TRAILER: Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master — Is Scientology on Blast?

A war veteran (Joaquin Phoenix) with a “nervous condition” finds himself entrenched in a cult — if not a religious cult, at least a cult of personality — built around a charismatic leader (Philip Seymour Hoffman) in Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master . At long last, after a series of enigmatic teases, the first full trailer has hit the web offering more than just abstract , beguiling peeks at the rumored Scientology drama. So how much L. Ron Hubbard is there in Hoffman’s Master? The trailer alights on Phoenix’s Freddie Sutton as he wanders into the world of writer, doctor, nuclear physicist, and theoretical philosopher Lancaster Dodd, whose Hubbard-esque writings are glimpsed. (The way Dodd pens the dedication of his novel — “As a gift to Homo Sapiens” — is a bit of scripting brilliance that hints at Dodd’s grandiose, bombastic personality in just a single glance.) Things seem innocent enough as Dodd and his wife (Amy Adams) welcome his new charge into the fold. “We’ll urge you toward existence within a group, a society of family,” Dodd says. Like Scientology, this group promises self-improvement through community, though suspense kicks in as an accuser drops the c-word — “cult” — sending Dodd’s group onto a more sinister path. “The only way to defend ourselves is to attack,” Adams spits. It all certainly seems to be calling out Scientology and its founder, moreso the unflattering public image of its followers in the eyes of the outside world — organized faith-peddlers masking dubious claims behind their eccentric figurehead, desperate to protect themselves against scrutiny or worse. It might not seem so Scientology-esque if the tales of ex-members exiting the group weren’t so dramatic , or if Katie Holmes hadn’t reportedly been followed by a gang of Church members following her separation from Tom Cruise, the kind of crazy story that highlights the organization’s more bizarre characteristics. But does The Master really seem to be about Scientology at its core? Not much is apparent so far. The parallels are there – the author-turned-spiritual leader, the cult-like tendencies, the insular power dynamic within and without, not to mention the suggestion that it’s all a sham — and maybe Anderson’s taking an overt jab at the Church by using the bones of Scientology’s story to set up his own. But Anderson’s films explore larger human themes within narrow, specific worlds; it feels reductive to call The Master a Scientology movie just yet, though how much specific criticism can be drawn from the story remains to be seen. So forget the Scientology ties for a moment. This trailer looks fantastic, and though it hints at much more of the plot than we’ve seen previously, it’s still tantalizingly mysterious. Most surprising is Amy Adams, who commands attention as Dodd’s wife with glimpses of a mousy-to-Lady Macbethian arc throughout the trailer. Hailey Baldwin More Relevant Than Stephen Baldwin in her 16 Year Old Bikini of the Day

For the most part celebrity kids are fucking annoying…except maybe Sage Stallone and Jet Travolta…you know cuz they are dead. What too soon? They are all spoiled and damaged becasue their parents are damaged but they manage to land gigs because they are products of nepotism and end up making more money than you, and they don’t even need to make unless they are Hailey Baldwin and their dad is Stephen Baldwin…possibly still a millionaire….but pretty hurting across the board… Pulled this from his wikipedia – you know since I don’t stay on top of Baldwin News…. Baldwin has a tattoo on his left shoulder of the initials “HM” for Hannah Montana. He got the tattoo after making a pact with Miley Cyrus that he would be allowed to cameo on the show if he had the initials tattooed on him. He revealed the tattoo to Cyrus at a book signing in Nashville, on November 10, 2008. He never appeared on the show. He has since said that he regrets getting the tattoo. Stephen and his wife, Kennya, defaulted on paying $824,488.36 on their mortgage. Baldwin’s home in Upper Grandview, (Rockland County) New York was being auctioned at the County Court House steps on June 12, 2009 after Bankers Trust Co. foreclosed on the home. Gannett News also reported that: “Additionally, county filings show the Baldwins owe National City Bank money for a separate mortgage and may owe tens of thousands in unpaid state and federal taxes on the property.” He filed for a Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition in New York, on July 21, 2009, according to a court document that says he is millions in debt. He claimed he owes more than $2.3 million and owns a New York property valued at only $1.1 million. His wife, Kennya Baldwin, also is named in the document. In December 2010, Baldwin filed a $3.8 million lawsuit against actor Kevin Costner over oil-separating technology that was used to help solve the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. In June 2012, a jury found in favor of Costner and awarded Baldwin no damages. Forcing poor Hailey to go out there at 16…all skinny and in a bikini…. to make a name for herself because her dad tried and didn’t pull it off…but he did enough to land a hot wife…cuz girls are all opportunists…luckily she is half brazilian and that’s really what matters here…. Shook Ones: George Zimmerman Wants A New Judge In Fear That He Won’t Receive A Fair Trial

