Official results are still forthcoming, but early indications show that President Omar Hassan al-Bashir is set to win a landslide victory. Opposition parties are threatening to boycott the results, as a statement from the U.S. White House described the election as plagued by “serious irregularities”. Sudan remains a country with serious problems from conflict in Darfur and ongoing humanitarian crises in refugee camps and several drought-stricken regions. The election is also seen as prelude to another upcoming vote: a referendum of independence for Southern Sudan in 2011 that could create a new African nation. Obama suggests value-added tax may be an option

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama suggested Wednesday that a new value-added tax on Americans is still on the table, seeming to show more openness to the idea than his aides have expressed in recent days. Before deciding what revenue options are best for dealing with the deficit and the economy, Obama said in an interview with CNBC, “I want to get a better picture of what our options are.” “I think I directly answered this the other day by saying that it wasn't something that the president had under consideration,” White House press secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters shortly before Obama spoke with CNBC. When asked if he could see a potential VAT in this nation, the president said: “I know that there's been a lot of talk around town lately about the value-added tax. Kal Penn Robbed, Secret Service Unamused

Kal Penn was robbed at gunpoint yesterday, and boy did that robber mess with the wrong semi-famous actor turned Obama administration member. The United States Secret Service is now on the case. It turns out that the perpetrator didn’t just take Penn’s wallet , he also made off with Kal’s two cell phones, one belonging to the U.S. government. Penn is the White House’s Associate Director in the office of Public Engagement. To quote Kristin Cavallari , you f*%ked with the WRONG guy, dude! The 32-year-old former member of the House cast left the hit Fox drama to join the administration of the President-elect back in late 2008. The crook took Kal’s government-issued cell, the Secret Service is now joining with the D.C. Metro Police Department to hunt for the bad guy. Sources tell us Penn contacted White House communications, who cut off the service on the stolen phone ASAP and issued him a new cell. Reports say “no information was compromised because no official numbers were in the phone.” Harold & Kumar quotes , however? Unclear.

‘Harold & Kumar’ actor’s wallet and cell phone were taken early Tuesday morning in Washington, D.C. By Greg M. Schwartz Kal Penn Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images Kal Penn was robbed at gunpoint in Washington, D.C., at 1:20 a.m. Tuesday (April 20), according to The Washington Post. Penn, best known for his roles in the “Harold & Kumar” films and TV’s “House,” reported that the first suspect approached him with a gun and ordered him to get down on the ground before taking his wallet and cell phone. A second suspect then joined him. Jennifer Goodwin, Penn’s agent, confirmed to The Associated Press. that the actor was robbed early Tuesday morning. Penn recently resigned from an associate-director job in the White House Office of Public Engagement to return to his acting career. Before stepping down, he had been tasked with working with Asian-American and Pacific Islander communities, as well as arts groups. Penn took the job in April 2009 but announced earlier this month that he was leaving his post to participate in a third “Harold & Kumar” flick. “A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas” will hit theaters in November. Penn’s “Harold & Kumar” co-star John Cho recently confirmed to Collider.com that the “Christmas” script is in. He said the story is set sometime after the events of the second movie and that there’s a plan to bring Neil Patrick Harris back, despite the fact ( spoiler alert! ) that he was killed in “Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay.”

A Woman Stranded in U.K. Needs Medication

A woman stranded in the UK because of the ash cloud asks urgent help from the U.S. government to act so that the stranded Americans can return home. Danelle McCarthy has been stuck in London since Thursday when she was due to fly home to New York afetr attending a sales conference. But her situation is complicated because she needs to take a synthetic thyroid hormone, Synthroid, daily as a result of having a her thyroid removed because of cancer. There are no available drugs from the pharmacists or chemists in the UK. She told CNN that “They have natural form of it which doesn’t absorb in my body the way that it should. I take a very high dose – 250 mcg, and it;s been a nightmare trying to get my medecine.” She also mentioned that the response of the U.S. authorities had been a disaster. She tried to contact the U.S. and all that she receives are links to the web that in anyways, are inpossible to get to. She also tried to write a letter to the White House with regards to her concern and she said the the U.S. should help U.K. lead the stranded people to get back in America. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said Monday that Royal Navy vessels had been deployed to bring home stranded travelers.
