freedom with an Oval Office address, addressing the nation on that point on the end of the war.  Our own chief foreign correspondent, Richard Engel, who covered the war throughout and has covered the war in Afghanistan as well, offered some analysis during an appearance with Ann Curry on the “Today” show about the legacy of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.  I’d like you to listen and react to it. RICHARD ENGEL:  If there had been no invasion, Saddam would still be in power.  He was probably getting more moderate.  He was being welcomed into the–into–by, by a lot of European countries.  He was being welcomed into Eastern Europe in particular.  He as heading in a, in a direction of, of accommodation.  The, the sanctioned regime that was holding him in place was starting to fail.  So I think he would–it would be somewhat of a, a basket case, but it would still–it would be–Iran would be a lot more contained. So it would be a dictatorship that was trying to break out of its box, but Iran would not be as dangerous as it, as it is today. ANN CURRY:  And had the United States not invaded Iraq, would we be done in Afghanistan? RICHARD ENGEL:  Probably.  That was a giant distraction of resources, of intelligence assets.  That war would probably be over. GREGORY:  Senator, what do you say? SEN. LINDSEY GRAHAM:  Completely rewriting history.  Our planes were being shot at in the no-fly zones, Saddam Hussein was violating every U.N. resolution to account for his weapons program, he was openly defying the international community when it came to controlling Iraq.  He was not becoming a good citizen, he was becoming a more dangerous dictator.  The world is better with him dead.  If we can get a government together soon in Iraq and it becomes stable and secure, we’ll have a democracy between Iran and Syria.  Iran’s biggest nightmare is to have a neighbor on their border who practices democracy.  So the 4,400 young men and women who’ve died have done this country a great service by securing Iraq and making… GREGORY:  Well, nobody’s disputing whether they’ve done the country a great service.  But even our current… GRAHAM:  We’re safer. GREGORY:  …defense secretary, who’s a Republican says, “Iraq will always be clouded by how it began.” Three-quarters of the American people think it was not worth the cost. GRAHAM:  Well, I can tell you, we will be safer by how it ends.  History will judge us, not by what we did wrong at the beginning, but what we got right at the end.  If we can get the government stable in–and, and President Obama, it is now his job to finish out Iraq.  If it finishes out well and it becomes secure and stable, allied with us on the war on terror–this is the place al-Qaeda was beat by fellow Muslims.  I can’t underestimate how important that was.  Al-Qaeda went into Iraq to topple our efforts to bring about stability and representative government, and they were, they were beaten by Muslims with our help.  That is a huge win in the war on terror.  So Afghanistan is a — we’re getting things better, we got a long ways to go, but I am glad we did what we did in Iraq.  America will be safer and history will record this as a big event in the Mideast where a dictatorship was replaced by a democracy in the heart of the Arab world. PS: I am not related to Senator Graham.

‘BioShock Infinite’ Developer Avoided ‘Repeating’ Original Game

Ken Levine reveals the history behind his new city, Columbia. By Russ Frushtick “BioShock Infinite” Photo: Irrational Games Ken Levine is known as the man behind “BioShock” but in the three years since that game launched, no one had any idea what he and his team at Irrational Games were working on. That mystery has finally been revealed, and Levine sat down with MTV News to discuss his new project, “BioShock Infinite.” Rapture, the underwater city players explored in “BioShock,” has not yet been built when “BioShock Infinite” takes place. Set in the early 1900s, “Infinite” has players exploring a brand-new locale: Columbia, a massive, floating city in the sky, suspended by hot-air balloons and propellers. “Imagine what the moon landing was in 1969,” Levine explained. “This was the purpose of Columbia, was to show the success of the American experiment, of American ingenuity, of American endeavor, the American democratic principles. And to move around the world as a demonstration of what we could create.” But there was a darker reason for Columbia’s existence as well: It’s a weapon. Levine goes so far as to call it a “Death Star.” And once its true nature was revealed to the world, Columbia vanished into the clouds and wasn’t seen again for more than a decade. It’s around this time that your character discovers Columbia and unravels the mystery of what has been going on there. Unlike Rapture’s dark colors and muted tones (a side-effect of being built deep beneath the sea), Columbia is bright and sunny. The blue skies, white clouds and architectural opulence in “BioShock Infinite” provide a stark contrast to the original game. Levine said this shift was by design. “We’re not interested in repeating ourselves. I’m a real admirer of David Lynch and Stanley Kubrick. How do you take a world that doesn’t look traditionally scary, that’s bright and colorful … how do you make that weird and creepy and strange? We had worked in that darker palette, that underwater palette, that deep-space palette. These deep purples and reds and darkness. And we said, ‘Well, let’s do something very different.’ ” Columbia is most certainly different, but it was important to Levine that “BioShock Infinite” stay true to the tenets of the franchise. “To me, there’s two things that make a ‘BioShock’ game ‘BioShock.’ They take place in a world that is both fantastic and ridiculous. Something that you’ve never seen before and something that nobody else could create except Irrational, but it’s also strangely grounded and believable. The other thing that makes it a ‘BioShock’ game, it’s about having a huge toolset of power and a huge range of challenges, and you being able to drive how you solve those challenges. With ‘BioShock Infinite,’ we’re really just expanding upon that.” The toolset Levine spoke about isn’t just limited to the weapons and powers given to the player. The environment also plays a bit part in player choice. Levine demonstrated a section of the game where players can ride rails, called skylines, from one floating block to another. These rails aren’t just a means of getting from point A to point B; they allow players to decide how to approach a combat situation. Do you try to get as close as possible to your target, or do you stay far away and mobile? Levine is trying to make a game where both options would be viable. Our first glimpse at “BioShock Infinite” was relatively brief, but it was enough to whet an appetite that’s been starving for information since 2007. Unfortunately, our patience will have to hold out for a while longer, as the game is planned for release in 2012. For more on “BioShock Infinite,” head on over to Multiplayer.MTV.com .