George Zimmerman’s Defense Team Requests A New Trial Judge Former self-appointed neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman is now requesting a new judge be appointed to handle his murder trial. George Zimmerman, accused of murdering 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, filed a motion on Friday to disqualify the judge that will preside over his case, citing his fear that he will not be given a fair trial. Zimmerman, via his attorney, Mark O’Mara, filed the 17-page document with the Seminole County Circuit Court. The motion is a response to Judge Kenneth Lester’s July 5 order that set $1 million bail for Zimmerman and claimed that Zimmerman had “flaunted the system” and practiced “deception upon the court.” It was the second time Lester granted Zimmerman bail. Lester revoked a previous $150,000 bail in April after prosecutors presented evidence that Zimmerman and his wife misled the court about how much money they had available by speaking in code on phone calls. Prosecutors added that Zimmerman initially lied about the existence of a second passport. O’Mara recently tried to appeal to the judge that Zimmerman was confused and fearful back in March when the alleged deception occurred. In a second bond hearing in June, O’Mara reiterated that Zimmerman had voluntarily turned himself in to the court and now was completely open regarding his financial ability. Lester, however, in that July 5 bail order, remained skeptical of Zimmerman’s motives and expressed irritation at being lied to. He accused Zimmerman of manipulating the court and even suggested that if Zimmerman had the opportunity he would have fled prosecution. In Friday’s motion, O’Mara wrote that Lester’s order was indicative of a bias against Zimmerman, saying that the judge’s statements were “disingenuous, self-serving manipulations.” First you want out of jail, now you want a new judge. This dude sure has a lot of “requests” for a murderer who’s out on bail. What’s next? Smh. Source

Jesus Take The Wheel: Man Arrested Of Enslaving His Wife In Chains And Beating The Crap Out Of Her For 10 Years

Man Arrested Of Enslaving His Wife In Chains For 10 Years This story is as crazy as the dude in the photo looks!! A West Virginia man was arrested Thursday for allegedly making his wife his slave, abusing her and holding her hostage for almost a decade. Authorities in Jackson County, W.Va., charged Peter Lizon of Leroy, W.Va., with malicious wounding after a woman staying at a domestic-violence shelter filed a criminal complaint, alleging a woman she met was brutally beaten by her husband. In an interview with investigators, the woman said she met Lizon’s wife, Stephanie, 43, while staying at the Family Crisis Intervention Center in Parkersburg, W.Va., and described her as “gaunt and filthy.” According to the criminal complaint, Stephanie told the woman that she recently escaped from her husband, who had kept her chained up with metal padlocks for about 10 years, which tore into the skin on her hands and ankles, leaving noticeable scar tissue. Her feet were also “mutilated and swollen” after her husband allegedly smashed her foot with a scoop attachment from a farm tractor. Lizon reportedly called his wife his “slave”, and whenever he entered the room, he made her kneel down before him. The woman also alleged that Stephanie said her husband caused her to have a miscarriage after her husband hit her in the stomach. She said she buried the corpse of a fully developed infant on their farm. She also said she gave birth to another baby while bound by chains, but neither she nor her now-one-year-old child had received any medical attention. During the investigation, police took 45 photos of Stephanie, showing injuries ranging from severe burns to her breasts and back to broken fingers and bruises all over her body. “It’s amazing what one human being can do to another,” Boggs said, “and that should not ever happen or be allowed to happen. And hopefully this will stop and curtail that, at least in this instance.” Lizon’s attorney, Shawn Bayliss, told WSAZ the allegations against Lizon are false, saying the woman who told police everything has a “feeble mind.” Lizon is being held in the South Central Regional Jail in lieu of $300,000 bail. Chief Boggs told msnbc.com malicious wounding is likely to net Lizon between two to 10 years in prison. According to the criminal complaint, Stephanie escaped from Lizon on June 18 while he was returning farm equipment to a rental store in Parkersburg. He left her and their child in the family’s vehicle. While Lizon was inside, she walked away, leaving her child in the car, and hid in a Zumba dance facility. She then found a ride to the shelter and checked in under the name “Serena Sokol.” Staff at the shelter later determined her true identity. She was treated for her injuries in an emergency room on June 20. Wow. No words for this one. Source

