The Expendables 2 once again took a machine gun to its box office competitors this weekend, taking in the most money for a second consecutive Friday and Saturday, this time by about $4 million over The Bourne Legacy . But it was a mostly quiet weekend in Hollywood, with few new films opening and Sylvester Stallone’s sequel winning the weekend with a haul of just $13.9 million. The major movie news instead centered around 2016: Obama’s America , a conservative documentary that cracked the top 10 overall, earning $6.2 million and enjoying an impressive per-theater average of over $5,700.
Let the slander ensue. 2016: Obama’s America didn’t come up short this weekend. The new conservative film that depicts Obama as defending his Father’s dreams of revenge debuted at Number 4 in the box offices this past Friday. It’s not clear where Obama’s America, distributed by Rocky Mountain Pictures, will end up for the weekend, although most box office observers believe it will end up in the $6 million range. On Friday, the documentary upped its theater count from 169 to 1,090, just as Republicans began heading for Tampa, Fla., where the Republican National Convention begins on Monday. Obama’s America did well in a number of large cities where it opened Friday, including Denver, Phoenix and San Diego. Smaller markets also turned in steller numbers, including Baton Rouge, La., Wichita, Ks., Grand Junction, Co., and Albany, NY. Ah, Hank Williams Jr. Guy really needs to join fellow musicians Ted Nugent and Dave Mustaine on a Anti-Obama Conspiracy Tour 2012. The sound bites would be incredible. At his concert Friday night at the Iowa State Fair – where Obama bought beers earlier in the week – Williams absolutely laid into the President on stage. What did he say, exactly? Following Williams’ song “We Don’t Apologize For America” a chant of “U-S-A, U-S-A, U-S-A” broke out amongst the crowd, according to the Des Moines Register . Hank told the crowd he was their mouthpiece, and said, “We’ve got a Muslim president who hates farming, hates the military, hates the US and we hate him!” The cheers that followed were loud and enthusiastic. A hard-line Republican, Williams was fired by ESPN last fall after dropped after he made similarly offensive comments about President Obama last year. Amazingly, Hank’s belief that Barack is Muslim (he’s Christian) is only the second most absurd thing we’ve heard a musician say about him this week. The Expendables 2 blasted its way to the top of the box office this weekend, but Robert Pattinson also had a few thousand reasons to smile. While the Sylvester Stallone-penned action flick earned nearly $30 million and easily out-garnered The Bourne Legacy for the number-one ranking, Pattinson’s Cosmopolis – his first movie since news of the Kristen Stewart affair broke – grossed $72,000 at just three theaters. That gave Cosmopolis the weekend’s biggest per-screen average. So take that, D.B. Sweeney ! Sparkle – which featured Whitney Houston in her final big screen performance – landed in fifth place. But it sported the Top 10’s best per-theater average after The Expendables 2 . Hope Springs gained momentum after its mid-week bow, while Total Recall lands soft in its second frame. 1. The Bourne Legacy Gross: $40,265,491 Screens: 3,745 (PSA: $10,752) Week: 1 The latest Bourne easily snatched the top spot in the overall box office in its debut, ending the long reign of The Dark Knight Rises . But compared to its most immediate predecessor, the latest installment came in a bit thinner. The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) landed at just per $69.28 million in its opening weekend in 3,660 theaters, averaging $18,929. The pic went on to gross over $227.47 million in the domestic box office. Legacy also opened in 13 small territories, grossing $7.8 million, bringing its worldwide total to $48.1 million. 2. The Campaign Gross: $27.44 million Screens: 3,205 (PSA: $8,562) Week : 1 The comedy touched the funny bone for audiences, grabbing the second spot in the box office. It is the biggest weekend opener for Will Ferrell since 2010 comedy The Other Guys , which came in at over $35.5 million in 3,651 theaters. 3. The Dark Knight Rises Gross: $19.54 million (Cume: $390,149,000) Screens: 3,690 (PSA: $5,295) Week: 4 (Change: – 45%) The Christopher Nolan-directed Batman finale held the top spot for three weeks in the domestic box office, but has likely crested Stateside. Its worldwide gross is now over $36.55 million. 6. Total Recall Gross: $8.1 million (Cume: $44.188 million) Screens: 3,601 (PSA: $2,249) Week: 2 (Change: – 68%) The Total Recall reboot stayed in the same number of theaters and in its second round, the title appears to be sputtering with a 68% decline in gross compared to its tepid opening weekend of $26 million. Overseas, the pic has grossed an additional $27.5 million.