Semi Precious Weapons Tweet-N-Greet With Fans Before Lady Gaga Tour

One lucky fan, who traveled all the way from Australia, got two free tickets for their SPW devotion. By Matt Elias Semi Precious Weapons’ Justin Tranter Photo: MTV News LOS ANGELES — Semi Precious Weapons are known for their unabashed stage presence, flamboyant wardrobe and, maybe most of all, undying love for their fans. So when Lady Gaga’s opening act hit Los Angeles for the Monster Ball Tour , the band invited MTV News along to witness firsthand a pre-show tweet-n-greet, with a very precious prize at the end. SPW frontman Justin Tranter explained how it all goes down: “Every single day, we announce where we’re going to have our Semi Precious Street Corner. So we show up somewhere every day to give away two tickets, free tickets, to the Monster Ball.” By the time the band tweeted their location from backstage and walked across the street from the Staples Center, 30 die-hard fans were already lined up. What followed was an energetic, impromptu trivia game to award tickets to the Weapons’ biggest fan. Once they arrived, Tranter took command of the crowd to narrow down three finalists. “What is the fourth song on our album?” Tranter asked. ” ‘Statues of Ourselves,’ ” finalist #1 answered. Tranter continued: “Finish the sentence: ‘Rock and roll never looked so … ‘ ” “Beautiful!” screamed finalist #2. “Last question: What is his name?” Tranter asked, while pointing at the band’s bassist. “Cole!” finalist #3 shouted. With the lightning round over, Tranter had one more declaration before he picked the lucky fan. “Now, listen, you can’t hate me if you don’t win tickets, because I love you all, I love you all — but one of you is going to get two tickets,” Tranter said. “OK, this last part gets really fancy. Are you ready?” He then broke into the playground-worthy selection method “eeny, meeny, miny, moe,” landing on a tearful super-fan who traveled all the way from Australia. How would you have done on SPW’s trivia test? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Semi Precious Weapons Lady Gaga

Israel blacklisted some weapons and materials to enter Gaza

The Israeli government announced the list of what goods it will allow to enter the Gaza Strip. A blacklist of items including weapons and materials that could have a military use will be limited or barred, but consumer goods are all allowed. The blacklist includes multi-purpose items that could be used to manufacture explosives and weapons, such as fireworks and ball bearings. Materials such as steel, fertilizers, cement and chemicals will be allowed in for Palestinian Authority-approved projects that are under the supervision and for the use of the UN or other international agencies. Hamas, the one who controls Gaza Strip, dismissed the concessions as of no use and said the blockade should be fully lifted. Its blockade of the Palestinian territory is needed to prevent the supply of weapons to Hamas, Israel says. Israel came under pressure to ease its 4-year blockade of Gaza after 9 activists from Turkey were killed in a an Israeli raid last 31st day of May, on a flotilla that was trying to carry aid to the Palestinian territory. Lindsay Lohan, Ankle Monitor Go Bar Hopping

Just because she has a SCRAM bracelet strapped to her ankle doesn’t mean Lindsay Lohan intends to scram from bars. Hey, clubbing isn’t a probation violation! In what appears to be the worst decision ever, the train wreck threw herself back into the thick of temptation last night, bar hopping through Hollywood until 2. Lindsay Lohan was not seen with an alcoholic beverage, and it appears the SCRAM did not go off … unless she found a clever way to defeat the ankle bracelet . She’s tampered with them in the past … because she’s had to wear an ankle monitor in the past, natch. Linds’ night of non-partying kicked off at Bar Marmont. Blondes totally have more fun … ankle monitors and all! Then she rolled over to Las Palmas, where she partied ’til the bar closed. It’s like she’s rubbing it in the face of celebrity gossip cameras dying to watch her eff up. Remember, the judge has barred Lohan from any alcohol intake between now and July 6. If she violates the judge’s orders, her $100,000 bail may be revoked ASAP. Is she flirting with disaster by hitting the party scene? Or proving she can still have a good time without booze? Or just faded on Ambien without anyone knowing? Who will win this epic battle?

Heidi Montag Packs Heat, Covets Transformers Role

Heidi Montag wants to star in Transformers 3. The events seen on this week’s Lost finale will come true before that happens, but her lobbying for the role resulted in an excuse to post these pics, so we’ll permit it. Speaking of permits, hopefully she and Spencer Pratt have the proper documentation for those guns. No, really, they are packing serious heat at the shooting range: EXHIBITS A & B : Of why our nation needs an assault weapons ban . In an effort to land the movie role vacated by Megan Fox, the 23-year-old Hills star posted a 30-second video clip of her shooting skills on her Facebook page. Heidi turns to the camera and says, “This is for you, Michael Bay,” before moving around a firing range hitting targets … from just a few feet away. Amazing. While you’d probably rather look at Megan Fox pictures than Heidi Montag pictures, the former hasn’t brought along the paparazzi to the firing range lately. That we know of, anyway. Anyway, click to enlarge these hilarious Speidi pics: [Photos: PacificCoastNewsOnline.com]