End Of Times: Man Posts ‘Vote Satan’ Sign In His Yard; Reports As Theft When It’s Stolen

What the hell? Man Claims Hate Crime When ‘Vote Satan’ Sign Is Stolen From His Yard It seems wildfires aren’t the only craziness going on in Colorado these days… A Colorado man is claiming that the theft of a “Vote Satan” sign from his property amounts to a hate crime. Luigi Bellavite, who is a member of the Church of Satan, reportedly had the sign hanging outside his Mountain View home next to an American flag. In an interview with local station KMGH-TV, Bellavite said he and his wife chose to display the sign “because it symbolizes freedom from dogmas.” Bellavite said that when the sign was stolen, police classified the case as a theft, but Bellavite believes it constitutes a hate crime, according to the station. “If it was the Star of David, absolutely it would be a hate crime,” he said. “There are such double standards that some religions and some ideas are protected and others are not.” Source

Nora Ephron Remembered By Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman

‘At a dinner table and on a film set she lifted us all with wisdom and wit,’ Hanks says of late filmmaker. By Jocelyn Vena Nora Ephron Photo: Nora Ephron ‘s impact on the world of film — particularly romantic comedies, thanks to her memorable scripts for big-screen classics “When Harry Met Sally …” and “Sleepless in Seattle” — was felt in the wake of the news that the screenwriter, journalist and director passed away on Tuesday at the age of 71 from pneumonia. Tom Hanks and his wife, Rita Wilson, who both appeared in “Sleepless in Seattle” (Hanks also later appeared in Ephron’s “You’ve Got Mail”), recalled the times they spent with her when the cameras weren’t rolling. “Nora Ephron was a journalist/artist who knew what was important to know; how things really worked, what was worthwhile, who was fascinating and why,” Hanks and Wilson said in a statement to E! News . “At a dinner table and on a film set she lifted us all with wisdom and wit, mixed with love for us and love for life. Rita and I are so very sad to lose our friend who brought so much joy to all who were lucky enough to know her.” Comedian and 2012 Academy Awards host Billy Crystal recalled the joy of appearing in “When Harry Met Sally …” in his remembrance of the multi-hyphenate talent. “I am very sad to learn of Nora’s passing,” he said in a statement. “She was a brilliant writer and humorist. Being her Harry to Meg’s Sally will always have a special place in my heart. I was very lucky to get to say her words.” Carrie Fisher, who appeared alongside Crystal in the iconic film, said in a statement to the Boston Globe , “In a world where we’re told that you can’t have it all, Nora consistently proved that adage wrong. A writer, director, wife, mother, chef, wit — there didn’t seem to be anything she couldn’t do. And not just do it, but excel at it, revolutionize it, set the bar for every other screenwriter, novelist, director. She was inspiring, intimidating and insightful. She was so, so alive. It makes no sense to me that she isn’t anymore. My heart goes out to her family and the many others who treasured her.” The outpouring of love for Ephron hardly ended there. Academy Award-winning actress Meryl Streep , who starred in two Ephron classics, “Heartburn” and 2009’s “Julie & Julia,” noted that her interests and intellect touched on all subject matters. “Nora just looked at every situation and cocked her head and thought, ‘Hmmmm, how can I make this more fun?’ ” Streep said. “You could call on her for anything: doctors, restaurants, recipes, speeches or just a few jokes, and we all did it, constantly. She was an expert in all the departments of living well.” Nicole Kidman, who starred in Ephron’s quirky big-screen take on the classic 1960s sitcom “Bewitched,” noted that it was a “joy to be around” the writer. “She was so smart, warm and funny. I am so grateful that she was my friend and we had the opportunity to work together. My thoughts and love are with her family at this time. I will never forget the dinners, games and laughter we all shared,” Kidman said. Tyler Perry’s ‘Alex Cross’ Trailer: Five Key Scenes

Tyler Perry and Matthew Fox feel the pain in the first trailer for the James Patterson adaptation. By Josh Wigler Tyler Perry in “Alex Cross” Photo: Don’t cross Alex Cross. Do cross the “Alex Cross” trailer. Tyler Perry makes his debut as James Patterson’s iconic detective and forensic psychologist in the first official trailer for “Alex Cross,” which premiered exclusively on Amazon Tuesday (June 26). Previously played by Morgan Freeman in “Kiss the Girls” and “Along Came a Spider,” Cross gets a younger makeover in the Perry-starring flick, as well as an impossibly ripped homicidal-maniac nemesis in the form of “Lost” veteran Matthew Fox. The trailer is all kinds of bonkers, with Fox shouting out sadistic one-liners and threatening women like it’s his job (in this case, it actually is) and Perry doing everything he can to hold it together while going up against one of the most ruthless psychopaths this side of Madea. Keep reading for five key scenes from the trailer! Tyler Perry’s Alex Cross If there’s one word to describe Perry’s take on the sharp-minded detective, it’s “smooth.” The trailer introduces us to a cool and composed Alex sipping drinks with his wife; she needs some convincing to leave Detroit and join Cross on his next assignment. His proposed method of getting her to come with him? “The National Guard and a drink.” You had me at “the”! He Had to Go Back Fox wholeheartedly embraces his inner Heath-Joker in the “Alex Cross” trailer, playing Michael “The Butcher” Sullivan, a killer who is “fascinated by pain.” Cross determines that Sullivan is “ex-military, special forces, judging by his tactics.” He’s also an Ultimate Fighting Champion, if you can believe it, and has a thing for Doctor Cross’ very pretty wife. It’s an unusual new shade for the actor most commonly associated with good guys Jack Shephard and Charlie Salinger, but it’ll be a fascinating transformation — or train wreck — to behold. Feel the Burns Just don’t get too distracted by Fox’s villainy. Also starring in “Alex Cross” is “Saving Private Ryan” and “Entourage” actor Edward Burns as Cross’ partner, Tommy Kane. It’s weird seeing Burns in a third-tier role at best; as a writer and director by trade, he tends to be somewhat choosy with his acting roles. (Ignore that “27 Dresses” credit.) So I’m calling it now: Burns is the real bad guy pulling Fox’s strings. Then again, I incorrectly called Jeremy Renner as the secret “Mission: Impossible” villain and Jared Harris as a red herring for the real Moriarty in the last “Sherlock Holmes” movie, so take my predictions with a half-cup serving of salt. Matthew Fox and the Chocolate Factory Watch at around the two-minute mark as Fox gets his high-tech Augustus Gloop on. If you need further reasons to see “Alex Cross” when it hits theaters this October, I don’t know what to tell you. To Hell and Back Again “He won’t stop. I’ve seen his face. I’ve heard his voice,” Perry’s Cross warns his wife of Fox’s killer. “I will meet his soul at the gates of Hell before I let him take a person that I love!” If there’s a better alternate ending to “Lost” or the “Madea” films than Tyler Perry and Matthew Fox battling to the death for Satan’s amusement, I haven’t heard of it. The trailer’s action-packed finale is, in a word, surreal, every bit as oddly enjoyable as the promise of Perry versus Fox sounds on paper. This demonic battle of the ages cannot come soon enough.
